Jimmy Barry Murphy, supremely talented, supremely humble. I know him but he doesn't know me. I passed him on umpteen occasions playing football with his son on the road (who later became a professional footballer in England). Always got a friendly wave from him. I'm the world's biggest cynic but that man is pure golden.
For me John Fentons goal is the greatest. The way he tapped the ball forward, and then struck it like a bullet, makes it the greatest goal ever scored. And he meant to go for goal. That was the genius of the man. Outstanding hurler for club and county !!!
John Fenton for me is one of the top three players of all time. He was completely underestimated. His contribution to hurling at club and county level will be hard to surpass. Cork were a real dominant force at all levels with John Fenton in it. John Fenton to watch gave a lesson on how hurling should be played. Today Cork lack that physicality, skill, determination to win and intelligent hurling that is key. I love Cork and all its hurlers who year on year do their very best in training and in matches. This year gave me hope for Cork hurling in the future as that spirit was back amongst the team which was great to see.
@@robertwalsh7966 I totally agree with you about Cork's progress this year. And, to be fair, they were very unlucky, especially against Clare and Limerick. Lost both away games by only a single point. And in the drawn game against Tipp, Cork could have won it with Declan Daltons free at the death. Cork are not that far off from the mighty Limerick. Hopefully, next year they can drive on and go all the way !!!
@@jamesmccarthy7228 Absolutely...there was a more determined and spirited approach this year amongst all the players and Cork are definitely progressing and it was great to see. The Manager and all his staff have the team motivated it's just for all to keep that momentum going now and there is no reason why it can't. Roll on next year.
I was born in England. I was lucky enough or unlucky to play a few games. It is so tough, and a few rakes down my back as a form of welcome is something I well remember. I've never been as exhausted. Wish they would show the odd game here.
Fenton, one of the purest strikers of a sliotar ever, off the ground or out the hand or from frees. Imagine what he'd do with modern hurleys and sliotars.
John Fenton dominated the midfield both for Club and County effortlessly with skill unseen in the past nor has it been seen today. He always had space that was made through intelligent play and when getting an opportunity he missed very few points or goals.
Both great goals but I would give John Fenton's as the best. I was there in Semple Stadium to see it. I'm from Thurles but my father was from Limerick. We went to all the Tipp and Limerick matches back then. An amazing goal by a great of the game. One of my favourite hurlers of all time.
I'm an Aussie and can remember the second goal being shown on our TV sports program where the compare said "I don't care what sport you follow this is the best goal you'll ever see in any sport".
Classic GAA stuff. From the ref blessing himself to the military precision of the strikes from hardy men who don’t celebrate like a bunch of women afterwards. Dev would be proud.
My gosh!!! There is something about most sports around the world that captures the imagination. I have seen so many but never much at all of Hurling. This being my first look in, the first couple of goals were magnificent. Got my eye in now.
Brilliant 👏. John Fenton central in both - worked that camán like a wizard's wand. Jimmy BM magic also. Neither of them had to tap helmets or charge through people. They played the beautiful game on a different level. 👏👏👏
The #1 goal with Fenton and Barry-Murphy was the All Ireland Semi final at Croke Park?? I think that match finished 4-15 to 2-18 Cork hammering a very good Galway team.. Iggy Clarke and the Connolly brothers were in that great Galway side. My dad took me to that game that day.. I still have pictures from the day of the Artane Boys BAND AND SOME GREAT SHOTS FROM THE GAME AS WELL. I used to play Gaelic, Hurling and Soccer all in the same weekend but the GAA told me to either stop playing Soccer or I'd have to leave the GAA and this was after the ban had been lifted.. I loved playing all sports but I made the mistake of playing soccer instead of leaving Clondalkin Celtic. I played for Round Towers and won a medal during the Centenary Year which was one of my prized possessions. Lots of ppl won medals that year with the Centenary Year on them I know but for me it meant a lot. The GAA was started to hide the activities of the OLD IRB, or Irish Republican Brotherhood. U still see GAA hurling teams doing the guard of honour with their Hurley's at funerals today. The Hurley was brought instead of the gun back in the day and I think that wee tradition is still used today. The GAA has a rich and full history. The sport has been admired all over the world over the past 60/70 years by lots of different countries.. We, Irish ppl, have exported our rich traditions all across the globe and these traditions are still going strong today..
Fair point Aidan. We might see something resembling JBM's but hard to imagine anybody attempting a ground shot like Fenton's (not that too many attempted it from that kind of range back then :))
Both amazing goals. I was at the 1983 semi-final and even as a Galway fan it was an unbelievable goal from JBM. In more recent times Joe Canning’s goal v Kilkenny in the 2015 Leinster Hurling final. Sweet as a nut.
Wow... that's the first goal I ever saw, wide eyed aussie kid wondering what the hell I was watching. Never forgot that goal or, the man, Joe Canning. Go Gaillimhe! Thanks
I've only had the pleasure of watching a live hurling match once (I'm Canadian). It was fantastic. I've never understood why it hasn't become popular globally. Please explain.
