How far ahead of its time this movie was. Everything about is perfect. By far, my favorite Jim Carrey movie. Keep in mind in those days he had recently been seen in "In Living Color" and "Ace Ventura" so seeing him in dramatic roles like this was not the norm.

I wouldn’t say it was ahead of it’s time, I mean I know it came out before reality tv was a thing but this movie was a MEGA HIT and movies that are ahead of their time aren’t usually hits at the box office when they first come out… For example, Tron (1982) was a movie that was WAY ahead of it’s time and it didn’t do very well at the box office
With all the data collecting that all your devices do on your shopping habits, social media habits, etc along with their algorithms and ai analyzing data they don't need a camera in your head. They probably know you better than you know yourself. There was a story about how Target sent a teenager a maternity catalogue in the mail based on her data and her father saw it and went to to the store to yell at the manager before finding out that she was indeed pregnant.
You could write books about the layers of symbolism in this movie down to the names like Truman is the only true man in this fake world. Absolute gem of a movie, thanks for that reaction. It's been way too long since I last rewatched this treasure of cinema. And looking at the state of today's entertainment industry vomiting out "reality" formats at an alarming rate, it was alarmingly accurate.
Also gotta love that the spotlight that fell at the start of the movie has a name tag "Cyrius" wich IIRC is the name of a Star... There's litteraly a star that fell on earth lol...

If you actually read the full masking tape label, it says "Sirius (9 Canis Major)" which means each one of these lights, or possibly multiple of them, are supposed to cue as a single collective system (Canis Major, which contains Sirius, [the brightest star in the Northern hemisphere, by the way,] has 8 main stars, but based on the fact that this is the 9th light on that constellation, it's possible that either Sirius required more lights due to being so bright and only one fell off, or that since they were emulating the entire sky, sun and all, that Sirius was the 9th light because technically there are thousands of stars in that same window of space despite Canis Major being only made up of the main 8.) That means, to put into perspective without just using the easy method of bringing up the weather-tech, that the stage of this dome doesn't just have normal sets of stage lighting like a normal theater that cue in different colors or patterns, but has thousands of lights on each section of the dome built to cue as different constellations in the night sky. That is fucking crazy and horrifying. They did ALL OF THAT just to trick an abandoned baby, the first corporate adoption ever, that was picked out of 6 specifically because Truman was preterm, and turn his life into an "authentic show."
INCREDIBLE MOVIE! Had to watch this prior to one of my freshman college courses. It was criminal that Jim Carrey didn't win an award for this film. He deserved one.

I would love to hear a lawyer break down how they would represent Truman in getting 20 odd years of pay from a network. He worked, got paid money for the job he was doing, to pay his "bills" and food.. but he didn't get paid for working as the most famous television star of all time.. or for the product placement and endorsements of every single thing he used and touched.
The trickiest bits would probably be those first 18 years, since the corporation was his legal parent. But that also means there would be child labor laws to contend with.
i always find it interesting that the audience in the film erupt in joy when Truman finally gets out. you'd think that they'll be disappointed because the Show is over, but no, it's the exact opposite. This movie works so well because Truman is such a goodhearted honest person, we as viewers enjoy watching him just as much as we root him to 'free' himself and discover the truth also this movie isn't trying to be overly preachy(unlike Hollywood nowdays) , the tone of drama, social commentary, and comedy is perfectly executed, and Carrey is the P e r f e c t actor for this role. Truly a timeless masterpiece
This film requires multiple viewings because it's so thick with easter eggs. Watch the scene again where Truman talks to Marion while he's restocking the vending machine. During the first shot where the camera is inside the machine, Marion is placing candy bars IN IT. But as the conversation goes on, Marion just keeps pulling them back out and putting them back in.
I have a theory that the set malfunctioning, with the light falling, the rain following him, the radio, everything was all because of the group of people Sylvia works with working to have the set fall apart so that way he could see through the lie.
Promotional materials for this movie reveal that Marlon is literally the only one in the town who feels guilty about manipulating Truman, to the point that in the real world, he's a borderline alcoholic and has even had drug problems in the past. In a deleted scene, he notices Truman attempting to escape, but doesn't say anything in order to give him a chance.
There's a deleted scene where the director and cast are discussing future plans for the Show, and one of the themes is finding a way for Truman to have a child with the new love interest and keeping both father and son stuck there. The worst thing is that the actress is like: "oh, yes, I don't care. " The only one who seems to show some empathy for Truman in that conversation is his "best friend".
For reference, the show had been running for 10,901 days when the film begins, and the show begins with Truman's birth, thus Truman is exactly 29 years, 10 months and 12 days old when the film begins.
The mirror scene were Truman draws the helmet with soap was improvised by Jim Carrey. Another amazing drama movie of his is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Sooo good.
This is such a great film. Peter Weir is one of those directors that you don’t automatically think of when putting together a Best Directors Ever list, but he really should be. He only made 13 films in 36 years, and so many of them are top tier classics. My personal favorites of his are The Year of Living Dangerously, Witness, Dead Poets’ Society, The Truman Show, and top of the list-Master and Commander.
Three interesting things. Knowing it’s all a show some things make more sense, for example the twins pushing him up against advertisements and that every camera shot is from a hidden camera, shown by the circular outline and obscured views, odd angles. The travel agent came out with a make-up bib on as they were not prepared for Truman to show up at the Travel Agency and had to hurriedly get her camera ready 😂 Also, this was Jim’s first serious role and no one knew if it would be a major flop or if he could pull it off.
This movie was a real trip back in '98. I saw it in the theater and I could never have dreamed how far ahead of its time it was. The majority of entertainment is now reality TV.
Love the fact the Ed Harris was a last min casting to replace a actor who dropped out last min. He had just days to prepare and knocked it out of the park.
That point about comedians in serious roles is so true, Steve Carell absolutely nailing his role in The Big Short is another great example of that. You guys so quiet at the end of the movie there shows how impactful this movie is, absolutely appropriate.
I think a great example of a series that knew when to end is The Good Place. Even though NBC and fans wanted more, Michael Schur (creator) said they had a layout for 4 seasons. And they didn't want to stretch it out and "tread water just because the water's warm."
Such a brilliant film. The emotional hit when he steps out of his 'life' at the finale is unforgettable. Carrey is pitch perfect here, and the Krystof character as played by Ed Harris was brilliant...the mad auteur!
Yeah, I think his performance in Eternal Sunshine is more gripping and varied. I prefer Truman Show as a movie but the contrast in quality is basically non-existent.
This is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I was lucky enough to see it in the theaters as a teenager. There are all kinds of little details that you'll only notice on multiple rewatches, and some great deleted scenes. Also, the movie is quite different from the original script. One of the early drafts was much darker and action-oriented. In the ending, Truman shoots down a helicopter, escapes off the set, has to sneak out of the studio, and nearly kills himself and Christof.

