Hello loves. This is a video I have been putting off for quite some time now but I felt like the timing was right and I should answer your questions. This is a very hard topic for me to talk about and I want to apologize if anything I said came off rude or is misunderstood, and for getting so emotional at times. I wanted to give you an insight into what has been going on in my life the past couple of years and be completely transparent with you all. It was very hard to finally record and then let the whole internet see. I will see you guys soon with a new video next week. Xoxo, Lauren

For everyone having trouble viewing: I got told if you watch using chrome or through the link in my Instagram bio (not the RU-vid app) it will let you play the full video! Thank you all for watching and your support! I would like to add that there were some details that weren't discussed because I am not comfortable sharing them on the internet. I wanted to share as much as I could and I hope you understand that some things I would like to keep private. Thank you for hearing my story!

Girl, I’m a 32 year old senior at the University of Alabama (Bama by Distance) while working a full time job. I can’t imagine being on campus but I’m almost a decade older than you! Don’t let anyone make you feel bad or weird about being a couple years older. Everyone has their own path in life and you’re finding your way on your own time.

I went to college first at 19, stayed back in first grade, I didn’t do well and got kicked out. Went back at 20 and kicked out again. Went back again at 20-21 and graduated with honors and a nursing degree. Now, I’m a nurse anesthetist after getting my masters. It DOESN’T matter how old you are. Do you!!!

I took a gap year after high school because I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life...and also because I missed all the college application deadlines (I'm a terrible procrastinator). Going into my freshman year I was super self conscious about being older than everyone else even though it was only by one year, and looking back now, I realize how ridiculous that was. I came to find that in each and every class I've taken there were always at least 5 or 6 people in their mid to late twenties (out of a group of 30, usually). I got to know a lot of them and it really put into perspective how little the timeline for one's educational career actually mattered. Like you, a lot of them joined the military beforehand or had children (or both) and put off school until they were ready. I ended up meeting my boyfriend (3 years my senior) freshman year who he himself had taken a 3 or 4 year gap after high school, and we're currently on the same level, credits-wise. It was so freeing to know that it doesn't matter how long it takes to get to where you want to be, as long as you get there eventually. Everybody's got their own path to take. I hope everything's going great for you in school!

This comment was really encouraging, im not planning on going to college until im around 28 because there are other things in my life that take the priority 💓 that being said, I still worry somedays that I'm waiting "too long" or "itll never happen because I didnt do it soon enough", seeing someone else do it really encourages me to not rush my life

Reading this 4 years later.... I am currently a SSG in the army, finally went to college starting last fall at 25 years old and i even rushed and joined a sorority (go ADPI!) but seeing these comments are great. Gap years or joining the military for gals like us (5 gap years actually) can really be the BEST case scenario! I love hearing other success stories about this!

OMG Yes! I'm a 29 year old junior and I was worried about the huge age difference being a problem. But I'm slowly coming to terms with "I'm pursing this education for ME and NOT THEM!" I really wish I had taken gap years before starting college because I was immature and naive to realize what I really wanted in my life. I wish more people normalized that everyone has different timelines and as you said "there are no rules."

Next year, hopefully, I will be a 23 almost 24 year old freshman! Honestly, I feel a lot more mentally prepared for college. The stigma of wasting your late teen years on higher education definitely needs to be eradicated. That time should be taken to grow into yourself, to decide firmly on where your life is going.

Don't sweat it hun, I'm just now staring college and I'm 24. Took a 5 year gap because I got married right out of high-school, and then decided to have kids. I was going to go back when I was 21 after I had my first daughter, but life happened and I became a single mom. I had a gap life! Due to my father dying in high school, mentally I couldn't finish school. I completed it as an adult. I didn't go to college then either. I got married and had kids. I ended up at uni (that is college here in Australia) at the fantastic age of 40. I am now 46 and doing a Master of Social Work. The thing with 'plans' is that they can be changed. Life isn't a clear path. It looks like a drunk sailor on shore leave..... all over the place. But that is where the learning and adventures happen when you least expect it. And yeah I'm a 46 year old watching a 22 year old in college in the USA. Meh. Your life fascinates me (psychology major lol). But you are also really sweet so I think of you kind of like if I had of had a daughter I would hope she would have been like you.

as a girl from the south (i'm from SC) i can confirm that they really want you to do life in that order exactly. everyone thinks i'm crazy because i don't want kids and they tell me things like i'm only 17 and i'll change my mind. that'll never happen. i want to thrive in my career and travel the world more than kids. that path isn't meant for everyone and that's ok. you'll end up where you're meant to be regardless

