The two main obstacles holding me back from moving to Thailand. 

I would just stay away from Thailand tbh. I moved here to be with my girlfriend ( now wife). No degree / skills and degree. Although I love my wife moving was the worst decision ever. I worked under the table for 10 years prior to that in China also. I'm only 31 yrs old and I would highly recommend that people without skills or degrees DO NOT COME TO THAILAND. There are NO jobs for you here apart from teaching. There are some high tech savy jobs but require high skills. I am only still here because of my wifes business. However that business is now down the pan and there is no money coming in. No savings for marriage visa and no degree for work permit. My skill set is Photography however that is a restricted occupation now in Thailand. I cannot move my wife to the Uk because of the 29K GBP per annum requirement. So basically I put myself in a bad position. Honestly you really need to sort some job before you come otherwise it will all end in failure. Plus Thailand is not cheap now and a normal pension will just not do in Thailand. TO ALL YOUNG PEOPLE WATCHING. GET YOUR DEGREE, GET YOUR DEGREE! Do not come on a whim and decide to stay without outside income.

I’m here in nyc working at a bakery making 1k a week. I also do online English teaching in the morning before I work. Online teaching will give you a little extra but not a lot. I used to live in Bangkok and would be much happier over there. My rent here is 1250$ a month and that’s for a room!!!

If you don't have good savings and guaranteed income you should never consider moving to a developing country because you will get 0 assistance if you need it. At least in the USA you can qualify for welfare if you need it. You will never starve in the USA. Welfare also pays for medical and housing. In Thailand, you will get no help. If you don't pay for medical in advance even during an emergency they won't treat you and you could die. This already happened to a foreigner recently. And there are virtually no employment opportunities for foreigners in Thailand. Also, you can move to an area in the USA that has a lower cost of living. Moving to Thailand will not eliminate your problems. You will exchange USA problems for Thailand problems. And Thailand has many problems which you don't hear about on YT.

Really for most people , the only way is to wait for retirement or if you can swing a remote job. Going there broke defeats the purpose in my opinion.

You're in no financial position and health position and don't meet the age requirements to qualify for a retirement visa. Despite being relatively cheap, Thailand is not free. My $2000 per month pension is adequate, I do, however, have land and a house, so no additional expenses, including medications. Don't make a blind move as your return to the US will be even more difficult, not having a job and having to start from scratch. Personally, I couldn't return to Canada, having been in Thailand for 10 years, simply because it would be too expensive, unless I return to work, which is something I don't want to do, despite being able to earn $100+ per hour. My move to Thailand was planned, I started working at 38 and purchased land in my wife's name soon after, quit working at 55 with enough savings to live here even without my pension. Coming here broke, in poor health, without future prospects is a huge mistake.

You need an income , most people wait until they have at least one pension if not two. You have to wait my friend…

There are very few opportunities for foreigners to make a living out here in Thailand. I would seriously advise you not to try and live here without money and plenty of it. You could go down the teaching route, if you have a degree. You could also teach online and make money that way. Given you work an unskilled job back home, you would be best advised to save your money and come over when you are retired and have the income. Also, you are under the age of 50. This also makes your visa status very difficult and unpredictable.

Most of those guys over in Thailand inherited their money from family

Dude, you're just not in financial or physical shape to be living in thailand long term. Also there are cheaper places in America. Sometimes you have to accept reality. You are a retail worker.

22 year active duty + 10 year civil service is how I was able to afford and make the move at 52. Then add social security at 62 and that will make me a triple dipper.

We use a thing in the uk called lanzoprozole… And it’s called omaprezole is Thailand.. takes all gastric issue away .. works like a steroid for the gut and always dissipates the pain … IBS is triggered more from stress .. I.E not getting what you need out of life .. Keep going dude and what you want too achieve will happen .. ❤️ Money? Because you now have a recent work history in the US I think that opens up more better paying full time job opportunities. Some ideas: Working in senior care Apply for Federal Jobs (USA Jobs website) Apply for local government jobs Move to a lower cost state (e.g. Texas) and near an Asian community. I would wait a few years before returning to Asia. Wish you the best

I have heard that some guys that go to Asia are long haul truck drivers. They work at driving for part of the year and travel part of the year.