I remember when Truman said "That one's for free." After the spaceman on the mirror thing, the entire movie theater erupted cheering, cause we knew he knew.
I saw this movie back in highschool on a field trip and going into it I was like I've never heard of this it's gonna be a crappy movie and boy was I so beyond wrong, this movie is amazing and the fact that this movie essentially happened to a person named Nasubi in japan in the 90s makes the events of the movie so much more horrifying.

This is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen, and also one of Jim Carrey’s best roles. Still has that signature humor that makes us all love him, but he’s great at dramatic roles as well and I think that he’s more versatile than people realize. This character was a perfect blend of likable and hilarious while still making us sympathize with his situation and his lack of control in his life. I hate the idea of a child being raised by a film company just for a show. It’s something that isn’t that unrealistic when you think about it, I could absolutely see this as a reality at some point in our future when people get bored of regular reality tv and want something fresh and different.
I know it’s better for the “story” that Truman said his “in case I don’t see ya…” line, but i wish Truman had given the finger and said something like “f*** off” when the “creator” asked him to say something to world.

The great thing this movie has going for it is, it's so original that you don't know where it's going and it does not fall into tired tropes and formulas. Another Jim Carrey movie where he again plays more drama than comedy is "the Majestic," which I really liked, and I think is quite underrated.
Honestly, this is one of the more frightening, paranoia inducing movies ever made. Truman slowly realizing that his entire life is a lie, even his parents, wife, and best friend, and that he is literally up against the world, even the moon, the sun, and the weather? Brr...

The actors playing his wife and best friend are named for Meryl Streep and Marlon Brando. Laura Linney, who plays Meryl, said that her character had necessarily grown into a rather ruthless young woman, negotiating hard terms for her contract renewals - she got a $10,000 bump every time she and Truman had sex. 🤣 If you like this kind of story, you should definitely check out _Series 7: The Contenders._ It's an episode of a fake reality show where the contestants have to hunt each other down and kill each other. Each week a contestant is eliminated until there's only one left, and that one goes on into another round of episodes. It's fantastic. Stars Catherine Smith, who played Buffalo Bill's kickass victim in _The Silence of the Lambs,_ and she is FIRE.
this movie is the perfect social criticism. Really confronts you with how messed up society is and makes you question how far is too far. You could literally discuss this movie for hours and hours on end. Definitely one of the best movies ever made absolutely brilliant and original. This exact concept can never be done again in film because it's such an amazing concept

Ugh the audible sounds I made when I saw this video!! I’ll never forget telling my friend how I sometimes feel like everyone is in on a joke about me that idk about and she was like “lol ok Truman” I was confused and then she pulled up this movie. It’s been one of my favorites ever since, SO underrated and one of Jim Carey’s best performances if you ask me 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

