Among all the other events of the last few years, you may have missed this one: Spermageddon. This is the fun name for the idea that sperm counts among mainly ‘Western’ men are in freefall. The Spermageddon hype began with the publication of a 2017 study showing a nearly 60% drop in overall sperm counts in men living in North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
But four years later, it seems that Spermageddon has been overblown. By a lot. And all that hype has obscured the real issue behind declining male fertility.

Hello! I produced this video. Let me know if you have any questions about the video here and thanks for watching!
@karinshedd7334

I'll start: Hey Karin, what's the most interesting tidbit you learned for this video that didn't make the final cut? A: Great question! Dr. Smith told me that part of his work entails taking testicular biopsies from patients whose future fertility is in question in order to create sperm from them at a later date. These patients include people like young children with cancer or pre-everything transgender patients. However, because we still know so little about how sperm are made ('spermatogenesis'), he can't do that yet! So here's hoping we figure it out.

@AelwynMr
@AelwynMr 2 года назад
We know obese men have lower sperm count, so that's part of it. There is much more to lifestyle than that: inactivity, too much sitting and too little exercise, unhealthy eating, too much time spent inside, lack of sleep, mental health, and more. Then there are chemicals, which may also play some probably minor role, if indeed this is a trend that exists. As the host said, there are huge differences between the results of one lab and another, as well as between cities in the same country and so on. I say chemicals probably play a minor role because if it were this easy, you would expect a huge effect in people who are highly exposed (to BPA, say), but we've looked and... it's not that simple. Then are the studies controlled for age? Health? What about the frequency of ejaculation? If one jerks off twice daily, you know... and how is the change distributed? All go down? Some drop a lot and most not at all? These sort of reviews must be taken with much scepticism, and as always "more research is needed".

It is a super complicated issue. Pesticides and such have been shown to act like synthetic estrogens and studies have show rural farm areas have lower fertility rates amongst men than urban. Still, it would be nice to see how those results hold up considering the flaws you pointed out. Still, I do remember an article that made a big deal about Canada banning rubber ducky importing. It just seemed so weird. After reading it though, it was a bit shocking. It seemed, that Europe banned the a decade before hand and Canada finally did it as they were one of the few remaining countries left so they were worried they would become a dumping ground for them. What was all the hysteria about rubber duckies? Well, it seems that the material they were made out of leached synthetic estrogen and could affect male growth. Especially if licked or chewed on. It's like they were specifically made to dose babies with estrogens. So, yes, the subject is complicated.

@Ben Dover Yep, and they're in the blood of almost every person in Western societies!
@FakeSchrodingersCat
@FakeSchrodingersCat 2 года назад
It is probably even easier then pesticides acting like estrogen. Pesticides are poison whose dose is theoretically to small to actively kill larger animals but it is still poison with all the normal side effects like killing things so is it any wonder that something small like sperm might die if exposed to the chemicals in pesticides even after it has been metabolized. Way too much pseudo science and misinformation have grown up around estrogen and testosterones in relation to fertility that it is blamed way more often then it is actually the problem. Sorry the alpha male idiots dosing themselves with testosterone needlessly is a sore point for me especially since elevated testosterone is more likely to lead to infertility then elevated estrogen in an otherwise healthy male.
@haddow777
@haddow777 2 года назад
@@FakeSchrodingersCat I don't think the estrogen is meant to be a major issue in adulthood. I think the science behind why it can have a negative effect of male fertility is from how it effects children growing into adulthood.

Varicoceles are also a cause. Perhaps a lot of men are walking around with undiagnosed and untreated varicoceles. The size of the varicocele does not correlate with (in)fertility: some men with large varicoceles do not have male subfertility; whereas other men with small-grade or subclinical varicoceles have marked male subfertility. Lifestyle factors play a role: a smoker or heavy drinker with a varicocele will have poorer spermatozoa quality than a clean living man with varicocele. Dietary antioxidants from (preferably pesticide-free: organic certified) vegetables and fruits help to protect spermcells from freeradical damage and oxidative stress caused by varicoceles. Thankfully, varicoceles are readily treated by outpatient surgery (microsurgical varicocelectomy or embolisation).

I’m one male who has become effected with low sperm counts. My mother took DES when she was pregnant with me. As a result my right testis failed to develop at all causing the the testis to remain in it early gonad tissue form. In addition the other testis did develop as such but only matured to about half of normal size for an adult male. As an adult I did marry and we even managed to product two children over a protracted time frame so it is posable to have children in such cases. The othe side is this has caused me much pain in the form of corrective surgeries and later in life stage three cancer. This cancer took the form of testicular/ ovarian cancer. My surgeries and treatments have taken a whole life time and even a few years ago I was still getting repairs done to correct damage done in early surgeries. If that were not enough the phycological horror of even having your own mother tell you she wished she had not given birth to you because of all the suffering I’ve had to deal with. The good news is we did manage to have two wonderful children. Both appear totally normal with no side effects related to this. Our daughter has had three children all of who are normal as far as we can see. Twenty four years ago I was given only two months to live because of the advanced cancer but I survived the massive surgeries and chemo. All is not hopeless yet at the same time this is very much could be the face of human sexual developments. The truth is I am intersex making me not male nor female, it is not a state I would ever ask for myself but it is who I am. I’ve managed to hold the love of my wife of forty years and the love of people around me. It is what it is.

