Of all the battles that took place in the British Isles down through the ages, the war cries of the Battle of Bannockburn ring among the loudest. Fought in 1314 between the King of Scotland, Robert I, or Robert the Bruce as he is more commonly known, and King Edward II of England, the battle is one of the most iconic in history. To understand the Battle of Bannockburn however, we need to understand the broader struggle that it took place within: namely, the First Scottish War of Independence, which lasted from 1296 to 1328.
The First Scottish War of Independence grew out of a succession crisis, after Alexander III of Scotland died in 1286, followed by his heir, Margaret, Maid of Norway, dying in 1290. This vacuum of power sparked a contest for the crown between John Balliol and Robert Bruce, the grandfather of the more famous Robert the Bruce who fought at Bannockburn. This dispute resulted in King Edward I, who ruled England from 1273 to 1307, stepping in to mediate, awarding Balliol the crown in 1292. The crafty English King exploited this appointment however, frequently meddling in Scottish affairs. In 1295, the Scottish nobility, sick of Balliol’s weak leadership and failure to maintain Scotland’s independence, signed the Auld Alliance with France, the arch enemy of England.
Edward’s response was to invade Scotland, which began when English forces sacked the important Scottish border-town of Berwick, in 1296. In response to Edward’s invasion, a resistance movement led by William Wallace and Andrew de Moray formed, with this movement going on to win important battles, including at Stirling Bridge in 1297. However, the loss at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298 and further defeats resulted in England controlling large parts of Scotland, including taking control of Stirling Castle between 1303 and 1304. Resistance to English rule renewed when Robert the Bruce was crowned King of Scotland in 1306.
By May, King Edward II was marching an army of around 13,000 men to Stirling Castle, the largest army to ever invade Scotland up until that point. The battle that ensued is one of the most famous in Scottish history, although little written sources exist detailing it (Ditchburn and MacDonald, 2014: 162). The Battle of Bannockburn took place between the 23rd and 24th of June, 1314, and was likely fought on ground to the south of Stirling Castle; ground which had been carefully chosen by Bruce. The Bannock and Pelstream burns offered natural barriers to the east, and Bruce’s forces dug concealed pits to impede the charging English cavalry.
The epic opening exchange of the battle set the tone for the entire episode. Mounted on a horse, Bruce was at the front of his troops. An English knight, Henry de Bohun, spotted the Scottish King, and charged his horse towards Bruce leading with his lance. Just as the English knight reached Bruce, the Scot slipped the lance by twisting his mount of to the side, instantly propelling himself back up and smashing his axe through the English warriors skull, killing his instantly. Energised, the Scottish fighters forced Edward’s cavalry to withdraw.

The Union of Scotland and England was planned from before David 1st came home from the English Court with his Gang of Norman Heavies and RC Priests to Normanise Scotland and reduce Scots to a nation of serfs and that is the root of Scotland's problems today. The Union of 1707 was just the Norman Lairds reuniting with their Southern cousins.

You might have mentioned more about Randolph's stand against the English cavalry on the first day which set the scene for the next day. Also the bickering within the English camp over who should lead the charge which led to Gloucester taking the hump and riding straight to his death . The importance of the foot soldiers taking the fight forward against cavalry and infantry had never been heard of, and it was the carnage of the large English force being bottlenecked trying to re-cross the Bannickburn in panic that killed more English than the Scots.

Great vid Thank you! One thing I am always trying work out is the Balliol thing. He always seems to take a bad rap for some reason but I have seen a lot of reports that although Edward may have thought he would be a puppet Balliol didn’t have it and resisted on more than one occasion , although unsuccessfull. The other proof of Balliol being a patriot was William Wallace and Murray were fighting for his claim and to return him to the throne. I don’t think they would’ve stuck their necks out for him if he wasn’t worthy. Now no one is taking anything from the Bruce. At the end of the day he got it done at low odds of success but I feel because the way it played out Bruce is always portrayed the good and Balliol the bad. The Balliols may have actually had the better legal claim to the throne from what I have seen as well. What happened at the altar with Comyn will always be a great mystery too. Was it the way the film the “outlaw king” portrayed it or was it more of an ambush to take Comyn out?? I often wondered why it didn’t turn into a battle because surely Comyn would’ve went there with a platoon as well right?
@celtichistorydecoded

Thanks for the comment Jason, you make a lot of excellent points. You're right, there must be more to the story of Balliol, I might need to try and explore that in a future video, because, you as say, why would Wallace etc. back him if he had nothing about him. The Comyn thing is a little strange also, but perhaps Bruce laid a good trap for him. Cheers for the thought-provoking comment.

In the last year, I've found out that I'm descended from Robert the Bruce on my father's side. Probably a lot of my fellow Scots are. I have a line in my tree from Thankful Haynes to the Stewarts to the Bruce's. I am descended from Robert the Bruce and his first wife, Isabella of Mar. The English warrior that he killed on the day before the battle is also a ancestor of mine, Henry de Bohun, (I found out my families descended from both Scottish and English royalty, maybe THAT'S why I'm always mad at myself!!) and yes, Longshanks is also an ancestor of mine in another line of that family. Incredibly surprised and quite frankly, shocked!! And very proud!! Thanks for the video, very well done and interesting!!

Who were the English that keeps getting a mention? Anglo French/Norman people who were Kings of England not really English Kings, same as the 100 years war between England and France was really the king of England fighting various wars to protect their lands in France. Wasn't until 1485 that the last Plantagenet died at Bosworth Field that the Anglo/ Norman rule ended. Scots love to remember Bannockburn and have built a useful visitors centre, compare that with Flodden where the invading Scots got hammered how many visit that battlefield.? Ain't history wonderful
