The real-life Disney bird, as if a drawing but here in real life. Bearing all the key elements required, a dainty bird, with big cute eyes, a charming crest, and pretty coloration.
Tufted, refers to the crest on their head and titmouse comes from the old English words, “tit” and “mase”. Meaning a small bird. Mase became obsolete and replaced with ‘mouse’ a familiar word that described their quick movements, much like a small rodent.
The Tufted Titmouse measures 5 and a half to 6 and a half inches and weighs roughly 6-9 ounces. They have large heads, thick necks, and are full-bodied. Their back has a pretty silvery gray color and their belly is white. Some individuals have a vibrant peach or rust color on the flanks. Giving them a snub nose look is a noticeable black patch just above the bill. When it comes to males and females, their plumage is the same so it is hard to distinguish between the two. The only slight difference is their size with males being just a little bit larger.
Belonging to the Paridae family the Tufted titmouse is a regular feeder visitor, for people in the Eastern United States.

I have a bunch of them in my yard too. The chickadees aren't as brave but the Titmouse that comes to my feeder will let me watch it cracking seeds through my kitchen window.

I've been blown away by how large their vocabulary is. A lot of cool songs; some quite melodic. There's one who has trained me to throw peanuts in the air and is insanely good at catching them.

Yeah, I can concur. I thought Tufted Titmice just made the nasal Chickadee-like call. I was also surprised that they had a vast repertoire of calls and songs. I have mistaken at least several of their songs as being sourced from Carolina Wrens. LOL

I love these guys. We see them fairly often here in Syracuse, NY. I read that when a group of small birds bands together to chase off a predator, the tufted titmouse often leads the way.

We love these little guys. We have a lot of them in our yard. We call them the hillbilly housewife of the bird world because they yell at us if we are late putting out the seeds. You can almost see them wielding the frying on when they are scolding us. Love them!!

Our titmice run with the chickadees, They are always at the feeder together. I fill my feeders up while it's still dark and they sit near and sing for me. They and chickadee's were the reason I started feeding birds 30 years ago.

I used to get lots of "tufties" at my feeders when I lived in Massachusetts. Now that I'm in Maine I don't see as many, but there have been a few around this spring. You gotta love those big eyes and that cute tuft.

They’re great little birds and seem to be doing well in my area. It’s entertaining to watch these little guys carry a 2 inch unshelled peanut into a headwind.Evan after a few failed attempts and drops they prevail as they’re a very determined bird. 👍😃✌️

Hi, I am in middle TN and feed while birds. The Titmouse is one that visits my feeders daily. Along with chickadees and an occasional sighting of the woodpecker who will come down for peanuts at times ( whom I can hear pecking on part of the home I live in ). I get so much joy watching and listening to all the birds here.

Oh Leslie, “ …, might have enjoyed this..” Enjoyed the show the entire way! Well done! Tit Mice are common here and a regular visitor to water and feed. I cherish them and yes, indeed, they are adorable characters and sing so pretty and proud. Have struck into a window before, been knocked silly but none killed…have bee honored to gather them up while loopy and talk to them and warm them close to my heart as they revive ( or not die alone) and it is easy to tell when they are ready to go again! Budgie Cherokee is terminally ill, yet she had two very good days and three good nights and is actually playing between naps today…took her for a ride and we ran errands together and she was so happy! ✌️

Her struggle is over, and is laid to rest in a beautiful gravesite here near her home. God is good and His mercy endures forever. I will pray you and your cat are ever in God’s compassion!

Tufties are such adorable birds indeed full of personality too having been regular feeder visiters for years particularly in the context of mixed winter flocks. One of the most magical things I have ever seen was watching a nest of tuffty fledgelings fledge thanks to serendipitous timing some years ago.

I found that when I moved the platform and hopper feeder away from the cylinder feeder that the smaller birds came back to feed. We have had a flock of Blue Jays ever since we bought a platform feeder and began feeding a mixture that has a lot of nuts in it. The nuts were meant for the woodpeckers that also enjoy the woodpecker suet. Instead we got a huge flock of Jays. We do have woodpeckers but they will not even come near the suet while they Jays are around. Even though we have the cylinder type feeder for smaller birds they do not want to be around the Jays either. Once the smaller feeders were farther away from the platform and hopper feeders, which the Jays have taken over, some smaller birds came back. We actually got the platform feeder to attract the Cardinals that had also disappeared even though they used to dominate the area. It seems that they do not like the Jays and Grackles either. Having such a dry summer has brought the black bears down the mountain earlier than usual so the heavier feeders are put away until the bears are definitely in hibernation. We leave the smaller feeders up because I can carry them in at night to help protect them from bear destruction. We are going to have to do some planning to decide how we are going to change things up long term. The Jays are really a bother. They eat all the nuts and then sit out there and scream on and on when the nuts are all gone. 🙄

We have daily visitors of Tufted Titmice to our feeding deck here in southwest Ohio. They're one of our favorite birds to watch! They never stay at eat but will grab a morcel of food and take it to a nearby tree to eat. Then it'll come back for more. I guess they're shy eaters!

