In this video, I'll show you how I built my current Home Theater Subs with Sonotubes. I'm powering them with the Crown XLi3500 Two-channel, 1350-Watt Power Amplifier which I forgot to note in the video.

Buddy and I built dual Sonotubes each with 12" drivers and ~15 years later they're still fantastic. Now I have the itch to go bigger! Great work.

My dad's been using sonotube for speakers since the late 70's. Typically makes an outer enclosure with a sonotube at its core with the speakers being ported into the sonotube. Works fantastic with minimizing standing waves.

Sickening. I wanna try this with an old 10 inch Infinity Perfect 10 I have. Your port is the size of my tube lol

Perhaps, but I hope people know it's all in good fun. SVS is incredible and was my first choice before I decided to DIY.

wait so the tube is just cardboard? Because its cylindrical it doesn't need to be that rigid and can handle the pressure from the woofer? I love this idea!
@MancaveCentral1
@MancaveCentral1 2 года назад
Yes, it's used for concrete pouring on construction sites. These tubes handle a tremendous amount of pressure. They need no bracing unlike boxed subs which require a ton of extra bracing making them extremely heavy and more work to build. Sonotube subs have been around for decades. I built my first ones back in 2000 based off designed from the mid 90's. SVS currently sell subs similar to these you can see on their website or here on Amazon: amzn.to/3bgzVbe

The shape itself lends to the strength. If it were a square enclosure made from the same material, it would blow out in every corner. But just like the Pantheon, the hole in the center gives it its strength. This is why most any fuel/liquid tanks are spherical. No corners to blow out.

How do they sound and with music. Also, do you think they'll work well with a Hifi stereo system?

My cousin had a set of square sonotubes custom made 25 years ago for his subwoofer build. They where an inch thick . Very expensive

This is awesome and very well documented. I've wanted to try and build a Sonotube sub for a while. I think it'll be a while longer before I attempt it. My dual Ultimax 12s (replaced my Full Marty) in my small room are enough for me. I was thinking about building a box that is the size of a boxspring for a bed (Twin XL since I'm too tall and don't want queen/full) and having the 18 I have laying around downfire. Box might be 15-18 cubic feet tuned to 14-16Hz. One of my bedrooms is my home theater room so have to use the space wisely. Full Marty was too big.
@MancaveCentral1
@MancaveCentral1 3 года назад
Thanks for the feedback. I built two mini marty boxes for my media room, (you can find that video on my channel), but realized they were way too intense for my smaller space and opted to just buy two powered Klipsch 12" ported subs instead and those are enough. I find people get obsessed with bass and end up with way more than they need or can even use for simply watching a movie or playing a game. The moto is too much is never enough when it comes to subs but the hard facts are too much gets wasted and never used, at least enjoyed reasonably.

@@MancaveCentral1 Yeah I saw the video on the minis first. Always cool to watch how others build the same style box. For my Full Marty I painted it before building. But my 12s I figured I could spray paint the port after it's assembled and you'll never see the areas it didn't cover. My 18" sub would shake the house in ways that literally caused a part of the ceiling to fall. Probably wasn't a good idea to get it. But I wanted near endgame. Or something that would last for a long long time without getting the urge to upgrade. And it worked. I instead built Dual UM12s to downgrade. Though only in size. Output and extension is very similar to the UM18. But I have two of them for a much easier time getting a good overall response. I need to replace my inuke3000DSP with a more capable amp. As it's limited to about 150w per channel at 4 ohm, 2 ohm would be 300w. (At least that's after I measured the distortion with two different methods confirming 24-25v per channel is the cleanest power per channel. And as expected bridged was 48-50v which is 600w into 4 ohm) Looks like you have a XLi 3500. I'm considering a XLi2500 in hopes it does 600w RMS at 4 ohm with some reserve power. I'll likely not come close to 600w + almost ever. But I want real power. Not the dirty power the Inuke offers past the output voltage I mentioned above. Only thing I'm worried about with the Class AB XLi is it'll use much more power than the inuke. But It should be fine. If not I'll figure something out.

no, I avoid measurements because they are rabbit hole one can never climb out of.

Nice! I'm starting my SI HT-18 V3 sono build. Did you cut the end caps very tight to the sono size or leave a little room for the PL Premium. If too tight, I could see the tube scraping most of it off as you slide the ends in. Oh, what was yours tuned to?
@MancaveCentral1
@MancaveCentral1 2 года назад
I cut a tolerance leaving a tiny gap that allowed the glue to stay between the tube and the mdf. As it slides in the glue also build up a thick bead inside the tube acting as a caulk. The glue I used expands ever so slightly as it dries so it seals in all the gaps perfectly. I didn't need to use any fasteners around the perimeter either. The tube is tuned to around 11-14. I didn't measure the sound but it's in that ballpark for sure.

@@MancaveCentral1 Thanks for that. One more question. Do your subs ever want to "walk" across the floor? People on AVSForum are trying to tell me I need a bottom plate attached to the bottom of the legs or the air movement and driver vibration will make the sub dance about on the floor.
@MancaveCentral1
@MancaveCentral1 2 года назад
Subs may do that on hardwood floors. The sonotubes I built and used at my old house were on a hard surface and went everywhere till I tied them down like a mule in heat. Now, on a thick carpet and rubber pads on the feet, they haven't gone anywhere. They dig into the carpet due to their weight. But if it's a hardwood floor even a base plate will vibrate. Use rubber or some non stick surface underneath and they may only migrate ever so slightly over time if at all. Even applying a double sided foamy carpet tape between the subs and floor will help.

this is a summary of what i have read about design of a subwoofer. There is a few points of difference and i would welcome informed clarification. First I own a Mac and it seems weird there is no readily available software to use to design. I believe that a ported sub requires less power to reach its full potential of volume and quality of sound, but will need to be larger in volume, so your finished speaker is larger, than it would be in a sealed box. Apparently, a 4 ohm driver is usually more money, and can handle and needs more power from a amp, so it is suited to a sealed box. Inversely, the sealed box can be made smaller, so long as you use the 4 ohm speaker and the harder push from the stronger amp. You used a 4 ohm speaker and made a ported tube. I think you said you used the sono sub software for design. Is that true?

Excellent questions that I think the sub builders over at the AVS Forum would love to give you their two cents on. I used a combination of WinISD and Sonosub.exe. The overall design was conceived using basic simulated measurements from those two apps and shared with the sub building community online. The group of DIY fanatic's then helped push the design further than the original plans to max out the sub drivers full potential. The goal was to design the ultimate sub with an 18" driver with no limitations based on size or weight. The DIY builders at AVS Forum are always willing to do you one better.

@@MancaveCentral1 thanks for the reply. Honestly I cant handle forums as they just go too insane and people like to go off a lot for so many reasons. I contacted you as you have actually done what I aim to do. I am intrigued by your info because I am not able to use the design software at the moment. I do not have access to a computer with windows. I am wondering if the design parameters would change if I went with a 8 ohm ohm driver? I would also like to utilize a driver with more watts so that I can run it at or near its peak performance and not at its peak RMS, while getting enough volume to energize a room about 20 ft by 30 ft with 16 ft ceilings, so definitely medium to large. I only play electronic techno not movies, and there is quite a bit of bass in that music now. I think It will be necessary for me to build two subs as you have for a room of medium to large...I want it to really thump the body without making people deaf!! all your thoughts are appreciated.
