The True Story of William Wallace | Braveheart

William Wallace is celebrated as one of Scotland's greatest national heroes, revered as the leader of the Scottish rebel forces during the formative years of the prolonged struggle to liberate Scotland from English dominion at the close of the 13th century. His legacy is one of unwavering patriotism and steadfast dedication to the cause of Scottish independence, embodying the spirit of a nation yearning for freedom. He is more highly regarded than scottish monarchs with his name being known worldwide.
Much of what is popularly known about Wallace can be traced back to a late-15th-century romance titled The Wallace, attributed to Henry the Minstrel, commonly known as Blind Harry. This epic poem is fiercely anti-English in its language and tone, depicting Wallace as a heroic figure fighting against overwhelming odds. While many of the tales recounted in this work lack documentary evidence, they nonetheless capture the imagination and enduring spirit of the Scottish people. Wallace is portrayed as a champion of the common man, striving for liberty against oppression, and in stark contrast to the opportunistic Scottish nobility of his time, who are depicted as collaborators with the English for personal gain. He was a man from humble origins who rose to become the the guardian of Scotland and an inspiring general and leader of men. As the Scots believed in him, he was a man of incredible character, unwavering in his beliefs.
Unlike the conniving Scottish nobles who colluded with the English in exchange for financial rewards, Wallace sought neither personal fame nor material gain. Wallace accrued neither wealth nor land, and his sacrifices were made solely for the freedom and betterment of his homeland.
This profound dedication to his cause has cemented Wallace's legacy as a symbol of national pride and resistance. His story transcends time, being immortalised in the film braveheart highlighting some of his achievements and portraying him as a beacon of hope for the scottish people. Although captured by his adversary Edward Longshanks the King of England otherwise known as the hammer of the scotts, William displaced a will of iron and due to his defiance and was killed in one of the worst ways possible. This only heightened his legacy as and went on to inspire his fellow scots to gain their independence from tyrannical English rule. This is the story the guardian of Scotland William Wallace.

1. de Moray was the leader of the Scots army at Stirling Bridge. He was the senior Man, the experienced soldier. Wallace was nothing more than a 'scrapper'. 2. This is not Wallace's sword. It's far too large and unwieldy. This sword is a 15th century piece created by King James IV. It is made up of 3 different swords. It is rumoured that Wallace's actual sword was smelted with another 2 swords in order to create this piece. This is a ceremonial sword, or at very best, a sword used for duelling. 3. Wallace most certainly was not 6'6" or taller. The average height at the time was 5'5". What was considered tall then, would then not be considered tall today. Wallace may have been tall by comparison to others. Historians believe Wallace was perhaps 5'8" - 5'10", certainly not the giant he's described as in chronicles written 150-200 years after his death. 4. Wallace showed his lack of military understanding at Falkirk. Once word had reached Longshanks(who was in Linlithgow), that Wallace was only 7 miles away (at modern day Shield Hill), Wallace would also have been aware that Longshanks was once more on the march. Wallace had Callander Wood to his rear, he should've used that to his advantage and retreated towards Stirling. At very worst, Longshanks would've caught up prior to him reaching Stirling, but he could then have utilised the guerilla tactics, ambushing Longshanks army, rendering his cavalry and archers useless. Had he managed to reach Stirling, then he meets Longshanks on perhaps the same ground de Moray defeated the English a year earlier. As it was, Wallace showed a complete lack of understanding, and was humiliated as a result. He then ran away to France. Wallace wasn't a freedom fighter. He was no different to any other Noble. He would've gained had Scotland been 'freed' in his lifetime, make no mistake about it. He was in it for himself. He was being heavily taxed, which he obviously didn't enjoy, so he wanted 'home rule' so his taxes would be reduced. The image we have today of Wallace is an overly romanticised picture painted by the Georgians, and the Victorians. Wallace was an itch on Longshanks rear end which Longshanks eventually decided to get rid of. Many people were executed the same way Wallace had been. It was as common in Medieval times as Crucifixion had been centuries earlier. As Scots, we have to start learning real history, not this romanticised nonsense we've been getting taught for the last 150-200 years.

Yep William Wallace had acromegaly like Andre the Giant people would have followed him back then especially they would have thought he was descended from the Giants even maybe descended from the old gods and the superstitious Highlanders would have followed him I'm sure even by this point some of them was still packing in their hearts deep down they didn't let me know they didn't tell people but I'm sure behind closed doors some of them still practice the old ways I'm part of that was about you know the Ancient Giants an old guy because I thought William Wallace was descended from these Ancient Giants and he had Giants flood back then was almost like was descended from the Pagan old gods or something

So they cut his body into quarter's not his head; as it was tar dipped and piked? I think I misunderstood what you said. Thank you for this great study in the man the myth the legend, William Wallace! I really appreciate your work on this digging though and poring over the histories and presenting all the historic art about his life and death a true hero...make's me proud to have Scottish blood in my vein's as tyranny has recently tried to completely ruin the US or are just trying to plunge us into another civil war simply to cull the herd! Sickening what is happening with all of these idiot's supporting terrorist's who would throw them off the tallest. building if they we're there as sharia law is sickening and brutal and is as stated by the koran itself is straight from the great deceiver and they wish to enslave us all and are as brutal as the English were to well everyone it seem's, as this bastard line sit's the throne and the man who should've been there is a sweet old guy in Australia who just thought it was lovely to know and was on a documentary about 10ish year's ago...anyway's great work and thanks again. Fight, fight, fight or lose our freedom to a bunch of crooks who make a living robbing, lying, coercing, stealing and killing without justice reaching them or any of us down in the middle who they seem to want to eliminate and just have rich and slave...brilliant work!

The way Wallace was executed was *(imo)* what really caused the English to lose that war: they made him a martyr, and nothing is more powerful an inspiration to fight than that; the gruesome post-execution treatment of Wallace’s remains only worsened that mistake, leading to England’s defeat and Scotland’s indipendence.
