I found the short handled version on your web site ... great for my little suburban garden with raised beds! Thanks.

Just got my single tine cultivator yesterday and I was very impressed.... what I couldn't get over was how smooth the handle was.... you can definitely tell a difference
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 6 лет назад
Glad you like it. The handle has a wax coating that is receptive to linseed oil for treating. And it won't splinter over time like a varnished handle will.

Hoss Tools so I can put the linseed oil on it without it being sticky? Good I was gonna ask that because it is bright white lol...

Definitely. We put linseed oil on all of our handles.

I have never accomplished anything in 10 minutes of weeding. I have the high arch ordered. I’m excited about a better garden.

Awesome looking winter garden! I made a tool similar to that a few years ago. I took a 4 inch pain roller handle and filed the round part down flat. It makes a perfect little weeding tool that I can use as a short handle or attach it onto a threaded broom handle. However yours is definitely much stronger built.

Arms Family Homestead Thanks! Nothing wrong with being resourceful to make a tool that does the job.

The "single tine" cultivator was also rediscovered in the upper midwest as the Cobrahead tool - sold by an old buddy of mine. thanks

Hehe, nature made me a single tine cultivator. I have a vintage one that has lost all tines but one :P. People have suggested I get it fixed but I like it as it is.

What is your spacing in row and between row? Looks about perfect to allow a single pass with each tool!
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 6 лет назад
3 ft between double rows. About 5" in the middle of the double row. The carrots are really tightly spaced. Onions are about 5-6" apart along the row.

We usually inject through the drip system every 3-4 weeks.

How do you get between the onions? I have onions that I've sewn from seed, so the density is somewhat high between the plants. I've got heaps of weeds in there, and I'm pulling my hair out trying to come up with a way to remove them without ripping the onions out as well.

@@gardeningwithhoss thanks. I think my onion density is way too high then. You'd never get that tool between my onions.

Wow. They must be planted really close. We plant ours about 4-6" apart and thin as green onions.

Why not just eliminate most of the walkways? I plant carrot on a 3-line drip, equally spaced (like you, 2 rows per line) - no need for the redundant walkways. 3 double rows in a 3 ft (36 in) bed. Any wider and I have to reach too far to harvest. This elimintes 2 out of every 3 walkways and 66% less cultivation of walkways. BTW - I bought one of the single tines from y'all. It arrived this week. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet (rain, rain, and more rain) but I have high hopes!
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 5 лет назад
36" beds work great for some crops, but terrible for others. We rotate lots and grow a wide range of crops, so that's why we don't use the 36" bed system. Once these carrots are ready to harvest, the tops will fill the gaps and you can't see anything but carrot tops. Hope you enjoy the Single Tine as much as we do!

But you are compacting the soil again by walking on it. Also how do you get rid of deep-rooted weeds between the plant rows over the ridges? Does just scrapping the surface remove these?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 года назад
Scraping the surface on a weekly basis will kill weeds while they are tiny, preventing any further deeply-rooted growth.

Judy Wirkkala effective weeding is a preventative practice, not a reactive one. We like to perform frequent, shallow cultivations so that weeds never get larger than the threadlike stage when they are barely visible to the naked eye.
@judyrosey

@gardeningwithhoss

Weeds are most easily removed in the small, threadlike stage when they are barely visible to the naked eye. So that's why we perform frequent, shallow cultivations to keep the weeds from getting any larger. Weeding is a preventative practice, not a reactive one. If you wait until weeds are large and visible, you have waited too long. With that being said, here's a video with some larger weeds: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I9tgFQbTmic.html