I’ve been over here in Hua Hin for 2 years and love it. But I still keep my beach home in PCB as we look forward to trips back to Florida every year. I moved here because my wife is Thai American and we decided to spend time closer to her family. But if it weren’t for her I’d not be leaving Florida to live here. Yeah it’s cheaper here but not that much cheaper. Living here you’ll spend more than you think. You’ll never get insurance to cover your IBS here so you’ll be self paying - though it is much more reasonable cost wise. The one thing you don’t want to do is run out of money here, and you need a work permit to do any work whatsoever in Thailand but you must qualify for that. Teaching English would be your best bet. . If you’re in your 40s your long stay options are very limited and very costly. When you hit 50 you can get a retirement visa but you need 800k bt in a Thai bank. I wish you luck and I understand why you may like it here but you do need to be properly financed. This isn’t the Philippines and not as cheap as you think.

At your age if your living pay packet to pay packet each week the last thing l would be thinking it moving to Thailand. You're first priority should be to get your shit together EG: A stable job that pays better then work on trying to get some savings in the bank, if you don't one day your going to wake up and be homeless. Once you get it together and have some savings you can later on look at moving overseas. Thailand will still be there waiting for you. Good luck 👍

I lived and worked in Thailand for 2 years in the early 80's for an American company in the oil industry (I'm a Brit). Looking back I can't believe how lucky I was, but even though I was in my early 30's I was burnt out after 2 years and glad to move on. When I see these "elderly" men talking about moving to Thailand to live I can only see lots of problems for them, sadly! It's a young persons game.

Hey, Jeremy glad you are eventually going to make it back to Thailand.. If you have random Chaotic work hours it will be really hard to get a second job. I would find something with more stable hours in the same industry. BEFORE looking for a second job/side hustle. Then you will open the doors to many opportunities. Security guard, custodian, a really good place is a Hospital. They are always short of Orderlies.

I've been thinking about what you said in your video, you said you're 43, (you still have time on your side) you might look into trying to get a state job in the U.S. ....most of those jobs do have pensions. In your current financial position, there's really no quick fix to getting to Thailand early. In many state jobs you are vested with a pension after 10 or 20 years, look at the highway department jobs, city jobs or maybe the state prisons. A 10 year pension is possible, worst case scenario would be doing a 20 year career, that would put you at around 64 years old with a pension, just in time to collect your second check with social security. Stay focused and get that pension!

Hello Jeremy, I have thought of you often over the past few months, and it is truly awesome to hear back from you to hear that you are relatively OK! I will PM you over the next couple of days with some thoughts and ideas.

If I were in your situation, I would do one of the following: 1. Since you've taught in Thailand, get a teaching license. (Most states have a temporary teaching certification that you can use to teach while you take the classes for the regular certification) Get a teaching job in a state where you pay into Social Security and a pension (in some states, teachers don't pay into SS. Avoid!); As a teacher, you will get decent to great health insurance--this will allow you to get your health in order. Contribute to the school district's 403b and/or a Roth IRA. Get some experience; vest in the pension. Look for a job at an international school so you can live overseas with a stable income. 2. Check into local community colleges--they sometimes have job retraining programs that are free/low-cost to low-income adults looking for job skills. Even if you do #1, maybe you could get a quick certificate for welding/cdl/etc and do that on the weekends while you are getting your teaching certificate and/or teaching

Get a job with regular hours and study for your B.Ed in the evening. You might get back into teaching in Thailand that way.

JC I’ve fought GI tract issues for 15 years. So many doctors and tests over and over. About 2 months ago I finally made the decision to try to eat a healthy diet. I can’t believe how much difference it’s made in a short amount of time. You can read up on the good/bad bacteria in the gut and what foods help you get the proper balance. It sounds so simple, but it has really helped me. I’m off all the medicines I was taking to relieve constipation and diarrhea symptoms, and it’s given me a lot more freedom. Just a suggestion buddy.

Can you get into a night school to get some education? Even just picking up a trade would be beneficial long-term wherever you are. Education really is a driving force of equity for the marginalized.

If you are willing to go back to school n get a teaching license, international schools pay well, more than the income back home. Many corporations offer free online university like Starbucks or t-mobile. Another route which pays just ok is remote customer service. The airlines idea by another commenter was great. GHB also has a hookup with remote customer service jobs.

Im doing the same as before... working at a Resort paycheck to paycheck at less than 1/3 of what i was making in the US... but i'm happy here. Dont get me wrong, miss my family and grandkids but... I would like to recommend getting a vehicle that you can sleep in to avoid paying rent. Many videos on youtube to get ideas. Save up as much money as u can to provide yourself a savings for thailand. The vehicle also provides you an opportunity to move to a city that pays more than the area your in. This is something i have done myself and the money i saved was incredibly fast! God bless!

