Floor sleeper of 21 years here, in Michigan. No carpet in the bedroom and have little problem with drafts while sleeping. My secret to staying warm is using blankets instead of sheets on my mat in the cold months. Right now I'm using the velvety Bedsure blankets from Amazon, one wrapped around the mat and the rest piled on top. I'm sandwiched between the blanket layers, nice and toasty. In general, I don't use the duvet style sheets at all, I just buy flat sheets and wrap the mat before bed in warm weather. I'm also a side sleeper. If I find a spot that is a little bit thin, I just boost the padding by folding a blanket or towel and using it under the mat. Works great. You could use a yoga mat under the sleep mat as well. As for getting up off the mat, I'm convinced that the movements involved in floor sleeping help to keep me limber at 58 years old. I don't really exercise, but I get off the floor with no issues. A lot of people my age can't do that at all.
Talking about bugs.. i have decided to do floor sitting with an aim to do floor sleeping. I am currently sitting where 2 days ago a huge Huntsman walked from under my couch, between me feet and to under the TV. But being an Aussie, such spiders are part of life. I caught it and put it outside. Day 1 of sitting i felt drowsy, lay down where i was and began to drift off. Getting up of the ground is a forgotten habit but i think an essential one.
All I ever wanted to do as a kid was sleep on the floor 😂 It was the biggest treat ever to have all our beds on the floor and hang out and watch movies. As an adult, I have had some of the best nights sleep ever while staying in traditional Japanese inns. In the winter they had an electric blanket that went on top of you rather than under you like we see in our bed based cultures. I’m one with mobility issues now so couldn’t really use a floor futon now. Great info Sarah 👍
I visited Japan 20 years ago during winter and stayed at my friend’s Grandma’s house in the countryside where it was snowing, we slept on the floor but it had an electric blanket on the bed, that my friend said to keep turned on. The first night I turned it off because I thought it wasn’t safe. But I was so freezing …I learnt my lesson and left it on all night the 2nd night 😆
@@dianeibsen5994 it was so long ago NEW YEAR’s 2022 I can’t remember exact details… all I remember is the futon/thin mattress and electric blanket. It was my first and only (so far) time to Japan, I don’t know much about the sleeping culture there 😆
My 8 year old constantly sleeps on the floor no matter what bed options he has available. Haha. We have scorpians too. Spoiler, they can climb up your regular beds, bunk beds, couches etc. Gag.
Hi can you tell me why you switched? and what kind of setup you had? How thick your futon or shikibu tan was how many layers did you have a tatami Mat?
I think the major reason why beds were invented and why people don't sleep on floors is due to bugs. If you can keep your house clean then you can definitely sleep on the Floor but don't try it in a cockroach or rat infested house or area. Also college students are an exception. Even though they don't keep their place very clean they sleep on the Floor to save money and call it vibes ....
I've been sleeping on the floor for the past two days just using a mattress topper as a bed and I have no more lower back (sciatica) or hip pain. I have a little discomfort in my neck but I think I just need a smaller pillow.
This was exactly my scenario when I moved. I hadn't moved my bed yet and just grabbed my topper. Slept on it for 2 days and never slept better in my life. Slept through the night and no back pain (neck pain from too thick of a pillow). When I moved my bed I slept like crap again. I decided to get rid of my bed. Been floor sleeping on a 5in mattress topper for 3 years now and will never go back. No back pain. The getting up and down off the floor everyday has helped with flexibility and general muscle stability.
For anyone looking for a Floor Bed. Costco has "Camping Mats" that are literally made of thick memory foam. My husband and I used two pushed together for 3 years so far. Very comfortable :) they might only sell them in the spring/summer tho :( I think they are $60-$70
I've been sleeping on the floor for at least 2 years, I think. And honestly, I've been sleeping better on the floor too. Less back pain and all that. Anyway, I recently bought a Tablebed. It's a big table that converts into a bed if needed. Now I've got the option to sleep on the floor or on the bed. And I have to say, it's really great to have both options. P.S. It's always been a bit awkward to tell certain people that I don't have a bed in my home. But now that's not a problem anymore!
re: the Japanese in winter: They have something that's basically a table with a heater installed on the bottom of it that they use in the winter (their houses generally do not have central heating).
I realized you can just put some blankets down and use that as a sleeping surface. Polyurethane fleece blankets work well. They are mold and moisture resistant.
Oh yeah… no more back pain for me and getting up at first I fell dizzy but now I get up in one sling up. My coordination got better when getting up from the ground up. So I guess that’s good.
