I speak with Charles “CHIP” Lanskey about all things night vision. More specifically, all the questions someone who is just getting into Night vision would ask if they had a chance to talk to someone as knowledgeable on the subject as CHIP is.

Most folks just cant afford or find these items at this late date. Nor do they have the time necessary to get proficient with them. I suggest that they concentrate more on trips and lethal traps. The one thing that high end, tech dependent operators, do not like to hear. In a civilian WROL scenario, few of us will be out taking it to the other guys. We should be hunkering down. Hopefully in a well conceived prepper retreat, with a butt load of booby traps in our perimeters. Trips and traps are limited only by our imagination. Just like night vision, these devices are serious combat multipliers. They come with a stigma but we should not let that bother us. If someone is coming after the stuff we need to survive, or they want to harm our families, nothing should be off the table. These devices are essentially non contact force. Thats where you want to be, fighting without contact until the aggressor moves on to an easier target. Figure out what devices are most effective for your AO and start gathering the supplies you'll need, NOW.

"He who sees at night, rules the night". If you can see it during the day, night vision allows you to see it at night. He classified Thermal as a night vision, it's not. it's 24/7 vision. It works as well in the day as night. Thermal will reveal heat signatures the same during the day as at night. If I can have only one, Thermal is it. If you can't afford Thermal, any night vision is better than none. You can something decent (like ATN) for around $600 in night vision for a rifle scope. Thermal is around $1,200. This will give you a few hundred yards vision, day and night. If you want to reach out 1,000s of yards, you will start adding $1,000s depending what you are getting. I don't have a rifle thermal, yet. But, I do have a FLIR. It was under $600 and rated to detect a man at 100 yards. My personal experience was a skunk at 150-175 yds.

My sons pooled their resources together and purchased a night vision scope for me and gave it to me on Fathers Day. I've mounted it on both an AR and my 7mm-08 magazine fed rifle. I also have a rangefinder that links to the scope, which makes shooting a little like a game. I enter a little information (wind speed) and it provides a shooting solution. And does it in less than a second. It's great for daylight or night. It came with an IR "flashlight" but it's a little weak. A stronger one is my next purchase. Being in Utah, I need to look up the class Colion came for... And Colion said he's fallen down the rabbit hole. I think someone pushed him.

I remember when I got to use nvgs back in the early 90’s. Our patrols or infills and/or exfills we had the point man and the rear guard with nvgs and the rest of us followed the patrol caps of the soldiers in front of us. The only thing that slowed us down was fog. That was fun as we ran through the woods at night.

I love the riser talk. With my Primary Arms ACSS Raptor I have the lever mount that puts the center of the optic 1.5 inches above the bore. I added a 1 inch riser to keep me more upright, and easier to wear ear pro and other gear. For some reason people in these gun groups don't understand it, and some really like to tell me their opinion of my set up

The gen 2+ Photonis tubes are pretty solid if you get them at a good price. A green thin filmed elbit tube will still outperform them in low light so if the cost is really close I’d still go with the gen 3 tube

I bought a super cheap NVG basically a child’s toy IMHO. Plastic goggles that actually let you see what’s going on in a pitch black situation. I get around the house fine and even creeped up on my pizza guy in the dark. Would I use it to get out of the house in an emergency? Yes. Would I use it to go into an outdoor war fighting situation? No. But I guess cheap NVG is better than no NVG. IMHO

Its more then just a monocular. To be effective with the NVGs hours and days of training. Thousands of rounds, suppressor, then IR laser. A $3000 PVS 14 will end up being $7000-9000 at the end to be effective.

I was really disappointed watching one particular episode of The Orville. They go running into this subterranean tunnel and I just knew they where going to pull out some cool glasses that had some amazing night vision...all they have are hand held white lights. And I bet they weren't even 500 lumen. 400 years more advanced but just flashlights for away members?

Night Vision, the addiction more expensive than drugs... ~Brass Facts Hello from 2023, Also anyone who's getting NVG's RIGHT NOW, if you have a standard PVS14 an M30 to M37 iris for a camera will screw right into the front and a clear 37mm filter can be used for a sacrificial front end lens and you can use 37mm camera pinch caps to store safely. I snagged a deal on a PVS 14 with a Gen3 Elbit WP ~2690fom SLH tube, and compared to the old gen2 green that i've seen before it's AMAZING. No specks or blotches and the black and white contrast for my colorblindness is fantastic! (center res 81Lpmm, SNR 33.2) April of 2023 was $3200. I was shocked at what I paid for vs what showed up. The only drawback to thermals is you don't get to see through glass with it. No driving, no looking out your window.

Image intensifiers are half the cost, and easy to destroy if you expose it to daylight. Thermal scopes are great at seeing animals in the dark and from light into darker areas like during the day ...but don't see through glass.

Night vision has some advantages and thermal has its advantages. There disadvantages are clear if you served in the military. Civilian models are the same as military expensive. You pay to play in the dark! I prefer open sights and low power light. Some of my longest shots in military were with no light .

I started off with not as much money and bought a Gen 2+ monocular (which is tremendously better than what I had in the 101st Airborne in the 80’s which was NADA, CO had the only device in the company) and it’s a surprisingly good performer, especially with my MRO red dots and the mounts allowing me to mount to any rifle it’s rated to handle.

For shooting, I can run a single tube on my non-dominant eye and use my red dot normally through my dominant eye. Since I’m used to shooting with both eyes open and learned to shoot on illuminated scopes with small eye boxes, my brain processes both pictures and lays them over one another without issues. My feeling is anyone can train themselves to take two pictures from two eyes and make them work together with enough practice.

He actually talked pretty candidly about the limitations and down-sides. That's pretty rare. This was a good public service, CN. The physical conditioning, training, and costs of TACTICAL NV are cost prohibitive. The chronic neck injuries are almost unavoidable. The presbyopia sets in early and stronger. Nobody talks about this stuff, but everybody wants to "see in the dark." Hints for civilians: a chem light kicks out very useful ambient light when tossed into a dark room, the back yard, etc. They're $1 each and light as a feather. P.S. Yes, they make IR chem lights. They cost more than $1 each. You know how to defeat state of the art NV? Light switches and big fires. Work every time.
