The TRUTH about PLAYING POKER for a LIVING!

In this poker vlog I discuss what it takes to play poker for a living. There are many personality traits that are needed in order to be successful. I do not recommend that anyone quits their job or drops out of college to play poker for a living. I have been playing poker for a living for 14 and it is not all sunshine and rainbows. Over 95% of people that try to sustain themselves from poker alone will go broke and quit.

The move is to be semi pro study and play part time while having a couple other steady streams of income both active and passive. I think you can max ev and value if you play the best games only. I know one of my biggest leaks is playing in bad games during the day. Might as well work during the day make money and then play poker at night and weekends and play an event or two a week.

I've only seen that interview where you say Trooper97 is trash. Then I saw this. Heard of year for a couple years. I must say sir, you seemed very lowkey and relaxed. You did not come off as cocky. I felt that I was listening to a veteran. I have been wanting to play poker professionally for about 15 years or so. Never got to it. Lost a lot of money playing plus losing on table games. I never lost the plan of wanting to win a tournament though. I'm at that point (43 years old) again in my life. Falling back into poker again at least with vids. This vid is like one or two that I saw 7 years ago or so. It seems dream destroying, but it's actually refreshing. It a reality check. It's nice to be reminded. Thank you.

Hey Jeff, thanks for posting this video. If you remember we played together at the Wynn $400 tournament, I was the Indian guy opposite you "QT flops well". I am trying to play poker tournament "semi-pro", I have clocked 200 hrs of live MTT poker @ 45$/hr winrate. But recently the swings have been affecting me mentally, especially the final table river suckouts. Yesterday I played a 2 day MTT and had my pocket KK's cracked 5 times in a row, and got eliminated 7th place (300 entrants) losing to the chip leader with my KK vs AK on AK76 board, u know what the river could be. I was thinking of giving up or just play casually and not take the game seriously anymore, but watching this video makes me feel confident again and I feel like returning back to the tables stronger.

2006 I won my first tournament on BoDog a $55 buy in for 4.5k . Started playing at Seminole Hard Rock in Tampa, Florida while working full time as a chef in Orlando, FL. I hit the spade royal Jackpot for 30k. I quit my job and went to Vegas. Started playing 60 hours per week at the Wynn. I got rekt by the regs there and the pit. Had no concept of bankroll management. Did not know that 30k was not enough to play 2-5nl UNCAPPED. I tucked tail and ran back to Orlando. I'm still working as a full-time chef...do not enjoy my job and wish I had friends like Boski to help guide me along instead of the vultures I associated with when I was playing full time. Bankroll management is so crucial if you're gonna play full time...dont be cocky....stay humble and stay away from Sports Betting and the PIT.

It was a lil $40 tournament and I made the final table. Once we moved to S.C. it was illegal to play so I only got to play like 4 or 5 tournaments a year. I played my first WSOP tourny in Cherokee and beat out 500 players for my first ring. But I still would never quit to play poker professionally. Quitting my job to become a pro player was the best thing I ever did. Not because I was a huge success, it was so hard I ended up starting a business. Poker allowed me to transition from an hourly job to owning a business. Poker really was the hardest time I’ve ever had from a mental prospective. My business is now a wild success and I thank poker. Poker players like Boski could be great business men and make 10x more just with the skills they have from these times if they chose to transition.

Excellent advice here. So important about tilting off. I never tilted on the table but a few times was a big baby and headed to the pits if I busted a sacred tournament I was supposed to cash. What a baby! Never again! That advice about disregarding the buy inn and to play like a video game is priceless! Playing for a living is only viable with enough bankroll from winnings ( not other sources) plus all the things mentioned here too. A stop loss is absolutely essential with only 3 buy inns easily accessible available on any day. So if you have 200 buy inns make sure most is in a safe place you can't immediately access. Even then it's possible to have downswings. Problem is 200 buy inns are very difficult in today's economy unless it's from an online or live tournament win. But they say ( I'm not sure there is actual evidence but evrn the author of GTO modern poker theory ) that good live player's typically ITM 30-50% of the time.

Mr. Boski, great vlog as always. Before I watched this or the previous one, I had been meaning to comment. I wanted to tell you, it is very refreshing, and we all deeply appreciate your honesty in these videos. It is extremely difficult to put yourself out there, show the bad beats, and show many of the negatives about this lifestyle. No other vlogger exposes that part of the lifestyle. Great job, and keep up the excellent work, and your turn will come, I am sure.

Good stuff Boski. For the masses: Poker is hard enough when the blinds stay the same(cash games). If the blinds go up(tournaments), the game becomes volatile, and is designed for fun. Dabble in volatility in moderation. Cash games can be a side hustle. Don't quit your day job.

Dang my uncle was a “Poker profesional” saw he made a solid living out of it too. Had a house in the suburbs and drove a nice Cadillac. I remember asking him how he got so much money and his words were “Life of gambles ain’t for everyone but if you think your mentally strong yk who to talk too” I was a kid at the time so words aren’t very vivid. Now he lives in a bigger house and managed to even buy us a car (TrackHawk). Ig he’s the reason as too why I maybe want to peruse this line of work. I’ve been playing as a kid and damn good at it too, trading gold fishes as chips. Thx for the tip

Damn Jeff I can tell you speak from your heart. I'm literally just a random foreign student in UK, sometimes winning at cash here and there, but now I just started grinding small tournaments thanks to you. Your analysis at live poker based on the appearance of players is something so simple, so useful, yet that I didn't consider so much. I hope your channel gets the fat number it deserves.

I work in the oil industry as a landman and have run out of work due to the crashing oil market. Wouldn't be quitting my job since I no longer have one, considering moving to Vegas to deal poker (I have dealing experience) and also playing as a part time pro. Would be closer to family and I enjoy dealing. Might see you on the felts in the near future!

Hi Jeff. Love the game with a passion however not so good with my bank roll! I often want to go back to poker full time ( 80% cash, 20% tournament) instead of living comfortable with a pretty cool job , building a bankroll. Playing now and then, travelling to poker events on my time off. When i get the urge to leave I watch this video. Thx.
