Due to the size of the radome, if the cockpit was traditional tandem layout, the pilots view of the carrier would be obscured during landings, so it was offset to the left giving the pilot much better visability. The radar op had no need to see outside the plane so sitting him lower makes sense although was probably not too nice to fly, a bit like the Canberra PR 9. So ugly, kinda, but functional.
If that is the purpose of having the offset cockpits, why not put the pilot on the right so they can better see they towers on the carrier? It would make more sense in my mind for it to be on the right rather than the left. Anyone have a good idea on why they put him on the left rather than the right?
@@greg5435 Very simple. There is little need for the pilot to see the Island of a carrier. But the pilot ABSOLUTELY have to see the Optical Landing System (those set of lights that tells him if he's on the correct glide slope on landing) which so happens to be positioned on the port side of the flightdeck.
Heya Phly, phor my phiphth vehicle request, I ask that you take out the Phrench AMX-50 Surbaissé, but there is a catch! You must *only* use HE. It should be an easy challenge, as there is a 6 second reload, and the HE penetrates 39 Millimeters of Armour. Good luck, and have Phun! (Day 42)
The Sea Vixen was an all-weather fighter with a huge radome on the nose. Deck landing requires a good view, so the pilot was put to one side of the fuselage so he could see the carrier round the radome.
@@bruhmomentum2901 You can test them in a test flight. If you launch the Red Top from over 2,5km away behind the MiG-15, it will not reach it. An AIM-9B would reach it.
@@ollilaine6763 This is funny since it did reach it but its prob because i launch them from higher alt because vixen aint no dog fighter hes a zoom and boomer except 2,5km range (they almost always hit their target from high alt and oh boy i know that i bought vixen)
@@bruhmomentum2901 From a higher altitude, it uses gravity to keep its speed up for longer. At a high altitude, the high drag becomes more difficult to notice due to lower air density.
Fun fact: Red Tops are bugged rn, they completely run out of juice after about 3 seconds of flight. Not as in "no more burner" juice, but "can't catch up with a vampire".
Hey phly, I have a vehicle request. Because of the new update, custom loadout filters allow the saab-105 and sk-60 to become much more potent, as they can carry missiles, bombs, and gun pods at once. 8.3 sweden also has a lot of variety, and 7.3 is pretty fun as well. Of course it can be pretty frustrating at times, but I would love to see you try. There is also the new swedish spaa that you can play at 8.3. Thanks for the consideration!
Saab105G with 4x1000lb bombs and 2 guns or missiles guns and bombs is amazing, the new SPAA also has Leopard 2a4 hull with composite so it's well protected and fast
The sea vixen is gorgeous the rio seat was lowered because his job was "supposed" to be watching the radar and monitoring weapons systems. They were trying to keep it more aerodynamic
The Sea Vixen has RADAR slaving so that's super helpful and in theory it can now all aspect a AB jet. You may also be able to use Red Nose rockets as a sort of 'gun' and/or as a sort of 'flare'.
One of the worst Sea Vixen accidents was when one disintegrated in flight at Farnborough Airshow in 1952, whilst approaching the crowd from the front. The engines, being heavy, continued moving forwards and fell into the crowd.
I love your dedication when you rammed that guy. That’s the best what you could have done for your wingman there. Thank you for your service. Amazing scene… probably my favorite from the last years
you were talking about strong engines without afterburners, i suggest you to try out the Etendard IVM, he is really fast and have insane guns and maneuvrability
Sea Vixen had two trays of unguided, spin stabilised rockets under the nose in addition to the Red Top missiles. Originally had Fire Streak for astern attacks on Russian Badgers.
This thing actually rips it up in its BR range especially when at your own BR or get down tier its strong AF. The F-104 is pretty strong these days seeing how it faces Jets that cant even get close to its speed.
There was a prototype with nose mounted guns. Gaijin said they wouldn't add it because it never saw production. We now have the Yak 141 with "Assumed" weaponry if it had left the prototype stage, but that's just standard Gaijin double standards.
IIRC one of the principal problems of the Sea Vixen was that the high tail plane would still before the main wing leading to an unrecoverable loss of control at high AoA, something that was highlighted in the test flights of this and similar designs at the time. I'd have to check through my books but I *think* it was one of, if not, the last high tailed aircraft used in a combat role by the British military. AFAIK they never fitted guns to the aircraft, one of the points of the design in fact was that it didn't use any.
Red Tops have some of the shortest range for IR missiles it’s literally equivalent to something like an SRAAM or R-3S reaching maybe a bit more than 1.5km in some scenarios
Its a two seater but the weapon operator didnt need to see out... It was lethal because the plate didnt 'eject' properly so at the pilot punched out, the navigator would punch THROUGH, or more accuratly, flatten INTO.
Also now that Air RB has a lot of modern ground AI, which includes Gepards and stuff, not only is the RWR constantly beeping you're also getting locked all the time! It's so annoying haha
Sea Vixen operation timeframe... from 1959 thru 1974. It had a higher than average loss rate and was deemed to be too expensive to operate. Hence, its retirement.
