I was a little white girl listening to Brandy, Monica, and Aaliyah. I was also an outcast at my school because of it. I remember everyone listening to Nirvana and the school’s cheerleading squad even doing cheer dances or routines to that music. I’ll never forget me and the only black girl in school who took pity on me enough to let me hang with her and her family. We were called Oreo twins. Jokes on our bullies. I’m still friends with her to this day after bonding over music and cinema. Thanks to social media we know our hardcore racist bullies ended up being nothing. Thank you to Brandy, Monica, Aaliyah, Whitney for shaping me. Even though my friend and I are closer than sisters, she also made me understand I’ll never really truly understand her and her family’s plight. I was only a part of it.

This video was VERY informative. I used to always wonder about the details behind that collaboration. They are two very good singers and they both deserve to be recognized as such.

I was a teenager in the 90’s and from what I remember it was all about Alliyah and then later Brandy came out. The only song of Monica’s I remember back then playing was before you walk out my life. Everybody wanted to be Alliyah or Brandy.