The idea of bugs in the tropics was making me wonder ever since you shared this change originally but your explanation makes sense. Certainly I could see it being cooler. From Canada 🇨🇦 so tropical challenges are almost incomprehensible but I see how it works now. I’ve seen some of those Nature type videos about all the amazing poisonous things in Australia. 😱 I’ll take bears, Lynx, wolves and coyotes any day!😂
Bahahahahaha I feel the same about the cold weather, never owned mittens or beanies... My car would probably freeze and I would have no idea what to do 🤣
I'm seriously looking in to this because of your videos! The Japanese use tatami mats under their shikibuton and it sounds like that really helps with air flow and insulation.
My husband is all in, we liked when we had our mattress on the floor to co sleep w little nursing babies, we just need to save up. This goes great with our movement goals for our family, we are trying to add in more floor sitting and different movements to our daily lives (nutritious movement/katie bowman).
Since you post cleaning videos, I thought maybe the title was supposed to say "floor sweeping" haha. Interesting video. I always thought floor sleeping was bad for you. I think this can work for people who are able to get up from low surfaces. Honestly, I would try it. I sleep on my back and I prefer firm, flat surface. Good video.
Wow that’s great that your sciatica has disappeared! Woo hoo 🎉🎉🎉 Cool that it was your hubby’s idea too! Didn’t have to bring him on board lol 😅 Bugs can crawl on a bed no matter where it is lol. I found a spider crawling on hubbys side of the bed recently when I was doing sheets.
I’m most happy to give credit when it’s due… however is case Miss Minnie 🐈⬛ has no interest in pest control 🤣 she would much rather watch us and pass judgement 😉
@@SmallChanges lol! I live in NYC on the first floor of an old building. Pests happen here. So I really appreciated your video. Thumbnail of the year. Lol. I will become a floor sleeper someday, once I move out of here. I would have to agree that Minnie deserves no props. Lol. She's a cutie tho! 😊👍😸
My one concern about putting the futon out in the sun is if a bird were to poop on it. How would I clean the futon or prevent the bird poop. Assuming I don’t have a covered deck/patio.
Great video! We have been sleeping on the floor with wool filled mattress toppers, but they are quite heavy. The ones you have look fairly easy to move around? I’m wondering how much they weigh? And also if there’s stitching or something that makes them easy to fold for daytime? Thank you!! 🙏
Thank you for the video and for answering alot of questions. I have chemical injury..MCS, and I'm wondering how you deal with bug spray and "bug control" does it make you feel bad or make you sick?
I clicked on this video because I wanted to do some research to see how well it works out for others. I had to leave my house a few months ago because a narcissist lived with me, and it wasn't safe. She stole everything out of my house, including my bed, and I can't afford one right now. I think there are pros and cons. My back doesn't hurt as much during the day anymore. I still get back pains but only when I'm laying down. When I first lie down, if I put a pillow under my back, I have fewer problems. The only major problem I've had, I live in an apartment building now and cockroaches come out of the walls and crawl on the floor sometimes they crawl onto my blanket, but I get used to it, so it's not much of a problem for me anymore. I'd recommend the floor if you have a bad back. I have scoliosis and two crooked vertebrates, and the floor has reduced a great deal of back pain. It does kind of make you appreciate sleeping in a bed when you don't have one, ha. It takes a while to get used to though, so if you are not comfortable, I'd recommend giving it some time.
Love the idea of floor sleeping as long as I have hardwood floors. I would rather sleep standing up than on a carpet floor since I am a clean freak and no matter how hard you try, carpets are the most disgusting thing ever
Hello there, Thank you for sharing this video. Just wondering did you also get your children shikibutons from japanache or another alternative. Also would love to know if you're happy with the your shikibuton you have. Thanks again 🙏
I still adore mine!! I miss it when we are away from home ❤️ my kids beds came from Costco but I don’t think they sell them anymore, they were called a versamat ❤️❤️
@@SmallChanges thanks Sarah. We are in the process to switch all our beds out and I'm so excited for my shikibuton. Thanks for sharing your experiences/info 🙏
I just watched a video of your house tour ( old house) I loved that house but your new one is beautiful too. I could sleep on the floor but I'd never be able to get up 😁. Have you always had a cat?
What's actually weird is spending extra money on a completely unnecessary piece of furniture like a platform bed frame because random people on the internet might think you're weird if you don't
@@otay2188 I don't give af about "random people on the internet." I'm talking about scenarios like convincing one's spouse to pointlessly ditch the bedroom furniture, or what one's date might think when you move the romance to the bedroom and it's just a pad on the floor. If people want to be weird and unconventional, and everybody else's feelings be damned, good for them. But some of us realize that in the real world, weirdness for weirdness's sake can have undesirable side effects, and sometimes compromise is the way to go, especially when there are no down sides to the compromise.
