What is edible glitter and how does it work?
Have you tried it in the latte, beer, or cocktails?
There are two forms of glitter. Edible for food and drinks
and non-toxic for arts and crafts.
It adds no additional flavor to your drink
Common ingredients in edible glitter sugar, cornstarch, Acacia (gum arabic) color additives, mica powder pigments. All FDA-approved and safe to consume
May be used 0.07% by weight in distilled spirits

Licensed cosmetologist here! You'd be surprised to learn that there sadly is no difference between pure micas and edible glitter. (I say sadly because despite the lack of scientific evidence, the country validated the safety of ingesting edible glitter by abusing the "less than 2%" food additive ingredient rule) The 'edible' is a loose label used to inform the buyer that there at least is no plastics/known biohazards as vlad stated. There is still a lot of unknowns when it comes to ingestion of mica, which is why they recommend you use an incredibly sparse amount and only on rare occasions. BUT, if you are someone who suffers from diverticulitis, id use caution. So if you own any pure cosmetic grade micas or loose eyeshadow pigments that state its pure mica, that's edible glitter. No need to buy edible glitter.

I'm going to drop this comment here since this comment has so many likes and it's relevant to what I want to say. Mica powders are impossible to track down and almost always mined by children. These are terrible dangerous conditions and children often die or are trapped in these Mica mines. I love natural glitters and I love non-toxic glitters that are safe for the environment but we need to find a way to use and harvest these products that don't harm people

The FDA says it’s okay to eat vanilla flavoring ,caffeine , saw dust(cellulose) , and a bunch of other crap, fluoride is now on the NIH site as a neurotoxin and lowers IQ of CHILDREN! But caffeine comes from mammal URINE! Like wtf and vanilla “Flavoring” comes from some beaver butt gland! From a freakin beavers ass! Let alone the amount of bugs allowed in peanut butter it’s a lot, the cockroaches in ground coffee and chocolate too😑, oh and a ton more.... it’s easily found by googling and going to the .gov websites which are the government websites.

My mom actually used to own a bakery, it’s kinda suspicious stuff, but it at least won’t kill you. A lot of aesthetic things in baking are technically edible, but probably don’t eat more than a bit. Once I received a few glitter cupcakes, but I didn't trust the glitter at all even though I know edible glitter does exist. Just so you know: mica, the shimmering, non toxic mineral used in both edible drinks and make up is often collected in mines by children in India. Let's try to not support child labour, buy only sinthetic mica :)

@@Nomidfarms There's absolutely no way to prove where the mica came from, that's the problem. Mica is usually mined by children in India and it's extremely unsafe for them-also they are kept poor on purpose while the companies that sell you the stuff prosper. It is very difficult to trace mica and therefore even if it says it was ethically sourced, that may not be true. Many children die in the mines and are unable to attend school. I like shiny stuff, but we should pass on this.

As you've mentioned, this consists of mica powder pigments, now I'll take this at face value because I know nothing about edible glitter except for what you've said. I still wouldn't support edible glitter because it has mica powder pigments, which come from mica. And the mining of mica is a dangerous job that endangers the lives of people who supply raw mica. Moreover, mining for mica weakens the soil or ground it is buried in, which may result to it caving in.

The only way to guarantee that the glitter you buy is actually edible is if you buy the kind that is essentially just dyed sugar crystals which are chunky, one solid color, and hence easy to tell the difference.
