A lot of great points, excellent breakdown. Fantastic execution and gameplan by Devon. Ermes seemed nervous and shook by the whole ordeal. I think he expected some things on paper (like the difficulty in gripping up with Devon and his longer lever), but theory is easier said than done. In the end, Devon was just too technical, too smart, and too experienced for the young champion. I'm sure Ermes learned some important lessons from this match and will come back even better in the future.

Heh. You can't learn or train yourself out of a mechanical disadvantage. Especially if you're already at the extreme end of your strenght. If both men know how to counter each move and have good armwrestling fundamentals, and are about equal in power, the one with a mechanical advantage wins the vast majority of the time. The only exception is if he makes some sort of mistake.

Devon won for 2 reasons, the first as you said was his insane hand control and the 2nd was that Ermes was dominated mentally, you could see how Ermes was shaking in the setup and during the whole match. Anyway referees made a couple mistakes, 1st round Ermes should have lost even before of the actual go since he was regripping in the referees grip but they let him, 2nd round Devon pulled Ermes arm to the back in the setup and also slightly cracked Ermes wrist in the setup already but I think Devon would have won regardless. Ermes didn t expect to lose his wrist as soon as the match started, Devon s pronation and rising is out of this world. As you said best option for Ermes was a flop from the go and then if Devon would have turned it into a hook I think we would have seen something more

The truth is…Ermes is OVERRATED. The last 3 years. Matt mask takes a round off him lol Beats genadi in a comeback match after he had wrist surgery and didn’t compete in 3 years. Still quit the match and won 4-2. Funny when they say levan “quit”. Ermes did it first with a fake injury that turned out to be nothing. He was just getting pinned. Then he got crushed by Kurdecha 6-0. Guys not even a full time armwrestler. Then he beats Dave Chaffee. Although Dave took him to the pad multiple times and Ermes elbow fouled to save himself. Then Dave gassed as usual. Big deal everyone beats Dave. Literally everyone. Levan absolutely destroys him. Nothing impressive about that. His claim to fame is he “held levan”. People have done that before lol. Vitaly held center with levan multiple rounds. Big deal. Ermes was never going to win that match. In fact, if it was EvW…first to 3 like it should be…it would have been over so fast you’d ask for your money back. Armwrestling is a strength sport not an endurance sport lol Then he beats Jerry after he had pneumonia and lost 25 pounds. One trick pony Jerry. Yeah real impressive. Then absolutely steamrolled by Devon. A man 30 pounds lighter and 20 years older than him. Totally out classed in every single way. The Ermes hype train is a joke and always was a joke. The man has lost nearly as much as he has won in recent years. Not impressed. He needs to go down in weight. Back to 231. That’s where he belongs.

He's been rated exactly right based off his merit, how the fruck is he "overrated" what an absurd thing to claim, his resume alone and wins vs loss record past few years literally speaks for itself. Nonsense man.

The truth is people like Devon or Kurdecha or Vitaly are a nightmare for Ermes since he has shorter arms. Also the referees instantly shout and fouled at Ermes when he tried to get a better grip, meanwhile your guy Devon been getting every advantage possible since the dawn of time and people literally let him do it. Devon didnt mess with the grip that match cuz he knew he had the advantage from the go, it was Ermes job to make the advantage less impactful, but the referees didnt allow it. Funny isnt it? Devon faced Genadi and when Genadi turned out to be just as much as a piece of shit in the set ups and won, Devon fanboys were crying so much about it, even tho literally every arm wrestler who faced Devon complained about Devons set up cheats. In every referee's grip Devon makes sure to sink the opponent's thumb in his hand, he makes sure that his webbing between the thumb and index finger is higher than yours (you cannot do this in strict waf tournaments). For a shorter arm and not too big hand opponent this compromises a lot your ability to cup, pronate and also rising to a certain degree, and so it makes impossible to toproll him or to hook him, in the strap even going side becames difficult. So if you are not much stronger than him (really difficult in Devons current form) and you have a shorter arm and a similar hand the only option you have is a flop wrist press but you have to be really explosive and quickly conquer the center (like Genadi who flase started every round with his shoulders not squared) otherwise he just blocks your press when it's in its weakest spot and reverse presses you. Ermes is definitely not a natural inside explosive flop wrist presser and he's not used to conquer the center at the start because his strong point is his backpreassure, so yes, in these kind of events Devon is kriptonite for him. I also think Ermes did not prepare well and did not think too deeply on the match. I am interested to see Devon vs Laletin because having the longer arm it's easier for Laletin to stop Devon's higher webbing setup. Even Devon vs Denis will be interesting.