Fun fact.. im a therapist, and while i was still in college, we learned about a social contagion literally called Truman Syndrome. After this movies initial release ages ago.. it caused a sizeable enough of a cluster of people to become so paranoid and believe that they were living in a situation like Trumans. Center of their worlds.. being constantly filmed and watched. Kinda bizarro funny.. Theres a ton of everyday characteristics/interests people have, that if mixed correctly in someones head, that easily identified the phenomena. General, Social Anxiety, bit of ego, and, most important, susceptibility to paranoia or conspiracy theories. So yeah, lol.. after this movie hit the theatres, a brief social contagion spread that became known as Truman Syndrome. More ya know.. 👀👀
Its a pretty smart movie. No commercials but they manage to advertise things, like the random things his wife talks about. They don’t want him to leave the town so they make a way to keep him there. But there’s also malfunctions too, but also ways to cover them up. The other girl was mostly an extra but they didn’t want him to end up with her but rather wanted a made up relationship. They literally control everything!! I love the music, and the ending makes me tear up 😢
This was my favorite Jim Carrey film until Eternal Sunshine came out and it became far and away my favorite of his performances. As I got older, I found his comedic performances less and less interesting, but his dramatic roles I grew to love more and more.
So, when I worked at the South Pole Station in 2008, I used to tell the new people, jokingly of course, that they weren't actually in Antarctica. I would quiz them about how they had arrived at the South Pole. At the time, the majority of the personnel were flown on a C-130 transport plane. These aircraft don't *exactly* have windows, they're more like 3 inch portholes. The flight from McMurdo Station is roughly 5 hours. *Most* people fall asleep on the flight. So, that was my reasoning. They fell asleep and were transported to the "dome" that is a stand-in for the real South Pole Station due to the erosion of the continent from some wacky reason. I would also tell them that if they just walked about 1 mile "that way" (pointing in any direction) they'd run into the wall, follow that in either direction and they'd find a door and be able to get back to New Zealand. I can't say that I was ever able to get the whole thing out without cracking some, which lent to no one ever believing me, but it was a fun way to pass the time in a place where there isn't a whole lot to do. "What is... HAPPENING!?" when Trueman screaming at his wife and when he hugs his dad and cry.. i think that was the moment when he finally realised his whole life was staged ... is the moment when this movie got's me. And prove it Jim Carry is a great actor.
A strong commentary on consumerist culture when Truman show is such a major facet of everyone's life, and yet they just change the channel after the show is over.
I remember a teacher in middle school put this on in class for us to analyze the themes presented in the movie (god complex, freedom/improsonment, mass media (and this was way before reality tv was even a thing), etc... It's been one of my all time fav's ever since (yes, Eternal Sunshine is also in my top 5). Even just the bold way of filmmaking - it's an hour into the movie before the audience gets filled in on the 'show'. The end is perfection.
You guys are right that Jim Carrey’s best movies are the ones where he plays dramatic roles. BUT, if you think that THIS was his best role: You need to watch *Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)* his TRUE BEST ROLE! (And a total mind trip, with an all-star cast!)

You nailed it - ask any actor and they will tell you comedy - with all of its nuances in delivery, timing, etc - is the hardest thing to pull off so it really comes as no shock that really naturally talented comedians (Ex. Robin Williams) also have solid dramatic acting chops... its just a question of whether audiences are willing to accept them in a serious role.
As a person who was not a Jim Carey fan and did not find him funny. I was amazed at how good he was and this is one of my favorite movies. He won an Golden Globe for his performance and I believe Ed Harris was nominated for an Oscar.
This is one of Jim Carey’s best films, and in my opinion, his next best is another serious film he did early on in his career, called ‘Doing time on maple drive’. He was amazing in it and it is well worth watching.
One of my 'repeat' faves! I've lost count of the number of times I've watched The Truman Show. ~ I totally agree about having a set ending for a show. Unfortunately, many shows get cancelled before they get there. One of my favorite shows is The Good Place - four short seasons with a perfect ending.
Definitely check out "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" for a similarly groundbreaking performance by Jim Carrey, in one of the farthest and best departures from his usual style. And, if you love that movie too, I beg you two to give my favourite movie of all time a try "Synecdoche, New York". It's written and directed by the guy who wrote Eternal Sunshine, and I promise you it'll be the most unique movie you've ever seen, money back guarantee. If I had to try and quantify it, it'd be a philosophical dark comedy fever dream. It's beautiful and sad and isolating and comforting and hilarious. Philip Seymour Hoffman's magnum opus performance, in my opinion. Please, please give it a shot. I think it would resonate with you guys really really well.

Fun Fact: There is an entire psychological disorder that this movie is responsible for creating. Many people with this disorder believe themselves to be in the Truman Show or something similar. Fun Fact 2: The Truman Show is loosely based on a new Twilight Zone episode called Special Service (season 3, episode 29) which aired in 1989, almost ten years before the Truman Show was released.

I really love how when truman leaves we dont see him again. We dont get to see what happens next for him. Because in reality we are the watchers. We're the ones who trapped him in there, and we dont get to know how it ends for him.
