I feel the same way. The love and respect they had for each other could be seen every time they appeared on camera together. They would light the screen every time!
TBH I believe they loved each other (looks like an on and off secret relationship) but couldn't be together and get married. Aside from the timing wasn't right (it's in her book), they have different religious beliefs. So they just decided to end up as best friends, supportive in good and bad times, and marry people who remind them of each other. This can be the reason why she likes her song I Honestly Love You more now (and John said he could only wish that song was for him)