These little birds are one of the cutest around our feeder and the ones around our house will respond to whistle calls similar to theirs and come in to check it out, then will often hang around for a while after. They’re a real treat to have around.

Great video ad usual 👏! Very informative . I was wondering , what is the best time to set up nest boxes ? Much of the surrounding woodlands save my meager few acres have been clear cut in recent years . I have many tufted titmice and chickadees visiting my feeders and after watching this and other videos I worry about if their breeding this year will be negatively impacted by the lack of nesting sites. I wanted to do something positive before now but my budget until now couldn't handle much extra spending . Any ideas to help provide for nesting sites ?

@@Dragrath1 I wholeheartedly agree . I see it more and more . I don't know of any good solutions to the problem. The land owner isn't usually conscious of the environmental consequences and the timber agent / lumber company are looking for ways to sustain their livelihoods. Very rarely does anyone think of what becomes of the wildlife. If they do those concerns become overshadowed by profits . At the moment I've had three neighbors harvest their wooded land and I'm living on a meager few acres of mostly hardwoods like an island in a sea of brush and stumps . I've allowed as much of my property as is prudent to return to the wild offering what habitat is possible. The brush does offer much cover for rabbits and certain birds. The open land gives the hawks hunting opportunities. Yet the number of woodpeckers is dwindling . Wild turkeys are becoming scarce . Quail are extremely rare . I could go on .

These sweet little guys are what I have the most of at my house next to the woods in WV . They are also the most brave lol they love coming up on my porch stealing the cat food (I put out for the strays). I have these beauties at my feeder almost daily. They do have a "call or sound" that is a lot like the Chickadees who are at my feeders every day, usually twice a day. Beautiful little birds. I'm in Texas and I am very thankful we have such a variety of birds. I also have a pair of red bellied woodpeckers, and two pair of blue jays, a pair of white brested nuthatch, many Cardinals along with many Chickadees! Loved the video! Thanks Lesley! 🐦

I see them visiting my tail-prop suet feeder (my newest feeder) along with little Downy Woodpeckers. I bet one reason is the mentioned tendency to re-use old woodpecker nest holes! Didn't know they are related to my other most liked species, the Chickadee!

Thank you as always - it's an attractive little bird. The European crested tit is of a similar appearance but with darker and sharper coloration. In the UK it's mostly restricted to some of the remaining old pine forests in the Scottish Highlands. Therefore not at all common.

@@LesleytheBirdNerd That would be a great idea. There are many bird lovers here and feeding garden birds is really popular. There is a national garden birdwatch at the end of January and we have some great bird organisations including Royal Society for Protection of Birds, a charity with millions of members and British Trust for Ornithology who are professionals. There seem to be some good British birding channels on You Tube. I'm sure it would be interesting for your Canadian and US audience to learn about some of our distinctive birds, perhaps the "cousins" of your favourites - sadly we have no cardinals or bluebirds but we do have nuthatches, several familiar titmice, gold- and firecrests, wrens, robins and European jays among others, however. If I could help at all I'd be delighted but I'm afraid I'm not a photographer. Good luck if you do go ahead.

What a coincidence that you would release this video today! I saw one of these for the first time this afternoon! I just put some seed out on my porch for the juncos and within a few minutes one showed up. I couldn't believe it! Happy birding from central Wisconsin!

My titmice love, and I mean LOVE shelled peanuts. They take one from the feeder, fly to a nearby branch, then hammer away until they're done and ready for the next! And the name is perfect, just a "small bird". Yeah, the word "titmouse" might get a few giggles from a few people, but I love that you broke the word titmouse into its Old English roots. Nomenclature is a fascinating study in itself! Thanks for the video Leslie!

We have them and they are very friendly. They're the first birds to come land on your feet begging for food when we're outside. If you're not outside they come land in front of windows and state at you until you acknowledge them, then they're expecting you to bring seed outside.

Such a cute and awesome bird! Here in Pennsylvania I see them in a patch of woodland. I put on their calls and they boldly call back and try to find me. Small but very bold indeed.

In South Texas (San Antonio area) they are year around residents and are one of the busiest birds we have. We have many mature live oaks so you can always find them picking away on the very fissured bark along with the seed feeders.

Titmice are my favorite little clowns. They swing back and forth on our wind chimes and tap on the windows and look inside. They will go from window sill to window sill doing that. At the bird bath, they take turns bathing, while one of them stands watch from a branch above.

Cool birds- I don't recall seeing any in this area, but knowing what they sound like will be helpful- keeping my ears peeled. Their alarm call is like a cross between a chickadee and nuthatch. :^) Also, could Feisty Jay be considered a Tufted Blue Jay? Seeing some similarities there... ;^)

I learned a lot more about a bird that's a regular visitor in all four seasons to my region, New England. I always hear them before I see them, titmice have a very distinctive call. With their crests, they look like miniature versions of the bluejay and cardinal, but of course have their own coloring and behavior. Titmice are so fun to watch! I love seeing these birds come to our feeder. We have many and I love seeing their interactions with the other birds at our feeder. Always thought their name would be better described as "toughed" titmouse. 😂

I recently started putting bird feeders out in the yard and we get a lot of these little birds stopping by. At first I kind of disregarded them because there plumage didn’t stand out at first glance and they were so abundant. Fast forward to now, they’re one of my favorite birds we get. They have such big personalities, and between them and the chickadees, my yard gets some funny interactions!