Would it be beyond the realms of possibility to introduce a new role or 2 in hurling? Rule 1; a point from a pull (as in not having previously had the ball in possession) could be worth 2 or 3 perhaps and a goal from a pull be with 6? Call me old fashioned but there's so many points in the game these days, I dunno, it gets a bit boring. (... and yes, I do expect to be excommunicated from the hurling world after that comment🙈)
JBM by a country mile is the best goal I’ve ever seen and I’m a Galway man……Fentons was just a pull on the ground, JBM had to negotiate a pull on a hard driven ball with a defender in his ear…..no comparison at all
How many times at any level do you see a player time his connection with a ball moving at that pace not to mention rattle the top corner with it and the defender also contesting the man. If not the greatest goal ever then the best timed hurling strike ever caught on camera in my opinion!
its more fun wining when the other team have the ref bought ... doesnt matter what the level .. the irish for the devil is fear dubh the black man , an african is a fear gorm a blue man .. crows feathers are blue .
In fairness now they still do,Cork's issue is they still want to be purests ,ground hurling and pulling in the air where hand passing was a mortal sin and it was man on man marking not hyena attacks cutting some of the artwork out of the game, Tippreary were the same style and Waterford too ,it's a trade off ,no you don't see anyone doubling on the ball 30m out anymore, perhaps the closest the other day was again Corks goal scored by Patrick Horgan vs Limerick...... you will see flashes of a byegone time in Cork hurling it's comply today or die.
Those that say lacrosse are referring to box lacrosse, not field lacrosse. Big difference. But, yeah hurling deserves it's due for toughness. Wish it was a more widespread game.
I'm Irish and went to the superbowl. What a Load of bolloxs all show and pomp I'd say there was about 20mins of action altogether. Super bull more like.
It wasn't 'deflected'. The full-forward, Jimmy Barry-Murphy, deliberately struck the sliotar (ball) towards the net, as it came to him at something between 70 mph-80 mph.
The goalkeeper, one of the best by the way, never got near JBM strike no deflection I was right behind the goal, I don’t recall the full backs name but he was a quality player just beaten by one of Corks greatest 😮
@@bernardkeating9691 no 1goal was deflected where the last 2 men were together one of each side if Yu follow the ball in slow motion when it got to them it changes it's line "up" slightly who got contact I don't know but it was deflected
Hayes had a nice hop of the ball to drive into space but the main takeaway from that goal is marking nowadays is a joke. No good defender allow his man to saunter half the pitch with a hop and a bounce.
Any shot from those distances while being great shots apart from both being deflected, are still basically flukes, it's still Kyle Hayes goal beats those two.
Ian Finnerty - Really??? You trying to say that Conor Hayes (a fine full back in his time and good manager also) deflected the ball into his own net at warp speed? Credit JBM for the class goal it was and stop taking from it.
Neither of them touches Billy Dooley's goal against Wexford where John Troy flicks it back over his head taking out several Wexford defenders and Billy crashes it into the top corner.
Great goals but even JBM and Fenton know they are not as good as Joe Cannings Leinster final goal v Kilkenny. It had to be shown from 4 different camera angles before anyone could comprehend that it was even possible.
Canning's was amazing too Noel, no doubt. I think that would have been after this particular list was made by TG4. Three very different goals, all moments of genius in their own right.
Joe Canning was a wonderful player - No denying that. But he himself got better goals that the one you describe! That was certainly a tremendous goal, but to say it was better than JBM's or Fenton's? Not a hope. Yes, I'm from Cork and both players were two of my idols growing up, but that said, there's no denying they were the 2 best goals of all time as captured on tv at any rate.
@@criostoirnott3733 both were swipes that could have gone anywhere. JCs had an over the shoulder catch, release and pull that all happened in the blink of an eye. Maybe not the greatest goal ever but certainly the greatest seen on mainstream TV and unquestionably better than the Cork two.
No skin in the game but the Fenton goal is just the most iconic goal ever, watched highlights recently of another match and the amount of ground hurling he did was unbelievable. Would probably be dropped from an intercounty team now for doing it, that skill is gone forever but this goal will never be forgotten.
Great goals for sure but over the past few years hurling has become more skillful and there are even better goals to now choose from, no offense to these 2 magnificent goals but these are very old in comparison to today's more skillful players from all counties.
Name the goals from today that compare to these classic strikes dude. What year did these 2 goals stop being great compared to todays goals dude? Amen.
What you have today is a lighter ball, players with higher levels of strength and fitness, completely different tactics and the dubious throwing and over carrying of the ball. Are people scoring better goals as a result? What new skills are in the game or what skills are players performing at a higher level than say 25 years ago? It seems to me like less goals these days as with the light ball players can pick off points from so far away with ease.
