What mechanics are concerned about is the lack of respect for a Commando. There is a difference between using a bike and ruining a bike. After 50 years in a crate a machine needs extra special care to bring it back to life. A person who is knowledgeable about Commandos, would do many things to ensure you gave it all the care in prep a 1975 Commando needs and requires. Running a bike that needs to be broken in , has to be tuned well and oiled up so you don't start it dry. It is kind of like giving some one a nice gift and they go out and destroy in a few days. And by the way I am a very well known Commando mechanic.

@Carl Hokanson sweet as mate, but maybe behind the scenes he spent an hour kicking it through to oil her up, we all appreciate some lubrication before a great ride 😊 he doesn't sound like a cowboy, run in time is very important but a Norton loves a good hammering otherwise they carbon up
@CHRnorton
@CHRnorton Год назад
@@infidel202 I seen other videos he has done, They have a lot to learn about the care and feeding of motorcycles like a Commando. Most people would do research and get a shop manual to read . Even the owner's booklet that comes with the bike has good info in it. Running a bike with a choke on is NO way to break in a bike. I can already hear that the motor is very noisy and there is a good chance the cam and lifters that are known to fail in MK3s are on the way out. Also there is a transmission bearing that need to be replaced as they also are defective. And tork specs on the parts they installed need to be used. It needs a couple of days or more work by a Commando mechanic. Well, he certainly did hammer it, but in the wrong way.
@infidel202
@infidel202 Год назад
@@CHRnorton how about letting him know what was defective from the factory, unless you know what is wrong you can't fix it,especially if the cam's weren't hardened properly or the pushrods were originally soft, just as the previous owner of my bike put the wrong oil pump on it when he rebuild it, I found out after pulling the Head and barrels off to fix the cross threaded exhaust nut and noticed the rocker arms were bluish from just getting enough oil and the cam had a 60 thou lip at one end, good way to find out the bike you just bought that came with receipts for parts used in a rebuild was put together by a chimpanzee using half a brick and a cold chisel, I didn't hear the cross threaded exhaust until after I had put 500 miles on it and was checking the speedo against a mates gsxr on the highway at night, the monkey had used locktight to cover it up, that was my introduction to the bike I had wanted for years, if you have knowledge about factory faults then instead of criticism offer information as there are a lot of so called experts out there who know F all, I met one in particular who knew everything according to him, I asked a mate about his experiences with the said expert and the truth was he was a total F Witt, unfortunately there are lots of these clowns out there, I could take two weeks to tell you stories about two brothers who are according to them experts in vw beetles but in reality are the most useless pair of monkeys to ever hold a spanner, the older one even pretended to know motorcycles

I was once commissioned to fix one of thos old British bikes, it was a early Triumph Bonneville and like all brits if it has oil it leaks. Well this customer had seen one of my friends Bonnie that he made all the seals and changed rope seals for modern oil seals. The customer hated it leaking, and asked me to do the same for his bike so we changed every seal and rope to modern oil seals and teflon rings. It cost a lot but he was so happy that he brought his other triumph to get leak free too. Great old bikes but very prone to leaking. They are ment to be driven and not left rotting!

The ‘Hillman I.M.P.’ engine you mentioned Sonny fitting to an Atlas chassis is from a small British car from the 1960s, the Hillman Imp (‘Imp’ being one word). Seems like an aeon ago, but I once owned a race spec' Egli-Vincent 1000; its engine was Lightning spec’ and its Vincent clutch was dumped for a Norton. Historically the single pot 500 Manx Norton in the 50s was ’the business’; the benchmark. It’s worth being reminded that for most of the 70s the fastest drag bike in the world that ran regular 7s was T.C.Christanson’s ‘Hogslayer’, a twin 750 engined Norton beauty. I saw T.C.C. and Hogslayer in England when he came to see-off everyone else in great style in these parts: sensational. I recall also that in the years I used to read Cycle magazine when Cook Neilson was its editor, its inside front cover advert was for the Norton Commando. It was a great machine.

