Wait if bringing in a stranger's child is seen as incredibly dishonorable and unnatural, that would make Sojiro one of the most rebellious characters in the game yeah? Not only does he take in Joker after he became unwanted by his parents, he saved Futaba from this same foster system. Just makes me love coffee dad even more

Yeah, I could very easily see that happening when creepo uncle finally defaulted on his loans. Although, I can't really speak about whether Futaba's situation would be viewed the same way considering there are numerous differences.

Sojiro did say that Joker reminded him of himself when he was younger, so I can definitely see that. He probably ended up trying to conform to societal standards at first, maybe to keep Futaba under the radar and to not stand out as much, but after being around Joker a lot more he begins to return back to how he was and also become just as rebellious, even to the point of swearing to keep the Phantom Thieves a secret even when he learns of their identities. He truly is the best foster dad

See. The game is still pretty impactful without some of the niche cultural context. But this? I. I mean. I love coffee dad. Don't get me wrong. But this. Wow. I thought his thing with futabas mother had opened my eyes to his story, why he acts in certain ways. This. Did so. On an exponential level. Damn Sojiro. Or. Sakura-San. You're one awesome mofo

I think it's so interesting that Futaba and Haru (the two people with the most right to absolutely loathe Akechi for what he's done to them on a very personal level) also happen to be the most cooperative, mature and understanding in their willingness to work with him when Joker and Akechi choose to team up in the third semester. Yeah neither of them forgive him, and that's probably for the best, but they're still putting their differences aside. There's also this Mementos dialogue where Akechi grumbles about how everyone should be in their best shape for what's to come and therefore should avoid getting sick, and Haru goes on tell him to take care of himself, too. It's a small, ultimately inconsequential but interesting and genuinely sweet detail that gives me a little bit of hope.
@vixeneris2307

Yeah, Futaba is a great navigator and still monitors Akechi's status in the third semester despite knowing what he did. I love Haru with all of my heart, but damn did she scare me in the scene where the rest of the Thieves confirm with her and Futaba that I'll be okay to work with Akechi. She wouldn't hesitate to "cut him down" if he betrayed them again. I absolutely think that Haru would've killed him if he tried to betray the group again. Although I would've liked more interaction with the three characters. Neither wanted to forgive or be forgiven, but the dynamic would've been interesting nonetheless.

@JAMS Dream And adding onto Futaba... Akechi may have done the killing blow to Wakaba, but he wasn't the one to do the "killing blow" (i.e. the emotional/mental trauma) to Futaba. Both parties are unforgivable of course, but at least Akechi's making the effort to atone (even if he's not seeking forgiveness), wheras the adults who lied to Futaba never will.
@djjin5768
@djjin5768 2 года назад
@@izzy1356 I can understand Haru having the bigger reason to bear a grudge towards Akechi, but Futaba? She is just not the type to be doing that, at least, continously, to the point where it consumes her whole life. Not to mention, Akechi did the killing, but we have no idea, how exactly that happened. Considering how manipulative Shido is and how much he emotionally gaslit young Akechi into this role of a hitman, who knows, how he presented Wakaba on a silver platter to him to make him do the killing without even realizing, he killed someone at all. He may have played it up as a game for him to play and he naively bought into it, not understand anything at first. Shido may even keep her death a secret from him, so that he can continue manipulating Akechi into killing more people he doesn't like, without even letting him know, they actually died. But once Goro caught on to what is actually happening... he got consumed by so much guilt and self-hatred, he felt as though, he was far beyond redemption at this point, having killed other fellow human beings, but his delusions about wanting to be a hero still persisted and he uses that as a defence mechanism (Robin Hood is his delusional half), so that he can slightly feel proud of himself for not being an "irredeemable piece of societal trash", feeding into the idea: Nobody will ever forgive or understand his reasoning, because nobody is interested. It just shows how truly evil Shido is, it just gets highlighted the most in such instances. And again, he did the killing, but it wasn't him to write that vindictive note about "Futaba having killed her mother", that was Shido himself. So yeah, Futaba has the LEAST amount of reason to never forgive or understand Akechi.

There's a theory going around that Wakaba's cognitive research involves her experimenting on Akechi. This ties to what Shido said about "It was thanks to me that Akechi was able to properly use his power to begin with". I think that Akechi was able to obtain the Call of Chaos ability after being experimented on for cognitive psience. After obtaining that new ability, Shido must've ordered Akechi to use his new ability against Wakaba and kill her. This theory is brought up because of the Featherman Seeker game in P5R. If you make Joker buy and play the Featherman Seeker game all the way through, you'll notice how the story in that Featherman game connects to Akechi. Grey Pigeon in that game represents Akechi obviously because Akechi's Featherman DLC outfit is Grey Pigeon. And Grey Pigeon was experimented on by a scientist. Grey Pigeon was also put to the test in a simulation (Which could symbolize the Metaverse). I'm not great at explaining things but I believe that this is something worth looking into. If you plan to do NG+ in P5R, you should consider buying that Featherman Seeker game during the Futaba palace arc. Yeah about the "Our Light" song that plays during the end credits of P5 Royal... the lyrics of that song represents how Joker feels about Akechi and how he will move on from his grief of losing him. I know, that made me cry too and made me ship them harder 😭😭😭
@LadyVirgilia
@LadyVirgilia 4 года назад
Oh myy I actually love this theory...?! Since Yaldabaoth basically "gifted" Akechi his powers, it's easy to assume that something as abnormal as Call of Chaos could have just been an add-on from him. But considering that Wakaba was the foremost cog-psi researcher at the time (and must have had some distortion in order for Akechi to kill her shadow), her closing in on some way of utilizing less scrupulous tactics wouldn't be too far of a stretch... Oh and yes I've played the Featherman Seeker game! (Actually, is it just me, or is there wayyy more extra time to 100% P5R compared to the vanilla P5 lol) I can't believe I never put two-and-two together...I can totally see Grey Pigeon symbolizing Akechi. Thanks for enlightening me! Damn...with both of these things in mind...poor Goro. His low luck stat makes even MORE sense now...certainly not everything is tied to fate, thoughhh it sure likes to screw with him a lot. The ship feels are REAL. Thank you for this super thoughtful comment!

@@LadyVirgilia No problem! 😊 There is actually a Tumblr post that explains this theory and one of the things they said made it more clear to me that Wabaka must have experimented on Akechi. For instance, the scientist's name in Featherman Seeker is Osagiri. The kanji for Osagiri alludes to the kanji for Wakaba. I also theorize that Akechi was probably a homeless teen for some time before Yaldabaoth gave him persona powers. As you mentioned in the video in regards to child institutions, when children leave the institution, many of them end up in the bottom rung of society and become homeless. Children in Japan usually get out of those childcare institutions between the ages of 15 - 18. Akechi was around 15 when he obtained persona powers and started working for Shido, and 15 is in that range of getting out of those child institutions. Yaldaboath must have seen this miserable homeless teen and decided to chose him. I also remembered seeing a post a long time ago that says that Akechi talks about a 24 hour convenience store that he used to go to, but I can't seem to find that post anymore... :/ 24-hour stores are places that homeless teens usually go to for shelter.

Not necessary for her to have a distortion, just have a shadow. Although, given her research, it wouldn't be unusual to have a place simply because she would know how to create and nurture one. So it is possible she had, in the line of her research, made her own palace to experiment with. With Akechi as her assistant to help her hone techniques

Jacob Freeman Is Wakaba somehow had a self made Palace then if Akechi did kill Wakaba then she would’ve just been dead. Wakaba had a mental shutdown so that means she needed to have a shadow and that shadow would’ve had to die. Wakaba was probably a good person but like Futaba, and Maruki they could both have a palace while still being good people.

the fact that Hereward is a fusion of Robin Hood and Loki is a pretty big in-universe hint that in the 3rd semester he is reconciling his forgotten desire to be a hero in society's standards(Robin Hood) and his own sense of justice which might as well be self righteousness (Loki) not to mention that he doesn't wish for the alternate reality because it's one where he is not accountable for his actions again fitting into the justice

Fun Fact: Akechi saying that he wants to “take Joker out” in his rank 5 is, in the English translation, supposed to be read as either going out to different places together or, of course, literally taking Joker out by murdering him. However, in the Spanish translation, Akechi’s wording is exclusively romantic and read as him practicing diligently to be able to take Joker out in a date. (I’m not joking I initially heard this online but had a lot of my Spanish-speaking friends translate it and how it reads in English. I know it’s not an official translation by any means, but I just thought it was cute and kinda funny.)

