@Kalda Forn Shame culture works?! Ha! Who told you that? The other people that shame? Obviously, you’re sick in the head and should just leave her channel alone.
@Kalda Forn Shaming doesn’t work. It’s toxic and you know what, shaming people will only make them insecure and vulnerable. And this is based off personal experience and knowing tons of other people who have been in the same boat. You’re just a horrible human being.
@@dirkspotproductions3834 I totally missed this until now! Thanks for fighting the good fight! I've blocked them :) (also lol I give zero fucks if other people don't like that I'm fat so haha to them)
Hey! Just wanted to say I loved The Ivies!!! You did an amazing job. I really hope it gets the credit it deserves. It was campy sometimes but never in a way that wasn’t fun and intriguing. I ATE IT UP. So proud of you and want you to know you are a huge inspiration to me! You changed my life, I’m 16 and write so much more ever since I found your channel!
Congrats! You’re a godsend to up-and-coming young writers who want to know all the nitty gritty, boring details of the publishing industry. This channel is such a treasure trove.
Congrats on your second printing!!! And the behind the scenes information was so interesting! I definitely don't find the nitty gritty of it all dry or boring 🤣
Love this video! Ive been so curious about print runs and a have a base idea thanks to questions I’ve asked my agent, but it’s cool to hear from you and also an editor about more details
I absolutely love your videos! Congrats on your second print! I have recently decided to pursue my dream of being a published author and am currently about a quarter of the way through my zero draft. It's nerve wrecking out there and your videos are a saving grace. Thank you!
I got my copy!! And congratulations on a second print run. Always stay realistic (it's one of the things I love about your channel), but we love celebrating your victories too! And it allows me to live vicariously until I finally get around to finishing my own novel... Which I guess means I should really be working on that right now instead of watching youtube videos...
I work in production for a small publishing company (it's the department everyone forgets), and this stuff is actually very interesting (to me anyway XD). I also have a weird interest in binding methods and materials. It'll be hard if ever I publish a book not to be pestering the publisher about what paper stock and cover finishes they're planning for it haha! We print our books in the US, so we haven't had as much of an issue with shipping over the pandemic, although it does mean a 4-6 week difference between US release dates and UK/rest of world. Honestly, my biggest work-related fear is that someone rings me up one day to tell me that one of the shipping boats has gone down in a storm and the entire print run is at the bottom of the Atlantic XD Congratulations on your second print run! That's a great achievement!
Love the insight here! Congrats on print run #2!! I feel like the whole “the number is an indication of publisher confidence but also relative depending on if u sell under or above” thing is similar to advances. Not the end all be all but one of those “Important Numbers.”
Love this cause this is random and probably few sources about 2nd print runs for like authors who arent the "one in a million" authors up there. 😍 WE LOOOVE THIS ALEXA 💓💓💓💓💓💓
What’s kind of baffling about these print numbers, is that (at least on the graphic novel side of things), RU-vidrs with 100k subs can move 10,000-20,000 books on their own via KS/IGG.
10-20k is really good sales in the publishing field AFAIK. Alexa has a big platform on here. a normal debut author without such a platform can expect to sell probably 5-7k if they're lucky
@@etluxaeterna Yeah, that’s what’s kinda crazy. Especially since graphic novels are more expensive and typically shorter reads. But I guess a single 22 page comic is like $5, so it makes some sense?
I love that you talk about the nitty-gritty of the publishing industry. I want to also say I really loved The Ivies. I feel you went into that book with big story energy. I bought the audiobook but I am grabbing a physical copy tomorrow. So excited!
Well I’m so excitedfor you!! And I loved all the behind the scenes info on this subject. Also congrats on your Author Portal! The second you said that I assumed you would be thrilled to have all that data! 😂
You and your fans might hate me -- I'm not much of a hard cover reader. I like paperback books, and not just because they fit within the frame of my glasses. It's just what I'm accustomed to.
can you make a video on "earning out", advances, and how royalties work? I find that interesting and hopefully, one day those will be problems I have to know about ;)
This was a fun one! I work in procurement and supply chain management sucks tbh. It's funny how many people don't understand just HOW MUCH we get from China or India (or anywhere else outside the US). There are parts we need, critically, to build our products and they *only* come from India/China. It's a domino effect of anger--management upset, production sitting on their hands, and of course, the end customer who won't get their item for 14+ weeks or more.... Whew. Anyway! All my sympathy for the poor folks in publishing wishing and hoping their crates & containers will arrive. Big congrats on your second run! It's definitely worth celebrating. :) The Ivies looks damn good on my shelf. And now I've got to go make sure I have orders in for the upcoming books I want before I can't get them.
