When Robert Redford and Paul Newman appeared alongside each other in the classic 1969 Western film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, they developed a friendship on the set of the film that would last over the remaining decades until Paul’s death in 2008. Although the two became and remained incredibly close friends over the years, they only ever reunited for one film after their initial hit together. Still, they considered each other family.

Robert was a relative unknown when he tested for the part of the Sundance Kid. The studio was hoping for a bigger name star, such as Steve McQueen or Marlon Brando. However, Paul was so impressed by young Robert’s work that he stuck his neck out to ensure that the studio hired him instead. Paul’s instinct prevailed, as the film became a massive success both critically and commercially. As well, Robert appreciated Paul sticking his neck out for him for the rest of his life, and it’s part of why the two bonded so well.
After Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was released, Robert and Paul became Connecticut neighbors. Paul had already lived in the state, and Robert moved out to join him. The two lived less than a mile apart and spent much of their days together drinking beers and smoking cigarettes. Their follow-up feature was 1973’s The Sting, which went on to become an even bigger hit than their first film together.
Since Robert and Paul were such great friends and their first two films together were such massive hits, many have questioned why the two never reunited on the screen after The Sting. Join Facts Verse as we explore the truth about Robert Redford and Paul Newman’s relationship.

In the late 70's, there was a novel called "The Front Runner," about a gay runner, and his coach, and the Montreal Olympics. The novel became a best seller, and there was talk of a film, and they wanted Redford as the runner, and Newman as the coach. I happened to write a theme for the movie I called "Frontrunner." Newman was afraid of public opinion, at the time, so the film was never made. It's now on RU-vid....just piano/vocal. Look for it by Gene Howard Klein, if interested.

In the mid-nineties my girlfriend worked for Redford in the offices of his "Constellation Pictures" offices as his personal secretary. Newman would call frequently and every time she answered the phone, he'd yell "REDFORD!!!!", and of course, after the first time it happened, she knew who it was and would politely say that she'd connect him right away! I believe you got a couple things wrong. I have heard interviews with both actors over the years and I seem to remember Paul was originally hired to be Sundance. When Robert came into the picture it was decided it would be better for the roles to be reversed. Also, while McQueen and Newman were contemporaries they were not really friends. McQueen was the first choice for Butch Cassidy... but his demands became so petty and unreasonable that he was dropped. When they made the Towering Inferno together McQueen actually required he would have the exact same number of lines as Newman. Redford and Newman were so great together it is sad they could never find another project that they both liked.
@mikearchibald744
@mikearchibald744 2 года назад

No, no, no. Steve McQueen was the first person hired for the film, and he was hired to play Butch. Paul was brought in to play Sundance. McQueen dropped out because the studio wanted to give Newman top billing. Joanne Woodward, Newman's wife, is the one who suggested Redford.

nothing great about growing old. But their friendship was a great thing. And so were their movies together.

Cloris Leachman was in BCATSK for a few moments. She was the call girl laying on the bed while Butch stood on the hotel balcony and watched the ineffectual sheriff trying to raise a posse until the bicycle salesman butted in to give a sales pitch.

I would love to see a movie made about their friendship. Hollywood's always pumping out garbage movies it's about time they put out something that has a warm genuine friendship tone

They could both make a scene sizzle, that's for sure. Prior to "A Walk in the Woods," they could never find a script that either of them liked. I do believe "A Walk in the Woods" was definately a film they could've made into a huge hit. They thrived on conflict and humor as actors. Paul was too old by then. I didn't particularly like the script or the acting with Bob and Nick, but the story itself certainly had a lot of possibilities.