What drew me to Akechi was his darkness (and good looks and intelligence). Akechi is an abuse victim, among many things. I don't often see that in media. Or rather, I don't often get to see the painful effects of it on the victim. As a victim myself, I felt seen for the first time, tbh. I do my best but my scars flare up, sometimes often, and I get... very Not Nice. I do my best to mitigate that, but it's only thanks to my parent's support and then later as an adult the support of friends that I am able to deal with and continue to deal with the fallout. Akechi had no one. So I legit understand his hot-cold, his lashing out, his pure rage at a society that not only let his abuse happen but BLAMES HIM for it when all he did was EXIST. It hurts. A lot. When you're in that situation. And I feel the reason why he's so divisive is because, to a Western audience, he is shoving in their face the consequences of their actions. Of people casually abusing and bullying others, and people don't like being shown this. It causes cognitive dissonance because they're "a good person" even though they know deep inside they may not be so good either by participating in bullying/harassment/abuse of others in the past, or being passive about it. So they project their hate on Akechi. And that speaks VOLUMES about our society. Which is both hilarious and sickening, especially with the MeToo movement and the very loud screeches on social media not to victim blame rape and sexual assault survivors... but only the women of course. And only when the purportraitor is male. Because something something a narrative. Sorry this is a mess.
@dragonwolftmaer5
@dragonwolftmaer5 4 года назад
My condolenses for what you went through, but I’m glad people were there for you, keep beong strong. It is true that media rarely shows victims or other things in great ways. Having a physical disability I’ve become aware od how media paints things. And you’re right about victim blaming, eapecially with make rape victims. I saw one thing once where a person said “guys can’t be raped because they have ti get hard first” and I did a double take because I was like “that’s... easuer than you think...” but getting into Akechi I lost my older brother at 12 from an illness and my girlfriend lost her mother at 18 from suicide. It impacted us greatly, and Akechi likely lost his mother younger than that. The one person in his life got depressed and killed herself and he was thrown into chaos with no support. Akechi is clear that he’s an accident no one wanted. So many people are so quick to claom “he should have gotten help” but victims, especially male victims, are often ignored or know where to turn. I barely suffered any abuse (a bit of verbal abuse/bullying from my stepdad and maybe some stuff about my disability) but even I struggled to know what to say to someone or who to ask. My girlfriend went through a lot more in her life and when we talk about it she agreed. There’s also fear of being ignored or reprecussions from the abuser if you say something. A lot of people are quick to use the term Psychopath or Sociopath to describe Akechi, but I think there’s an issue of representation again. Media portrays psychopathy as a murderous person, but this is not entirely accurate. I don’t have a background in psychology, but I do find the subject interesting. So the things I say are based on what research I’ve done and my instinct as an author to analyze characters. Both those terms though fall under a larger personality disorder called Antisocial Personality Disorder. Which has a lot to do with disregard for others, inflated self-image, lying in the attemt to use others, lack of remorse for actions, and other things. When reading up on it I saw more signs that possibly linked Shido to that disorder, which is significant. Akechi doesn’t have an ego, he PRETENDS to. He does show remorse even if he doesn’t ask for forgiveness and while he lies it is to gain the approval of others. While looking around I saw a disorder called Borderline Personality Disorder which haa symptoms like low self-worth, unstable fluctuating relationships (ASPD talks about shallow relationsgips, but looking at his interactions with Joker it’s not shallow, he only pushes away out of fear) and bursts of rage. Genetica have a great impact on mental health. A person in the exact same situation with different parents may reaxct different. I think this is one thing a lot of people overlook. So if we argue that Shido as ASPD then Akechi, by being Shido’s son, is more at risk of having a personality disorder like BPD. Then his situation has to be taken into account. And the fact that he did get magic powers from a false god who literally singaled him out as an agent of chaos like “hey, you’re hurt and angry, here take this literal chaos and go take revemge”. One of the biggest issues I’ve seen with victims is that not only do they silently blame themselves, but often they’re blamed and shames for being victims. Or if they are they’re treated as poor people instead of as they are. His relationship with Joker is thus an extremely important one. Not only that, but he wanted to be accepted and aknowledged even by Shido. Not just another voice that was never heard. He wanted to rise up from being a burden and an accidrntbto someone who mattered. He justifies his kills by saying he is doing what they were. He killed because they were doing bad things. This is a bit muddled with Joker and maybe Wakaba, but I think even that is a part of who he is. Joker got close to him. He values Joker and opens up to him. But he’s also scared Joker will find out how messed up he is. He’s afraid of being abandoned and forgotten and Joker threatens that in multiple ways so he acts out against that. His slow breakdown during his boss fight as he gets more and more desperate untol he finally relents and is confused by the PTs still offering him a hand is something he never say. Failure was never an option until them. Joker gave him the best support he ever had. That’s why in the 3rd semester he doesn’t have to hide a part of himself. Joker and the thieves have seen his worst and weakest, but still aren’t throwing him away so he feels safe. Some hsve also pointed to how his 3rd awakening happens at LeBlanc while the others happen in their rooms (romantically or not) Akechi’s home amd heart are where Joker is because Joker is the support he never had. He even notes if they met earlier things would have been different. Had he had the support of Joker he may not have turned to such extremes, but he didn’t. But now that he does. He doesn’t care for his own life (devaluing himself even as a barganing chip and berating Joker for even thinking his possible death is worth risking the lack of freedom) and he knows he is a messed up person and deserves punishment, but that he chooses that path. He’s lived his life being a puppet to Shido and Yaldeboath, but now he can xhooze even if it means life imprisonment or death. In fact, another thing that is often missrepresented is suicide. People see it as giving up or being too weak, but often the victim sees it as sn escape. A way to choose and a way to escale pain. Akechi is willing to die so he won’t be controlled. Akechi is a victim dealt a bad hand before he was even born and was pushed around. Villifying him only tells victims they don’t matter. Should he have tirned to being the way he is, no, but an issue is the cycle of abuse. A lot of victims become the abusers because it makes them feel strong amd/or no one told them a better way. If you’re a boy and your father hit your mother when you wrre mad you might pick that up if no one helped you learn thst you shouldn’t. Many bullies are that way because they’re jealous someone is “better” than them. Shido admits he manipulated Akechi with praise. Akechi kilks somsone, he gets praise and acknowledgement. So how does he get more? Kill another person. He doesn’t just kill people willy nilly, but it’s a way for him to be seen and accepted. He continues a cycle of abuse because until Joker no one said “there’s a better way” and he couldn’t find help. Another issue is gender. Men are often told to not show emotion and be tough. So him seeking help and breaking down would have seemed “girly and unfit for a guy.” And this wrong. Sorry for that huge rant. I wrote this before watching the video so who knows what will be adressed, but what you said hit home to me in very specific ways. And I hoope through my writing I can help shed light and better portray things like disability, abuse, mental illness and such in ways that help subvert the common tropes and allows those who feel alienated find a place they can belong and that their voices are heard and appreciated.

