Unlikely Success Sports Motivation video about NFL Quarterbacks selected first overall since 2000 and their performance in the league.
Many of these QBs are called 'busts,' but the results of their careers tell a vastly different story. Matthew Stafford and Eli Manning won Super Bowls, Cam Newton and Joe Burrow both played in one, and Cam Newton also won an MVP.
Jamarcus Russell and David Carr's careers were letdowns but overall these quarterbacks played quite well in the NFL.

Should NFL teams prioritize taking quarterbacks first overall?
@IxAMxNIGHTMARE
@IxAMxNIGHTMARE 7 часов назад
Never. It's a coin toss. The NFL has managed to sensationalize the draft which not one player has ever been drafted who was NFL proven. College proven but if college and NFL were the same JaMarcus Russell would probably just retiring.
@johnselwitz5362
@johnselwitz5362 5 дней назад
When a team is in the midst of what’s known as a rebuilding phase, I’ve always felt that the key is to rebuild the inside first. I was told a long time ago that if a team has a really good offensive and defensive line, they can beat any other team in the league regardless of how talented everyone else is, and that still holds true to this day. Look at any Super Bowl team (winners or losers) in history and you’ll find that they all had savages in the trenches. If a team has a horrible year and gets the first overall draft pick, if they need a quarterback and there’s a generational talent available, sure go ahead and pick them, but then use the rest of the draft and free agency to rebuild the players doing the dirty work rather than going after receivers or running backs. I actually don’t consider David Carr a bust (at least not in the way we view JaMarcus Russell) because no quarterback would’ve been successful when they have two seconds or less to throw the ball, he had no chance in Houston.
@theunlikelysuccess
@theunlikelysuccess 4 дня назад
@johnselwitz5362 I agree with you completely on building out the team. One of the recent times where it worked the opposite was with Burrow. Cincy drafted him, then prior to year two spent a bunch of free agent money on his line, but for the most part I think building through the lines is the way to NFL success. Also, Carr was essentially ruined by the Texans. At least he got paid, cause otherwise it would have been a travesty.
@johnselwitz5362
@johnselwitz5362 4 дня назад
@@theunlikelysuccess Very true, I remember that Burrow was sacked more than any other quarterback in 2021, he had a young and inexperienced offensive line, although that wasn’t entirely the O-line’s fault, Burrow often played hero ball too much rather than checking it down or throwing it away (Bill Parcells once said that sometimes the best play a quarterback can make is simply throwing the ball out of bounds). But even still, the unsung heroes of that 2021 Bengals team were the defensive linemen they acquired in the offseason. Trey Hendrickson, B.J. Hill and Larry Ogunjobi combined for 26.5 of their 42 total sacks that season and improved that defense. It wasn’t an astronomical improvement but it was good enough to make a run to the Super Bowl, those guys were crucial to that team. My favorite example was the Vikings from around 2007 to 2010, they were awesome to watch. Their O-line had absolute units like Matt Birk, Bryant McKinnie, and Steve Hutchinson opening up holes for Adrian Peterson to run through, and then on the other side you had Jared Allen and the Williams Brothers making life miserable for opposing offenses. In 2008, they won a division title with Gus Frerotte and Tarvaris Jackson at quarterback, they get Favre the following season and nearly win it all. I think that’s the blueprint that every team that’s rebuilding should use, along with not giving up on a rookie quarterback after one difficult season. If Peyton Manning had been a rookie in today’s NFL and in his first season thrown 28 interceptions along with a completion percentage of less than 60%, he’d get labeled a bust and Colts fans would want to trade him.
@theunlikelysuccess
@theunlikelysuccess 4 дня назад
@@johnselwitz5362 The Vikings have been a pretty competent organization but the playoffs are their ultimate enemy. I couldn't agree more on that team, they were the ones with the Love Boat disaster, right? Also, I think that it gets forgotten how valuable a good offensive line is.When the Patriots offensive line coach, Dante Scarnecchia, moved on they never recovered. You have to have the right guys and the right coaching but it makes all the difference. Peyton definitely would have been benched and seen as a bust. The lack of patience to develop guys is crazy.
@johnselwitz5362
@johnselwitz5362 4 дня назад
@@theunlikelysuccess Yep, although the Love Boat incident with the Vikings happened a few years prior in 2005, I’ll always believe it was a key factor in Mike Tice getting fired. I’ve said it before, the worst thing to ever happen to rookie quarterbacks was what happened from 2008 to 2012. Prior to then, a rookie quarterback leading a previously struggling team to the playoffs was unheard of, I know there was Roethlisberger in 2004 but the Steelers already had a solid running game and a dominant defense, and Ben was simply a game manager who was tasked to make an occasional throw and not mess things up. He was more of an exception to the rule, rookie quarterbacks used to be allowed time to settle in, learn the playbook, and even sit on the bench for a little while to be mentored by a veteran. But starting in 2008, you had Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Mark Sanchez (kinda), and Andy Dalton all go to subpar teams, and help lead them to the postseason. In 2012, three rookies in one year accomplished that feat: Andrew Luck, RG3, and Russell Wilson, with each guy having rookie of the year caliber seasons. So now people’s mindsets changed and expectations were raised, if a rookie quarterback comes in and struggles to adapt to the NFL, people will automatically say "well this guy got drafted to a bad team and led them to the playoffs his rookie season, why can’t that guy do it?" rather than using some logic and understanding that maybe that team already had a solid foundation and the quarterback was simply the spark to ignite their turnaround (i.e. Russell Wilson with the Seahawks)
@theunlikelysuccess
@theunlikelysuccess 3 дня назад
@@johnselwitz5362 I think Brady was trying to convey a similar message a few weeks back. The expectations have become so high that guys can't get through a full rookie deal before people move on. Wonder what will happen to JJ in Minnesota with Darnold's success.