I'm from Texas so I definitely, definitely, definitely know about the pressure of trying to complete specific stages in life in the "correct" order at the "correct" time that the South brings. (Totally not saying it doesn't exist anywhere else!) I've always been the youngest in my class, I graduated high school in 2017 as well, in my line of cousins, the youngest grandchild, etc. so I put the pressure of completing college and starting a family and finding a job extremely hard on myself. I feel like I have to do things even earlier than everybody because I'm 20 now and I'm about to be a senior in college. It's such a difficult mindset to shake and we shouldn't even be thinking about trying to have the perfect schedule for ourselves when clearly it's in God's hands and He never lets us down! You got this girl!❤️

I’m so happy I’ve found your channel because I haven’t heard anyone else talk about an experience like this! When I got to college at 18, something switched in my brain and my mental health took a downward spiral, socially, I was having the time of my life, but mentally, physically, and academically, I was struggling more than I even thought was possible for me. To make a very long and complicated story short, at 21, I left that college, came home for a year, and am now starting at a new college as a transfer sophomore at 22! For the first time since high school, I’m actually excited about my education and actually have a positive outlook on my future! Thank you for sharing your story because it normalizes the idea that there’s no set schedule for life, everyone is on their own journey💛💛

I started community college right after high school, and after graduation I took a semester off before going to university for my bachelors degree. Even during my bachelors program I had to take another break but this was a whole year. I just turned 26 & after 8 years since graduating high school I JUST finished my final college class, ever, on Friday. It’s okay to follow your own path & do what you need to do for yourself during the “gap year(s)” 💛

Hey girl!! I just finished watching this video and when I say I cried I mean I freaking cried. I’m a 24 year old going through my second semester of Nursing school, and I have always felt ashamed and looked down upon because I’m a 24 year old college student. I felt that anxiety of not finding true friends because of my age, that I wouldn’t find those that I could relate to and form genuine friendships with. However, God always puts people in your life who are going to love you and help you be the best you you can be, so don’t give up on finding those peeps!! Your patience and faith in God and His plan for you is inspiring!! Keep the faith and always remember you’re right where you’re supposed to be!!

This video sticks close to my heart. I took two Gap years before going to medical school. I kept telling myself that I was to old to go to medical school with people who are younger with me and the funny thing is that everyone asumes I’m their age. I just feel so left out and behind of everyone of my friends. Everyone is getting married and having babies. But now I’m in my third year of medical school and guess everyone has their own path. Although I would love to go back to college and do more and have more of a college experience!

I relate to you so much. I was the opposite- I graduated high school a year early aka one of the youngest in my class. A couple weeks after I graduate from high school, my Dad is diagnosed with a terminal illness called ALS, so I last minute decide to go to the college closest to home even though it wasn't my dream school. My first week of college, my grandmother passes away. All of the stress of everything ended up with me getting sick and I was diagnosed with 2 brain tumors about a year and a half later. For that reason, my entire college experience, I was struggling and suffering, not able to take a full load of classes and no idea what I would want to do someday. I ended up being unable to go to school in person after my Dad passed because I was so ill, so I transferred to an out of state top level college that offered online bachelor's degrees. I thought being a student at a prestigious college would make me happy, but it didn't- I'm so unhappy. So I decided to just get an associate's degree at the local community college (I am graduating with that degree this semester)!!!! I never took a break to heal from all the pain I went through, so I am taking a gap year now this upcoming school year and then I will be transferring to a college in person to finish a bachelor's degree. I relate to you SO much about being sensitive about your age and where you are in your college journey vs others. Our stories are not told very often- I am from the South too and I see my friends getting married and having children, in grad school etc. and I am so upset at how little I have accomplished even though I am only in my early 20s too. Thank you for sharing your story- I finally feel less alone.

As someone who has had things thrown at her too, I can tell you that even though it is hard - education is for everyone, no matter what. You are doing what is what is best for you and like you say you shouldn't compare yourself to people i'v done it so many times I look at all the girls I went to school with they have done college, done University, are off married having babies etc. Then there is me age 29! In my second year of college and applying to go to university next year (I'm in England) il be nearly 30 when I start and 33 when I finish and being older makes me more focused and studious knowing what I want to do now, I thought this stuff would never happen for me either. You are doing amazing and you are doing brilliantly and don't let anyone tell you otherwise 💕

I wish I would have taken a gap year right after high school. My first year of college I wasn’t in the right mind set to take it seriously. I didn’t get into my first choice university and was apathetic. I wasted so many credits by taking random classes to see if I was interested enough to major in it. I think if you’re unsure about your major going into university it’s best to experience life a bit and gain some perspective before getting into it.

When you were talking about God, I could totally relate to that! As Muslim, we are told to pray to god for anything we want. But we are also told that sometimes our prayers won't be answered because God has something better planned for us. I have experienced this feeling so many times, I wasn't able to go to the Uni I wanted to but I was able to go through a better route, god helped me so much and he enlightened me so much as well. I learnt not to blame others for my own failures and I learnt to remain strong and think positive and think big. I am so grateful to God for changing my life little by little and hopefully one day my dream to achieve so much will be granted.

