The initial mistake they made was in trying to audition in England - probably not a good idea if you're Scottish, though if they just went straight to America if it was anywhere outside Scotland in the first place, they more likely would have immediately been seen as a bigger deal and got their talent taken more seriously, even before their Californian personas - which they could have used like their alt character alter egos or something (some rapping musicians do it), there is definitely a market for it there, but it's not exclusive to them just because of the country they came from, even Vanilla Ice did a similar thing with his background claiming to be from another state there than he was and when that came out it kind of made him come off 'not being real' as they would say. Although with their Californian personas they did just about break through into the mainstream as they were increasingly becoming more and more popular, but when Sony's merger and subsequent job losses left them without supporters in the record company and their planned first single was delayed for at least 6 months as the label was forced to focus on other acts. Boyd had left to get married and his wife was pregnant so he left the group, moved back to Scotland, and got work in the oil industry. Bain then continued performing as Brains on a smaller scale, but he subsequently just came out and revealed the hoax, it probably wouldn't have mattered as much if they waited till blowing up first then revealing it.

Yes because they tried to launch their careers from England as Scots, not a good idea as they said we can't sell 'Scottish rap' - which is funny when you realise that rap actually came from Scotland they say. @@REALCrazyCritic even if it is true its meaningless. d12 without eminem is only a mid-level act and when they have toured the uk, like a lot of hip hop acts from the states at that level, they have tended to get local acts to fill the bill, some of which can be hilariously bad. ive seen absolute nobodies support public enemy, jurassic 5, etc at 1000-2000 capacity venues