Fun facts about the Nor*Imp* The 4 cylinder overhead cam engine was designed in WW2 as a high performance water pump motor and was designated the Coventry Climax. It was single OHC water cooled all alloy available in low compression and sports versions. No man ever fitted one to a Commando frame but used the Dominator duplex frame instead. The conversion involved making custom Al castings to fit over the clutch bell housing and transmission would be a separate unit quafe gearbox. And imp is one word being the car model . 10:06

I think the reason for the hate is that so many of these old twins ended up as choppers, and as you know a chopper has no afterlife and is effectively lost to the world. This is a problem when the spares availability from your long dead manufacturer is minimal to say the least. This unboxed beauty is far away from the threat of choppering, and since it's appeared at the peak of the retro boom I'm sure it will live a long and happy life wherever it ends up showing Enfields how it was really done.

Shawn, I am glad you have come to enjoy your 75 Commando. It is a beast! I have wanted a Commando since I was in high school in the early 1970s. This year, I was finally able to fulfil my dream and I have bought not 1, not 2, but 3 Commandos (a 71, 73 and a 75). In fat, I got my burgundy 75 from the same guy in Livonia that sold you your black 75. :-) (If I had known Adam had a 75 in the box before you bought it, I would have given you a run for your money in buying it). :) My Commando is now registered and street legal in Texas. My goal is the restore it to (mostly) stock condition. I anticipate that I will leave the Mikuni carb on the bike because (1) Amal carbs are tricky, and (2) Amal carbs are expensive. So, welcome to the Norton Commando world and keep up the great videos. Lee

I got out of the army at age 21, 1976. My brother, who had served as a marine in vietnam, and myself, went to a dealer that carried Harley, Triumph, BSA and Norton....We went in with both of us anticipating buying a new bike..It was a candy store, during an era when motorcycles were the embodiment of Americana...We looked at everything..I kept drifting back to this brand new red, 1975 Norton 850 Commando..My brothers eye was on a new Bonnie..We both rode away on new scoots..As we throttled on to the freeway in Southern Oregon, my brother gave me the "let's see what they can do" sign, and we both rolled the throttle...It wasn't long before he was fading away in my rear view mirrors....After we switched bikes, just to compare and claim bragging rights, it was abundantly clear that I made the right choice...The rubber mounted 850 was velvet thunder..I'm now a couple weeks from 70 years of age..I've purchased north of 30 brand new motorcycles in my life, including 7 new Harleys..But the one that's most akin to "the one beautiful woman" that you let slip away, is without question, that most ravishingly beautiful Red, Norton 850 Commando... ..

Shawn, Still have my '74 850 MKII Roadster that I purchased new in'74. I paid 2,995.00 for it new. A local dealership, WIW, here in Minneapolis, bought a ton of the '75's that came to the US in '76, as the '75's that were held up in England due to the fact Norton were in receivership. The selling price was 995.00. I have a buddy that bought two, in the crate, as an investment. They still sit in the crates TO THIS DAY. The '75's were detuned to meet the emission standards here in the US. They also buggered up the shifting by switching to the left side, and 1 up/ 3 back. A proper Norton is right hand shift, 1 back/ 3 forward. I still catch myself down shifting at higher gears on my new bikes if I'm not paying attention. Muscle memory, I guess. The huge mufflers created a lot of back pressure on the '75's (as part of the emission standards), whereas my '74 came with the peashooter style. Thus, the '74's were much quicker. Had many bikes in the intervening years, but at 73 years old, The Snortin' Norton will always hold first place in my heart. Hope you get it sorted out; they are a joy to ride.

Power was around 55 to 60 hp. The 1971 Dunstall Norton was 70 hp and the first bike to run a 1/4 mile in less than 12 seconds (11.9). Depending on the front sprocket, top speed was around 115 to 125 mph. In the 1970's there was a west coast (Garden Grove, California) shop HPI (George Gjonovitch) that worked on Nortons, including a 940cc kit and a nitrous oxide kit (I doubt the tranny's would last long with the nitrous kits). When HPI got close to shutting down, there wasn't any good shop to get maintenance done, so I sold the Norton (and bought a gold 1982 Suzuki GS1100E).

