"Knock Knock" was underrated and should've been a big hit, and I actually love it better than "So Gone." "So Gone," "Knock Knock," "Get It Off" were the perfect trio.
After the Storm is still my favorite era from Monica. So many gems on this album: "Hurts the Most" "I Wrote this song" "So Gone" "Ain't cry no more" "Breaks My Heart" "Knock Knock" "That's My Man"
I’ve met Monica twice. It was like seeing my favorite cousin after 10 years. She’s so down to earth and chill. She was open and it was weird because I thought she would be more walled off from strangers.
Monica after the storm era was so underrated it’s one of my favorites in her discography and it needs to be certified 3x platinum like her first two albums
Aaliyah was such an absolute angel!!! You can't help but be inspired by how generous she (and Whitney Houston) were behind the scenes to so many folks... Both breath of fresh air, warm and real human beings🙏🏾🕊️
We definitely need more videos like this from you, covering classic r&b stars that deserved more, or just didn’t get the credit they deserve…. Tamia would be great
21:40 I've said it many times, Monicas runs and riffs are honestly right up there next door to Brandy's . All eyes on me really showcased that for her. She does it so effortlessly that I think people actually forget to credit her for it.
I Wrote This Song is one of my favorite songs by Monica. I had a close male friend who was killed in a mistaken identity situation around the time this song came out. They had it in rotation at my job in the mall and I went and bought the CD on my lunch break. I played that song and Hurts the Most almost every day.
I feel like she has been a great success story but I get what you mean. She had the duality of somewhat proper with unabashed street sensibilities. And that was not going to catapult her as far she could have gone because she was too staunch in her "I'm going to be raw me with sweet me whether you like it or not" approach. That's why Whitney later reminded her to never let the industry change her. Had Whitney put her foot down about exactly who she wanted to be in the public when she came on the scene in the 80s, as Monica did in the 90s, she would have never taken off like she did.
Y’all have to understand legacy. She absolutely has a wonderful career. Selling over 25 million albums worldwide and having the most successful female collaboration of all time is most certainly “taking off”. She’s made and is still making a tremendous impact on the music industry
At first I thought you forgot to talk about U Should’ve Known Better. Then, understandably, for storytelling purposes it came in later. I’m sorry I doubted you. 😂 Excellent production as usual.
This was so good,! You alway do your research and you are ALWAYS ACCURATE! AND SHOW rare photos barely seen! You are credible at what you do! I will always appreciate you. I see the hard work you put into each episode! Please do an in depth video on mya's moodring era. Why we're there only 2 singles? Fallen and My love is like wo!😢😅😮
@@jasminesb True but she was trying to talk him off the ledge and he didn’t want to be stopped. If he saw her calling the police, he likely would’ve shot himself sooner.
@@HildaSerrano16I can kind of understand that. Being frozen in place and not wanting to say or do the wrong thing in that moment …. Butttt after he did it and she ran to get A GUN is just off to me. They didn’t have phones then ?? She ran to get help after he said all his last words? Idk
Before you walk out of my life, means a lot to me. I got sober 6 years ago and making amends to previous significant other has been important to me. Also, cutting in Little Shop of Horrors during the diamond on her teeth scene, is chef kiss!!!!
You’re the ONLY one to talk about the DOWN FOR WHATEVER track. I tried my best to find out why it wasn’t released, it’s a hidden jewel and sounds so darn good.
Thank you for such an informative video! I love that mo embraced that other side of her and didn’t let ppl put her in a box. I recently seen her at the pink Friday 2 tour and she looked and sounded amazing STILL. I was standing the entire time and her set was wayy too short imo. Such an icon and inspires me alot as an artist. She really doesnt get the praise and recognition she deserves. I also love how you included the video of her and Brandy for Arianas new single. One thing for sure there will never be another GOONICA!!
