The Two New Helicopters NASA Is Sending To Mars

By now most people know about the Ingenuity helicopter which has been flying around Mars for over two years now. What people are less familiar with is NASA’s plan and current development of two new more advanced helicopters preparing for a different mission to Mars in the coming years. While Ingenuity was primarily a technology demonstration and has been fortunate enough to help scout for the Perseverance Rover, these new helicopters will have a dedicated mission.
Equipped with wheels, robotic arms, and a few other upgrades, the two helicopters will be tasked with flying around the red planet and picking up sample tubes placed by Perseverance. Specifically, they are part of the Mars Sample Return mission where NASA along with the ESA plan to get Mars samples back to Earth. In this case, if Perseverance was unable to transport the samples to the lander for whatever reason, the helicopters would deploy and gather any available samples.
This is a significantly more advanced process than the current Ingenuity helicopter operations and would be an impressive feat. While plans could still change before this mission occurs, these new mission-specific helicopters are still making progress. Here I will go more in-depth into the upgraded Mars helicopters, the help from Ingenuity, what to expect in the next few years, and more.

The helicopter that gathers the samples could also go to the outflow channel of the crater lake and gather surface samples of the probable clays that would have settled there. Those clays would have been sorted by the water flow and be very fine. They would most likely contain any actual organic material from the lake. It's looking like the rover is in the wrong place for finding traces of microbial life but the journey across the crater would be too long and dangerous for the rover, so a copter would serve better. Collecting the sample is another problem, as no drill could be used and the clays are probably quite solid by now. A simple expedient might be to simply drop a sharp coring dart from a fair height and then reel it in. That technic might work in several places where soft soil or stone needs to be sampled.

Put these down at the emboucher of Valle Marineris so they can take advantage of the higher atmospheric pressure. Of course they couldn't be based inside the canyon but they could make sorties in and out and do some examining of the canyon walls. The higher air pressure would improve lift and save energy. That canyon is the most interesting place on the planet.

Thanks. While the whole program takes a long time and progress is not coming fast. However there is a lot to be excited about and enjoy engaging with their next plans and understanding how they will change and build on the current program..

The new Mars Heli Drone is a very good idea! Especially because I worry, that the NASA+ESA collaboration will run into delays. it could happen, that an interim Mars dust storm could bury the dispersed samples under dunes and they could not be found again. A helicopter mission launched as soon as possible could help. Bringing all samples to a central, well-known place would add a layer of security and allow for more time. Besides that, it takes (the economically struggling EU) a lot of effort to go to mars, while a couple or maybe only a few years later SpaceX will have much more capability to go to mars. The LOX+LCH4 technology of Elon Musk's rockets is better adapted to Mars' environment. SpaceX's return rocket could easily get equipped to produce the CH4 fuel, and possibly the oxidizer from Mars's CO2. Quite an advancement to what ESA is capable of!

The EU is not economically struggling, not even close. Unlike SpaceX, ESA has actually built and launched spacecraft (rosetta mission launched on Ariane 5) that flew by mars, as well as having built and operated multiple successful Mars orbiters. Finally, as was stated in the video, the precise location of the sample tubes was mapped, so they could be found even when covered in dust. Picking samples from the ground is also only a backup option, if nothing goes wrong, the Perseverance rover will be able to drive to the sample return lander itself.

Why would we need a moon base for this? In my mind mars sample return and moon base are not connected in any way, beyond both being useful steps in the direction of landing humans on mars.

Someone should be working on a LARGE Mars helicopter, powered by RTG, with all the capabilities of Perseverance, plus whatever else they can cram into it. THAT would be a good way to explore Mars! It should have a spinning, soft brush on it, too, that could be used to clean the solar panels of other probes, to get them back in action.

Unfortunately, that will never happen. An RTG alone is too heavy to make fly on the surface of Mars, let alone all the diagnostic tools on the likes of Perseverance. Ingenuity is already pushing the limits of what is achievable in terms of payload.

Atmosphere the equivalent to 100,000 feet of earths atmosphere, drones can’t fly that high. The transmitter would need to be bigger then nasa could imagine.

I can think of several things helicopters could do better than rovers. Detailed mapping and mapping changes over time. Exploring the canyons of mars including checking atmospheric pressures.

