This Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we're highlighting Americans with diverse backgrounds making a difference. Today we feature, Toshiko Akiyoshi and her work "Tuning Up," performed by The U.S. Army Blues.
Toshiko Akiyoshi is a Japanese American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader. Her compositions, influenced by both traditional Japanese music and bebop jazz, often feature complex arrangements and unique harmonies. Akiyoshi has been nominated 14 times for Grammy Awards, was the first woman to win Best Arranger and Composer in the 2007 Readers' Poll for Down Beat magazine, and was named NEA Jazz Master by the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts.

You guys completely missed the point of the opening "tuning note". All the horn players are supposed to actively tune up/warm up/whatever - a little chaos until everyone finally lands on the A. Then, and only then, does the piece move on to the groove and the Bb.

Good band - but they need to loosen up. The opening of Tuning Up is supposed to sound like a band literally tuning up until the melody drops. I know it’s a military band but come on.
