Hey Staggs, I trust your experience with a question I have. Is anyone in the hunting saddle community setting chain anchors when one sticking? If you know what tree you want to hunt, you could set the anchor the first time you climb with paracord pulled through the chains. When you come back the next time to hunt, just pull your rappel rope up through the chain with your paracord. Your rappel rope will girth hitch the chain and you’ll have a tether that won’t need pushed up the tree as you climb. Coming from sport climbing it seems like it could be a safer way to climb, if you’re consistently climbing the same tree.
That sounds like what a lot of guys do who want to hunt the same tree over and over again and they just SRT back up the next time around... Never heard of them using a chain anchor, but it makes sense. I personally rarely hunt the same tree back to back, as I'm trying to bounce around and not get patterned by the deer. Even when we think we got in and out clean, the scent footprint we leave behind usually gives us away.
I had an order for the original scout along with everything else needed to get into one-sticking. Thanks for doing this video, I called Dan this morning and upgraded to the new UP! Keep up the good work, thanks for all you do.
I've got a pair of Beast minis sitting in my archery room... getting ready to do about a 5-stick comparison of some of the really high-end sticks on the market right now. And I've owned what I consider the best available (EWO Ultralights) for a long time. I still leave them at home because there's just nothing like walking into the woods with 4 lbs while wearing your saddle plus your bow.
I find it amusing how hard and sweaty one sticking is by all these people that haven’t tried it 😆. Ive added 2-3 cranford steps around the back of the tree now and boy is it a sweet deal!
I mean, it’s no harder walking up an aider than it is a set of sticks? And if you start sweating by literally hanging in place allowing the rope to support you while you’re pulling the stick up ... well, my guess is you were sweating LONG before the climb on the way to the tree. 😊
The video of yourself, son and the other dude....I believe his name was Scott.....you've convinced me this WILL be my method of hunting this coming season. Love all your videos, gear tests are relative and to the point. My question to this particular video is "will this style platform be good for all day hunts?" I go in in the morning and I don't come out till dark and my concerns are about standing surface and my feet getting tired. Keep up the great work! Hunt hard and stay safe. Cheers
Thanks for the kind words; they are much appreciated! Makes doing all these worth it :) For an all-day hunt... I'm taking a Trophyline Mission in with me to enable alternate standing, sitting, and moving around way more so than on any other saddle platform. That way, I'd have all the advantages of a hang-on COMBINED with a saddle -- the ultimate "hybrid" setup.
@@StaggsintheWild thanks for the reply and input. I thought you may say that. Wuth the added real-estate just makes more sense. Terrific channel by the way
Well dang, Mr Staggs looks like a spider Ninja jumping up and down on the UP stick. Imma have to order one and what not just to say I can do the same. For hunting purposes I can see how the UP would be a good solution for reducing the need for lugging around a separate platform. All that said, I can barely catch my breath with all these changes coming to one sticking I’ll tell you what.
So, I just received my U.O.S the other day & I got the Harken Cam Cleat but, I was just curious why you like the Shafer Cam Cleats Better??? I was a little worried to begin w/ because I weigh right around the 230-240lbs mark....
I have the straight Scout and love it! It looks like the Scout and the UP have about the same amount of room from the tree but the integrated stand off is a great idea! Do you think DanO will be offering a straight UP sometime in the future? Awesome video by the way!
Not a 1-sticker. Love the platform but disappointed my Lone Wolf sticks won’t stack with it. If mods have already been addressed to allow, I’d appreciate a link. Thx!
Great video Greg. Like others I was hoping for a more of flat platform. I hope the interest in a flat one will get DanO to make some. Are you going to do a side by side review of the monarch on top of a 1” tube?
You for got the step also in the weight comparison. That’s another 2.7oz for the ultralight step. Step and standoff for a total of 5.8oz. That make the difference about 26oz.
Great review sir!! I've watched alot of your videos and I'm sure I've missed it somewhere, what aider do you use and length step with your ultimate one stick? 2 step 3 step? Enjoy your videos and appreciate your time you and your son put into them. I know everybody is different but was just curious what you ran.