@@dragonwolftmaer5 That "men can't be raped because they have to get hard first" is not only completely insensitive but also completely biologically inaccurate. The body will respond to stimulation the way it was designed to, that's just how it works. @@jillreyerma7592 Oh absolutely! It frustrates me when people try to argue their missconceptions as fact. A body can’t determine “good” or “bad” touch. It just knows it’s stimulated. It really doesn’t take a lot to look things up, but people either just take what others say or do a bare minimum of information then claim they know then get angry when someone tries to teach them better. It’s a similar thing with disability or mental illness. I see a lot of people spread and perpetuate stereotypes (the internet and media doesn’t help) I see a lot of people say Akechi is a psychopath or sociopath, and I can see why, but looking into it more I think the symptoms apply more to Shido (actually making Goro more suseptible to mental illness) but I think (based on my admittedly limited understanding of mental disorders) his symptoms seem more akin to Borderline Personality Disorder. But yeah, I agree. So many people have limited to no info and yet want to try to give what they have as fact and even if they are proven wrong by actual scientific fact and try to brush it off rather than learn. And really that argument is simply a way to denean male rape victims especially those who are raped by women for not being “tough enough” which is utter bull.
@jillreyerma7592
@jillreyerma7592 3 года назад
@@dragonwolftmaer5 Oh yeah, I've always thought that Shido fit the psychopathy bill pretty well. Way more than Akechi. Though Akechi does show some of the symptoms, he is not a Psychopath in my personal opinion. Psychopaths are considered to have a very severe form of Antisocial Personality Disorder, and Akechi's matching symptoms certainly aren't that bad. Though, he *may* have ASPD because it has a strong genetic component to it. He could be diagnosed too, since you have to be 18 for an ASPD diagnosis. Another thing concerning ASPD is that both it and BPD are in the same group of disorders (personality) and have been known to coexist in some people. I also agree with your theory on BPD. Though I will also say that I have no formal education in Psychology and nor will I pretend that I know everything about it (unlike some people). But I have done research on the topic on websites made by medical institutions, so I'm fairly confident in the things I do know. I did just check again though to make sure I at least partially know what I'm talking about. BPD is said to carry with it a fear of abandonment to start with, this has quite an obvious connection to Akechi so its probably unnecessary to go into too much depth on this one. But I will say that the fear of abandonment could be on display when he shows a clear hesitation in becoming close with people. He repeatedly shouts that he doesn't need teammates or friends. I kind of interpret this as Akechi being defensive because he fears abandonment and may be afraid that everyone will just leave him in the end because, in his eyes, he is truly worthless (self esteem issues are a part of it as well and it is quite plain that Akechi has them). Secondly, the person can be quite emotionally unstable. Again, quite obvious. They have periods of intense negative emotions such as rage and sorrow, plus they often have long term feelings of emptiness and loneliness as well as sometimes becoming suicidal. These can be seen in Akechi a lot after revealing his true nature (that scene is quite telling in general in my opinion) he appears to bounce between pure, unfettered anger that is displayed as being difficult to control (another sign of BPD) and a sudden melancholy. In addition, Akechi shows a sense of loneliness in the way he talks "I was very particular about my appearance, my grades, my public image, so someone would want me around!" could be used as an example of this, and I will come back to that quote to back up something else in a second. He is also quite empty in general given that his whole life revolves around pleasing people and exacting revenge upon the father that abandoned him then left him and his mother to rot. In talking about people pleasing, we segue into the next part. Here we bring up the quote again: "I was very particular about my appearance, my grades, my public image, *so someone would want me around!*". Another symptom of BPD is a lack of a sense of identity and this sense of who you are *may change significantly depending on who you are with* which does indeed fit Akechi adopting personas (no pun intended but maybe pun intended) in order to please people. BPD affected people also find it hard to build and keep relationships, which Akechi probably did, thus changing his personality to fit what he thought people wanted. This would have contributed to the sense of loneliness and probably brought that hollowed out, empty sensation I mentioned before- like he's not truly himself (which he is not for most of the game). Expanding on this further, as I previously mentioned- Akechi has self esteem issues and a fear of abandonment. As such, he would desire attention. This is why Akechi reacts the way he does when cognitive Akechi says "Don't tell me, were you feeling good about having someone rely on you for once?" It's evident that Akechi likes being praised, both here and when Shido mentions in his pre boss battle speech that he "controlled him by merely offering praise". People with BPD often seek validation, a way to prove that their negative thoughts about themselves are untrue and to boost their self esteem. Akechi does seem to overcompensate when it comes to self esteem, talking about how great his powers and talents are. But, if you listen to the way he says it and his phrasing, it sounds more like he's trying to convince himself than anybody else. Also, paranoia is frequently seen in people with BPD. It could well be paranoia that people could betray you at any time, or that you are utterly convinced of something that you really have no logical basis for. There isn't as much evidence for this one, but he does seem pretty paranoid about what people think of him and clearly cares deeply about it. This fear of abandonment could have also lead to paranoia concerning that as well. There could be more, but this comment is very long as it is and you're probably tired of my rambling by now. Thank you, if you read it all though.

@@jillreyerma7592 oh no, I love these kinds of analysis and like to continue them. It’s great fun and I find great interest in discussing with people. Like you I also have limited knowledge, but try to base it on medical sites and varify between them. I have taken a bit of psych, but don’t claim to be an expert. I read in one site that people can exibit symptoms from other disorders so if we go on the notion of him having BPD then j showing a few signs of ASPD is understandable. One big thing for me is that people with ASPD have no care for people and a high self-esteem which Akechi has neither, it’s very opposite. Akechi is very afraid and used to being thrown away. Someone in a comment said that you can’t analyze his “Detective Prince” guise to see Akechi, but you MUST because it is impoerant. He was upset when he didn’t feel like he belonged at LeBlanc because he brought up Sae and Wakaba. He thinks that if the public knew he was a “bastard child” they wouldn’t listen to him. Sae is important too. Say what you will about the anime, but one of the best lines they added to me is when Makoto says “my sister trusted you” and he replies “she trusted me?” The fact she valued him was a shock to him brcause he honestly has no sense of self-worth. Joker is his first friend. Ship them or not he “loves” Joker in onr way or another. He’s the first person he was able to be “him” with and not feel like he would be judged. I think it’s significant his “last words” to Joker were “This is where YOUR justice ends”. That was something they had deep talks about. Akechi is Justice. So saying that he is acknowledgimg the bond meant something. It wasn’t a means to an end and it scared him, but he wanted to be his friend. I think another evidence of his self-esteem is his plan literally hinges on him being a “shame”. Someome who thinks they’re better than otjers wouldn’r make a plan to go “hey you know that woman you fucked... yeah I’m her son so I’m a mistake and that will ruin you”. Yup, it’s why I think the Detective Prince is a PART of him. You can’t make things from nothing. He has that in him as much as his bitter Third Semester anger. He gets angry when they try to talk him down. He wanted attemtion and love he was starved for, but also railed against how fake his fans were. How simply they went between him and the Phantom Thieves. How they were never able to see him for him, hence again: Joker. He structured his life so he could get the acceptanve amd that’s why he gets so mad at Joker. Joker was “criminal trash” and yet he was able to have friends and find acceptance. During Rank 8 in Royal Akechi says “sk you’ve caught up to me here too” of course that’s a hint, but also significant. Joker is catching up to Akechi in the metaverse when Akechi has been at it for 2 years more and it makes him hurt. I think the pun is important even if unintentional because he has TWO. I don’t take Robin Hood as his “lies” as much as his “justice” Robin is a superhero and he uses ray guns. This a direct reference to his past wanting to be a hero of justice. You can see it too when theu first meet up with Sumi he automatically drops back into his polite form of speech even if at this point he’s not that person. Yes, he wants people to accept him. As much as he HATES Shido he really wants him to say how important he is. His shock that the PTs are able to accept him despite killing two of their parents and nearly killing Joker is a shock to him and his third semester coldness to them may be a result of that. He expects Haru and Futaba to hate him and that he’s not a PT. He is jealous Joker has that and he wants to know he’s important and not just trash. Which is why Sae trusting him is a shock. Even if it may have been obvious he didn’t see it. He is extremely focused and projecting onto Joker because of that. I actually think he had two motives in Sae’s palace. Sure it was to catch Joker red-handed, but I think he actually valued Sae and knew she was currupted and knew if she got too close he may have to kill her, and he didn’t want that. I have little basis for this, but I believe it makes sense. Sae is one of the few people he trusts. He felt betrayed that she was twisted. Some people also think his third senester proves how “bad” he is, but he’s ruthless and blunt, yet he is far from heartless to PEOPLE. I’m sure if he felt he HAD to he would, but Akechi takes no joy in ending life. It’s just his “job” (Shadows are different of course) you could argue his smile when shooting Joker, but a lot of people smile or laugh at tough things because it’s a response. Not only that it makes him feel powerful. He feels like he is in control. He’s not a “puppet”. That’s also why he despises the fake reality. He doesn’t want to be “controlled” even if it’s to make him happy. Even if his (worthless in his eyes) life will end he refuses to be forced. I actually noticed too that the fake reality harkens back to his comment about the PT in the beginning that “changing a person’s cognition is fundimentslly wrong”. You could argue that’s him getting support because of his Detective Prince aspect, but add that to Third Semester where he is visibly upset at the idea of changing people and you can tell that isn’t wholy an act. But in that semester Joker has seen his worst so he’s not hiding. He trusts Joker to literally and figuratively have his back because Joker shows him that validation and acceptance. Joker values him. Peopke complain he shows no remorse and I disagree. It’s not that he doesn’t, but that he doesm’t expect forgiveness. He’s not looking to be pitied but to be accepted. Another thing about that and him wanting to kill: if he cared nothing for killing he wouldn’t be so fast to justify. Even to Shido who doesn’t give two flips he says “they were criminals anyway” that’s justification at it’s finest. Someone who didnmt care would have no reservations. I want to also add that I think Joker and Akechi’s bobd is very significant. Joker doesn’t just agree because he’s the detective prince or just shut him up. He’s willing to disagree while maintaining a civil tone and keep up the debate. He is able to have these big chats with Joker and he’s okay to be with him. Joker is perseptive which impresses him. It’s true that Joker and Akechi don’t traditionally help each other in their confidant, but I think Joker does help Akechi. He gives him someone to be open with. He is able to be himself with Joker and it scares him. He regrets not meeting Joker because Joker is the ome person he could really bond with. I think it’s significant in Third Senester that he approaches Joker about the fake reality. He TRUSTS Joker and knows they’re stronger together instead of storming the palace all by himself which before he would have. He values and cares for Joker because Joker helped him learn to trust. And while he violently tore that apart by shooting (cognative) Joker he still found someone to help him and validate him. Joker goves him what he wanted, love and acceptance, for not only his righteous Robin Hood side, but also his harsh blunt Loki side as well. Now I’m rambling, but as I said I think the topic is interesting and I really enjoy talking about it. I love analyzing characters and I think he is very interesting. So I’m not tired of it at all. Really, I love talks like this and love the ability to have and continue them over RU-vid or whatever.

