Here's are my memories of the classic TV sitcom "Laverne and Shirley" that ran on ABC-TV for 8 seasons. I also talk about the so-called feud between actors, Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams. Was it real? I'll let you be the judge!

I love your channel. You are always nice and soft-spoken, and seem to try to find the good in everything. In a time when the world around us appears to be getting harsh and uncaring, it's nice to find a place to go and relax and remember. One of the greatest unsolved mysteries of this show: the Case of Ed Marinaro. He shows up in the last show of the fifth season as Laverne's cousin from Italy, setting him up as a new cast member. The following season, Italian cousin has disappeared as L&S decide to move to California, where they acquire a new landlord played by Ed Marinaro, whose character Sonny is shaped to be Laverne's new love interest. Just as things get serious between the two, Sonny disappears without a trace or a mention. Marinaro went over to NBC for his role on Hill Street Blues, but the whole thing was handled so sloppily at L&S. It's like the producers started to disregard the intelligence of the viewers.

I remember Penny Marshall, in a later interview, defending Cindy Williams’ position. The discussion was about the “feud” which didn’t really seem like a feud when Marshall described it, but more like an awkward situation...especially for Williams. Gary Marshall, Lowell Ganz, and Mark Rothman were already a hugely successful director/producer/writing team with Happy Days fame under their belt. Of course, Penny Marshall was Gary’s sisters, so it was almost like she was an instant part of that group...and then in come Cindy Williams, who, from the beginning, seemed like the outsider. Now this was Marshall explaining how the entire thing “appeared” for someone like Cindy, who though billed as an equal star in the show, may have felt she was expected to help Marshall/Ganz/Rothman launch Penny into Fonzie-level stardom. It’s been years since I saw that interview, so I don’t remember every detail about what Marshall said - only that she could see how the whole thing looked to Williams....and that that certainly couldn’t have helped the situation of two equally-billed stars, when it seemed all the people involved were Penny’s people. Add to that the fact that taping and rehearsals were always a nightmare....so many times getting it done only at the last minute...never going home on time, while simultaneously always watching the Happy Days crew leaving set at a respectable time each day, because the rhythm was so tried and true there that it was easy for them to wrap-up on time.

Great tribute. There is a clue to the jealousy and competition between Penny and Cindy right from the beginning. Notice on the opening credits that both Penny and Cindy come crashing through the main door and closet door together. A bit odd, no? Who comes crashing out of a closet door while colliding with someone coming in the front door? They fought over who was going to be introduced first so the network found this clever way to have both credited at the same time. Also if you listen to Penny's interviews of the last 10 years she accredits the problems on the set with Cindy's husband who she thought was controlling her and the show. She felt Cindy's husband was putting her up to this nonsense. Yes they did make up after the show.

Corey Thorne Lol I had forgotten about Boo-boo kitty til I read this comment. Didn’t Ed Begley Jr play Shirley’s kid brother. I think the story of Boo-Boo Kitty was. That when her kid brother was brought home from the hospital. They gave her Boo-Boo Kitty just to show her she was still special. But Shirley after Laverne mentioned how weird it was that everyone in her family was blonde but Shirley had dark hair. Shirley thought she was adopted. And Shirley’s mother had to come show Shirley her birth certificate to show her she was really part of the family.

So Penny at the very beginning of Laverne & Shirley, which premiered on January 27, 1976 would’ve been about 32 years of age, because her birthday was October 15, 1943. Cindy Williams at the start of Laverne & Shirley on January 27, 1976 actually was 28 years old because her birthday was August 22, 1947. In the series storyline, both Laverne & Shirley would’ve been in their early 20s

I loved this show so much! I had just become a Happy Days fan with the '75 season, and the first season of L&S was a little raunchy to appeal to new adults like me, who was 19 when it premiered in early '76. Garry Marshall, Penny's brother, was the best sitcom producer of the '70s and '80s, because he knew how to execute a formula like no one else. The ratings of L&S and many ABC shows suffered after the '79 scheduling debacle, but with the time jump move to LA it became a more introspective show, still fun but more about 2 women maturing together. The brighter colors hurt my eyes, lol, but Garry Marshall evolved that show to perfection! Super clip, Dave!

@@jdsundstrom Just ran back because I forgot to mention the album! I was listening to a lot of older music in '77 what with the pop music landscape changing. L&S Sings was a retro-styled album that appealed to me. The singing was forgivable in that it was like a take-off on early '60s girl groups. A well-produced effort with an original song or two. Check out "Five Years On", co-written by Michael McKean, who was Lenny in L&S but later in, well you know the movie.

LOVED Laverne and Shirley as a teen in the ‘70’s! It was hilarious when they got into fights and they did the slap fighting thing! 😆😆 Also on the show when they were mad at each other, they would scream out each other’s personal secrets out the window! 😁😁 When the show moved forward in time to the mid ‘60’s, I felt it “lost something”. Maybe the innocence of the show was gone.....pretty much sums it up for that era as the mid ‘60’s culturally was VERY different from the late ‘50’s/early ‘60’s.

I was only 9 when the show started airing. I loved the show! I read that David Landers and Cindy Williams dated for 3 years while the show aired. I liked that Lenny and Sqwiggy had their own bumper music when they were in trouble! They were so funny. Lenny had a touching crush on Laverne. I liked the episode where Lenny asked Laverne to marry him because she thought she was pregnant. She said you lost huh? And he said no, I won. Just wonderful. It sounded like Cindy Williams sung the ending theme song to me. I thought she did! I had their board game as well. I wish I still had it now. To me, they were more like the Cagney and Lacey of comedy. (I know they were first). The theme of opposites attract working together and were friends was great.

I had her album (L&S's too, for that matter!), but inasmuch as the radio station I was jocking for at the time was "FM progressive rock" or AOR, we never player her. But, artists like her and the Rembrandts (performers of the "Friends" theme) often go woefully overlooked.
