Today I want to answer many of the questions about living and traveling in a truck camper. I've been living in a truck camper for 5 years - 2 years in a pop up camper and 3 years with a hard sided camper. Lets go through some of the main questions I receive:

Hannah I gotta say your vid’s are great and hit me differently. I’m 49 and my wife recently divorced me. Her reason was she just stopped loving me. After 20 years together I was now alone and devastated. Everyone told me to get a hobbie. I’m not a big event with big crowds person. I’m a lake boy/woods. I go off roading with my Wrangler and decided to set it up to overland which has been a dream of mine. You and others vids motivate me and help push me to do something for myself! I am finding beauty in the world again as I battle my depression. Imma keep fighting and you keep making the vids. I need some cooking tips! Be safe

Great suggestion and I’ve actually been looking at them online. I’m definitely going to get the solar panel setup!! I would get a Jackery explorer 500. I was thinking about the 1000. Would have more then enough juice for what I need. Most videos I’ve watched recommend the 1000. Since my Jeep is already lifted on 35’s full suspension done, winch and all the proper mods for what I need!!! After the Jackery purchase then next will be an Irsa Minor or similar rooftop tent!! I value your feedback and advice on the Jackery and any rooftop tent you could recommend. I have the external body rack so my roof top is equipped, I think!! Thanks in advance my brother!

Wow! Deja vu. After 32 years of marriage, 4 grown children and 10 grandchildren my ex came to me, told me she wasn’t happy and that I needed to find a new place to live. Talk about a gut punch. That was over 6 years ago and I’m still having trouble moving on. I guess I need to get a hobby as well.

Water pressure regulator is a good idea. I'd also consider an inline water filter. Water quality varies a lot.

I use an indoor and one outside right off the tap before my hose to keep my hoses as clean as possible as well. I use an alkaline water pitcher inside as well so triple I guess, my water stays fairly consistent as a result wherever I am I find

Hi Hannah! This is the first video I have seen of yours and it offered a lot of good ideas. I am currently in the process of restoring my 1995 F250 and putting one of those utility bed shells/enclosures on it, the ones with the barn style doors, and building myself a comfortable living space. I'm installing solar panels on the roof, to a jackery power bank, as well as installing a 2nd battery wired in parallel with my starter battery. I'm hoping it comes out good enough for me to spend a few nights at a time.

Great overview Hanna! After full timing in a truck camper rig i learned from others to run a small electric heater each morning or all night if plugged in and it would dry up condensation really well Tired ofbpop ups and way too high hard sides. Saving up for a hard side pop up Alaskan 7 footer. You should check them out.

Don't do JUST memory foam! Fellow FWC owner here and let me tell ya in the winter memory foam hardens like a brick! My solution was 3" memory foam and 1" of regular seating foam/upholstery foam because it doesn't change firmness in different temps. That way you are comfy while your body heat warms up and softens the memory foam. Happy Camping!

This is the most detailed video I've seen on this channel. Switching subject matter from locations and experiences to that of specifics related to mobile living, was very helpful. Thank you for covering the subject. As you mentioned, potentially the biggest, most mysterious expense is healthcare. The U.S. is WAY behind other countries in terms of coverage and surprise 'gotcha' bills. Even when visiting an in-network facility, that does NOT imply all of of those who provide services are 'in-network'. Worse still, those who are out of network don't say so up-front. It is only realized when unexpected bills appear.

I agree about health care and would recommend buying travel health care for the overseas vacations. I know people who were injured in a foreign country and had to pay for medical expense in cash. I did not ask how long it too to be repaid by their insurance because it was a medical emergency.

Unfortunately healthcare is one industry where the outright fraud being perpetrated against the American people is painfully evident. These corporations have made it so obvious of their criminal behavior in this field in particular that it actually helped open my eyes to the greater network of fraud being played on the people in the name of greed most industries have far more intuitive ways of disguising the money grab these guys have the nerve to rob you while looking you in the eye

I do actually! It is better with the lighter weight (1100lb dry weight vs ~1700lb dry weight on the hard sided) Huge difference!