Indeed, your Akechi bias is showing and I love it. Learning Japanese myself, I was taken aback by how subtly different the English and Japanese texts are. Knowing about the culture now, the Japanese writing struck much more of a chord with me and helped me understand the intentions that Atlus was going for with his character. I'm not an expert by any means, but I feel like I understand him more the more I learn. I'm so glad someone else caught the fact that he shakes hands with Joker in Royal - it's a brilliant touch that he doesn't bow; to show his world-weariness and I want to say that's also a hint to his true character (disliking Japanese society or, at the very least, the societal expectations that he grew up with).

Akechi; he was passed around from foster home to foster home, which would certainly leave a kid with feelings of worthlessness for never having a stable home. He already considers himself worthless for his mother's untimely death, but he also never had a stable support system. It's not like Futaba who eventually found a forever home with Sojiro; Akechi never got that happily ever after. He never got to be a kid. He endured the lofty expectations thrown onto him as the prodigious, detective prince, and just barely out of high-school is being expected to help with some very serious subject matters, that even most professional detectives would need a bit of time to recover from, I'd imagine. And its only after entering high-school 2 years prior to the beginning of P5/P5R, that Shido comes back into his life, and what happens? Akechi's enlisted by his estranged excuse of a father--not to reconnect for more than a decade of lost time and loneliness--but to become a hitman. He's told to kill Futaba and Haru's parents, Principal Kobyakawa, the engineer in the prologue, and probably dozens of other people over 2 years. No therapy, no support systems, no stability with friends or family, all the normal stressors of our adolescent years...and no one was there to even offer a shoulder for him to lean on. The people who came into his life only ever used him for ratings, entertainment, or other agendas, like the interviewers at the tv station. Recall the auditorium at the school festival too, all of the students in there asked for Akechi to come, just because they wanted to say they'd seen the ace detective prince up close. It was for the shock factor of this celebrity coming to their school, but everyone forgets that he's at best a year or even just a few months older than Makoto or Haru. Regardless of his suave attitude, good looks, his natural talent at things like billiards or his precise dart throwing, or however many times he meets everyone's expectations, who does he have by his side when he stumbles? To be put on this pedestal, is to accept a life of solitude. He was put on a precipice, never allowed to be like his peers or have a normal life. That might be the beauty of his character, it's something that both the characters, and we the players forgot; before he's a prodigy, he's still only human. Worse yet, in Shido’s palace, Shido has Akechi's cognitive shadow confront him. Ann, and Futaba (and Haru in P5R during the new Okumura Bossfight) all encountered shadows of themselves in respective palaces. Ann and Haru had to confront how other people viewed them in vile ways, and Futaba had to confront her own demons, but with Akechi...this cognitive version of him is hardly any different than him. It's not wearing different clothes, and it's not robotic or distorted, and obviously not even a palace ruler like Futaba's was. It's. Just. Himself. Uttering the same sentiments of pity that he feels from the people around him and the Phantoms right before him. But it's wearing his face, saying it all in the timbre of his own voice, picking apart every flaw in himself, and every misfortune that's plagued him throughout his life. It's taken his pride, his name, his very image and likeness, and now it threatens to take the only thing left to his name...his life.

The absolute one thing I’ll give the automatic confidant is that Rank 8 is implied by Morgana. Morgana mentions it’s weird your bond deepened since Akechi was talking to cognitive you and not the real you (who knew Akechi was evil already anyway). So it’s implied Akechi is the one initiating this confidant and not Joker, since Akechi is also a wild card. Neat concept despite it... coming at the expense of being good. Edit 2: I was thinking about which Personas Akechi had and when for a while but I’ve come to the conclusion that he had both at the same time at all times. One for who he wanted to be, and one for who he saw himself as. Loki and Robin are st the very least not the same Persona evolved or anything since Loki can’t relearn any of Robin’s skills. Loki does seem to be marginally more powerful than Robin though. Edit 4: Final thing, this isn’t a cognition of Akechi in third semester. As stated a bunch of times, the people in the third semester are not cognitions, Maruki is altering the world itself. Joker’s wish was that he regretted not being able to fulfill his promise to Akechi and he wanted him to make it out alive. All Maruki did was change the world so that Akechi didn’t die die during Shido’s palace. Or... did he die in the first place, did Maruki think he did something when he actually didn’t touch Akechi in the first place?The game leaves that part open to interpretation. However I’m sure Akechi acts how he should in third semester, no fakes or anything. Amazing video by the way, great stuff to think about it!

My first and third edits got cut off so here’s my last things Edit: Joker also takes his glasses off during the fireworks festival showing his closeness to his team, and during both endings when he overcomes his hardships. They’re back in P5S cause P5S was like “Nah”. Edit 3: So I wanna bring up some fun facts. Akechi’s one of the few characters to not have “awakened” weapons formed from when he awakened to his Persona, the others being I believe Morgana, Joker’s Gun, and Kasumi (who I assume bought some weapons after her first awakening). The toy weapons he uses are implied to be stuff he dug up from when he was a kid, although when becoming black mask his ray guns now shoot “special bullets” (I take that to mean they kill people) and jagged evil looking swords. Akechi has 3 cut ins, his one with Robin where he looks like a P3/4 cut in because he’s very clean and pristine, the psychotic cut in when he is fighting you showing he’s losing it, and the more egotistical and disgusted cut in in the third semester, showing how much he really doesn’t care for shadows. Probably the biggest showing that Akechi’s prince act isn’t completely fake is taking him to stuff like the cathedral nets mostly the same reaction, just Akechi’s more of a dick about it. It’s not so much prince was fake and more... filtered. Finally on the subject of Akechi’s remorse, while he does feel it pretty clearly (no more what ifs is definitely about Akechi struggling with killing Joker) he doesn’t seem to have it way him down since he ultimately just wants to move forward. He’ll do what he wants, no regrets now after all these years. His turning himself in seems to just be him thinking fairs fair, since Joker fulfilled his promise and all. Oh and one last thing, Akechi does seem to actually like the Phantom Thieves despite thinking they’re kinda naive about how the world works. He thinks them not killing people and that they think people can change is stupid, but the PT themselves as people are good people and he’s thankful for their help, he says as much in some jazz club dialogue.