I’m 21 years old and I start college next month to get my bachelors in Human studies and social services to become a therapist/counselor. To be honest when I graduated from high school I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, and even though it hurts to know that most of the people I went to school with will be graduating from college this year I feel like I needed those 4 gap years to figure myself out. I try to look at the advantages instead of beating myself up for the wasted time. I started my business in those gap years and actually found a career that aligns with my purpose in life. Some many people out of high school just pick a major and end up doing something completely different with their lives because they didn’t take the time to figure themselves out. Ultimately I can’t beat myself up for what I didn’t know back then vs what I know now, but I’m happy to know that I am not alone in this journey. I’m truly excited! ❤️

I've been out of college for 10 years now and I completely understand what you were going through. I felt like a failure having to do college for 5 years instead of 4 because of my major and then the change of my minor junior year. I personally wish I had taken a gap year but I would probably have never met my best friend from college or literally any of my friends I made there. If I could go back I probably would do the gap year but you were right, in the south everything is on a specific timeline. I am nowhere near at 33 where 99% of my friends are now but the experiences I have had surpass anything they have experienced and I definitely don't mean that in a mean way either but its just what was on the correct path for me. Whether you're a 21 year old freshman or a 50 year old freshman, you decided whats best for you and do your timeline yourself, not for anyone else. Kudos girl, good luck at Bama!!

I was offered a rodeo scholarship for Troy AL my senior year of high school and turned it down for a guy. (I'm from Mississippi). That to this day is my biggest regret. Ended up married and divorced by 21. Are we surprised? I'm not lol. I watch all of y'all's college videos still today and wish beyond anything I had gotten the full college experience. Congrats to you for having the nerve to do it. Now as a self sufficient 25 year old I'm still trying to figure out how to balance life and just getting in a nursing program at a community college.

You have the absolute sweetest soul. I was the opposite and graduated high school at 16. Went to The University of Tennessee immediately and I was WAY out of my league. I made it through, but I definitely missed the Freshman experience because of my age (and I’m from Knoxville, so I had to live at home😞). You are thriving and I so enjoy watching your channel. Thank you so much for making this video. My gap years lasted 6 years I had a baby and I’m currently waiting to hear of admission to a university in my state. I felt those same feelings you did of missing out and I was also heartbroken when I found out I wasn’t gonna be able to afford college when I first graduated in 2014... I got accepted into Texas A&M Corpus Christi as a senior in high school but later found out I wasn’t gonna be able to afford it . I literally cried for days and was so depressed girl.. I went down the wrong path and started working as a medical assistant. It wasn’t what I originally wanted to do ever I hate it and I want to follow my dreams again .. and up until recently I discovered that I am finally ready to go back and get my degree because of my 3yr old . Your story is so inspirational I honestly thought I was the only one who went through this cause I feel so alone but thanks for sharing your story ! 😊

Same here girl. Well I got accepted into all of the colleges that I applied to and I told myself if I got into my dream college ( Texas State University) I would definitely go. I live in Houston and TxSU is in San Macros and even though I was accepted I didn’t go because I was afraid of starting over so I decided that I would go to my least favorite choice because it was in my hometown and I regret it. At first my plan was to take a year off to “ save up for college” and I worked at a retail store which I hated and one year off turned into two years. I was so miserable and I felt like a failure because I was wasting my potential so this year I enrolled in classes and now I am about to be a 21 year old freshman. Even tho I think it sucks to be a “old” freshman but I don’t regret taking a break because I got to see what the real world is like for non college graduate and it showed me how important and beneficial having a degree is

same here. i have been going to my community college on and off for 6 years. i didn't have the option to go away to a university because my parents couldnt afford it. so i just would take a couple classes here and there. i got a retail job and put off school for awhile. i finally realised i dont want to work there the rest of my life so im finally taking it seriously. i will graduate with an associate degree at 26 and be a university freshman at age 27. age is just a number though. we can do it! good luck with your studies!

This video is touching in so many ways. I graduated high school in 2015 and decided to go to work full time and take a few classes at my local county college instead of going away to a four year university. I knew I wanted to continuing my education but had I also had to focus on working in order to afford it. It took me three years to finish community college and I was so excited to transfer to a four year college. I chose to commute to school in order to save money but I soon realized how hard it was to come into a school as a transfer/upper class-men, not knowing practically anyone, and feeling so much older then everyone else. This past spring semester I decided to go out for a sorority as a way to meet people and make friends. At first I was nervous because I was so much older then everyone but when I hear stories from other people, like yourself, who did not follow the traditional college plan and is starting their journey in their 20s makes me feel like I am not alone. And it reminds me that everyone's journey has different timelines and routes and that it doesn't make us anything less. Thank you