Hi Dr. Hannah! I was thinking of upgrading my setup to something similar as your. Right now I have a shell on the back of my truck and I built a sleeping platform with storage underneath. It works great and I have been camping like this for years. (I too was Into this way before Covid). I love it because I can go anywhere unlike in an RV. National parks are getting too crowded for me and even campgrounds are getting hard to find spots. It’s nice to be able to go out somewhere and be away from people. I live in New Mexico and luckily there are a lot of remote area here without a lot of people. Stay safe out there and it’s nice to follow someone that is in this life for the long haul and didn’t jump on the Covid nomad life/overlander RU-vid craze.

The truck shell idea is always a great method, I like how stealth it is - you can't always tell someone is in the back of the pop up if it's down but you definitely can tell that its camping there so that's one major downfall. They do make some very basic popups though that are nearly empty inside and you can build out what you like and are much cheaper and light weight (maybe a good starting point to see if you like it) and these things sell so easily if you decide you don't like it because the wait list is so long these days! The portable solar shower works well during times when the sun is shining and the temp is above 60. It helps save water, too! Happy travels.

Hey Hannah Just for info Torklift makes a front reciever hitch that attaches to the frame. The reciever is above the bumper so it will not interfere with your offroading ground clearances. Just an option for your ebike, so that it no longer interferes with your camper entrance.

To avoid condensation in the cold, I have my roof vent wide open. That is usually enough, but some nights I need to turn on the fan or even crack a window for circulation. It feels like I am loosing heat, but it is worth not needing to wipe down the interior.

Great tour Hannah! Really appreciate the candid answers to a variety of questions - thank you SO MUCH!! Do I get any points for telling you - Softroading the West recently shared some pop-up canopy info from Overland Expo PNW, and learned in his comments that the "Super Pacific" (Wedge camper) has an inflatable mattress under compressed foam, which apparently deflates only partway when you open the valve and put the top down, then really doesn't need much to re-fill again but is apparently SUPER comfortable according to several comments. As for health-care - from what I understand - just go to Central/South America and it's easiest to just pay as needed in many countries - so you're well underway when you get around to that. Although I think best to wait before going to Ecuador or Panama right now (see Nomadic Movement channel). I hope to also head down through Central and South America before too long - maybe I'll run into you down there some day... Cheers! from North Vancouver...

This is your most detailed overall tour of your rig yet, Hannah, and you are looking incredible, I must say!! Maybe you can show us your water storage and filtration and your sources in a future video? And how you make that bike work for you and get all this edited on video like a pro!! I'm going to have to say I like the pop-up better than that Lance, I think I would go for that space layout and amenities more than what that Lance had, but I did like that rear ladder roof access of the Lance, but you can sneak under bridges a little better in this one There's also more storage options in there than it looks from the outside which is always a plus on the road and off. Thanks for the thorough introduction to the pop-up camper. Probably better than anything the mfgr puts on their own website. Even when collapsed, it looks like it would not fit in an ordinary residential garage door ~ 84inches tall. Thanks again for this excellent walk through. Safe Travels.

I will be looking into a water pressure regulator. I will be picking up my first slide in truck camper tomorrow, but I can say I'm no newbie at the off grid life. My slide in is a Northstar pop up which yes you can tie it down with the frame brackets but also their are brackets that will secure it to the bed rails, and this is the route I'm choosing for extra ground clearance. I am also planning on removing the lifting jacks ounce the camper is installed for this same reason. For some of my trips I too do the BLM shuffle and works out real well if you plan things right. In my home state I have also found a spot that does in fact have free shore power, this spot will be useful since this camper is new to me, and for when I get my solar setup figured out.

Thank you for all your time. We put a 100% organic latex 6" mattress that we got around Seattle. They cut gown a king and made a +Queen to fit our Sportsmobile. LOVE IT. It is heavy and a bear to flip once in a while, but Sooooo worth it. Have always enjoyed your type of set up but I've really grown accustomed to parking and popping up the privacy curtain and swinging around and walking right back to the bed or kitchen. Makes that stealth camping a breeze and quick get aways even better. Have only had 1 instance with hammering on the door at 3 in the morning but hit the alarm button on the keys and jumped into the drivers seat and started up. Hello Hanna, I live in my RV and have RVd for thirty years. I have a little tip you may be interested in. Being you have a small refer and like left overs try using zip lock bags. You can take food out of the hard plastic containers from the store and put the food in the storage Bags and double your space. Thanks for sharing your life, stay safe.

We had the same fridge in our last camper van ,but had a small compressor fridge for a dedicated freezer. I have a friend who put a big extra fridge in their back seat of their pickup powered by a power station.