Wow that's something I had not considered regarding og rank 8! it would make so much sense that the entire confidant is initiated by Akechi. The rank 10 in the Jpn translation adds another layer since it's the only rank up where Joker's thought bubble says "I sense a certain bond with Akechi" instead of "I sense a solid bond with ___" for all his other confidants at max rank. Sort of affirms Joker's halfheartedness towards the relationship. And you're right about the fireworks festival! My bad for forgetting! The thing about Akechi always having Robinhood is a fair point! I've toyed with the idea that it could have even been his initial one, but he was so disillusioned the world that he began to use Loki way more. Though I personally like to abscribe more to the idea that his bond with Joker is responsible for Robin. Helps give his status as a Wild Card more substance imo since it shows how powerful that ability can be, but also how easily squandered as well, since Akechi never bothered getting close to anyone before the MC. Edit: Yes Akechi's jazz club dialogue in the 3rd semester is really cool. I do agree that he respects the PT and appreciates them, but definitely doesn't see them as friends and keeps his distance cuz it's be awkward. But because the geniality of his demeanor is removed now, it literally just comes across as him not giving them the time of day otherwise. I feel like I misspoke when I called it bad blood between him and the PT in the 3rd semester section, since he says himself that he put the feud behind him. I should have clarified that whatever negative sentiment (even though they still have sympathy for him) there may be is from the side of the PT, most likely Futaba and Haru (obviously haha) Thanks for this thoughtful comment! ^^

My thoughts about whether Akechi is alive or not... Maruki granted wishes only on people’s beliefs/cognition. There was no proof that Akechi died in Shido’s Palace, like you said, so going off of that, Joker (or the player) can only assume he is dead and wishes for him to return. It’s also possible for the player to “forget him”, causing the non true ending. There’s already a lot to think about just from that, but in my opinion, third semester Akechi is as real as ever, no matter what the circumstances were. He also is a trickster like Joker and even if he had nothing to hide in third semester I’m sure there were still things he suspected and perhaps, didn’t reveal entirely. But who knows. What’s interesting is that if you turn the brightness down in the true post credits scene, you can see Akechi’s face (and the faces of the men he is with). He’s frowning and I wonder if that is him turning himself into the police, once again. This time at his own accord. Without the interruption of Maruki’s fake reality, he is similarly following his own path just like the thieves are doing. He’s doing what he wanted to do after his “death”/December 24th and that is now atoning for his sins and turning himself in, maybe not just for Joker’s sake now, but for the other crimes he committed. What do you think? (Also “Our Light” is IMO written from Joker’s thoughts about Akechi!) I loved P5R so much!

Wow that's such a neat tidbit about Akechi's facial expression! Thank you for pointing this out. @@LadyVirgilia From what I inferred from the unused cutscene people found about Akechi, he survived out of Shido's palace. He was wounded from the fight and was too ashamed to show his face to Joker bc of all the messed up stuff he did. Instead of going to a hospital and get attention, he went to the rehab center or caretaker's house who took care of his mom when she was still alive. In his dialogue, he thanks them for taking care of him even tho he came unannounced. He then said that he will repay his debt to them in the future, but first, he has a debt to pay to someone who took care of him in Tokyo and has to leave. So that means, in the course of the 3rd semester, the real Akechi was wounded and left to go to a safe haven / (caretaker's house???), but bc of the fake reality he came back with no wounds and no recollection after he left Shido's palace. Why? His decision to leave bc of his wound would interfere with Joker's wish to see him safe and sound. In the post-credit scene, I think he just got back to Shibuya and would be looking for Joker, with the company of 2 staff who looked after him. ( haha idk its just my take on the topic)

My thoughts on akechi have always been that he needs therapy, not punishment. Yes, he did horrendous things and needs to be held responsible, but those heinous acts came from somewhere. We start to see the tragedy behind him in royal clearly, but what he needs after the game (assuming a reality where he survives) is rehabilitation. He needs to learn how to regain his humanity after he resigned himself to be the monster he was asked to be. Yes, that rehabilitation will require a separation from society until he is out back together, but simply being thrown into prison and forgotten about is doing a massive disservice to the potential he has, if it does not just force him to double down as a monster. Death is permanent and does little to fix the problems he "created".

If it helps, in one of the deleted cutscenes left on the disk, we see two (most likely placeholder) characters at a rehab center (unique background too) and overhear a “young man” mention how he must change for the sake of his promise and his mother. While this scene is incomplete and lacks voice acting (which some cut scenes do actually have), it makes the most sense for this to be Goro.

No matter your feelings on Akechi I think he makes a good representation of a consequence of being a victim of society’s abuse and neglect. We don’t know an awful lot about Akechi’s childhood but the fact alone that his mother committed suicide and he was probably just tossed straight into an orphanage gives an insight into the emotional and psychological torment he probably endured. Western audiences probably don’t understand the severity of orphans in Japan and the fact that they are treated like 2nd class citizens, along with additional emotional trauma from his mother’s death and possible abuse from various foster homes. It would be unfair to just dismiss Akechi’s actions as mere psychopathy without acknowledging his trauma. We also know that Akechi craves validation and any form of affection which demonstrates how neglected of it he’s been all his life, he even fakes a personality to receive some semblance of affection and no matter how fucked up that is it really shows the extent of trauma Akechi has gone through and what low self-esteem he has to think that he is unloveable and so has to create a personality to be loved, no matter how shallow that love is. To just paint Akechi’s actions as ‘he’s just a sociopath/psychopath’ without acknowledging his trauma makes us no different from those in his past that mistreated him. Yes, he may exhibit some signs of psychopathy and sociopathy but we don’t know much about him to say for definite. Yes, Akechi should definitely go to jail and pay for his crimes. But he also deserves the chance for rehabilitation and to have the chance to treat his trauma. Although it was scrapped I was happy that Akechi admitted himself into Rehab because he himself acknowledged that he needs help before taking any other action which is massive character growth.

This is one of the most brilliant analysis of Akechi I've seen. You've pointed out many aspects that I've missed out. I've read about how big a deal being illegitimate is in Japan compared to the Western world in TV Tropes but your analysis truly shed light on the ugliness of the stigma. The one I want to highlight are how many factors were present to push Akechi into his dark path. First is Yaldabaoth who started this mess in the first place. Next is Shido who served as Akechi's object of hate and revenge and the one who likely taught Akechi to start killing shadow selves. Third is Akechi's upbringing where he grew up experiencing the worst of humanity. From bullies in the orphanage to corrupt politicians in Shido's circle, it's no wonder Akechi became as misanthropic as he did by the time he met the Phantom Thieves. But the cruelest tragedy is the lack of Morgana in his life. Your video highlighted a point that I would have definitely overlooked (no matter what) that Morgana was the single strongest influence that separated the Phantom Thieves from the Black Mask. Indeed, if Morgana wasn't there, the Phantom Thieves might themselves have resorted to killing to protect themselves and their friends from heinous villains like Kamoshida. Akechi and Joker are truly perfect foils of each other. If Igor had chosen to send Morgana to Akechi instead of Joker, who knows? Perhaps Akechi could have surmounted his horrible circumstances. It would undoubtedly have been a darker journey than Joker's but he could have surmounted them. There but for the grace of the Velvet Room, go I. Some men fall from grace. Some are thrown.

(Spoilers) I've been thinking on this for a while. Going back to Okumura's palace, after the PT have stolen the treasure of Okumura and are fleeing the scene, Ryuji (I think?) Asks Futaba what their chances are of escaping the palace are (if I remember correctly.) Futaba says something along the lines of "next to none" and they resort to Mona to get them out of the palace. If that was the case, how was the Black Mask able to leave the palace after assassinating Okumura? He didn't have a vehicle he could rely on, and he was still behind the PT, who narrowly escaped themselves (I think). It might be possible that he can escape the palaces from any point, unlike the PT. Later on, at Shido's palace, Futaba does not confirm nor deny Akechi's death, she just says both of the readings are gone. Personally, I like to think Akechi was able to shoot the cognitive version of himself and escape the palace.

