My understanding 1. Producers increase price to compensate for lockdown losses. 2. Government fix price. 3. Producers retaliate by lowering production to drive price up. 4. Before the effect could be felt, Government ban export to hurt producers. 5. Chicken shortage never felt in Malaysia as producers need to break even.

I used to think like most people why can't they just build more farms, automate more? After working in the agricultural industry, I understood the process. It isn't as straightforward as people think. I can already think of genuine reasons why setting up broiler farms in Singapore isn't feasible. I'm pretty sure the government has thought about it as well and came to the same conclusion.

They can, but at a cost. Will be much more expensive to produce chicken in Singapore. Due to land cost and labor costs compared to Malaysia. If Singapore wants food security, they need to bear that cost. I live in Norway, we have horrible agriculture. Only about 1% of farmable, and only 1/3 of that can be used for grains. Seasons are short, and 2/3 of farmland can only support grass. The farmland we have is tucked into small valleys, making big agriculture impossible. So farming here is very expensive compared to a place like Malaysia or USA for that matter. We have very expensive labor here too. But we subsidize farming so we have food security, sure we still import alot of foods (Tomatoes from Spain, vegetables from Netherlands. But the staple foods are farmed here, like meats, wheat etc. We want food security here in Norway, so we bear the cost of our expensive agriculture. Its a human neccessity after all

Agricultural education is key here. Instead of encouraging the use of machineries for soil tilling, start adopting no-till practices with topsoil health management as main focus. Good soil will remedy all production related issues and cut down costs needed on repetitive application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides that end up with poor quality feed, thus poor quality poultry.

Good video. In addition, why do not many people talk about the overconsumption that is happening in Malaysia? We have mega-corporations that make billions by selling fried chicken. Chicken is not supposed to be consumed in the way that most of us are doing it now! This fast food chain has to end, or this might be our last century here.

How come you didn't report on the issue of chicken poo smell? How come the farm that you visited is free of flies? Something is also not fully transparent. The main issue with open farms is the menace of flies. And the 'organic' stench of the chicken manure. Eventhough closed system, farms need to be considerate to their surrounding residents that there are meshes to prevent flies from going in - feasting on the poo and replicate into thousands.

Not all chicken are the same. Most of chicken breed for meat in Malaysia are specific breed that their diet are already figure out to ensure they meet the specific weight and dateline. Although there are farm that breed a chicken that could utilise other feed, it isn't really that profitable to be use. Singapore is a very versatile country. You banned this, we get it somewhere else. Singapore is rich and money talks. Others are lining up to sell to Singapore any product we need. In the end, the country banning the product will likely to be shooting its own feet. They will lose the market where its people have the purchasing power. They will not get back the market that is lost. At best a much reduced market.

By banning export to Singapore, Malaysia is forcing a glut of supply of fresh chicken in Malaysia to force down the price for their own consumers. But this artificial low chicken price is a double edge sword that will hurt Malaysia eventually as their farmers will cut their loss (escalating feed and labour cost) by producing less or no chicken. When Malaysia then tried to resume chicken export to Singapore they will find that alternative suppliers from Thailand and Indonesia had already taken their place. This is the reality of competitive trade. A classic case of: 搬起石頭砸自己的腳 搬起石头砸自己的脚 (lifting up the rock but to have it drop on to own's foot) That is "shooting yourself in your own foot."

@@sharilsamad9727 Hey keep cool. It is Malaysia not selling the chicken to Singapore and NOT Singapore not wanting to buy from Malaysia. You are correct to say that when the Malaysia door closes it opens another door to Thailand and Indonesia. This is happening now.

@wmchan44
@wmchan44 2 года назад
Actually the correct strategy for Malaysia to do is to encourage higher production of their chickens and export the surplus to Singapore since fresh chickens are selling in Singapore for about SGD$6 per kg while the same chicken can only sell at about RM10 (about SGD$3) per kg in Malaysia. The additional income can then be used to cover the increased cost of the chicken feed. That is the smarter move.

It is so easy to solve this issue. Malaysia has 2 state owned banks. SME banks and CGC corporations. Why not distribute loans to chicken producers like Daim? Why not distribute loans to medium size or large chicken producers to build a closed house chicken breeding facility? Why not provide tax breaks for small and medium size chicken producers? What did the government do instead. Give money to people freely and increasing the money supply in the economy while at the same time food supply is still in shortage. The result is what? Higher inflation. I was laughing my a** off the other day when Rafizi's answer to solve the chicken crisis is to stop buying chicken with high prices. 😅😅😅. First of all, where do u even find low price chicken these days. Secondly, he spend weeks holding meetings with different agencies, ministers, etc. And yet this is the conclusion that he came up with. What a joke.

Then got durian, then other saga 🙄. In between water. The solution is to have diverse supply source from all over the world. Same as now we import vegetables from Taiwan, China and Indonesia and even further away. Malaysia govt policies have always backfired in the past to the detriment of their own farmers /producers.
