The Truth Behind Brazil's FPS Dominance

When you think of dominant regions in esports, there are a few that instantly come to mind: Korea, Denmark, China.
But while some of the wealthiest nations in the world jockeyed for power, another country was hard at work, trying to grow.
Brazilian FPS players took matters into their own hands, and with almost no money or support, created one of the most passionate communities and some of the greatest players the world has ever seen. From CS:GO to Rainbow Six: Siege, Brazil is everywhere.
The rise of Brazil is one of the most incredible stories in esports - they did it all on their own, and despite some ups and downs, they’re not done yet.

It's not entirely true we don't have internet access in Brazil. Most people have but not exactly high speed. Many people have a PC or notebook, but not for gaming purposes. What people have here is passion on what they do. I grew up playing videogames usually at a friend's house. Only as an young adult making my own money I was able to have a PC with a dedicated GPU. It wasn't state of the art hardware but I had fun playing when I was back from college.
@gw4yn

Yeah that part about internet access being rare is outright inaccurate. What we lack is hardware capable of running modern games at a competitive performance level at an affordable price. I’ve got nothing but respect for the Brazilian players! It’s the group of psycho fans online that people have an issue with, sadly. Sending death threats and “demanding respect” when they show none to other teams is a bit gross, and ruins the reputation for the majority of Brazilian fans who are not like that. It’s a sad situation :(

former cs 1.6 player here. I've never even heard the name Fallen by the time I've played. the cs 1.6 scene was VERY big in Brazil with 3 teams: GC, g3x and Mibr. Kiko and Cogu were the most successful players but a lot of guys like fnx, btt, pava and Gaulês, who became the succesful streamer later, were among players that everyone knew. this is not to demean Fallen in any manner. just goes to show that there was a lot going before him. Classic Mibr even won an international tournment once (eswc I guess) but in Brazil it was known that despite how ignored most guys got by europeans, a guy like Cogu was among the best, if he wasn't the best awper in the world! a guy like Pava was among the best, if wasn't the best Usp shooter in the world aswell. we really guessed what it would be like if we could practice daily not with 50/60 ping, but could, as swedes, finns etc. play with a lan-ping at home. I guess teams like liquid and Furia showed us that we were right to guess.

legend was that there was a player in that Mibr who seemed a little worse than everyone else who was none but the son of the owner of the team Mibr. he owned the biggest servers company around Rio in a time there weren't many local servers' companies. as he paid everyone's sallaries, he had to play hahahhaha out of curiosity, as other legend goes, the highest paid was Cogu, who earned around 6 minimum wages of Brazil. something like an average civil engineer would earn at the time. as it wasn't really profitable and was still seen as a kid's play, many amazing players left. Cogu even tried to play football professionally - in Qatar!!! hahahhaha it may be a reality shock for the youngsters out there to think merely less than 20 years ago, the very best player of his generation left the game to try playing soccer in a country that is probably among the worst of the world - maybe because he dreamt about it but also maybe he would earn more. fnx was already on the spotlight for his work with mainly GC and thanks God kept up the hard work to represent the CS from that era in CS:GO.

Thank you for making this video! For some reason, Brazil is very looked down upon in the Esports community, every single Brazilian can tell you that they have already suffered from racism and prejudice in the Esports landscape, and that can be really demotivating to any future Br esports athlete, so it's very nice to see someone actually recognizing Brazil's achievements

Thank you for the narration and positive message. Even though I was completely unaware of these developments in my own country, it still brought me some joy and pride in my countrymen to come to know of them, and I am sure a great deal of it is due to the top tier narration of the events, and especially the message at the end. Thank you very much! Sorry for my previous, derailing, comment. It is relatively tainted by politics, even though the political part of it is somewhat easy to avoid and ignore due to the TL; DR. Since the previous one is very much soured, I wanted to make another one for a more positive message.

I love that every time someone talks about Brazil they have to show some favelas. Also the slums are less than 10% of the country's population not 90% as the media portrait and btw internet connection is quite widespread. Also, don't forget that we won a major in 2006 with mibr. They were way more important than SK/LG era.

Thanks for the video, is rare to Brazil be recognized by big english speaking channels. But again Brazil being roasted by mislead information and stereotypes like the “Access to internet and computers is rare” which is false, since about 70M Brazilians access internet through PC, that's 12 times Denmark population, also the "favelas is one of first things to come in mind when you think of Brazil" which is also a super stereotype since 8% of Brazil population lives in the favelas..

I think Gamers Club/GamesAcademy was worth mentioning, it is a special platform that was founded by FalleN, that at first was Games Academy. It was a space for classes for improving at CS. FalleN used to online teach and answer questions directly, and that is one of the reasons we call him Professor. Later on, Games Academy became Gamers Club and it hosts both free and pay-to-play tournaments, where our local scenario kept growing.