It actually depend on who the qb is and who else is available in round 1. Now if its a payton manning, Elway, burrow i would draft them. But i always believed that most successful teams drafted qb after the team is built. So if there is someone im in love with and have a plan for than i would trade back and stockpile picks. But it also has to do with the organization and their patience. So the question is would i draft a qb number overall. Depends on who it is and my belief is if he is going to be a perennial pro bowler. After i drafted the qb though i would develop him by getting a veteran over him so he can do what kc did with mahomes. Development is just as important as talent.

@thomascox9362 Completely agree. I think teams have gotten obsessed with QB first overall rather than who is the most talented. It's largely due to many of the trade ups, but still I think they should go after who the true best player is.

Stafford not having a winning record wasn't his fault. The Lions wouldn't even have a bunch of those wins if he wasn't so damn clutch and keep leading game winning drives with Johnson as his receiver. He never had a great line. Never had a running game. Never had a proper defense. Never had a full roster of receivers. And they STILL made the playoffs a couple times with one of the least talented rosters I'd ever seen in a decade's worth of football. As a Packers fan, I couldn't help but think that Stafford and the Lions fans deserved way better than that horrible management team and woeful coaching. I'm happy he was a big part of the Rams getting another ring. He deserves it.

I think Andrew wouldn't surpass Mahomes or Brady, they both destroyed the Colts, and tbh that last loss to Mahomes demoralized him, because after years of being beaten by Brady, here comes Mahomes and later Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Joe Burrow. And I think with those guys, his Superbowl aspiration, ambition and hope would be dashed by any of them.
@theunlikelysuccess

@ftwsam2246 I think Andrew would have needed to find a great coach to beat KC. Not sure if that would have happened and he probably would have kept them too good to pick at the top end of any drafts. Indy did not do him a lot of favors in his time there.

2004 top QB's- How great is Rivers really when you have Tomlinson, Gates, Vincent Jackson, etc. often a great D and a great line, and never make the superbowl? Eli would have put up Peyton #'s on the Chargers, and Rivers could have been Daniel Jones on the Giants. As for Big Ben it is tough to tell where the Steelers system leaves off and Big Ben begins, but I also don't remember them winning as much with Kordell Stewart, Tommy Maddox, etc as they did with Big Ben either...
@theunlikelysuccess
@theunlikelysuccess 3 дня назад
@kpk33x I have always thought Rivers was top tier, but you're not wrong about the talent. I always thought Eli was a step below, but it's fair to say he had less talent on offense. I think the Giants defenses were better than the Chargers though. For Big Ben, I think his off field stuff overshadows how good he was on it. He also had a lot of talent over the years, but he was always pretty good. Anyway you look at the three, it's one of the best QB draft classes ever.