He had so many collectors' items there, memorabilia, and his record-setting Vincent way up on the wall. I never saw how he made any money. I was interested in several bikes he had, but they were way overpriced. There were some affordable used bikes, but none that grabbed me. Still, he, his son, and wife were so fun and welcoming, I loved stopping by there. Sad to hear of their passing. I imagine his son and daughter are still around. In 1971 I bought a 750 Commando in Holland, toured there, and brought it to the US. It ran fine until it didn't. A plastic oil line MELTED. What a mess! So I sold it as-was and bought a faster, cheaper, and more reliable Honda 450. Since then, I've avoided English bikes, though I imagine now they're better made.

The earliest sound I can remember is my Dad's Norton. I believe it was a 600cc, and he and Mom would put me between them on it, and we'd drive up the California coast to my grandmother's place (around 1971, and I actually had my own small helmet)!

Hey mate, I'm in Australia 🇦🇺 I've owned a 71 fastback for almost 30 years and love it 2nd 3rd gears are the fun gears through shape twisty roads, a mate set up my clutch and it's a easy two finger pressure, the trick is to adjust the cover plate screws exactly the same, before he showed me it was a wrist breaking experience in peak hour traffic, it's your bike who cares what some boofhead thinks when you get up early on a sunny morning and head off to your favourite winding road for a few hours of you time then come back with a smile nothing can take away 👍 Wack a set of Avon's on it and let it show you how well it works the corners, ohh and if it has shim isolaslics change them to mark 3 isolaslics, its a beautiful bike mate 😊

I used to have a 1969 Norton 750 Commando. Loved it. Back then they were known for having superior cornering ability. Also, the pistons both go up and down at the same time. Which is why the engine was nestled in rubber motor mounts. My bike was used and I think the mounts were wearing out so the bike tended to hop a bit at idle. I bought a Norton in the first place for its beauty. The British make the most beautiful motorcycles, in my opinion.

My first car was an Hillman Imp and they're great fun to throw around. They needed extra weight in the frunk as the rear engine tended to make the front a bit light, which in turn made the steering a bit tricky. The biggest fault were the drive rubber doughnuts, which were at the ends of both drive shafts and bolted onto the rear wheel hubs. I had one go whilst driving and the with the drive shaft loose and flopping and smashing into the underfloor, it cut the brake lines too... my sphincter had a good workout then I can tell you!

It's cool to me that you can find something this old sitting in a crate these days. Most people would have left it crated for the "conversation piece." It deserves to see the light of day, it deserves to be ridden. Granted, it's probably not worth as much now that it's "not in its original packaging " (best nerd voice).

Started riding in 1972, and knew very well of the British twins. Not as modern as the 4 cylinder Honda's but great handling bikes with some as fast as any. The bikes that I remember because a older friend rode was the Norton 750 Commando with a fiberglass gas tank. That bike was fast and a great handler. What let those bikes down was the Amiel carbs and Lucas electronics'.

I had a 1970 750 "S" and those pot-metal AMAL carbs were a real POS.. when they got hot, the throttle barrel on one or both would warp and suddenly the bike was "idling" at 3000rpm! To be fair, I lived in southern Arizona, where it does get hot. I pulled them off and substituted a single Mikuni. Happy ever after.. 55-60HP.. 12 second quarter miles.

I had a 73, It was a special machine, fastest production motorcycle built that year, top speed 142 mph, mine would do it, I loved the way it handled, problem with it was transmission, to compensate fo the under sized gear box norton used bronze clutch plates which slipped, there were performance parts in those days, and that motor was capable of real power, so many years later still have a real fondness for that machine,

@frankmarkovcijr5459
@frankmarkovcijr5459 Год назад
There is no way a Norton would go 142 stock it wouldn't go that fast even if you threw it out the side of an airplane ✈️ the early bikes made 65 horsepower but the later bikes were choked by the early pollution requirements and their horsepower was down to 57. You cannot rely on a Smith speedometer to tell you the truth they are always an accurate or they are not working at all. I cannot understand about guys bragging about horsepower and speed the bikes are not capable of doing in real life. Cycleworld with the best magazine in the old days because they would put it on a dynamometer and they would touch it on the road and you would see in reality how fast he would go and how much horsepower it would really make. They did not accept manufacturer's inflated claims about their performance.

Certainly if no lube has been added to the cables since 1975 the cables are going to be stiff. Get the lube out. Fix the front brake, it will make a huge difference in stopping distance. Did you replace the 1975 oil that was in the crankcase? And don't forget to break it in...
