(edit. I used leopards and leopard 3's) After working on my form lately, I stumbled upon this gem. Being FH dominant and only putting BH, I've been throwing 250 inconsistent with my BH. Been working on my form lately and pushed 300 feet, but I still got massive issues with everything. This drill combined with the hips drill, really gave me the feeling of timing (nowhere near perfect or decent, but it did help) Anyway, after spending a few hours this morning practicing at home, I went to the field to try it out and boy did I feel it after 15 minutes. I really tried to do it as slow as possible and then slowly adding some speed. Focus was in keeping my head in center, butt out and just a slight bending in the knees, whilst offhand pushed down to help rotate the hips. The first time I really felt it all "clicked", I really felt the "snap" and the tips of my fingers felt it as well 😅 I threw 370 (no lies here) and It felt so effortless, like i barely did 70% power.. Had multiple 350 throws and capping at 385~ before I had to stop. Thanks a ton for this video! (Btw, my apologies for the long post and the English..)

First off, your English was great. I didn't even realize I was reading a comment from a non-native speaker. Second... that's AMAZING!!! So glad you took the time to write this out. My goal is for subs to have good distance with minimal effort and you have definitely achieved that.

Got out today and twirled some bird in a field to loosen up. Worked on walk up per your Deep Roots video and threw over 220' for the 1st time ever. Sent my Nomads 190-200' consistently and straight down a line. Sent my Crave 281' with no effort and all my discs were coming out straight! You are leaps ahead as people figure out form instruction. As a short person at 5'4", throwing 300-350' with control would make me happy. Thx and have a great weekend.

Thank you so much for this video! I feel like it's finally giving me a feel for how my body rotates, how the hips swing first and cause everything else to rotate after, which is starting to get the timing right, and how the arms swing freely because of the hip movement, which is what creates the slingshot effect. It didn't immediately translate, the first time I went into the field, into great form and distance, but I feel like this might actually be getting me started working on the stuff that will get me there. I've watched so many videos on engaging the hips and how to get more distance, and I was not able to engage my hips or increase my distance at all. I hope hope hope that this is the beginning of finally learning what I've been missing.

I finally got the whip today with this drill. FINALLY!!!!! I was getting so frustrated, I've watched all the videos, like hours and hours of them. They all have good points but they never clicked, neither did this one at first. I'm not a beginner, I've been throwing for many years muscling the disc out there and never understood the whip or whatever you want to call it. I just kept doing the twirly bird with a disc today while throwing, getting looser and loosers then it just happened out of nowhere, then I had the 'ah ha' moment, I must be a slow learner, its simpler then I thought. If anyone is struggling with the concept, do this drill in the field with a disc a bunch and it'll happen. So stoked.

Forhand dominant player here, focusing this year on using and improving backhand, currently between 250-300, and my form feels awkward, muscled, and forced. I have been struggling to find a set of drills and videos that build upon eachother, are easy to understand, and easy to relate back to the mechanics of the throw. I HAVE FOUND THEM HERE! Your instruction and delivery is clear, straight to the point, easy to understand, and easy to relate back to the throw. I am VERY much looking forward to implementing them in the offseason to come out strong next year. Thank you for your work!!

So after a few years of watching RU-vid DG videos, and then watching 5 or 6 of your videos I congratulate you guys on creating RU-vid's new single GO-TO for really learning truly valuable things with clear instruction and actionable descriptions ("disc lag" sums up that whole move and is something I can say to myself on the course). Oh, it's also really fun to watch. And the chapter markers and invitations to skip ahead for more advanced people--really smart. For anyone else thinking about doing a DG instructional channel I'd say forget it. I've been there, done that, and am staying here.

I’ve watched nearly all the DG drills videos, and this was truly a game changer. Through this technique, I finally discovered the mysterious “power pocket” for the first time. Before I was throwing all wrong, and pulling with my arm muscles so hard that I was throwing my arm out. Now, I’m using this technique on every BH drive, and power comes from the hips/body. Before I was plateauing around 300ft. Now, I’m easily hitting 350ft without even trying. Thank you for such an excellent tutorial.

The moment I started doing this drill and got the timing right I could immediately feel my arm move faster and needing less effort to do so. Feeling the momentum move through the kinetic chain so efficiently felt like a true level-up! I only started playing at the end of the summer and now during the winter months I can't get much field work in. Yet doing these drills the last few days has done more for my form than anything I've done up to this point. Thanks for the brilliant coaching Josh!

