It was actually a reference to a cut plotline that was in the books. It foreshadowed that Saruman had spies in the Shire who brought it back with them. Sarumon and Grima don't die at this point in the book, Similar to the non-extended version of the movie, they survive. However, in the book, they escape to the shire and use their agents, (Might have been the Sachville Baggins) to take over the Shire.

I just love the little reference to Fellowship of the Ring at 0:36 If you remember when Pippin talks about second breakfast Aragorn throws him an apple and he looks to the sky in confusion.. Here he finds an apple and does the same. "Where do all these apples come from?!". Easily overlooked.

Personally I just love that the chicken is there, because it suggests that an Uruk-Hai was cooking it, perhaps as Saruman's dinner, perhaps as their own and then just as they'd finished, a collection of pissed off trees climbed over the walls and attacked.

It was key to a plot point that appears in the last book, but it was eventually cut in the last film. In which Saruman took control over The Shire, which also resulted in its burning.

In the fellowship, pippin was complaining about how hungry he was while the Hobbits and "Ranger" We're on that grey rocky hill. Ranger tossed an apple from behind and pippin hadn't realized he was the one who had thrown it, so he looked up at the sky like it was a miracle. Here it shows the apple in the water and pippin picks it up, looking up at the sky once again in awe lol.

@@tadstrange1465 ya it's one of the distinctions between the books and the movies. In the books, it's clearly more tobacco, however in the movies, they imply that it has weed like qualities. Ie, Saruman said to Gandalf, "Your love of the halflings leaf has clearly slowed your mind", I wonder why it would slow his mind. And let's be honest, the Hobbits are a mellow bunch who don't like to go too far from their houses. Eat too much and like a quiet life where nothing much happens. It's a change that's very compatible with the Hobbit's way of life

Ward Huyskes In the prologue of the book, it is pretty much implied to be a form of tobacco. "All that could be discovered about it [the custom of smoking pipe-weed] in antiquity was but together by Meriadoc Brandybuck (later Master of Buckland), and since he and the *tobacco* of the Southfarthing play a part in the history that follows....." Not to mention that the call it "Old Toby", probably a shortening for tobacco.

There are now enough LOTR fans that an enterprising person could found a grocery store, "Saruman's Storeroom" or "Hobbit Pantry"... just to sell all the sort of food items Tolkien wrote into the book. : ) Yes a.... grocery CHAIN... like Trader Joe's... but hobbit foods... lembas of course too but it would be very expensive and not always available.

There's something I find funny about the scene. This takes place right after the trees break the dam and flood the whole war base. How was it that this one room barely took any damage and all the good food didn't get knocked down? I mean you do see a few apples corn and wine floating in the water. But I see whole wheats of bread that don't even look like they had a single drop of water on them. That's just something I noticed about the scene anyway.

Let me get this straight. Saruman is powerful enough to alter weather at great distances, is powerful enough to beat Grand Dope the Gray in one on one combat, but he stood by powerless while some walking trees laid waste to his entire home base? That's worse than ridiculous.

Saruman lost most of his power once Gandalf returned and took the title of the White from him. :) After Gandalf died fighting the Balrog, the Valar gave him life again and gave him Saruman's old title of the White. As soon as that happened, Saruman essentially got fired as a wizard, and would have started losing his power, until eventually all that remained would be his staff, which shatters in the Extended Edition when Gandalf confronts him in Return Of The King. :)

Besides what Floyd said: You have to remember that one of Sarumans greatest powers laid with his words, which could sway kings and wizards. When he is revealed to all as an agent of evil and a generally deceptive cunt, his words had little sway no more. The whole story of Saruman and Grima is one of the consequences of deception.