You're right that I don't think Ermes will be able to get his wrist strong enough to control Devon. However if he works on his pronation and rising a lot and doesn't hold onto devon outside of the strap he might be able to get the high spot vs Devon and force him to King's move. I don't think a flop press off the go would work great for him, he's not as good of an inside puller as Genadi.

Ermes will definitely be able to get his wrist stronger, Devon has improved his wrist like crazy in the last 2 years. Don t forget there was a time when Matt was able to take Devon s hand and also micheal todd with his kings move in WAL, also manu others. The hand can improve a lot even when you think it s already strong like Ermes thought. Ofc Ermes has to train it a lot in order to do that

Mechanical efficiency translates into a power advantage even if muscle-wise both men are roughly equal in power. Try to armwrestle one of your friends who is about equal to you in power, but give them 1cm higher webbing on purpose and you will see the difference. Devon's long forearm and long hand gives him a mechanical advantage that he has many years of experience to use to it's greatest advantage. Combined with the fact that his opponent with shorter forearm is not allowed to lift his elbow to equalize the webbing position in the setup means they will always be at a mechanical disadvantage. Sadly the dimensions of the body has such a huge impact on the sport. Devon didn't have this advantage against Levan because Levan is such a colossal human being, so Devon's longer forearm and fingers could not equalize the power difference between himself and Levan. Ermes will never beat Devon because it's just not possible to become so strong you can equalize such a large mechanical advantage. Devon himself isn't getting any weaker anytime soon.
@jaysmith3259
@jaysmith3259 Год назад
Mechanical advantage played a HUGE role in this for sure, added by Devon taking the advice of someone in Texas that predicted accurately Devon's loss to Levan because he didn't train right for strength. Many people got it wrong when they thought Devon would do something with Levan, including Devon, but this time may be different if he keeps doing what was advised.
@Mjumbojetpresdent

True. Every sport has this too. I'm pretty good at basketball but can't dunk, unfortunately. MJ had huge freaking hands and could jump 48inches for his vertical. That's partly why he is the greatest ever. Also, taller quarter-backs have better field vision over their linemen. Smaller soccer players often have better balance on their toes, like messi. And so on.

Genadi's forearm is basically the same length as Devon's so that's one reason he was able to effectively flop press Devon as well as counter Devon's moves. Air-mez has the length disadvantage so it's not necessarily going to work the same if he were to try a flop press. But again, Devon is so good at adapting to his opponent's moves and if he rematches Genadi and finds a way to stop him it just means Air-mez is that much further behind against Devon.

Devon is physically built for and specifically trains for the all-slips-to-straps, ref's grip setup. He will start every match with his hand higher than nearly everyone and keep rising pressure. If you don't let him lift your elbow off the pad, you're basically giving him the round. But you're also "breaking the rules" by not fighting his rising pressure by keeping your elbow down. Lose lose situation unless the refs start putting their foot down. It's so evidently clear, even with a longer forearm, his knuckles are pointing much more vertical than his opponent's (which shouldn't be possible). That is an INSANE advantage and the refs aren't doing anything to fix it. They have to force him to scoot his elbow back on the pad slightly, or make him drop his wrist, so their knuckles are near mirror images.

Listen i know alot of fans overlook this but genadi vs devon was months ago. And we know how much devon can level up just from a few months. Current ermes would destroy genadi. And wont make the same mistake of gassinf himself out bc of dumb refs. Ermes is still above genadi. Ermes fairs well against non american opponents, genadi is very quite and ermes would use that to his advantage. Doesn’t have to worry abt trashtalk or anything.
