Redmond Barry's dad was a major general in the battle of Waterloo, 1812. His ancestors were in William the Conquerors army in 1066 that invaded England and later Ireland and eventually Wales. In Normandy, France there's a little village called Barry. He was born in Ireland from invader stock. And Normandy was called that because Norseman invaded and took over the territory!
Always heard of Ned Kelly but never really knew the story. This is the first documentary I picked and I say thank you for everyone who had a hand in it. I certainly don’t need to watch a second one.
As an English guy I have only one thing to say, Good on ya Ned. The English treatment of the Irish was terrible and the disregard of the common people by the elite still carries on today. A man with his heart in the right place.

Billy the Kid was another young Irish immigrant (McCarthy) in a foreign land where poverty and the authorities of the time turned him into an outlaw. He had no other choice but to rebel.
Same here, and the same thing goes for Jesse James, Rob Roy MacGregor, Vlad The Impaler, Tsar Peter The Great, Hannibal of Carthage, Ulysses Of Ithaca, and Alexander The Great.
Ned Kelly was a 2nd cousin to my grandmother Eliza Kelly. Eliza married a Tom Lawlor from Thurles Co Tipperary Ireland where they settled and spent their whole life in the very 1st house they bought.

Im of Gael origin born in England. I've admired Ned Kelly since my mum bought me a book about "outlaws" as a boy in 1968. My grandson is named Ned in honour of this great Gael.
A transplanted Floridian, I moved to SW Virginia in 1999. Ned Kelly and all characters in this story would be in their element in this beautiful area of the Appalachians. Great story, narration and music. Thank you.
Dear John, That's great. I'm Australian/English raised in Australia & I knew of Ned but I hadn't read the story as yet. Very good watch. Cheers mate 😊 🇦🇺
People just don't appreciate how close an Irish republic, North-East Victoria, came to being formed here by Ned Kelly and his other supportive subsistence farmers in this region who reacted the way they did because of the injustices and callous greed of the arrogant large land holders who had the police force in their pockets. They very nearly became the founding fathers of a new country.
I think your'e drawing a long bow there mate. Even if it had somehow been 'declared' as an Irish republic by that mob, it would have been crushed by the large landowners, police and army troops instantly, like they did at Eureka. Also not everyone in that area was Irish or of Irish decent, so these folks probably wouldn't have shown much support.
Wish he was here now to sort this mess out. On a more serious note, the authorities harassed his mother. That was the catalyst. His rebellion was devotion to family.
I remember, here in Victoria, years back, at the state library, there was some exhibition to do with Ned Kelly and they had these little souvenir "cute" type dolls of Kelly for sale. I remember, at the time, thinking it was kind of twisted that a government can execute you and then later your image can be recreated as a kind of toy and various parts of the government can then sell these at a profit (the library is run by the state of Victoria). I don't know, it kind of struck me as wrong. I imagine he still has relatives out there and if he was so terrible you had to imprison and kill him, making various commercial ventures from his story and likeness seems a bit wrong - well, to me anyway!
He has no relatives who knew him, and if someone can't be used like this after so much time has passed, history would be impossible. Seriously, do you really think his likeness can't be sold by the state, or anyone else? Whether the government does or doesn't execute you has nothing to do with it. He's long DEAD, he is a historic figure of some renown, and if people didn't want these "toys" no one would buy them. You really need to grow up and learn some facts about how history works, and how such things promote learning and growing. Really, if you don't like it, don't buy one, but shut up and let the adults have their own conversation about it.

RIP Ned Kelly & mates
I like this story as it seems to be non-biased and fairly honest. Well as honest as history can be! Although Ned Kelly was a bad man he was also a man who tried to do right and yet was pushed in some way or other till he broke and sought the easier option that was unfortunately on the illegal side of life. I do understand why the subsequent future posterity, family members, of the killed police officers despise the Kely gang for what they did I can only hope that they are able to understand how difficult life was on the almost virgin land and how difficult life was for those that tried to tame it.
SILLY UNINFORMED COMMENT. Tried to do right, did he? He was found a good job by a police sergeant, who gave him the money to go home and to get to the job. Kelly rejected that job and never returned the money. Tell us all, how come 80% of the settlers who took up the land offered by the Victorian government made a go of it. Hardly doing it hard, were they, if that many succeeded? You are talking rubbish.

When all the prime ministers and politicians are forgotten, the name and story of Ned Kelly will live on and on in hearts and memories of common men and women.
I'am from Benalla Kelly Country. My great great grand mother knew Harry Power he would call in to the family family farm at Myrrhee, from time to time A friend of mine who lives on her family farm at Lurg spoke of her Grand Father who had said that he had met Ned and some of his brother, they would visit a number of local farms buying supplies for their mother, that she would use in her business, the road that the Kelly's lived on was in their day the main road from Melbourne to Sydney. I did some work on a house located at what use to be called Winton Swamp. I think most of the stories regarding the Kelly's are most likely reasonably accurate. The story also extended into other familys in the district who were also part of the Kelly story.
Ned Kelly's story reminds me of the Molly Maguires and some other American outlaws. The real stories are much more nuanced than the Cliff's Note's versions we grow up with.
Redmond Barry is my great great Grandfather, he defended the Eureka Stockade leader Laylor when he was a lawyer, Barrister and built the Victorian State library. The verdict was reached by the jury and Redmond Barry pronounced the sentence and I believe that he died about the same time as Ned.
