Luke is one of the most important and underrated guitarist of our time, he has played on so many hits that people know but didn't know he is the one playing guitar. He is a guitar player a writer a producer and engineer, he is so important in modern music. As you can tell he is one of my favorite musicians.

I was talking to a young musician who stopped over to get some help with his guitar and maybe a free lesson. He asked what guotar players he should play attention to, and the first name I came up with was "Steve Lukather". He said he's never heard of him, to which I replied, "you've never heard of him, but you know his guitar playing". I played him "Beat It" and told him the main riff was Luke. I played him "Hold the Line" (which he knew fr8m some hip-hop thing), and told him to research Luke and listen to everything he played on. He came back later with Lionel Ritchie and others. Another devotee is born. Luke IS popular music.

"Remote Control" was The Tubes' high water mark. Best album they ever did. All killer, no filler. I knew of them before that. Really liked their first album, too but RC just blew me away. If I've done the math right, 22 million streams on Spotify = $88,000 to $110,000. Publisher takes half (unless you own your own, in which case double the final figures), split the cowrite 3 ways, subtract other fees, (no pun intended) and his take is roughly $14,000 to $19,000 before tax. Gotta love the music industry. They adapted perfectly to the new technology and never stopped finding ways to screw the artist.

Have loved this song since I was a kid, just like Luke...didn't realize until recently he was such a part of it. Always wondered the story behind it. Very cool. Even all these years later, it's on my "smile list"...songs I know hearing will pull me out of the dumps. I had a friend that loved it also. Both having the same rare illness bonded us, but this song as well. She passed away recently & think of her every time I hear it now...truly one in a million girl. Fee may not have been able to convince the girl that inspired it to leave her dark surroundings, but the one writing this really thanks him for helping her break out of hers. 💛

Fee's description of how he, David Foster and Steve Lukather banged out The Tubes two biggest hits in minutes, to the chagrin of the rest of the band, is a great microcosm of the session players world in general. It reminds me of the story of The Byrds first two albums. The Wrecking Crew got the album cut of Mr Tamborine Man in 3-4 takes which allowed them to complete several other songs from that album on the same day. On the subsequent album, the members of The Byrds insisted that they play on all of the tracks. This resulted in the band requiring 77 takes over two weeks, just to get the final cut of the song Turn, Turn, Turn 😉

Wow. That answered one of those mysteries you can have in your life. Every once in a while you come across an awesome song or two by a group and think "Great! Even though the songwriting team of Fee, Luke and David Foster didn't work out to great success on Fee's solo album, READ MY LIPS, I firmly believe the band members in The Tubes by turning down Lukather, Foster and Waybill's request to write FOUR songs on the follow-up to OUTSIDE INSIDE was a catastrophic mistake for the band, setting in motion their demise without them realizing it at the time. One more album LOVE BOMB without Foster and Luke and their recording days were over as well as the band for some years. In hindsight, the band should've said YES to the four songs and written the rest of the album with Foster producing. It would've been a smash success with The Tubes going down in history even more powerful, commercially known and financially successful than they ended up being. Not only that, saying YES would've prevented Fee from needing and wanting to leave to do his solo album READ MY LIPS, would've prevented band animosity towards Fee for doing the solo album and The Tubes recording career and life as a band would've continued way longer than it did. When David Foster And your record label warn you not to turn Foster down, you better listen to them and enjoy and learn from the collaborative situation.

I'm not sure that is true. One of the reasons why he was in such demand in the 80s was not only because of the solos, but because he was a killer rhythm guitar player as well. That is an underappreciated talent that a lot of great guitarists are not good at. As a matter of fact, Luke has indicated he has signed several Non-disclosure agreements in his career because he would play rhythm guitar parts that famous guitarists where unable to pin down. On top of that, he could come up with those parts quickly and only need one or two takes to get them done. So he is technically great, personable, quick, efficient, ready to play in whatever record he was assigned for and with a great work ethic. Not many guitarists can do that.

Wow what a mistake Tubes made with not letting Foster do the next album. The Love Bomb Album is pretty good I loved it, still do. Check it out if you are a Tubes fan.