@@dededeletethis9940 Or it could just be bad writing lol. I love P5 Royal a lot, but the original P5 has it's missteps in how it juggles its many characters in accordance with the main plot and it's themes. That's especially true with everything from the time of Okumara's palace, to the plot twist of your fake death at the hands of Akechi. Seems like the writers had a hard time getting thier story where they wanted it to go during that stretch so they relied a lot on contrived explanations about not entirely clear events that occur. They try to explain it all through long dialogue and through Futaba / Mona after the twist, but it's definitely a case where the player has to suspend the plausibility of some of the events that take place during those 2-3 months for it to really work. It all "makes sense" if you buy what they tell you, but like, its a lot of deus ex machina to make it work

I was actually thinking about it... There's this fun headcanon I see in many places that dying in the metaverse =/= permanent death. That if you die in the metaverse you actually just get booted out into the real world or something. It explains Ryuji waking up alive after having an explosion blown in his face at the end of Shido's palace, and it might explain what you mentioned now. What I was thinking is that maybe by losing to the PTs and losing his resolve to destroy Shido, Akechi lost the "game". After all, were he to live, he would stop playing the "game" and turn himself in (as seen in Maruki's reality). Since he lost the "game", his life was forfeit, just like when Joker lost. Thus, even though he didn't permanently die in the metaverse, he still lost his life.

@dededeletethis9940 3 года назад
@@erachiiii the "metaverse death =/= real death" thing is interesting to think about, but i feel that it's very unlikely due to one simple thing: the tv world. The tv world is most likely just another regional manifestation of the metaverse - the collective subconscious of tokio looks the the tokio subway system because it is so important for everyone there, while the collective subconscious of inaba manifests as a world inside tvs because watching tv is the one universal form of entertainment out there (i guess). And as we know, if you die in the tv, your dead body will be spat back out. So, i feel like the p5 metaverse would operate by similar rules. Ryuji surviving can be explained simply by the fact that he has the most defense of the party, he has survived worse attacks before.

@@dededeletethis9940 yeah that's a good point! The TV world and the metaverse aren't the same but they are similar so it makes sense they would work the same in terms of death. This video just made me want to cry. I only played P5R, so I didn't get the weird vanilla version of him, and felt sympathy for him throughout the story, especially now that I'm replaying. But learning JUST how fucked up his life was and all really makes me wanna cry. Akechi is a trickster and is used to escaping palaces as they're collapsing. I wouldn't be remotely surprised if he found a way to survive, but preferred to fly under the radar and not tell the PTs. I do think he should have some kind of consequence, but given the metaverse (and the fact it's basically destroyed, despite the little hint of it at the very end), it feels like it'd be very hard to prove. I'm not sure if he can just be like, "yep, I did it" and not have to explain further how on-record. I'd like to believe that he goes to a mental health facility for a while, similar to what would happen to someone who pleads non-guilty by reason of insanity. I know in the unused scene, he's meant to go to rehab for a month, before leaving to help Joker, but I wouldn't be surprised if he goes back afterwards. Sometimes jail time isn't the consequence that is needed.

Toys are a luxury for those with financial insecurity, and the fact that she played along with Akechi's childish fantasies of being a hero proves that she didn't just buy it to keep him quiet. The second piece of evidence is that she would have Akechi wait in an onsen while she was working. And this video just made my love for him grow so thank you for the amazing content! Also, I agree that Navi Akechi is the best! Not only do I love the different comments and the thinly veiled flirting but, I don't know if anyone else picked up on this, he also goes full 'Mom' on Sumire. Like, every time something happens to her, Akechi sounds like a parent who's child just got hurt. Especially the line "Yoshizawa-san! Wasn't anyone paying attention to her!?". If that doesn't sound like a concerned/angry parent then I don't know what does. Not only are those lines funny as hell but they can also be seen as interesting hints at how Akechi views a guardian or someone with responsibility for another, not only in general but also as himself.

Akechi analysis is always an interesting topic, just seeing the different points of view and what all went into his character. The sociocultural context really helped to make his character make even more sense, and made it hurt that much more too. I just wanted to add my own little fun details from a conversation me and a friend had once, regarding his weapons. Specifically, his Robin Hood appearance weapons. They're toys, sure, but it's more than that. He uses a ray gun and a beam saber, both of which give off light. He sincerely wanted to be the light in someone's life, the good that would combat evil. He wanted to cast light upon the darkness of society, exposing the shadows that lurked beneath the surface. But instead, he became the one to cast the shadows. Lighting up false truths, while keeping the real truth silenced. The hand he was dealt dragged him across the serrated edge of society, messing him up and causing him to take the darker path away from the person he seemed to have wanted to be. He couldn't be the Robin Hood, taking from the upper levels and giving the truth to the masses. He was a trickster, left with power and an unstable mind with a goal to destroy. (this was a very good video and I would share with my friend, but she already tried to share it with me while I was watching because apparently we share one braincell when it comes to this lad)

Love this video so far, and I'ma let you finish, but just one correction at this point. In the anime, it's clarified that Akechi was passed around relatives. That's not a retcon or an inconsistency; as far as I've researched, foster families ARE often relatives of the child. And if there are no willing relatives, foster care is rare; they just get put in an orphanage. That's where you'd get the high staff-to-children ratio. Akechi, however, was among family. That's not saying he was necessarily treated WELL by them, but it is a bit if a different picture.

The three stages of Akechi also completes the Hegal comparison of Thesis, Antithesis and Synthesis for him. Thesis - Detective Prince: The Detective Prince is the thesis, the starting point and what is presented to us the players and the world around him. And while his Crow outfit might not be what you’d expect of someone’s rebellious spirit, giving it more of a nobleman look but it perfectly fits the Detective Prince persona. Robin Hood being his base Persona is likewise a really awesome and interesting thing because it’s very likely that this was in fact his original Persona. I look at Robin Hood as being the manifestation of Akechi’s own personal desires to be a hero from when he was younger, if Robin Hood’s schtick was to take from the rich and give to the poor, then Akechi’s is very much the same of wanting to be a detective and play hero to put away corrupt adults like his father etc. It’s also nice to see the facade chip away just a little bit in combat and that he’s very much a dork and a showoff in a very Tokusatsu hero way that is hammy as hell and it completely effin’ works. I wouldn’t be surprised even more if he grew up watching Neo Featherman shows as a kid and aspired to be like that, heck you can even tie that into the whole thing of having a toy gun playing hero as a kid to emulate those same ones. I wouldn’t be surprised if these notions of Justice were further amplified and brought back up to the surface through his relationship with Joker. Antithesis - Black Mask: The Black Mask is the antithesis and it’s the exact opposite of what you’d expect him to be on first impressions. You wouldn’t expect the prim and proper Detective Prince to be a berserker with rage issues, self-loathing and having all these feelings of anger, envy, spite, inadequacy and pent up baggage so when it all comes tumbling out, it’s honestly one hell of a contrast to see him be so chaotic. Loki is such an awesome and unique fit for the Black Mask being a trickster, a deceiver, a destroyer and ultimately someone of mayhem and chaos. I wouldn’t be surprised if Loki was brought up to the surface through Yaldabaoth, Shido and/or even Wakaba to some extent and it reflected his darker impulses and side that he tries to repress in order to blend in with society. And well, he’s a slave to these desires by wanting revenge on Shido that he’ll throw away his humanity, his reason and any bonds he could have had. Synthesis - 3rd Semester: 3rd Semester is the synthesis of the real him being somewhere in the middle and coming together by becoming a better version of himself that isn’t broken and alone through Joker and enabling himself to be unapologetically honest with himself. So he doesn’t have to hide behind false pretence, trying to be something that he isn’t and that it isn’t about fighting against your darker impulses but embracing them and using them as a force for good. He’s smug, ruthless and just as much of a berserker that loves to throw down as he was in his BM time but it’s combined with the uncompromising desire to do good that DP seemed to want to do and break Maruki’s reality because it’s the right thing to do, consequences be damned because it’s a lie and he’s done playing a pawn to someone else’s desires and being overwhelmed by his own crap. I guess you could say, it’s adhering to his own personal brand of justice. Likewise, he’s fully in control of himself. Everything about him just screams “Now you’re dealing with the real deal here.” Everything comes full circle with Hereward in the 3rd Awakening completing his journey as a hero/anti-hero type of character with it basically being Robin Hood but with a darker colour palette ala BM and Loki. It completes the state of Synthesis by becoming a hero that abides by his own chaotic brand of justice and execution but is still someone on the side of good who may operate in the grey area more than others but he’s perfectly fine with that because that’s who he is.