I graduated in 2017 as well and am turning 21 pretty soon. I took a semester off of school then moved about 2 hours away from home and started at a community college part-time. I went part-time for 3 semesters and am taking another semester off. All my friends here are in school full time and honestly I feel the same way you felt when you didn’t go off to college right away and it makes me feel SO much less alone hearing you’re starting college now. When I go back to school I’ll be in between my freshman and sophomore years

Your story is definitely one of triumph and perseverance and you have every right to be proud of your gap years! You have so much to show for them, and there's no wrong way to do college. I started at 19 and graduated with a chemistry degree at 26 (a whole 7 years!). I worked nearly full time to pay for school as I went, and had a cluster of health and family challenges that set me back some as well. My program even had a woman in her 50s in the same classes as her son! After graduation, the only thing employers care about is whether you graduated lol. Not how long it took you to get there, or how long it took you to finish. And you never know what serendipity might bring - if I had graduated on time with my undergrad class I never would have met my husband! Whatever happens, seeing how you turned a setback into an opportunity shows so much character I'm sure you will be able to handle anything that crosses your path!

Now, being 33 looking back on going to college straight out of high school I often wish I would have taken time to really figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Thanks for sharing your experience. I also took a few gap years for several reasons. I went to college as a 22 year old freshman because I wasn’t 100% sure what I wanted to study after graduating high school and couldn’t get student loans on my own. I don’t regret spending my gap years getting some work experience under my belt and really enjoyed college once I got to go. I ended up getting married and having 2 kids while getting my degree, but I’m so glad I was able to accomplish everything I wanted to. The experiences you had during your gap years sound amazing. I’m sorry that you felt you were missing out, but I’m so glad you’ve been able to have the college experience you’ve always wanted. I didn’t want to take a gap year. My senior year I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. By graduation, I finished treatment and was better, but I needed a little bit before going straight into college. So I decided that I was going to start in Spring to give myself some time to get healthier. I applied for KSU but got rejected because I couldn’t finish foreign language senior year. Then I got a really good job, so I decided to move to online classes so I could do both. But that December, I relapsed. So both the job and college had to be put off. I was hoping to be able to go in Fall, but I had so many complications from the bone marrow transplant that I had to push it off to Spring Semester. This was my first semester and I love it! I don’t really go to a normal college, I go to really small satellite campus, which was nice, and I was actually in the younger side in some of my classes because the type of campus it is. I’m glad that I did that, not like it was too much of a choice, but it really has helped me get used to college. I am sad I’m not able to have like the “freshman experience”, but I will be moving campuses next fall and I’m excited for a real college experience.

I had to take a year for myself because of an illness that kept me out of education and I went to university at the age of 19 while all of my friends were at uni starting 18. They were all ahead in their life. I hated being behind, but when I got to university, I found out that there were actually more older people in my course than there were people of the age of 18. I'm going to be 21 starting my freshman year in college next fall. The biggest reason why I chose not to go this year was because how the virus was going to change everything. After I graduated HS in 2019 I didn’t want to go straight to college I didn’t want to spend 2 months of being “school free” just to go right back to school after just graduating from being in school for 12 years & it took a min to realize that what I decided to do was completely okay. The gap year(s) I took was a breath of fresh air for me that was my time to sit down figure out what I wanted my career to be & also save some money so when I do start college Spring 2022 I can at least have some what of enough money saved up so I wouldn’t have to work for at least my freshman year when I do go back. At first I was hesitant bc I didn’t want to be 20-21 years old living in a dorm with other girls way younger than me or starting school at that age but I realized that it was okay. Now I’m going back to school to get my bachelors in Kinesiology so I can become a PA.

It is never late to start something. What matters is that you are sure now about your life goal. I think it is better to wait and be sure than to waste time and money in college for a future you don’t want to pursue. I did go straight to university after high school and I wish I went to a community college for my associates degree cause it would be cheaper and easier. But I did have a goal and path I wanted to pursue. So it worked out well in the end.

I want to share my story, because I relate. I had a lot of stuff that happened in high school, but I was determined to go to college. I was unable to get my financial aid figured out but I attended classes (I was doing community college to save money) because I was hoping it would fix itself. I then had to drop out, because I had overdone it and my financial aid never worked out. After that I just continued to work and my parents divorced so life got even more stressful. I then met my husband and we were married 6 months later. He was in college already so I let him finish his degree. In 2013 four years after I graduated I started school again. I started at community college again I thought I would be a nurse, but that didn't work out so after 3 years I got a general ed associates, and then I started at a university... after 3 years there I felt like I was treading water and I was unhappy. Now at 28 and on my 4th college I working on my middle school teaching degree and I will be graduating right after my 30th birthday. I never got the standard college experience but it is all working out as it was meant to be. I understand the FOMO.
