When I was learning Spanish in high school I was so excited about Spanish that I wanted to become a Spanish teacher. I discussed it with the guidance counselor and he told me that I could not teach in high school or the lower grades. When I got to college I majored in Spanish and still wanted to become a teacher at the college level. Then I heard “Publish or Perish”. That absolutely terrified me. Then one day a group of students were sitting around in a break room. Everybody was telling what their plans were and when I said that I wanted to teach Spanish a girl at the other end of the table almost yelled at me, “YOU’LL never teach!” She was right. A week from today I will be 77 years old so I am way too old now and I never took any classes for learning how to teach. I have thought of teaching English to Spanish speakers but it was just not meant to be. I could never teach children anyway. I would have to teach adults if I were to teach anybody but that is never going to happen either. I have always wanted to live or at least spend some time in Spain but I have never we travelled in my life. It’s too late now.

I may be biased here but your vocabulary is expanding in both languages it seems like. I just subscribed to your account. Great explanation of the public and private school systems in Spain.

I applaud you for your English Teacher in Spain🎉 My family is Spanish South American Jewish in Laguna Niguel Calif, I made my adult university & working life in Miami Florida then moving up to N Virginia for Law School & US Govt jobs. I always loved San Diego growing up abd spent 6 months in Del Mar until I got my passport again. Being on the East Coast, it was refreshing to visit beautiful San Diego, but Spain is home & I applaud you and your love for Spain and teaching.

Maddie, en un próximo viaje a España, deberías acercarte al norte y hacer ese "Camino de las Estrellas" que haría que no volvieses a mirar el mundo de la misma manera. Un saludo desde esa esquina verde, desde ese Finisterre de pereginación.

Hi Maddie. Great video. I think l am going have to watch it at least 2 or 3 times because l have a broken arm and trying to write down notes is very hard, plus you speak so quickly. I am from Australia and l am 51. I do not have a degree just a TEFL Certificate however l can do the degree from one of the Universities in Melbourne online. Will they favour younger people over me because of my age? I prefer to teach children. In Australia you must pass what is called "Working with children check" So basically the police will do a check on you to see whether or not your fit to work with children. Also my understanding by my research is a good wage is between 800 to 1300 Spanish money. Sorry l don't know whether they use the Euro. Anyway l will watch it again. If you could find some time to answer these questions would really appreciate it Cheers from Melbourne Australia

Why did you personally return to the states? I’m a second year aux in Madrid with BEDA and contemplating a 3rd…I absolutely love the city and enjoy the teaching aspect as well but for me it’s family/money/age holding me back (I’m in my 30s)

What did you think of the interview process at Meddeas? I found it very strange. The questions they asked me were: Name 3 things do you not like about people? What one of those 3 things do you see in yourself? What would make you not enjoy the program? I was never accepted in the end and they never reached back to me. My application was very Madrid focused so that could be why I wasn’t accepted. This year I am applying through Conversa so my fingers are crossed🤞

My plan is to teach ESL to Spanish business owners. Also communication and negotiation skills. What are your thoughts?
@LewisGreenaway
@LewisGreenaway 2 месяца назад
Good idea, I taught business professionals in Barcelona. There needs are not being met by most language academies in the area. I'd say don't limit yourself to business owners, a lot of sales folk, doctors and office workers want fine tuned lessons. I've been posting some videos on teaching in Spain :)

When you work as a teacher in Spain specifically usually you are required to take a class paid for by the program so that you can be under a student visa, rather than work

Hi ! Thank you for sharing your experience. It's something that I've recently become interested in so I appreciate your insight. If it isn't too much trouble I just have a few questions. 1) Did you graduate and then go teach? Because you said how it's a student visa so I was just a little confused aha. 2) If I don't do a degree in Spanish, but still learn basic levels of conversation, would I be able to get into these programs? 🤍
@LewisGreenaway
@LewisGreenaway 2 месяца назад
Hi Olivia, most of these programs are for studying students or recent graduates. As long as you have a BA you've got a good chance. The Spanish language requirement is not taken that seriously for most language assistant programs, basic self-taught Spanish will likely be just fine. Hope that helps, I have a few videos on the topic :)