I use to work for an industrial power tool company and one of the biggest problems we encountered was people using the wrong gauge extension cord, nothing would burn up a $120.00 circular saw faster than a 100 ft. 16ga extension cord, you should be using at least 12ga cords!

Good overview. It's good for people to see just how expensive this lifestyle really is. And you're doing well with the low truck and camper payments. Being Canadian, I was mildly stunned at the cost of health insurance, although I am sure I pay just as much or more, hidden in my income tax. I would be interested in your cell coverage setup: what provider, do you use a booster, do you get good overall reception, do you upload via your cell, etc. Cheers and happy camping!

I have a pretty decent plan, HMO but young with no health issues so I know they get much more pricey as you get older=/ I use Verizon, it works in most busy areas but not off grid which reminds me of another expense I forgot to mention (Just recently started using Starlink) for remote areas and I believe it's $135 a month!

Usually people that get “free stuff” from the government are those that are unemployed, although if they had been previously employed, they paid in for that “free” money. I don’t recall getting anything free from the Canadian government. Maybe that’s just me.

In my Hawk I have the cassette toilet (which is wonderful) and the indoor shower which I am afraid to use - someday I will have to try it out. My biggest problem is storage - with my options the big storage next to the fridge is gone and the shower pan takes up the space under the Dinnette. I ended up putting two bins in front of the windows on the dinette and put my sheets in one and random stuff in the other one (clothes, backpack, hats and such). If I want to use the dinette I move the bins up to the bed. I put a memory foam topper on top of the stock mattress and I am pretty happy with it. Also put a standing desk floor mat on the floor (had to cut it down a bit) which makes standing a lot more comfortable and makes the floor seem warmer too. I don't use the stove at all - so I mounted a microwave (700 watt small one) on the counter over the stove. Works well for me, my fridge has a much bigger freezer so I can usually have 2 or 3 frozen dinners with me (not much of a cook). I also have a WIlco hitch mounted tire carrier - which is really handy. It swings out to the passenger side and you can mount your spare tire (mine are oversized) and a few small boxes to the swing out part. Carrying bikes with a Four Wheel Camper is always tough.

I live in my FWC Hawk, & there is an easy solution to the uncomfortable mattress issue. I kept the original foam matress, but underneath it I permanently keep an inflatable & insulated backpacker's thermarest-style mattress (*not* the old-fashioned & uninsulated blow-up gizmos.) After popping the top, I put a few puffs of air in the thermarest to partially inflate it. (It is uncomfortable if over-inflated.) Before lowering the top, I open the thermarest valve to let all the air out. This solution has 3 major advantages: (1) The partially inflated thermarest is very comfortable. (2) It adds extra insulation in the winter, and (3) the thermarest virtually eliminates wintertime condensation under the OEM foam mattress.

The problem I'm seeing with this setup - especially with increasingly volatile things that are going on everywhere is that in case of a bad situation - God Forbid, you will need to get out of the camper to get into the drivers seat to get away...That's just too much of a safety risk. I hope you find a better solution.

Everytime I hear an American talk about their health insurance I find it mind boggling. The idea that you have to call before you go to a hospital to make sure your insurance will cover it. 😳 🇨🇦 it always makes me thankful to live in Canada. I can go into any hospital across the country. The most I'd have to pay is for parking.

I just couldn't live under a dictatorship disguised as a democracy just to get 'free' healthcare that my taxes are paying for! being told what firearms I can own, what shots I have to take, when I can leave and come back to my country just doesn't seem worth it! @@tombrown8522 I guess you didn't get the memo that Canada is a far healthier democracy than the US. We're far from perfect but much better than most countries. We understand that freedom doesn't mean some sort of libertarian hellscape. We strive to balance individual freedoms with the understanding that there is a responsibility to our fellow citizens by providing healthcare etc. EVERY advanced nation on earth (and many developing nations) provide universal healthcare to their citizens. Are we ALL wrong about that and the US is right? Seems pretty arrogant. Non of our citizens are going bankrupt or foregoing care because we can't afford it. We also spend FAR less than the US in public funds toward healthcare. So you spend more taxpayer money on healthcare, can't cover everyone, and have worse health outcomes. But hey, freedom, am I right? You do you. I'll go get a hip replacement when I need one. I don't need to be able to afford what is a human right. The world is so over your American exceptionalism. Just admit that the US way is not the only way.

