This would have been a big hit just like Bewitched became a huge hit. They could have titled the show "Cavender & Carol" and each week she gets in trouble and he has to help her out of her predicament and help her save the day. She's klutzy but well meaning, it would have worked for the time, in those days viewers enjoyed shows like this.

So happy to find others that like this episode. I used to watch Twilight Zone religiously as a kid. I was about 10 when I first saw this one and even at that age I remember enjoying the change of pace.

I would absolutely and strongly disagree with your opinion It was quite a charming and delightful episode told in a very compassionate and empathetic way It was Carols best and most graceful and down to earth performance ever I am of the opinion that this episode took everyone on an unexpected ride and left them in states of amazement I am done with my comment Goodnye

I think it was because it didn’t fit with the theme of Twilight Zone. It probably wasn’t a bad episode, if they hadn’t tried to connect it with Twilight Zone and made it into a completely different show on it’s own , I think it would have worked.

The version I watched had a laugh track when I originally saw it premiere on Friday night when I was a mere child.
@atomicabe
@atomicabe 3 года назад
This is a hotly debated topic. Some people insist they saw it with a laugh track. The DVD audio commentary notes that a laugh track was considered, but CBS opted to not include it. (And maybe there was a version shown to the network that included canned laughter.) In the video we said there wasn't a laugh track, should've noted that it was based on a particular source. I defer to people who saw the original broadcast, thank you for sharing your experience! Did you remember if you liked this episode when you were a kid?

@@atomicabe I did like it a lot because both Carol and Jesse were staples of my young TV viewing. I was a bit confused why Carol was all of a sudden on another program. I asked my mom, "Is she gonna leave the Garry Moore Show"? I was panicking, but in her usual gentle manner she reassured me that all was well and unchanged.

There were several episode of the Twilight Zone that were light hearted. You have to have a balance for the audience to stay tuned. Plus they usually use popular series to introduce possible shows. Gives the team on the actual series a break. Never saw anything different regarding the Carol Burnett episode!

"A World of his Own" was lighthearted. A playwright dictates into a tape-recorder and changes reality for himself. At the end, Rod Serling appears and is removed from reality through another dictation from the playwright.

We need Twilight Zone new series. The most famous sound heard when something spooky or unexpected happens in Australia is, the sound of a switched on TV watcher, going “Doodoo doodoo, doodoo doodoo, doodoo”, to the theme of “The Twilight Zone”. It’s a ‘thing we do, to bring someone down to earth, that something sounds outlandish. It’s cool.

"Night Gallery" was also a Twilight Zone spinoff.
@atomicabe
@atomicabe 3 года назад
NIGHT GALLERY was born out of the only thing Rod Serling wrote for specifically for print publication -- a collection of 3 novellas titled "The Season to Be Wary" -- the book contained the story that became "Eyes" and "Escape Route" were adapted for the NIGHT GALLERY pilot movie. It's a great book, beautifully written -- and it's dedicated to Sammy Davis Jr.
@Unfamous_Buddha
@Unfamous_Buddha 3 года назад
@@atomicabe -- I had read that Rod Serling was not happy with the Night Gallery productions. And I think I remember that he didn't have as much control (or any?) over the Night Gallery productions than he did with Twilight Zone. I was born in 1952. Twilight Zone is my favorite TV show ever. I've often thought that if someone decided to colorize those B&W episodes, they'd diminish the show's impact.
@atomicabe
@atomicabe 3 года назад
@@Unfamous_Buddha You're correct, Serling was unhappy with NIGHT GALLERY for a number of reasons. He didn't have the same creative control. The producer wanted horror, instead of Serling's signature social commentary. And also those gag sketches at the ends of episodes. (Maybe that is more my gripe than his.) I agree with you that the original Twilight Zone would lose some of its power if colorized. It's one of my favorite series, too. Did you ever see the RU-vid re-edit of PLANET OF THE APES? It's 30 minutes, presented in black and white with Twilight Zone credits, music and narration. Really inspired, I bet you'd like it.
@wdd3141
@wdd3141 3 года назад
"Night Gallery" was predicated on horror and mystery. "Twilight Zone" often used the mysterious, the frightening, the macabre, and science fiction, but was not based on them. Serling's widow said he had certain ideas on politics, society, and human nature that were not well-received by some people, but he cloaked his ideas in the mysterious, the macabre, etc. to make them more palatable to people.

Well, if you care about popularity then yes, this does not perform well but who cares, if an artist wants to try new things they should be allowed and the ass-hats who sit around, creating nothing themselves, should just allow it, how could anyone get better without trying and failing once in a while?

In Stephen King's DANSE MACABRE he really rips on The Twilight Zone -- about how its reputation is so much better than the weak episodes. He's too harsh. That said, I think there are a couple of weak episodes and this is one of them.
