Every thing you said is so true. I realized rapidly, that if you are looking at just price, gardening is not worth it but I find I love seeing things grow, Numerous times when I needed a pepper or onions, I could just walk out to garden. That is were the joy is at. I am now canning my tomato juice and sauce, pickles, and beans.
I am a second year gardener growing in 180 sq. ft. I harvested over 600 pounds of food this year. I am making all my own compost and produced over 1200 pounds this season using a Hotbin. Yes, infrastructure was pricey initially but with my compost bin and vermicompost bin I should be pretty self sustainable from here on in. Started seed saving this year, canning, preserving etc. 🤞
Well Debbie Downer, you are a very attractive woman and stuff, And I enjoy watching you, but you are a bit depressing … I agree with a LOT of what you said here, but IF people go in with the right mindset gardening is AMAZING and IF you do it with the right mind set and expectations it’s AMAZING!!!! I just don’t try to depend on it, but IT IS MY favorite hobby, next to fishing…. And is the same level of anxiety and stress!! I am PROUD of the veggies I grow, and my friends, family, and neighbors are always impressed AND appreciative!!!
Truthful video... I'm in my third year of backyard gardening for a retirement hobby. I've just planted a few root vegetables and spinach. I'm in Southeast Louisiana and currently caring for a dozen Monarch caterpillars on my Milkweed plants.
Everything you said in this video is so true. I was going to give up, because I am battling to get seeds to germinate. Do you have any video on germinating seeds. You have inspired me not to give up 🙏🤗❤ thank you so much. Anthony from South Africa Western Cape
Wow this is such a nice message, thank you! I don't have a video now (plan to make it during my spring in March) but my website has a REALLY comprehensive article on it if you go to it www.urbangardeningcanada.com and in the search bar type in 'comprehensive', otherwise this is the link! www.urbangardeningcanada.com/how-to-grow-from-seed-a-comprehensive-guide/ Don't give up, you can do it! Let me know if you have any questions and I can help!
lol, the key is to learn how to build your soil and work with nature. it does take time. it is not easy. but then again, nothing worth doing is easy. the good news is that you learn and grow close to nature. mind you, i have been at it for over 4 decades. making mistakes is not the problem. not learning from those mistakes is. as for the expense, that is a matter of choice. i have lived on less than $10/yr for the past 20yrs. another key to easier gardening is extensive use of perennials. i also grow many varieties of beans and some ancient grains.
metal raises beds are only a few hundred dollars for 12'x4' metal. about $200. not cheap especially to fill with soil. but they last whereas wooden ones rot after a few years. even if you plant directly in the ground there's a lot of time and money needs put into tilling and amending the soil so it's not really any cheaper than raised beds unless you're lucky to live on a plot that already has perfect agricultural soil
Intresting thoughts I totally vibe with what your saying and trying to dispel common myths and incorrect thinking!...my approach to the downsides is, find a healthy balance that works for you and expect some failure! While accepting those nagging problems as a learning experience to solve and conquer the following season. Be creative light hearted and operate with no expectations and Hope's!
Haha! I think the "operate with no expectations" is where it gets hard for me and many people. That pre-garden fantasy season sets up so many expectations! But it's definitely a journey to get to the point of taking any win
