Dean Martin was a legendary singer / actor and member of the Rat Pack, who famously pretended to be slightly drunk during his live acts and appearances, so in the UK we would call him a " Piss Artist " so when Corbett said " Pass " that was close enough! :)

Bernard Manning was a British comedian, famous for being a large man who told adult jokes, so the answer " A fat man who tells blue jokes " was aimed at him.

"British Leyland" was the massive nationalised UK car manufacturer of the 1970s that was comfortably the most disastrous business organisation in the entire history of human commerce. Or possibly worse.

Mastermind is a quiz show that’s been running on the BBC since 1972, with only a few years’ break at the turn of the century, and is still on the air. Ronnie Barker is doing a pretty good impersonation of the original quizmaster, Magnus Magnusson, who was an Icelandic Scotsman with a good educated Scots accent - he started the phrase “I’ve started, so I’ll finish” when the time limit sounds, which is still a catchphrase on the show. The format of the show, with the competitor being asked non-stop questions while seated in a dark studio with the lights on him, was inspired by the original producers’ experience of being interrogated by the Gestapo when he was captured in world war 2.

this is utter genius. Most may not know who they’re referring to but I know them all. Trust me, this is one of the best comedy sketches ever written. We’ll never see this brilliance again tragically 🥺😢💔

The next must see The Two Ronnies, Swedish made simple sketch perhaps their 2nd most famous sketch, make sure you watch the full almost 4 minute long version or you will miss a large and important bit (some reactors have accidently watched the cut down version).

You two, especially Jess, have a great sense of humour and seem to get British randomness. For the undisputed king of British random, try Bob Mortimer. Any of the Would I Lie to You compilations would be a good start.

This sketch was meant to be recorded twice - one rehearsal in front of the audience, followed by the actual recording to be broadcast. After the rehearsal bit, both Ronnies decided they couldn't go through it again, so the rehearsal became the ONLY ever recording of this classic sketch. Also, it was never performed in any of their stage shows, when touring Australia. Therefore, what you were witnessing was the only ever performance they made of it. And it very nearly ended up on the cutting floor without being broadcast.

@@samhilton4173 Yeah but the point that was being made was that some of the jokes would need some knowledge of British personalities, and we must assume that not everyone abroad would be aware of them. Nothing to do with how old any one is.

Yes Mastermind was a quiz show they were satirising, the year of the sketch was 1980.

The man who wrote this sketch nearly threw it away. He wrote One Foot in the Grave. I think Americans need to research some of the answers. British Leyland was a nationalised vehicle manufacturer that was notorious for sub standard quality if they weren’t on strike.

In mastermind they typically have two rounds for each contestant, if I remember correctly... One being a specialist subject submitted by the contestant, the other being general knowledge... The concept here being that he submitted for his specialist subject the concept that was presented... Not exactly something the show would allow, but a funny concept based on it... It does help if you know the people who are being talked about, but I think the double meanings are still kinda funny, even if you don't fully know them all because you can imply some of it.

😊 😊 Master Mind is a quiz where each of the 4 contestants answer 2 sets of questions,one set is on a subject chosen by the contestant,which they have time to study beforehand ,the second are general knowledge questions set by the show ,they have no previous knowledge of those questions,most correct answers wins , it's a bit intimidating for contestants because they sit the black chair with the studio lights dimmed and a spotlight on them .❤❤.

There's a serious quiz called mastermind in the uk 1972 too the modern day,two ronnies was a parody. You'd have to google some names to properly understand luckily i knew the people because im a certain age & remember the original but it still makes me think was the previous question was & vicer vercer.bernard manning fat bloke who told blue joke.on the real quiz you can say pass if you don't know the question what was funny when corbett said pass barker said near enough insinuating the proper answer was piss or piss artist,i think from memory that was referring to the singer artist dean Martin a crooner & actor.

Porridge is brilliant. But Ronnie Barker also did Open all Hours which had David Jason, who went on to be Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses.

This one I get because I saw it at the time. But I left England in 1978 so there are lots of programs/skits I don't understand/find funny because (i) I missed out on current affairs, (ii) no longer understand words used, (iii) grew up. I can recommend "8 out of 10 cats does countdown", "Would I lie to you" and "QI". They're aĺl BBC and so subject to disappearance without notice.

I don't know whether you're doing it intentionally or it's happening somehow else but whenever you laugh it's 'ducking' the audio of the material you are responding to so that your listeners can't hear what comes next. I suggest that you just listen back to this video as a 'channel visitor' to see what I mean. It definitely spoils the overall enjoyment!

This was done during a live stream. Usually we record our reactions which gives us separate audio tracks I can adjust while editing. I wasn't able to do that here. Everything was on one audio track. I totally agree with you. So sorry for the poor quality on this one.

Mastermind is a quiz show. Four contestants, 2 two minute rounds per contestant. First round, which this sketch was emulating, was a specialist round. The second round is a general knowledge round. Bedlam was the nickname for 'The Bethlehem Hospital' in London, which at one time housed the mentally ill! British Leyland was a British car manufacturer who pretty much only ever produce awful cars that were shoddily made. Margaret Thatcher, you probably know as the Prime Minister of the UK during the whole of the 80s. (79 - 90 IIRC). She was incredibly unpopular, though oddly perhaps, far from the worst PM we've ever had.

Singer was a manufacturer of buses. British Leyland was a motor company that manufactured cars but was a circus as the management & unions were fighting each other all the time & the cars produced were poor quality.

Much of this, of course, may be lost on North Americans on the grounds that it treats of domestic situations / events. I have to say tgat during the twain`s hayday I wasn`t a fan. They normally worked for the BBC ( in the 1970`s ) and I - being a working class lad - found the BBC far too posh for me. But, aye, it was a genius ( or two ) that wrote this. Another favourite of mine is when Ronnie Barker gave a church sermon in Cockney Rhyming Slang, notwithstanding there`s more to CRS than one meets in the video.

Who's dean martin ,AN ARTIST,what type PASS near enough ,next question was london bus make corbett said singer but he was still referring to the singer dean Martin who soposidly had a drink problem hence piss artist.youll have to write it all down to fully understand plus Google the ones you don't ,methylated spirits ,paint strippers you get the picture, even started first sentence when he asked his name which wasn't part of the sketch .
