A lot of questions on the subject of UPS training, (or lack thereof) and also about people quitting within the first two weeks. And the truth is that the situation was as bad as all the rumors you've heard...

After a long talk and a walk around (lasting 2 hours) they told me they would call me for my first shift. I'm not so sure about that. In the Primary Sort, we risk packages over 30lbs falling off belts and causing bodily injury. we're required to sort at an 1100pph pace, giving only 3 seconds to read the label (which isn't always facing up) , lift/carry/lower the package, and place it on the belt, which leaves little room for "hand to surface" handling without more than a year's experience in the position. The sort is often changing (practically arbitrarily), and much of the finer points of sorting such as Air Services and "bypass bags" are not covered during on the job training. Also, Sorters dont have much control over the pace, beyond stopping the unloader (who may or may not even listen). Not only are sorters at the mercy of the unloaders, the outbound can't always keep up with the sorters, and we have to stack the stopped belt in the aisle, taking time away from the sort both to stack without compromising egress or risking missorts due to there being belts and chutes at floor level, with little to stop errant packages from falling on and being missorted. Not to mention, that sort suffers more abuse by the floor manager, than anywhere else, including Small Sort, who needs to close off it's intake ah hour or so before downtime because it can't keep pace with the primary. Finally, that 1 measly extra dollar per hour that comes with the position being classed as "skilled" doesn't make up for the shit I've already mentioned, or that the job seems to require babysitting the unloader from 30+ feet away, depending on depth of load and length of trailer. Oh, and our take home pay can often be less than the "unskilled" unloaders, because most of us don't get to work past the Unload's down time, sometimes we start getting downsized before the unload even starts going down.
@SimpleManGuitars1973
@SimpleManGuitars1973 7 лет назад
Cover driving is WAY worse because you get sent out in the blind constantly and have to try and find all the crap behind your bulkhead that the 18 year old kid just put wherever. I honestly think preloaders would be MUCH better if they would make preloaders go on a route with a driver whose package car they've loaded and see how bad load quality can totally screw somebody's day up. That would go a long way toward giving preloaders an appreciation for how it really helps us if they do their best. I know they are in there getting screwed every day too though.
@RageTVHTX

I worked preload for the last 8 months, it sucks, the hours suck (1am to about 9:30am), its a HOT warehouse, the fans do nothing, you bust your ass for 11 bucks an hour and you have to be done before the drivers have to leave no matter how many pieces you have on each truck. I loaded 4 trucks and they each had no less than 170 pieces a day. one of them had nearly 500 daily. Tried out to be a driver and they don't make that easy either.

Amen brother.. I’m a new hire, it is stressful as hell. The deadline for air packages makes it so you start off in a good rush to meet the deadline. Being a cover driver in a new area without GPS can be overwhelming at times. Also, simply being responsible for a 12,000lb vehicle in areas with heavy traffic (especially pedestrians & cyclists) adds to the already high stress level. You’re essentially in charge of a giant mobile weapon that can take a pedestrian’s life just as easy as a firearm. This job definitely requires a tough mindset, you have to be able to manage stress and a little fear every now and then.

When you factor in overtime pay, I make well over 100k+/year driving for UPS. The health care/benefits are some of the best in American business. Throw in that 401 k and pension when you retire, it's a fantastic company to work for if you tough it out through the hub/package handler days. Something tells me, there are not going to be as many job openings for alarm installers as there will be for Delivery Drivers, so UPS still gives you a higher percent chance of making a six figure income.