I've been struggling super hard to fix my timing for several months (just started playing seriously at the end of last summer) and this video pretty much single-handedly just fixed it after I worked on it for a couple days. Didn't even need the whole drill. Just doing the first part and slightly adjusting my timing until it felt like the swing was being driven by my left leg rather than just swinging with it was enough to make me *finally* feel what it feels like to properly engage my lower body and it feels dramatically different than it did before. Before I was just adjusting my timing so my arm came after legs and hips but it wasn't really being driven by them at all. I've played twice since I started doing this drill and my consistency with distance is much better. I haven't beaten my max drive yet (~370) but I used to get mostly between 320-340 on my far attempts while rarely hitting about 360-370 with hyzer flips with super flippy discs. After working on this drill I'm getting 350-360 consistently with stable-to-overstable drivers (2022 Halo destroyer, Halo tern). I threw 6 drives on a 360 hole today and every single one was in circle one. This is just such an incredible improvement for me. And the best part is that I actually *feel* like my arm speed is slow now whereas before it felt like there was no way I could throw any faster. It really feels like there's a ton more room for me to improve now. Can't tell you how much I appreciate your channel.

Thank you for this video! (also the two previous ones!) I've struggled with my distance for the past 15 years I've been playing maxing out at 330-350 ft. Two years ago I got to a point where I almost hit 400 ft, but more importantly throwing past 330 ft felt pretty effortless. Due to the pandemic I've played and practiced less than two years ago and a huge amount of frustration is bulding up. My approach game is fine for me and I can throw putters and mids smoothly. The only gripe in my game is the unreachable 400 ft. Today I had a two hour field session that made me so angry about the state of my drives that I almost started listing some of my backup discs for sale. Watching these three videos gave me hope in fixing my long lasting form problem so that I can comfortably throw over 350 ft. There's also a competition coming the upcoming weekend where there's a hole where you have to cross at least 350 ft. of water if you want to have a look at a birdie. Fingers crossed I figure something out by then..

Thanks for the awesome vid. For a while now it always seemed like I was working alot harder then others to get distance. I would see people throw and it would look like they hardly did anything and the disc flies over 300. After watching a few vids I see what I was doing wrong. Can't wait to hit the course.

Nice one. Helps people realize tugging sideways with a stiff arm just hurts your shoulder and doesn't throw far. Gotta spin, bring it in with a loose arm, and eject that disc :)

For the first time in my short DG journey I could feel the sensation of pressure in my finger tips and actually felt like I was whipping my arm. Excited to get to the field this evening and see if I can apply it correctly!

Thanks John. Yeah, similar to spin and throw though I’m not a S&T guy exactly. I think the straight pull has been debunked pretty thoroughly at this point. I might recommend watching some tournament footage in slow motion where you get a shot from behind them. You’ll pretty quickly realize that nobody pulls in a straight line. I came/have come to my current convictions by watching loooootttts of slow mo and asking lots of questions.

Excellent content. I’ve been watching disc golf instructional videos since I started throwing about 6 yrs ago and have seen all the “classics” like the Beto drill and the more current stuff from guys like Danny. I think you’re on the cutting edge of disc golf instruction as far as embracing things like “no reach-back” and no “pull” while also producing excellent videos (length, content, clarity, editing, etc.) I first heard of some of the concepts you’re teaching through the Spin and Throw guy on YT and FB. Wondering if you’ve seen that or if you reached the same conclusions independently. Both of you have really helped improve my game and I can tell from watching the pros that it’s correct. Keep up the amazing work!

Everything you have showed me has helped me out! I have several disability's and these drills help tremendously, in helping my back, hips & knees not feel so bad after not only the round but walking the course as well! Fixing my forum has also gave me a chance to play for more then a round every couple of days from the relief of not stressing my issues in my hips and back! So I say twirling bird I shall be, who you looking at......I'm just a twirly bird Hahaha! Thank you! Do you recommend any drills for the forehand throw? That would be a awesome helping tool as well, again thank you! You have definitely saved me some serious pain relief and reduced allot of down time therapy.

I was recommended this video from a fellow disc golfer in a discord channel and I can't say how much I love it. No disrespect to other videos out there but almost all of the first results on disc golf technique focus so much on "pulling a straight line" and "starting a lawn mower" and guess what that does? It really encourages you to muscle the disc (which is now my muscle memory). The attention to detail in the hips and lower body allows for the arm to do what its supposed to without needing to focus too much on it. Love the video! Quick question, how far did that last throw go?