Brother your 43 and times are hard, not sure where you at in your work history but you may need to put in more time for a decent SS benefit later that will ensure you can stay in Thailand later in life. Do you want to get back to Thailand asap work and maybe after a couple years flip flop again back to US with same problems due to income? OR do you want to actually retire and live there long term? Its a fork in the road two different paths that you need decide on now. No point getting into details on those paths now until you decide, would love to hear what you want. On the work front, Casino industry has been good to me, good pay especially where I live with many positions both in the Casino and outside of the Casino in company's that support and supply Casinos, but I would go for Admin positions.

Wish you all the best. I am a couple years younger than you work full time as a software dev in Vancouver BC Canada here. I think you should be using your teaching degree and get some good paying jobs in the US to get a large nest egg going and invest a bit along the way. Salaries for everything are higher in US than most countries around the world especially for teaching. Thailand will always be around, don't rush back. Yes it is cheaper there in some ways but other ways it isn't. It's much easier to make a much higher income where you are now. Good luck! Possible look into online teaching too.

As you know, unless you're retired, collecting social security, 401 k , its tough to work out a way to stay in Thailand long term. I am 65 in a couple years I will visit Thailand.

You also have to remember that WHEN you get BACK to Thailand you still have to Live there as well ( Housing, Food ETC) you are not being Foolish by any means, you are being practical! Fight The Good Fight!

I got married in 2020! …have one idea for you. My Thai wife told me her family used to make decent money from fishing boats in Samesan. Basically what you would need is a commercial fishing boat with a skilled captain and crew of few people (preferably from one of neighboring countries). Get any government job. After 10 years, you should be getting about $1000/month in pension for life starting at 65. It might mess with your social security if you did not work 30+ years in non covered-pension job. Become a cop in California, you will get at least $3000/month in pension for life after 10 years.

I get GI issues if I take vitamin C or turmeric supplements. Consider any supplements you may be taking. I was taking vitamin C for around 6 months and I thought I was dying until I figured it out.

The retirement restrictions make it really hard to stay long term in Thailand unless you have a nice pension or show you make so much money. I honestly think your best bet is to retire in the Philippines, I know that's not what you want to hear but I think it would be cheaper. I know you've lived in Thailand so you know the costs, what's the bare minimum you think you could get by with?? This way I can look around and maybe help find you something.

Hello, get your health straight first. Then slowly try and build up some funds . Minimum 50 000 us dollars. That will ensure you're not under pressure when you get there. Dont move there on a wing and a prayer..Keep your costs as low as possible. Maybe Get a part time job driving for uber, delivery etc. Any spare income buy crypto.. Within 2 or 3 years, you will easily have 50 000 dollars... Delay that quick fix. just get your head down.

Should be possibilities in the tourism sector, working as a english speaking guide for big travel companies that operate in Thailand. Also a work from home job could be possible. Sales or simple support. Could land an employer in US, that will let you work from your home in Thailand?

I struggled in the US for my entire adult life. Since moving to Thailand 6 years ago my life has done a 180. I’m a teacher at a bilingual school in BKK so it’s not the highest pay however my quality of life is something I used to only dream about. I’m always traveling and staying in nice resorts and somehow I’ve got more money than ever before. The salary that you get with just a bachelors degree is more than enough to have a great life here. I think the key is finding a partner that is good with money. Come work at my school I can get you 40,000 THB to start and if you stay for 3 months I get 5,000 THB lol But seriously Jeremy, as a native speaker with a degree you’re absolutely still in high demand not every job is great but there are so many teaching options. Outside of teaching it’s a lot more difficult. Hope you can make it back out here Buddy 🙏

If they don't have your meds in Thailand, maybe you can find it in Vietnam. Meds are cheap and there are plenty of generic versions. You'll have to do border runs anyway so maybe you can buy it there an bring back to Thailand

Try and save up enough to start investing in stocks that pay dividends and also dabble a bit in crypto if you have enough because I think that's going way up, and one more thing is what you can do is some gig work on the side like Uber Eats or doordash, instacart, etc. Really a passive income is by far the best way to do it. Most guys who are too young to retire and are living in Asia have a passive income stream or a remote job or else they're just hustling over there and theyre struggling.

At 45 you wont be able to get retirement visa until you are 50. As for employment in Thailand you are severely restricted in what work you can do here. We have some of the best hospitals in the world here where you can get the best treatment but it costs money.