The RESILIENT Monica is one of the most BEAUTIFUL and GIFTED singers I have ever known of in my life! So glad we're a part of the same generation. Her SIGNATURE voice is TIMELESS! So Gone, Just of Dem Days, Before You Walk Out My Life and For You, I Will are just some of my many Monica faves! She is a LEGEND! ❤ Sidenote: Please cover Vanessa Williams and Brandy for your Triumph series. ❤
Talk about britney spears original doll album that was canceled in 2005 after she went to a radio station to play her new single and shorty after that her lable said there's no album then she suddenly had a meltdown and shaved her head and then released blackout in 2007
i’ve been looking for a video about this era of her life for the longest time! i’m a big monica fan and i love the “after the storm” album SO MUCH. i was born in 04 so i didn’t get to experience this album cycle or monica’s career at the peak so i thank you! 🙏🏽
I have been a Monica fan ever since 1995, when Miss Thang was released. She always had this big, strong and mature voice since she was 15. I remember how huge "The Boy Is Mine" era was, she had 3 # 1's from the album. I remember reading her "Sister2Sister" cover story, where she talked about Jarvis and her new album. It was heartbreaking to know she had to experience something so traumatizing. I was excited for the new album. She released "All Eyez On Me" and then it just went radio silent. Even though, we didn't get all of the songs from that original line up, we did get some of them. I loved that Monica wrote on this album. I remember purchasing, "After The Storm" from Walmart. I was so excited to get home and listen to it. I loved it!!!! I was constantly playing it from beginning to end. It still remains one of my favorites from her. I wish that she could have reached the level of Whitney, because she is so underrated. Love Monica!!!! Thanks for making this video. ❤❤❤❤❤
Justified by Jeury! You did your homework! I didn't know about the special edition of After The Storm 😮. That's one of her best albums! Didn't know about working with Kanye either 😮. I remember R&B from 03. I always felt that Mo didn't get the shine and Grammy Awards like Ashanti, Alicia Keys, and Beyonce. Mya, Monica, and MJB were in the shadows of Dangerously In Love. You got the assignment sir 👏🏾!
I haven’t even watched the full video yet, but I know this is a good retrospect. I’m definitely gonna do my Monica retrospective videos after this. I have Miss Thang up in Que, love Monica!
I like Monica. She is real but gives off mean girl vibes. Like she would be cool with the nerd in chemistry honors class but wouldn't do nothing to stop the girl from being bullied outside of that class.
This documentary was needed.Monica is needed. I can't wait for this long, long anticipated album, tho. The Boy is Mine album made me a fan, but Breaks my Heart locked me in 4 life!! Great work!I wish we could get a Oprah-Gayle King /Whitney Houston type of interview one day.🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾
Clive Davis was grooming Mo to be the next young Whitney. Remember how she had to wear that armband to cover up that big ass tank on her arm with C-Murder's name. She wanted to be the hood, down to earth chick, and not a classy ballad singer.
@@GameLover-pz5zc29:33 she says “My mind’s playing tricks on me. I’ve destroyed his home and all this stuff for no reason”. Sounds like hallucinations to me 🤷🏼♀️
I am from Atlanta, Grady babe. Monica is an 80s babe like me. From both sides of the track and I understand Monica's life bc that was my life too growing up in the 90s in Atlanta and fascinated by street life especially if you live in the suburbs but you spend everyday of your life in the hood bc of school and having to go to school in certain areas if your parents family still live there and they have to work. It is not far fetched. But I use to see Monica at the Kroger Moreland Ave by Thomasville and Lily Valley.
Ok I was a teenager when after the storm came out and I wondered why AEOM and So Hood weren’t up there! Back then the label lied and said the AEOM album was leaked so they shelved it
Yesssss I love Down 4 Whateva!!!!!! I didn’t think anyone else knew about that song!!! I was blessed to have the album with that song on there as a kid. Definitely my favorite song outside of So Gone and Should’ve known better.
Down 4 Whatever gave me life. I actually thought What Hurts The Most should have had been the 4th single and U Should've Known Better been the third. The messaging would have resonated so much, and the video would have been beautifully shot.
