Think about it 3-5k In most cases that covers food housing and a lifetime of education for 2 months. A week long “astronaut” camp will cost you around 1k with little to anything being learned. Most corps are non profit. the only thing DCI makes profit on is merchandise and it’s fees for a group to appear and preform

For real, Santa Clara paid 200k for “crystal” props last year, including transportation,. They were floating platforms that meant nothing and added nothing to the meaningless theme of “Buddhism, In General”. The truth is, designers are getting kickbacks for prop construction, design, and even flag orders.

I mastered the Ancient Snare Drum. When I started out, my expenses ere minimal: a home made uniform, a tricorn, music, drumsticks and a practice pad. I was able to bum rides to practices and events. I, as a teen, could afford this activity using my own money to cover expenses. We paid for a fife and drum instructors (neither instructor was regarded as a master of the art--and never attained that rank and that had to do with behavior / ethical issues.) The instructors were supervised by a drum master (the rank I would eventually hold). My fife and drum corps paid for itself by marching in parades. Our drums were loaned to us by the fire department, in exchange for us providing music for them. The fire department also gave us practice space. When I mastered my instrument, I commissioned a snare drum, appropriate for someone with my skill as a drummer, from a master dry cooper (who is in the same 'family' I'm in). My master had taught percussion at SCV. He thought SCVs rules were way too strict and did not allow a teen to have a life outside of SCV.

Not to mention his alimony payments to Mrs. DCI who is now doing the ol' Z-pull with GH.

As someone who is an alumni, I understand this is satirical. But the true founders of DCI were directors of the following corps in 1971. The founding Director of DCI was Don Pesone. So get your facts right youngster. Blue Stars, 27th Lancers, Anaheim Kingsmen, The Cavaliers, Blessed Sacrament Argonne Rebels, Madison Scouts, Blue Rock, De La Salle Oaklands, Santa Clara Vanguard, Boston Crusaders, Troopers, Garfield Cadets

Bro this is so true. One of my friends from the Blue Devils met Mr. DCI himself, and when he asked for a discounted ticket so i could afford to watch it, he said, "Nah, that 5 grand he's paying me is for my food next week."

I find it strange that anyone would pay to play in the first place. How many tunes do you learn, 6 or 7. And then you play them all summer. That's not an education. Are you learning how to sight read music? Are you getting individual lessons from the pros? Can you play in tune? Do you learn how to 'hide' your breathing and shape the phrases? Can you play softly with a good core to the sound? Can you play loudly with a full, unstrained sound? Do they teach you how to use your breath effectively and efficiently? Is the performance and the winning more important that learning your craft?