Improving your speaking rhythm will make your videos come across as more professional. You should also get a script editor. I don't think Stafford makes the hall of fame but not because he doesn't deserve it but because narrative and win/loss record is what QBs are judged for these days. Being loyal to the Lions cost him a gold jacket. No body paid attention to the lions until the trade so nobody outside of Detroit knows he had Joe Lombardi, Scott Lienhan, an in over his head Jim Bob Cooter, Derell Bevell for a second until Matt Patrica thought he could do a better job calling plays for him. That they drafted more pro bowl players in the last 4 years than the entire 12 years that Stafford was there. That the offense under Caldwell was so old school they didn't have 4 WR on the roster. That Patrica gutted the defense and handicapped the offense. That Goff had had more 100 yard rushers in 4 years than Stafford had in 12 years in Detroit. That they refused to trade Megatron and forced him to retire rather than making their team better. All they see is a QB with a losing record so he must have been the problem. I thought that the Superbowl run would have been enough but Cooper got all the credit and the injury filled next season erased all the momentum.
@theunlikelysuccess

@zeromega4541 Hopefully he ends up in the HOF. If the vantage point is that the HOF should include players you cannot tell the story of the NFL without then I would say he is very deserving. Man, they did MegaTron and Stafford dirty during all those years.

@@theunlikelysuccess It's tough being a Stafford fan especially back in the day. He put up video game numbers and everyone just gives the credit to the era. Because nobody knew how bad these OC guys were in Detroit until they screwed up some other franchise. Nobody knew how bad Scott Lienhan was at his job until he went to Dallas and the cowboys fans were calling for his head every week for mismanaging the offense. Nobody knew how bad Joe Lombardi was until he shat the bed with the chargers due to complete incompetence. No body knew that Matt Patrica took play calling duties away from Bevell as soon as he felt a bit of heat and proceeded to throw screen passes for the next 2 years until we went back to New England and threw a bunch of screen passes. They just pass off as it's a passing era or he had Megatron. He did have Megatron but what he didn't have was the option to the run a foreign concept like a bunch formation because the lions never had a 4th WR on the roster while he was in Detroit. Don't get me started on the Odell Beckham mistake. There biggest need was at WR in the 2014 draft in a stacked WR draft and they took a tight end. The next 2 WR off the board were Brandin Cooks and Odell Beckham Jr. Nope the lions would rather draft a TE and promote a guy off the practice squad. I need to watch the new lions. @@theunlikelysuccess tbh I just think that you can find a qb that can play at his level with the talent that he has around him, but for a much cheaper contract so you can put even more talent around that qb but who knows maybe he gets lucky and wins a big game

Saying that andrew luck colts team was good is crazy.

@timothyt2981 I don't remember saying they were a 'good' team, but I think they were a decently run organization. They also happened to perfectly time two generational talents at QB.

This man just said 18 of 24 drafts.......do you think the draft started in 2000?
@theunlikelysuccess

@long060 Lol, that's an error on my part. I start with 2000 and should have added that note....otherwise to your point....it seems like I believe the draft started in 2000

Eli led the league in ints 4 years..that's not what greats do

@DannyG21 Eli was built different overall. He had two of all-time postseason runs though, and it makes him memorable.

6 Pro Bowls, top 50 receiving yards, but injuries damage his case. His stats could be justified as worthy, and he's been consistent but no All-Pro teams or playoff runs...not sure how they're going to treat some of the great stat guys but a lot of QB's and WR's are going to have high totals that can't really be completely ignored.

What position should you take first overall ?
@theunlikelysuccess
@theunlikelysuccess 3 дня назад
@isaiahwilliams2332 I firmly believe in building through the lines, but I would say take best player available at #1. A lot of these QBs were not the best player in their draft class, but I don't think teams should pigeon hole themselves into one position with #1 overall.

Lol @ Michael Vick. We've seen qbs like him over and over and over and over. Fast, quick, cannon arm...not accurate at all and barely reads defenses. Barely went deep in playoffs and no rings.

@jdigitalseven7 You think so? There were other fast QBs but Vick had elite NFL speed. His accuracy was definitely an issue and he has admitted to not taking football seriously when he was in Atlanta. Appreciate the comment!

@zcrouch13 I'm not saying he's a lock....but he's going to have a case. It will be interesting what the HOF uses as the new barometer for getting in.

As a Seahawks fan I believe that if stays consistent especially if Goff wins a super bowl he will be.