Thanks, and great question! My step distance is 22" and Gabe's is 19"... I had no problems with mine for about 98% of the season, but it did get JUST a bit tight to stretch out to in January. I have another One Stick on its way to my house today that I had built with three 17" steps to play with and see which I like best. My thought is I may use the two-step 22" version for the majority and go to the three-step 17" aider when it gets later in the year -- unless I end up liking it a lot more, LOL!
Thanks alot for the quick response!! Really helped shed some light on what to go with or at least narrow my decision down some lol.....Like you said it can be overwhelming with all the choices now. Look forward to your videos!
I'd have to have one in my hands to do a fair evaluation; I do like its clean lines, and the cutout for the full-bury amsteel ropes that we all use is a thoughtful touch. I'm not so sure about the oversized bottom step, as my thoughts are that's just a place to continue climbing up onto the top platform and a place to hold your aider. Now, the slotted cutouts to slip an aider in and out of is sweet, and perhaps my favorite detail on the product. I myself recently ordered a second complete Ultimate One Stick with a different aider length than my first one... with the Ion, someone could just have a couple or even more aider lengths/step distances and interchange them easily. Admittedly, I ordered a second UOS as a backup too, so it wasn't JUST because I wanted a different aider length; I could just slice the threads on the aider and sew a new one on, but those slots will make it easy to swap out aiders, no doubt. The platform is listed at 7X10", which isn't a lot larger than the UP's 5.5X10", which then tapers out to 13.5" with a 2.5" down-angle. For me, even the 16 ozs more that the UP comes in over my original UOS is noticeable when carrying it in my hand; I'm not so sure I would want to go up almost two full pounds over what I hunted with last year; that would be about a 50% increase in weight. But, again, those are just early thoughts without ever holding the product.
Thank you. I should be getting Iowa tag this year and going to 1 stick saddle hunting. I don’t want to spend a day putting up stands and then taking them down. I will be getting the biggest platform so it will be like you said “ hybrid”. I do like that Ion features. But will also be carrying a 5 pound platform. I think a light 1 stick would be a better option.
@@benclark5373 I'm not sure I said 5 lbs (if I did I misspoke), but certainly a pound or two isn't unreasonable... I remember back a few years ago when I was HARD core into P90X and monitored every freaking calorie that went into my body for about five months... even doing THAT, it would still fluctuate a pound or two given the day... that's why I say that. :)
For a guy that walks 1-2 miles, is the ultimate lower worth the extra weight or better to keep the standard bottom step and cut the weight? What is the weight difference between the ultimate one stick UP version with and without the ultimate lower step? First time soon to be saddle hunter. Thanks. Michael
I personally prefer the old double step … the ULS does move the aider a bit further from the tree, so there that. However, with the industry-leading standoffs I’ve never found that to be a problem.
@@StaggsintheWild I looking to get i to one sticking and can’t decide between what top platform to use and was wondering which you thought would be best for a sitter? I can’t decide between the EWO LP or between the OOAL lil Joe or monarch. I am predominately a sitter with knees against the tree or straddle the tree use the ring of steps. I was using the wild edge steps this past season.
@@DrMadMax I’d go either UP or LP in a flat version … I use the angled UP because I’m predominantly a leaner. I like the footprint of the UP but if you were trying to shave every ounce the LP is a good option.
Yes. You'll be tight to the tree, and there's certainly not as much maneuverability room as if you were on a Mission or even EDP from Trophyline, but there's enough footroom to stand straight up.
I appreciate the work you put in your videos.. I am on the fence between scout and UP platform on ultimate one stick. It sounds like your sticking to the scout. How solid is the scout against tree for kick out shots around tree? My tether and rappel rope are seperate. Will the groove in the UP accept a 11m rope? Are you sticking with scout platform due to the weight difference? Thanks in advance
Hi Steve, and thanks for the nice words. I've actually spent most of the second half of this season hunting off the U.P. It's far more comfortable for longer sits, and I really like the angle built into the front. It has little angles on either side that make fantastic hand grabs to pull yourself up with when making your moves, and offer great leverage points to push off with when navigating around a tree. The 11mm rope might not fit ALL the way in the groove, but it will still fit in enough to hold the stick in place to give you both your hands free. The Scout won't kick out either if you do decide to use it... I actually hunted off the angled Monarch a bunch at the beginning of this season due to its lighter weight and I was carrying it in by hand. In the latter half of October, I switched to the UP and began strapping it to a tiny backpack that would hold an outer jacket for the colder sits. Hope that helps... feel free to follow up with any additional questions!