Tyrone Higginbottom anyone on a belt that isn’t properly locked out is a dismal offense that the union can’t and won’t fight. The poster claims that he wasn’t given the proper basic training the lifting rules the safety walking rules the lock out safety rules the driving rules the HazMat training the leaking package training. I had to take the training every year because I worked in a Package Center Hub and Air gateway even though I was in IT or in Package Center operations. I use to have to setup training rooms in the smaller centers at yearly training time. I had to have two hours training minimum every week for the ten years I worked with the Technology Support Group(TSG) plus a full day of training every six months after the employee relations index survey results were reviewed a typical 12 hour day. He claims that he was told to come in early and do his training on his time no way would a supervisor tell someone that you were not on the clock for training. in my time in operations I submitted the centers timecards for both drivers and insiders for over two years we were still on paper timecards that had to be faxed to the district office then the digital timecards had to be transmitted the last thing I did after I sent the DIAD delivery data and setup the next delivery day. The guy complains about the supervisors and managers being hard asses so what I have been in public service since leaving big brown and management is no different and I worked at GM before big brown not much different there as a computer programmer and mainframe computer operator you have deadlines to meet and thousands of employees worked or stood around being paid for nothing. At the air gateway the jets could not takeoff or a pilot would not even do a preflight unless my computers were able to print the FAA required documents if a flight was delayed for anything other than weather or a mechanical all late takeoffs had to be reported to the FAA and UPS flight operations and UPS corporate. I had a few times that I had to jump through hoops to get the system or a printer back online to meet the 9:30pm takeoff while having to guarantee to the WorldPort flight operations manager that the aircraft would be in the air by the departure time then write a memo explaining everything that had to go to the TSG manager the district and regional managers the Flight operations manager and corporate in Atlanta. The poor snowflake he had to deal with a hard ass supervisor he never would have survived dealing with corporate management

Pipe welding is easy to me but i sure as hell know it isn't easy for everyone.

A few years back when I lived in United States I work for Walmart and they pretty much the same thing I was supposed to take a test for material safety data sheets the test was never completed my first day there I wasn't trained they literally threw me out onto the floor and told me to stock the shelves. Later that month they tried to give me a write-up for not completing my safety task that may I remind you they never told me I had to do. After the first two months of working at Walmart I ended up quitting I couldn't demoralize myself working for them Walmart is completely disorganized the managers don't communicate it was basically a six ring circus and anything goes as long as the job gets done.

I started up with ups thinking this is a free gym. i go workout for about 5-7 hours daily while getting paid $14 an hr. And my wife and 2 kids gets taken care of whenever they need the health provider. And now i am making OVER $30 an hour and can afford a house and 3 cars just only myself is the income. This company is a future career and not a present. To start you need to be able to adjust yourself to learn the safety yourself and do your own way and just follow a basic rules. And be smart about everything surroundings. The example is al those people who made top rate paid and almost retired. :-)

I went to some little hiring fair they were doing, watched them interview some guy for 30 minutes (hired on spot) and then the lady talked to me for like 10 minutes, handed me a card and told me they would call me in a few days (such and such will call)....never heard from them again. It was like 90 degrees out, I was wearing a makeshift suit and had all kinds of resume and paperwork with me and those mofo's wasted my time. Never went to any kind of tour or anything. That part about copying the answers on them multiple test was also taught on most companies I work with too. They say don't take too long with the test, if you don't know it, just pick an answer cause at the the end of the test it'll tell you the right answer anyways and from there just copy it, retest and replace the wrong answer with the right answer. It happens with most companies I work with too. Of course I didn't do what they ask cause I already know most of the answer but then they wouldn't allow me to go back to work unless I answer all of them correctly.

@@CoffeeTalkLive then you should STRONGLY consider where you spend your money and buy things from, because like it or not nearly every large company (Amazon, Walmart, Starbucks, Target, etc) all do this in training. Make you watch a video, then you all go over the answers and they tell you what the correct answer is. I can't count how many companies I've done orientation for do this. Corporate America...and I say that as a whole...not UPS, not Walmart, not any SINGLE company, but pretty much every large, Nationwide if not globally recognized company that hires people in groups, not a mom and pop company hiring one maybe two people, but a large company...they ALL DO IT. I've worked at call centers where they hired groups of 40 people at a time. For accounts with Verizon, Sears, Sprint... They all do it. Im currently a truck driver and every large carrier I've worked for, does this. Again they hire large groups of people. The idea is that the bad ones will weed themselves out and the smart ones will figure it out and stay. When a company is hiring 40 or more people at a time in an orientation group they really don't have the time to cherry pick people out of a large group. That's exactly what has happened EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. The group slowly starts to fall off after a couple months... A year later there's maybe two of you left from your hiring group. Retail stores, call centers, trucking companies. Every one does it. I hate to sound mean and don't mean to, but this is how Corporate America as a WHOLE operates so get used to it. We all got to work. Just be smarter than the guy next to you.