@@saddletramp6935 It's not free. It's publicly funded, universal healthcare. I pay less in taxes than an American does because you guys have publicly funded Medicaid, but it's not available to everyone and cost a lot more because you profit is king in the US. America has been fooled into thinking healthcare is not a human right and is instead some communist plot to steal your freedom, when in reality you system is set up to benefit the rich and corporate profits. But to answer your question, Canada spend 10% of our GDP on healthcare. The US gov't spends over 15% of GDP on healthcare. That's more than your Social Security and Defence spending combined. Your healthcare systems is rigged against you. The rest of the developed world just shake our heads at your system. We're also astonish at you lack of paid maternity/parental leave and no federally mandated paid vacation/sick days. The land of the free are slaves to almighty dollar.

About condensation, If you crack the roof vent above the bed slightly overnight, moisture from breathing will escape while still warm. Also with a diesel heater, you could hang clothes to dry.

I replace my bed cushions with an Exped Megamat with a 2” memory foam pad then a bamboo mattress pad. Sleeps super comfortable

Overcrowding is one problem, but people being abusive or ignorant is another. Unfortunately we also have a rabid government that will use any excuse to take away our freedoms and we'll be lucky if things like the damn ticketed entry at the parks and further closures don't become permanent.

Great video on the Four Wheel Camper. I have the smaller Fleet side dinette model, and love it. One thing I noticed on your batteries is the wing nuts and risers. Make sure those are good and tight, especially since you're off road a lot. My battery manufacturer warns Not Finger Tight- torque to 11 Foot Pounds. I just upgraded to a lithium battery and Victron Orion smart 12/12-30 charger and Shunt, game changer on a quick recharge from the trucks alternator.

Good call I haven't checked them in a hot minute, thank you for the specs - I'm all about torquing to spec. One time I took my truck to a shop for some help with the shocks and when I left NOTHING was tight, nothing to spec, everything rattled. Terrifying to me but I guess some don't think it's a big deal?!🤷🏻‍♀️ Always check your nuts and bolts kids😉

I use shower-less soap. I found out about it working with elderly that can’t get into showers. It is a kind of sponge bath. It does work.

Awesome video! Very informative! I’m 54, retired, kid leaving to college. Im pretty bored and seek adventure! I’m trying to decide between a sailboat, or a diesel 4x4 w/pop-up camper, just for 30 day adventures. Many friends do the sailboat and it’s mind blowing how comfortable these sailboat are and how affordable they can be. But you’re pretty much trapped in one spot. For instance, my buddy has a 41ft sailboat and lives in Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles. His slip fee is $1,000. He has every amenity you could imagine. Other friends have sailboat and are in BVI. But they’re still sorta stuck in a specific location. All the condos around him cost millions. He’s got it made, but he’s not real mobile. Which brings me to the 4x4 pop up. I grew up camping. Back in the 1970’s you could literally camp anywhere. Anywhere in Colorado, you’d just pull off the road. So a lot of decision making to do. Awesome information 👍🍷🥳

Nice. We thought about taking out our rear seats out for the bins, but I think we'll try this season with seats in and then take them out if it becomes a problem. One other option that I prefer is the midcab truck topper. Yes you lose the ability to stand up but you eliminate all the other downsides. I think the best option if you roll solo.

For my propane useage on my 9 ' hard sided truck camper. During the warm periods no furance use, the Refig, water heater and cooktop are on or in daily use (cooktop 3x a day) i get 18-20 days off a single 20 lb propane tank. My camper has two 20 lb tanks. I set the water heater tank thermostat so the water temp is perfect for a shower using only the hot water valve in the shower faucet. This avoids wasting water using both the cold an hot valves to get the shower temp correct. With all the above still in use AND the furnace runs at night set to 59 degrees, a 20 lb tank will last 5-8 days depending on much the furnace runs during the cold winter night. A lot less If the furnace runs a lot then 3-5 days per tank. I've parked in ski area parking lots at night both in California and Colorado. The single battery last about 3 days when the furnace is running at night. Otherwise the battery if healthy has no problem with using the lights and water pump daily with no furnace. The furnace drains the battery as the blower motor takes several amps. I've owned my camper 20 plus years for your information, still works perfectly