I doubt it. They have some issues in use with drones here on Earth. Especially in an atmosphere as light as Mars. As marine propulsion goes,... ehh. They work great but way to expensive.

For ESA, another cooperation would make much more sense, economically, while not hindering their own ambitions, concerning autarch access to orbit! If ESA would provide its launch infrastructure and services ( LNG, LOX, and even LH2 ) to SpaceX's Falcon Heavy. ESA could buy 3 or 6 drone ships to enable frequent reprocessing and equatorial launches for Falcon Heavys in reusable configuration. And it would be easy for Arianespace to adapt or build a high specific impulse 2nd and 3rd stage ( LH2 ) perfectly fitting to the Falcon Heavy's 1st. Even when Starship comes online, there remains a niche for advanced Falcon Heavys. This cooperation has quite a symbiotic effect for SpaceX, too, as they have no LH2-rocket technology readily available. For Arianespace, it would take off time schedule pressure and technology risk.

I don't think this sort of close collaboration would be possible. SpaceX is an American aerospace company, and as such must follow strict rules on sharing (defence) information with foreign entities, even allies such as ESA/ Ariane Group. Legally speaking, I think this would make this sort of cooperation very difficult, but then again I'm not a lawyer. Simply swapping upper stages would likely also be quite difficult, from a technical standpoint, as mass, thrust and diameter are totally different for a Falcon 9/ FH second stage, vs. a Ariane 6 upper stage, resulting in very different aerodynamics, etc. That doesn't mean it's impossible to build a second stage for FH based on Vinci or a modified vacuum Vulcain 2.1, but it would require significant engineering work to modify both existing designs. As we have seen during SLS development, mashing together existing hardwear doesn't necessarily result in the cost and time savings you were expecting. The whole point of Ariane Space is to guarantee independent access to space, so creating a dependency on SpaceX for first stages is the opposite of what ESA wants. Focusing on upgrading Ariane 6 and speeding up Ariane NEXT development would be a better use of ESA funds.

That place's atmosphere is thick and a bunch of balloons could do a lot of exploration drifting along in the cold skies! Instead, there sending a helicopter, Dragonfly, to perform a few stunts.

But, I googled specific gravity of Helium on Mars and got this: Does helium float on Mars? If you're looking to throw an extraterrestrial fiesta for an astronaut, book a spot on Mars. The thin air on the Red Planet is still heavier than at the highest altitudes on Earth where balloons have floated. That, combined with gravity that's about a third of Earth's, would send a helium balloon on Mars up and away.Dec 11, 2009 So my point is, it doesn't have to be of a large volume with the intent of lift. It just has to be enough to make it "float" and relieve the engines and batteries of some load.

these helicopters will not be able to explore the top of Olympus Mons. They are also very expensive per unit due to the distribution of the entire development cost over only one unit. If a production run of a few thousand were made the development cost could be divided by the number of units making each unit much less expensive.

We all wonder when NASA will fix the long outstanding problem with Mars dust depositing on solar cells and making them unusable. It seems that many systems on Earth have similar problems in severe environments such as oil wells and chemical catalytic's. Possibly, the lens of the solar cells themselves need redesign.

OK, I get they want to bring rocks back from Mars. Great idea. And they have a craft packaging those rocks for return to Earth. Again GREAT But I don’t get why the current rover is leaving the samples around Mars like little turds for later pickup. Why not just keep them in the River? Don’t get the reason.

The rover does both. Plan A is bringing the sample tubes directly to the sample return lander using the rover. Should the rover fail in some way, before the pickup is ready, plan B is to use helicopters to gather these backup samples.

If the rover power supply fails or the rover flips over, both unlikely, all samples would be so till in the rover and unobtainable, not a good outcome. That is why TWO helicopters are being sent, do not put all the tubes in one basket

Sending someone to Mars would be vastly more expensive than using robotic vehicles to do the job. And that is not to mention the hazards people would experience going to, landing, staying on Mars and returning from Mars. The chances of surviving a trip and returning home in good health are not good at all.

The opposite should be true. No crewed missions to mars until we have proven the capability to bring crew to mars and back safely on multiple complete, uncrewed demonstration flights. And no one-way crewed flights to mars until we have had several years of missions to mars and back.