For if Akechi is alive or not, hear me out on this. I don't think he ever died in the normal route. I think the wish was for them to have a new chance and that included him not going to jail, but both maruki and him thought he died, so that he wasn't any different from wakaba and okumura. Thing here is, joker was aware from the very beginning and refused that reality. But then the fact that he acts so goddamn weird in the bad end. I think it's because he actually does die in that one. He goes to stop maruki on his own, loosing his life in the process and being brought back by maruki, which would explain the sudden and drastic change. Then, he really is a puppet. Meaning that he is very much alive and well in the good end. But that's just my take on it lol

I loved your analysis of Akechi. I love Smug Akechi, I couldn't stand him as prince detective, but I immediately fell in love with him as those prim layers were peeled off. I was especially struck by the "thrown away child" portion of the video. I'm a huge fan of the Yakuza series, but being a westerner I never really took much pause or thought about the implications of Kiryu being an orphan and then later running an orphanage himself. I would be so interested in seeing you do a deep dive character analysis on the yakuza characters. There are tons of videos about the lore and the criminal elements. But, I haven't seen anything that address the soci-cultural lens of Japan for that series. For example in Yakuza 5 the big struggle is that Haruka is a pop-star but hides the fact that she is an orphan and her adoptive father was a yakuza. As a westerner I'm thinking this will only boost her popularity and what's the big deal, we have entire tv shows based on families of well-known criminals. The reaction was quite different and I would love to see your analysis on this series. Great video will be subscribing. Thanks!

The added statistics at 14:00 gave me a bit of an eye opener on just how much it mattered that Akechi was a non-marital birth. I was aware of the stigma, but to see it laid out is something else. That and I was ignorant to the specifics of what a Throwaway child was- I assumed sheer abandonment as the story has come up in other media I've consumed and that lined up well enough for my naive understanding, but to hear of how it's practically a bureaucratic form of abandonment that can doom these children not just to a lack of family now, but a lack of the potential for family through adoption, is interesting. Beyond this very much appreciated context, this was an extremely entertaining recap of Akechi's story throughout. Akechi is undoubtedly one of the most interesting stories in P5R to me, so it was a joy to listen to a nice analysis after completing the game :) Man, I just love how the detective prince facade challenged the PT to solidify their morals, and then Akechi himself was challenged by Joker (and vice versa) constantly leading all the way up to his final moment. And dang, that final moment is a joy to me. Forgive the gushing at my own interpretations, the game is extremely fresh in my mind and all that. That final moment where Akechi sacrificed himself for the PT hit so well for me as in my read it was very much a moment of Akechi's convictions being destroyed in just a single moment as he was granted the actualization he's craved through his entire life. I won't lie, I typed the following just before you tackled the subject yourself around 55:00 but I actually stand by my interpretations and enjoy how they flow even with your analysis: Akechi asks to make a deal in that final moment- he doesn't simply save us and move on- he demands that we end Shido's crimes. At that moment it's clear that Akechi has changed, as he doesn't demand for Shido's death, he asks specifically that we change his heart, but it's what came next that stood out to me. Because in this moment, my interpretation is that Akechi, while sacrificing himself, and while accepting the PT's method's to fulfill his revenge, is still putting his revenge at the forefront of his mind. The reason he is trying to save us isn't FOR us, it's FOR HIM- or so my read would claim. But then Joker is able to mention the glove, an otherwise unnecessary thing to mention that demonstrates that Joker cares about and believes in Akechi- despite it all. It's a moment of confirmation from Joker that to him Akechi has worth and matters as he's demonstrating that everything he's offered Akechi thus far in their relationship was sincere- that even in a moment where he knows he won't see Akechi again, he doesn't falter- he demonstrates that his word remains, their promise intact- all that. To me it was a nice way for Joker to say "I care. Come out of this." even knowing it's death- it was Joker proving the relationship wasn't an act from his end even up til now when he KNOWS a lot of it was from Akechi's end. Akechi went and fostered a sense of lingering insincerity within himself that prevented him from attaining the appreciation and genuine relationships he wanted- the resentment at his circumstantial life sharpening that disdain over time. But Joker goes and says he saw that, and fuck you, I care. Get outta this. And you see Akechi go wide-eyed, stunned, that after believing he would never fill that hole in himself, he is granted actualization by Joker, and in that moment- with a wall between them and death a moment off- his sacrifice gained new meaning. I preached it more than I liked, but dang if rewatching my recordin' of that scene doesn't reaffirm all these feelings, because that murderin' dolt mutters that Joker is strange to bring it up and care even now, but what's the guy do? HE FUCKIN' SMILES, RIGHT IN THE FACE OF DEATH. To me Akechi's death is the highlight of his entire tale, because it's a satisfying conclusion to the tragedy that was Akechi. He became a monster lusting for revenge and longing for someone- anyone to care about him in a world that seemed disinterested in who he really was. He'd become cold and doomed to seek false highs from playing his detective prince game. And in his final moment he attempted to close life on his own damaged (if much reformed now) terms- get me my revenge- you are the only one capable of it- go. And Joker changed that motivation right then and there, not through force, but just through his own sincerity. Damned good tale. Oh, as for your ask on third semester + true end Akechi my take is pretty much our metaverse understanding of cognitions but with extra steps as Maruki controls perception. Just like how the world collapsed into the metaverse and then people forgetting the PT caused them to vanish, I think the world simply works "like" that but with extra steps with Maruki's influence. So other dead characters vanished because people around them- usually the people who wished them back in the first place- realized it was wrong. They didn't find out Akechi was "wrong" so much as "unlikely" until SUPER late into the arc- we're talking day before the boss fight late- and even then only Joker knew at the start. So perhaps Joker's trust in their promise made even being told Akechi died to seem wrong- whereas believing he lived seemed right. Perhaps it was Joker's wish that granted Akechi to begin with but he hadn't come to terms with accepting death was even possible because they have a promise to keep- that promise remains steady in his mind even into the final day after Maruki afterall. So perhaps (again), the reason Akechi didn't vanish in Maruki's reality is because 1) they didn't know it was impossible- just unlikely. 2) Joker never, even after knowing he was dead, fully accepted it because of their promise which superseded even reality to him 3) he appears in the true end because reality is how it "ought" to be and they are being cheeky and saying Joker's determination surrounding the promise has changed what it "ought" to be. That said, the no consequences part of true end is a curious subject that is entirely left up to interpretation since we get just a glance and don't know what comes after- I'm with you on thinkin' no consequences for Akechi assuming he lives in this final reality would be... lame. Long spam done, sorry about that, game is good and words are plentiful. Thank you dearly for creating this! I thoroughly enjoyed what you've presented :)

I also think the fact that he is left handed and that his zodiac sign is Gemini are both interesting things to llok at. Left has always been portrayed as a bad omen in ancient cultures (things like if a flock of birds goes left sth bad will happen) and generally speaking, the dishonest side (after all, one chooses the *right* path, not the the left; and isn’t there an idiom saying a “left handed friend” is a fake friend?). The word sinister literally comes from the greek word for left; which is why I think it’s cool that Akechi is the only left handed PT. His zodiac sign is also a neat detail: Gemini is a symbol for duality, which is awfully fitting for this character (need i say why? lmao) Anyways awesome video like every other, I love the insight it provides and it adds a lot to my understanding of P5. :)

the jazz club is also interesting because "no more what ifs" is like written by akechi if you look at the lyrics, like a message from akechi to joker

All the likes for sure. Akechi is one of my faves too. I have tried writing a thing off of that point of Akechi wishing that he had met Joker earlier in life. I may have to flesh it out more and see where it can really go.

