An interesting thing I noticed is that if you switch from "All" to "Classic" Luke drops a bunch. There are a lot of Modern Lukes in there. He's the top Modern character (by a pretty big margin) which makes a lot of sense.

The reason Luke was so low in the beginning is because alot of people had already played enough luke from the betas/demo and everyone wanted to try the newer options. As the game life continued and people got to explore the other characters, they ended up gravitating back to luke like "Wait a minute, Luke was just better!"

I think besides his moveset, people are drawn to Ryu's aesthetic. He's the classic karateka, with a cool looking Gi and persona. Same thing works for Makoto.

3:00 I guess to note on that point. I placed with Marisa low Plat. Only played her for about 2 weeks, still sitting there. Switched to gief and placed similarly but amd current mid diamond. Good chance a lot of those are just placement Alts for people. Should take play time into consideration imo

In Canada east it feels like most of the characters I face in plat 1 are Ken. It's actually kinda annoying because I end up just not knowing any other MUs :-/

Ken was actually my main when SF6 started but I dropped him because I felt like "that guy" after I got to ranked and saw how many Kens there were. I gotta be a little more of an individual than that and I don't want to be playing an OP.

I was hardstuck as Cammy for hundreds of games in Plat 1. I switched to JP and now im in Diamond. I know the system mechanics better now yes, but ive had a way funner and easier time now, S1 FGs you gotta just play the good stuff

Honestly i never played a sf before this and but from trailers ken just looked fun and cool so thats who i picked up to first learn. That being said i dont really feel bad about it because he is fun and cool and story wise is a good character. I am currently trying to figure out some rashid though

Maybe it should be reworded. Rather than JP being “pervasive” , it’s more that when a JP does show up, he’s more “obnoxious” to fight against. So non JP people are louder

I think something big that happened is batch of players being influenced by big streamers on the up and up. I know there were a lot of people who learned how to play characters at high levels to support their favorite Vtubers. A lot of the content creators also chose characters that were great in Modern, and Luke is at the top of that tier list, meanwhile, for content creator picks, JP is close to the bottom because of how unusual he is. The one popular content creator that had a powerful JP, Sasatikk, dropped him for Jaime, lol Also, for sure people choose Ken because he has a dope ass design and it just so happens that he's also very strong.

I 100% think it's the latter situation where it's people are getting stuck on certain characters. I have something like 1400-1500 games as Jamie and have been stuck in gold the closest I ever got to plat was being 1 game off but then I dropped a bunch of games. Meanwhile I have Guile, Rashid, Dhalsim, Lily, Zangief and maybe a few others at Platinum and I probably don't have 1000 games with all of those characters combined. Some characters are able to get higher ranks just because lower ranks struggle against that character. If you play Modern Gief you can get to platinum extremely easily just by using SPD and Level 3. Once you get there then people actually know how to play against that and you'll have to incorporate other moves. Guile all you need to do to get to plat is be willing to spam sonic booms and flash kicks because before plat struggle to walk down projectile spam and will jump to try to get over projectiles which you then flash kick and they're back at full screen. Dhalsim is much of the same where once you learn to fill up the screen with projectiles and limbs a high amount of players before plat just completely crumble under. Modern Lily is easy as long as your opponent doesn't realize they can drive impact your heavy assist combo which gets you a stock then either combo into or throw out raw EX or non condor spire and if it's blocked follow it up with EX Command Grab which will leave you at a distance that allows you to get another stock and rinse and repeat, if they get wise and start jumping the grab then you can DP them which again gives you time to get another stock. Characters that don't really have a way to "cheese" their way to plat art going to end up getting stuck in that lower category. While there are a few gimmicks you can pull off with characters like Jamie most of it is extremely unsafe so you need to actually fundamentally play well to break into those "higher" ranks. I also feel like there will be the opposite that holds true too though, like bad players who are bad and they think that playing top tier characters will be able to get them to a higher rank, that's gotta be why Luke is such a popular character, I cannot imagine that it's because of his design he is such a bland character. People are still so rabid over JP it's crazy, like I'd probably hate him more if I fought him as much as Ken, Luke, Cammy or DeeJay but I fight him so little that I barely know the match up, I feel like I fight more Dhalsims and I find him more annoying

I just started playing ranked and the only characters I fight are Ken, Cammy and Modern Juri.