@@StaggsintheWild if you go to "build your own stick" at the end it gives you a summary of everything. The "top of stick option #1: U.P." is listed as 49 oz.
@@kongvue8940 the UP by itself weighs exactly 2.0 lbs; I just weighed it apart from the stick again in preparation for an upcoming review I’m doing on EWO’s LP new platform top. There were a few prototype tops floating around there initially, as I had one of those too.
@@kongvue8940 they’re two completely different animals to me … it’s a very nice offering, but sized similarly to the Monarch. If you’re looking for more footroom - which most people considering the UP are - I’d stick with that. It really depends on what you’re looking for. The new platform is .42 lbs lighter, but gives up a bit of room obviously.
I have the slanted scout now and still plan on pairing it with the EDP. I think it will give me the best of both worlds, for early season hunts where I'm not out all day or after work I'll just bring my stick as I lean most of the time anyways. For those longer sits or all day sits during the rut I'll definitely bring both and run them side by side. To each their own, but I still don't know if this is big enough for me to use on an all day sit.
What length are you using for the UOS? I am 5’10” so I figure we are comparable. Also would you prefer the slanted or straight if you are carrying the mission platform also?
I’m using a 12” stick ... my aider is a two-step aider at 22” apart. I’ve been completely happy with that length so far ... there were only a couple times I felt stretched. I did just order another UOS to play with and have as a backup as well with a three-step aider at a 17” step distance, but I haven’t had a chance to play with it yet.
@@williamjenkins8566 I'll be totally honest and tell you I don't do all-day sits... I just don't have the patience for them. I've done a couple, and killed one wallhanger on one of them -- 15 minutes before dark. On 3-4 hour sits? No problem.
How noisy is it moving around on a pine tree. I have a hard time with sticks with platforms getting tight to pine tree. I usually need something to cam over to get it tight.
The good thing about one-sticking is you are in complete control of moving the stick up and down the tree, so you can do it as quiet as you want ... the only noise is going to come from setting the stick by pulling down on it before you climb up onto it; there’s no doubt there will be be a bit of scraping noise against the bark, but there would be no matter what method you used.
Prices are insane , what the hellnis ewo thinking ? Almost 300 for a climbing stick??? No way , no how , not now , not ever, there is premium then there is insane . That price is insane.
@@StaggsintheWild I strongly believe you made no attempt to source the parts , in under an hour talking to my local aching part I had a quote for way way way less . If I knew more about patents I would probably order a run of them as I could double my money and still save people a chunk over this guy's prices .
@@nonetheless01 if you can build a similar quality stick for way less, more power to you. I don’t make or lose a dime based on you or anyone else buying or not buying this stick, as I have zero affiliation with them. But I literally know dozens of guys who have reached the same conclusion as me. Like I said: congrats to you if you’re one of the first to figure out how to build it cheaper with the same quality components.
I like it but will get in to one sticking. As soon a the rip off cool factor goes away. Those sticks could sell for 90. To 100. Dollar. Hunters helping hunters. Right.
I completely understand the sentiment... When I first started looking at getting some NICE sticks, I thought I'd just buy all the parts and assemble everything myself and save a lot of money. I even went online and to metal fab shops and was going to buy everything as "wholesale" as I could. What I ended up finding was that some of these guys aren't making the killing I thought they were, LOL. Not when you factor EVERYTHING in (the amsteel rope, the cam cleat, the bolts, the standoffs, etc.)
@@StaggsintheWild I understand stand there is a price for new innovation. An a Beast stick is nicer then a Hawk. But not for times as nice. Someone will become the Ford of one sticking.
Pfft... you must not have grown up where it routinely hits 100 degrees and the humidity is so thick you can cut it with a knife, LOL... 45 degrees is like almost wintertime to us! :)