Treasure of treasures Leslie!!! I think my resident titmice love to play a game of seeing HOW FAST they can swoop in and grab a sunflower kernel from my feeder. They are ALWAYS hanging out with chickadees and my canary goes absolutely APESHIT when he hears the peep peep call of the males it’s like they’re taunting him 😂🌎

Hi Lesley. These perky, little birds along with the chickadees were absent from southeastern Pennsylvania in 2018, because of the extreme wet weather that summer. Researchers believed that they were afflicted with West Nile virus. It’s been a few years now, and it seems that they are starting to appear in this area once again. I was very excited to see the first titmouse last year, since then, there are several more now. I hate to correct you, since I consider you an expert, but these tiny birds don’t weigh 6-9 ounces. They only weigh .6-.9 ounces. That is 6-9 tenth of an ounce, or 17-26 grams. I actually held one once, it was like holding nothing.

In the woods I've had more meaningful encounters with the Tufted Titmouse than any other bird. They are very curious and often come close.

My family and I absolutely adore these little guys and the "weep-weep-weep" they make when we fill our feeders. They are bold! So bold they don't mind knocking at the window to tell us the feeders are low.

I absolutely love the Tufted Titmouse! Even though they don't seem as smart as Chickadees, they are more verbal, more curious, funny, and entertaining at feeders. Those big eyes with their crest and body color make them so eye-catching. I love listening to the males singing right outside my bedroom. They're commonly found mixed with Black-capped Chickadees during the fall and into the pre-nesting season. I've seen many videos of how brave these birds are around predators. They'll land on the outer edge of a raptor's nest. They'll attack squirrels and other small mammals. I've also seen many videos of these birds dominating feeders. These actions are very similar to other Titmouse species, along with the Crested Tit.

The main thing that strikes me about this bird (which is fairly common here in northern Michigan) is the VOLUME of their calls! They're so tiny, but so loud! It's like their whole body exists to resonate sound.

I live in Virginia Beach Virginia and for years Chicadees, Cardinals and Blue Jay's have been the majority of who we see. Recently in the past two years we are seeing Juncos when the weather flips and Titmouse, Bluebirds, and Finches have been showing up. It might be development taking down more trees than I would like to see but I am glad to have these guys hanging out. The Woodpecker is occasional but because we are seeing lots of these little guys has brought Kestrals into the area. The Red Tailed Hawks, Eagles and Ospreys rarely attach these birds but the Kestrals go for them a lot. That has prompted the past 5 generations of Cardinals to nest in my overgrownrose bushes (that I won't trim if they are nesting there). Great posts Leslie. they come up to me when i'm out on the back deck sometimes and i love them so much they're so sweet and curious. they'll stand and stare for a little bit, move, do more staring, and then finally go down to where the feeders are. currently they are my favorite bird by far

The Tufteds and Carolina Chickadees that I feed during the winter have gotten me so well trained. If I ever let the feeders get too low or run out, I am loudly scolded when I go outside to refill them. I've even witnessed them hopping around outside my front door calling out to me. They even recognize my car. When I pull into my driveway, they come flying out from the surrounding trees to their feeding tree and welcome me (or maybe they're scolding me again. Who knows but I love these little guys.

Thanks Leslie! I see a Titmouse pair every day and I have been giving them seeds and almonds- which they love, for a few years now. However, I can't seem to gain their confidence. I often wonder how much friendlier they would be for you. Take care.

Aww too bad about not being able to gain their confidence. Whenever a bird is stand offish to me I let it be and often think to myself, that it's a good thing it is cautious. Not too sure if I'd gain the trust of the titmouse or not, it would be so fun to see and get to know them though. You take care too :)

I'm so happy to see this video on the Tufted Titmouse. For me, this bird has been one of the most influential birds that has peaked my interest in bird watching. Perhaps one of the most wonderful things about this bird is that in fall, winter and very early spring, local Titmouses tend to make their presence more known in residential neighborhoods in the NYC area, that have enough trees around for them to shelter. I was beyond thrilled last fall of 2022 when I noticed that familiar call echoing through my neighborhood in Jackson Heights, Queens. Other than White-throated Sparrows, Black-eyed Juncos and the occasional, passing Vireo, Titmouses are one of the more interesting and less common birds found in residential neighborhoods in NYC. Obviously, tons of Robins, Starlings, Blue Jays, House Sparrows, Cardinals and Crows can be found just about everyday in my neighborhood, not to mention Monk Parakeets.

Tufted Titmice are a bird I grew up with (in northern NJ, USA) and I enjoy their calls. They are abundant here in southern NH, USA. They were a favorite of my late sister for their big eyes. Their "Ee-ba-dee-ba-dee-ba-dee-ba" is one of my favorite songs/calls, especially in Winter and Spring. 🥰