P5R was my first experience of this story and I have to say.. It was really shocking (and also kinda amusing) to hear the details of how Akechi's confidant worked in vanilla P5. Especially that 8th "RANK UP!" unlock moments before getting shot in the head 😭😭😭. Really goes to show how much they improved the character writing between those two. I truly just can't imagine this storyline being the same without his P5R confidant ranks and further development in the 3rd semester.

Definitely deserving of that length. I mean, his Confidant in base and Royal is like night and day. And Royal made the buildup to his rivalry with Joker much clearer.

As a fellow Akechi stan this was super fascinating for me to watch! I didn't know basically anything about the foster care system and adoption and family documentation in Japan so it put a lot of interesting context behind why Akechi was the way he was. Personally I can't decide if I think Akechi actually died or not but the side of me that doesn't want him to be dead because I want him to eventually be able to have a semblance of a life outside of Shido's influence and control will say he's off having pancakes and listening to as much jazz as he wants lmao.

It's been confirmed now that Akechi did awaken to Robin Hood and Loki at the same time, but I do think there's something to be said of Akechi bringing Robin Hood out onky after he's met Joker and of Hereward being based on Robin Hood rather than Loki.
@Dinker27
@Dinker27 3 года назад
Call me odd, but I got the feeling Akechi was a traitor because of the Robin Hood mask; it looked like a mosquito to me, or some kind of parasite having gotten a fresh meal. With the social context here, that hits a bit too close; not that Akechi is a parasite as a character, but to how his society would view him as a "throw away child".

1:45 THANK GOD YOU SAID THAT YOU FEEL HE MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR HIS ACTIONS. I've seen too many comments saying that because akechi's been manipulated that he shouldn't be held accountable for the bad things he does, and watching let's plays of youtube made me feel that the game does the same thing. You have no idea how frustrated I got with P5's writing because futaba doesn't get the chance call akechi out for traumatizing her, giving her many years of ptsd and suicidal thoughts since he killed her mother. In a game all about holding the people that ruin other people's lives accountable, the lack of her rightfully holding akechi accountable infuriates me. I think I'm going to be able to listen to this video with a much more open mind, thank you so much.

I know this is kind of late to reply to, but... one thing I want to point out is while Akechi did commit the initial act which set the ball rolling, he wasn't the one who wrote or read to her the faked suicide note and blamed her for her own mother's death, nor the source of abuse from her relatives before Sojiro got custody. So yes, Akechi Goro is at fault for commiting the awful deed of killing someone infront of their own kid (if most likely unknowingly for the latter part). But he isn't the sole source of it. (This kind of stuff can be really difficult to put into words I guess, so apologies for any offense given. This was just something I really wanted to say after reading what you said, as I ended up interpreting it putting all the blame on Akechi. was that the right interpretation, especially for reading this at 3am? idk lol)
@MikulOnIce85
@MikulOnIce85 2 года назад
Your wording on this is pretty polite, so I'll quickly explain my point of view for you. Royal left me feeling that not enough blame was placed on shido for manipulating akechi and not enough on akechi for killing futaba's mother and haru's dad for his own selfish plans of trying to set up shido. And even with the reworking Akechi got in Royal, Futaba still isn't given a chance to hold him accountable for his actions. I do agree that Shido does hold blame for what happened, but overall I felt that Royal didn't do enough to make me feel that Akechi was truly held accountable. Like he only received a 'slap on the wrist' from the phantom thieves and I wonder how they would have all reacted if they knew that Akechi killed futaba's mother along with Haru's dad. I hope this helps you understand my point of view a bit better.

I see, I see! Thanks for sharing. I wonder if it's because that I've been delving into so many fanworks these past few months that I didn't get that feeling as much, as when the situations came up people DID acknowledge it all. From what little I can tell, it seemed like an intentional descision by the writers to avoid non-mission based interaction between certain characters to I guess sort of indicate how important the mission at the time was. I think I understand a bit more now, thank you.

In terms of Akechi's survival, I think it needs to be considered that we have solid evidence of him getting out of Palaces really easily before that point. When he kills Okumura, it's done after the Treasure is stolen and the Palace starts collapsing, so he somehow made it out of a collapsing Palace faster than the Phantom Thieves who started running much sooner. And I wouldn't put it past him to impulsively fake his own death on the spot (extra parallels with Joker!) and slither off to lick his wounds and figure himself out after. This still combines well with the idea that Maruki granted Joker's wish first: only a cognitive adjustment would be required for Akechi to decide to come forward when he normally wouldn't, and cognitive adjustments are Maruki's specialty. It would then follow that Akechi, as Joker's fellow, would awaken to the truth independently after the incongruous experience of being let free after his confession, shaking off Maruki's influence. And the shipping glasses come on very firmly when you consider that Joker knew Akechi was the traitor all along during Sae's Palace. His rivalry responses in Rank 7 hit even harder then, because he knows the talk he's having with Akechi is layered. Moreover, him accepting the Rank 8 duel knowing what he does is the sort of sheer insanity that makes it clear he's not rational when it comes to Akechi. And yes, he also knows that he's not meant to be killed right there, but a reasonable person doesn't duel a murderer with deadly powers just because. In the context of the later Sumire fight, it's also a show of respect on Akechi's part: he's not afraid to fight Joker, because he knows Joker is strong enough to survive him.

Today I learned that despite being an extremely developed country, the gender imbalance in Japan is much worse than I expected. It infuriates me to no end that families adopt husbands just to carry on their legacy and I just found out that women carry only around 10% of seats in the Japanese House of Representatives. Ik this video was about Akechi of course but geez, I didn’t know the gender gap was so large in Japan

I have said it before and I will say it again: It says a lot about Akechi's character that he wants to choose his own path and bear the consequences of his actions in Royal, despite what it would cost him. He's not punishing himself, he knows that what he did throughout his life lead him to his fate, he knew he brought it upon himself and he's willing to bear that. It says a lot about his character to be able to take responsibility like that at the cost of one's life. Of course there is also that thing about not wanting to live under the manipulation of another, but he said it himself, it is only personal principle that he repaid his debts. Even if he lived, he turned himself into the police and was going to face charges to take responsibility. It really says a lot about him, Which only further means that even more so he deserves a second chance, at least from the eyes of others

Almost forgot, as far as the whole thing of is 3rd Semester Akechi really him or not, my gut and my belief is pointing in the direction of I think it is actually him. As far Joker and the rest of the gang know they only think he died, it was left ambiguous with the whole last stand ending that he had towards Shido's cognition of him, it isn't too much of a stretch to say that that's what Maruki might mean by everyone's wishes being granted, Joker's being that he could have saved him. It's possible that he did indeed survive and get the hell out of dodge when Shido's palace collapsed and had time to come to terms with everything. And well it was basically a week after when they took on Yadelbaoth, it gives Akechi the time needed to look inside himself and go "Who am I and what do I want?" And well, obvious they won and then immediately Maruki's reality came into play very quickly. If it were a cognitive brought upon by Joker's desire to save him then Joker's cognitive idea of Akechi would be a lot more different, more of an idealised version I guess in a way of remembering someone in a better light after they've died. 3rd Semester Akechi is so not that. And whereas Joker does hesitate a bit when taking on Maruki, Akechi just doggedly determined from the word go to shatter this lie, it's too convincing for it to not be the real deal. xD There was also a fabulous scene of Akechi in Rehab that a lovely chap by the name of Faz uncovered. I know i'm super late to this, but acording to cut content from p5r akechi in fact survived the incident, but after it he turned himself to the police and accepted the concequences of the people he killed, now living in a reformatory, so the Akechi we see in the third semester is in fact an actualization. This cutsciene takes place when all the confidants help joker get out of prison, and in this cutsciene we see too emploees talking about Akechi and that "he when out for a bit to save a friend". Atlus problably cut it out because they wanted to make Akechis situation more vage, but its also nice to investigate and find out he's alive. I found this information in de SMT wiki of Akechi, in the Trivia section

I'm not so sure that's really evidence of the Akechi we were with being a fake. If that were the case then the protagonist himself would also be an imposter since once you defeat Maruki the world goes back to him having been taken by the police since Christmas. It just means he was sent back to where he was suppose to be Edit: I just realized this comment is a year old! So sorry for the ping!