I have questions... 1. Do thrillers/mysteries sell *faster* than other genres due to the higher impact of spoilers? 2. Are some demographics buying higher percentages of digital-format (ebook/audio) compared to paper? 3. Are books still considered successful if encouraging digital sales supplement disappointing paper sales? I mostly buy ebooks due to space constraints. I might not read everything I buy, which is fine because supporting authors and the industry is valuable. Is there anything we should know about how to make sure our favorite authors actually get their royalties? (Kindle Unlimited appears to pay for pages *read*, and readers might not know that.)
I just found out my local library ordered a copy of the Ivies and might order more for the other few branches. But congrats on selling fairly quick and the second print run
Fun fact: You can tell which print run a book was made in from the title page verso (backside of the title page). Most publishers will have a row of numbers called a printers key, which can count forwards, backwards, or alternating from the center depending on the publisher. On the first print run, all the numbers are intact, but with each subsequent print run, the printer will remove a number in the sequence. This practice comes from the days where it was really difficult to change printer plates for a book, so the easiest way to track the print run was just to file a number off.
Congrats, and love hearing about how things are done in the US! Everything about the tricky calculations and estimates that the publisher does is the same here, but Norwegian publishers have to base advances on print runs too (so wild six figure deals dont really happen here, for better or worse? Earning out your advance is definitely more common as a result tho)
I just want to say that the Ivies is the first physical book I’ve read in…almost two years. (10/2019) and i loved every minute. It’s so beautiful and the different formats were cool. It was also nice to physically curl up with a book. So thanks for that! (I’m also so glad I got it now that it can become a rarity for a bit 😳)
Hi Alexa... I think I found a typo on "The Ivies". Chapter 16, sentence 2 says: "----what if it was a plant? Sent to make him look worried." Is it supposed to say "plant" or "plan"? Maybe I misinterpreted the sentence, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong... I just thought you wanted to know for future reprints. My interest is to help, not judge your work... I actually love your channel ❤. Enjoying the book so far! Almost done reading it.👍 Glad things are going great for you! 😃
It's gamechanging. It alleviates my anxiety on some level b/c I can access basic data about my book without pestering my agent or editor. And eventually it will show me returns too, apparently!
That question of how many print runs does it take to earn out an advance is one that’s really impossible to answer because it’ll be so different for each book and situation. It depends on the advance size, the print run size, etc. so answering it for a particular book isn’t really helpful at all (because while some people may just ask out of curiosity, I find that most who ask questions like that are trying to get a baseline to apply to their own books). I mean...my debut earned out on the first print run, immediately. Like, by the release date. But that doesn’t mean that every book has the ability to earn out on the first print run. (And I had a modest advance, so it’s a lot easier to earn that out.) And someone else may need four print runs to earn out....but that doesn’t have any bearing on the next author’s advance or sales.
Yeah, I work in production, so I get to see the printing costs, and it's so hard to work out because the bigger the print run the cheaper it is per copy. You're not necessarily making the same profit for every book you sell if you do multiple print runs because the printing costs can vary between runs.
Me who reads primarily digital except for graphic novels and manga... pre-order the books I do want a physical copy and largely don't worry. Though I know the feeling of running out of room since I have none in my place which is why I shifted to digital.
So I have been watching your videos for a bit. Your videos have been super helpful and inspiring. I do not read or write in your genre/category ever, but I genuinely love your insight so much I decided to buy the full set of Alexa Donne books on amazon today after watching this video. I don’t care if it’s not my typical interest, I’ve got to read your books like right now haha. Not sure if you’ll see this comment but just thought I’d let you know your expanding my horizons.
Amazon still hasn't sent my order... I don't know if I should try to buy from another seller or not... I know shipping to Brazil is a nightmare, but it's the first time they are taking so long to ship my pre-orders...
Fun to see The Ivies and Brightly Burning (and The Stars We Steal) on your videos, but they're mostly blocked in the shot. The prime spot on your videos is where Only Mostly Devastated and the three books to the right sit. You should switch the positions if you want viewers to see your books more clearly! :)
Second printing! Second printing! Second printing! How f'ing cool is that? Congrats. Since something like 98% of trad published authors sell fewer than 5000 ... You are doing great. Go you.
I was wondering, if you don’t sell as much as the publisher thought, Will it affect whether you publish another book with them or not? Sorry if this is silly.
Do second and third print runs tend to be a similar size of the first or different (assuming the book doesnt go viral and they have to print a million overnight)?
Read the ivies.... finished it in 1 day...one complaint...sierra's felt incomplete...but srsly, u writing thriller is probably the best decision ever!!
Different editions generally have some editorial differences. Print runs can be straight reprints (exactly the same text and cover and all that) or different editions (changes to the text, a fresh cover maybe).