I feel like this is a really good example of why we cant wait for a year between patches. Looking at the usage rates since release its been the same about 7 characters at the top. For as much as people say the meta is constantly changing and new tech is always being found it hasnt changed the fact that with so many people playing we can reach the meta consensus so much quicker. Outside of manon and honda the rest of early tier lists would still be accurate

I see why JP is not up there. He is good but overall he gets boring to play compared to the rest of the cast.

As a guile main I know JP is my worst match up and gief is my best I’ve yet to lose to a gief in platinum. Once I learned the JP match up and realized he’s -2 on pierce and my fwd dash is faster than he can recover I can bum rush him with back fist and get in on offense. For any guile mains out here take note. JP IS -2 ON BLOCKED PIERCE EXEPT OD PIERCE. Use your superior mid range boom pokes and bum rush him to the corner. You’ll win 90% of the time.

Yeah growing up my brother just never could and never wanted to play chargers. I could always just do either or. Just depends if I like the character or not. Dee Jay is a hybrid in this game, so I didn’t even really think about it until now.

I’m curious how many are active players. People might do Ken first because he’s fun and feels good. But start branching out to others. And their dusty Ken will still be in those charts

Ngl kinda glad that my boi Luke has risen in the usage rankings, I remember specifically that he was consider low tier before the game was released but after a while players are slowly gradually gotten better with him overtime. Granted is not the same numbers as how Ken is doing but is still high up next to Ryu overall. I'm sure that when ever time has pass and other dlc characters like Akuma comes out he will slowly decline for how popular and brain dead broken he will be.

in canada west there a lot of ken and ryu 2 dee jay chun li a least in my ranked diamond 2 i rarely see jp or manon honda too sometimes 1 or 2 one of those characters depends on the day but i haven.t seen them in a awhile that fine i will get to master slowly with my main honda after that marisa is next thinking about it.

In my personal experience as a mid-Plat player who just started the game last month, the JPs I fight in ranked definitely feel like they've been carried somewhat by his zoning tools. I had no idea how to get in on him at first, but now that ai do I find the JPs universally terrible at neutral.

the closer we get to the balance patch the more people will stop using their mains specially all the ken's and JP's people's loyalty to a character changes really fast when they get nerfed its annoying that the best players only uses the op characters only a few pass with "weaker" characters

there isnt enough increase in marisa's on that list compared to what i see in ranked lmao. every session feels like im running the marisa gauntlet. its good practice tho so im not complaining (too much lol)

Capcom hung Lily out to dry with the lack of balance changes. She was slammed as being the worst character in the game in week 1 and while she's not the worst her reputation has stuck with the playerbase. Hopefully they give her the qol changes and defensive buffs she needs as she's one of the worst victims of the games input gremlins. Her defensive options in the corner are pathetic, Her offense isn't nearly strong enough to justify being that vulnerable.

JP is understandsble because as busted as he is, he isnt a new player friendly character. You need at leeeeast very basic neuch and learn some setups to survive in the mid ranks because even lower ranks know how to get in with neutrals skips and fck you into the mud and JP can be very vulnerable to rushdown if you dont know what you are doing. i picked up a side JP once I had a more solid foundation and understanding of the game and spent some hours practicing setups and frame data because when I first picked up the character I was overwhelmed by how much stuff you have to learn.

The ranks need to be reset honestly. Like you can get to platinum with a negative winrate because if you get a couple of wins in a row the game just shiwers you with LP and god help you if you beat soneone higher rank than you, literal hundreds of points. This makes ranked feel useless and just cosmetic

As a Kim main it’s a little surprising she’s so low. I know she’s not strong but I at least thought she was popular. She was used more than Ken in the beta. Those pre launch nerfs really dumpstered her. Hard to see my main is so mediocre. Doesn’t even get credit for being the worst she’s just seen as meh which hurts more.

Why is Ken, the easiest character to use and arguably the best character in the game atm for too many reasons, so surprising to see in first place?

I feel like they should have done the breakdown rookie and iron, bronze-plat, and diamond and master. There’s a huge skill gap between plat and diamond.

For me, I don't like charge because it feels like the mechanic keeps changing with how much leniency you get. I could play charge in SF4, I most certainly could not play charge in SF5 and I feel like I'm having an aneurysm trying to play charge in SF6.

at the end, about charged characters, pretty much hit the nail on the head with me. I never played em and I don't really like that style. Always hard passed on any characters with charged inputs.