One thing that was not mentioned in this video which I am curious about is, wether these studies also take the age factor in to account. Like, 40 years ago the baby boomer gen was about 20 years old a.k.a in their prime fertility. Now they are about 60 years old a.k.a near the end of their fertility. This could have a major impact on the end result of these studies if not accounted for.

@andrewmeeks6938
@andrewmeeks6938 2 года назад
Accuracy and precision aren't synonymous. Just because the counts accurately reflect a general reduction doesn't mean that they weren't taken at the same lull for every participant. Further, considering male hormonal cycles have only been scientifically observed for the last ~50 years there could be other influences on low counts. It is entirely possible that patient unwillingness to admit failed conception attempts could tamper with the sampling of these types of studies. It is far from unreasonable to say, "sperm count is too hit and miss to make a strong correlation between lower overall counts and lower fertility rates." It could also mark a stronger tilt toward viable production instead of bulk production.
@darkzap10
@darkzap10 2 года назад
@@andrewmeeks6938 I think it would be incredibly unlikely that every patients results were taken during a lull, but not absolutely impossible especially if there is a seasonal component to sperm count (is anyone aware of seasonality affecting sperm count?). It's hard to say without knowing the methodology of these studies. It would be nice to have a meta study comparing the existing studies.
@andrewmeeks6938
@andrewmeeks6938 2 года назад
@@darkzap10 actually there's literature on exactly this topic, and there's ancestral, physiological/psychiatric, and birth related trends that indicate a corollary between annual phases and hormone levels. In most mammalian species, menses occurs at an annual schedule rather than monthly. Only primates, bats, elephant shrews, and one spiny mice species really have documented monthly periods. Outside of this females only exhibit fertility according to a "heat" cycle, and males seem to exhibit a similar flux in androgen expression throughout the calendar. Furthermore, most mammals show annual peak and valley trends of progenizing, while other species that have a dormancy cycle dictated by ambient temperature mirror the mammalian fluctuation by dictate of physics. In humans, birth rates peak around the summer months which tends to be the outlier, because we built houses around 20,000 years ago and sex is a great way to keep warm and entertain oneselves. Outside of this though mammalian species tend to give birth in the spring which indicates an evolutionary relation to the benefits of young rearing during the gentler spring and summer months. There are even studies suggesting that other species exhibit signs of Seasonal Affective Disorder in relation to this very real annual fluctuation of hormones. So all things being considered it is very possible that these types of studies just capture data weirdly.

Everyone is recommending the flour trick, but you can also use powdered sugar. Another trick would be to pop your raspberries in the oven for on a low temp liking your drying them, by reducing their water content you not only increase the potency of their flavor but increase their buoyancy considerably by reducing their water weight which makes them heavier than the sugars and fats in dough. This is why many mass produced "fruit" in the dough products use a jelly mediated by flour in place of real fruit.

They said that the average person has 60-80 million sperm, but you need 100 million to qualify as a donor, which is above average. They tested mine at 432 million, which is pretty good. Here's what I do: I eat 100% organic, no pesticides 98% of the time. I've been eating/drinking USDA organic food for 5 years at this point. I only drink Mountain Valley Water, bottled in glass. I avoid anything with chemicals, meaning that I only use the most natural soap and hygiene products, detergent, house cleaning chemicals, sunscreens, etc. I've searched far and wide for the absolute most natural products for each category possible and exclusively use those. I get calcium fluoride toothpaste imported from Europe. I also completely avoid polyester clothing. I make sure I get plenty of Sun everyday and stay active as well. Next pour your batter in thin (1/3 inch) layers and gently drop some powdered berries on each layer before pouring the next. Repeat this recipe frequently to ensure a large sample of data, and enlist friends and family to study the results. There are also similar stories detailing how excessive hot tub use made guys infertile, but after not using hot tubs as often, the men could get their wives pregnant. Except, these stories are actually found in a scientific paper. There are also similar stories of bakers being infertile, changing jobs or even retiring, and then being able to have kids. Reason why is because the frequent heat causes the sack to get too hot to make sperm, but once the frequent heat exposure stops for a few months, sperm can be made again. Some men have even taken advantage of this for contraception which they can then reverse when ready for children. I think this male heat contraception needs more research, as it’s much more promising than the pill ever was imo.

why is it going lower? are we seeing the effects of this yet in population since we have had a 40 year decline in "count" I know a majority of baby decrease is simply wages and younger couples not feeling comfortable bringing an off spring into poverty are we able to seperate that from "infertility decline"

I wonder how much female hormones, like those found in birth control, are affecting the sperm issues. Maybe something to do with water contamination by these hormones is affecting men? Or perhaps the mother is exposed to an elevated amount of these hormones during pregnancy, and that influences it

@@r3d0c I'm not agreeing with them, just a heads up that you encourage insults over sharing sources when you start out by admitting a bias and belittling someone (in your case, using the word "delusional" in the first sentence). It's unnecessarily antagonistic and runs counter to any scientific curiosity. Others may make premature or odd conclusions based on the world around them, but you can sometimes get them to point you to the information that led them down that path and learn something you didn't know before (even if you'd still disagree with then afterwards) I mean, it's not like you're dealing with a flat earther (I hope) Just some well-intentioned advice from someone inquisitive and critical.

There are some chemicals like BPA and PCBs that are appear to your body to be estrogen. They're called xenoestrogens, and exposure to them (e.g. drinking from a plastic water bottle that has BPA) has measurable effects. It is entirely possible that exposure to them could result in lowered sperm count.