I seem to remember reading that there was supposed to be a Sea Vixen FAW3 that incorporated a gun/cannon. The Navy had already decided to replace the Vixen with the Phantom. Killing the idea before it left the drawing board. One of these with a gun would have been epic. Like a fleet air arm F14
Phly the F-104 is at a better BR than it was before, but you will still mostly fight planes with missiles and flares. That being said I would LOVE to see play the Starfighter again!
The western military doctrine of the F-4 jet era was that we had superior locking missile technology and didn’t see the need for a main gun. Of course once f-4’s started getting shot down over Vietnam after being left defenseless once all their payload was gone, they started fitting them with gun pods
5:23 I'd really love to know how you do some of this stuff with the radar. WT doesn't really like to explain what everything does or how it works, or how to manually select targets using the interface. And 7:00 yes. The American F-104A fights at 8.7 a lot since it's only 9.3. It gets a downtier a LOT since the A-10 and F-5 platforms dominate the 10.7 range, but it sits just outside that uptier threshold, so it prefers to get downtiers with the Sea Vixen, G91, and F86. The Italian F-104G suffers the same BR threshold, where it likes to downtier more than uptier based on how many premium players there are at those BR's and it being just outside the next rank. It's especially bad compression now that they have 16 person lobbies.
The ghost missile just…LOL. Also RN rockets are a “good” alternative to having guns. If you can get behind someone they usually give you broadside when you start shooting rockets. It’s great.
I literally grinded out most of british tech tree with this thing by just running from enemies and turning on their 6 when they break out of pursuit. Gotta say, it's a great plane but one has to be careful with red tops cause despite their huge explosive mass and blast radius, it doesnt always kill when hit. And shooting them at ranges greater than 1.8km is not advised, especially if you're chasing someone and you both go at > mach 0.9.
It's not surprising to hear how many sea vixens were lost in accidents. One the most famous Air show crashes in the UK happened at farnbourgh in 1952 with a prototype sea vixen.
One of the more famous ones that was lost in an accident was the 1952 Farnborough Airshow disaster when the prototype of the Sea Vixen the DH.110 broke up while performing a maneuver. Debris from the plane crashed into the crowed of spectators, killing 29 and injuring 60, at the time it was the deadliest airshow disaster in history till the Ramstein air show disaster in 1988.
I love how English/British aircraft are either elegant, efficient designs like the Spitfire or Vulcan, or completely strange looking things that make Russian aircraft look sane in comparison.
I love the sea vixen. it was my first british top premium and i dont regret buying it bc it carried me from like 7.0 to 11.3 air rb in the british tech tree
I totally agree with you, except for me, the vixen got me from rank 1 to rank 4 Britain air so far. I tend gravitate toward unique vehicles so it’s no surprise that I love the gameplay and have no regrets buying it
@@retrotrooper3957 Best jet you’ll play. You will play a high of 104 and Harriers and a low of flareless dog shit. Play it like a strike craft, fly in, get to 5k and dive in and don’t look back. Lead missile and you will be the savior of the day. So not stray from that strat. Do not let enemies talk shit to you in chat to change your mind. Bomb if you want, but take 4 Redtops and expect 1/2 kills per load out, you’ll learn that you can watch a whole battle unfold and you will save a lot and Change the battle immensely. Fly a head on but bail much sooner than expected. You can out climb a lot. But if you need to, lead them back to the airfield. Do not feel like a bitch. It’s all about you and nothing else. Do not turn fight and do not fight alone. If you know you have support, let the emery thing they have the fight, you will help them with your speed and climb rate. Vixen is great for many thing in this game.
Okay, so the Sea Vixen was really a “Frankenstein” of what it was supposed to be. The reason for the cockpit setup, is because of, more or less, problems that weren’t accounted for in the original design. Basically, in order to save the program, Dehavilland had to come up with some “creative” solutions to keep the program from total failure. The big problem was the aircraft’s size. You can only go so big for an carrier aircraft. Trying to fit all of the systems intended for the aircraft, along with the unforeseen engineering changes, were pretty significant speed bumps for the program, along with British politics of the era. This is the final product of all of that. Really a fascinating, if not frustrating story to read about. Military Aviation history channel made a great walk-around video about this aircraft. The reason for the radar operator being beside and recessed from the pilot was, simply darkness. That allows the radar operator to see the scope much better and call the returns to the pilot. The radar operator was also facing backwards in the aircraft. Gaijin got that wrong.
I don't have any knowledge for as to why the cockpit was designed the way it was, but as an engineer, I can tell you that the uglier something is the more engineering went into it. We generally start with a pretty and symmetrical design, but sometimes those don't work and we stray further and further away from pretty and into practical.
I've been using the Sea Vixen as a team mater support plane , where I identify a teammate woth 1-2 enemies on their tail and drop in from high altitude and get behind the pursuer(s) launch a red top and rocket my way back to space. Typically i. Wont get followed at 8.7 - 9.0 because of how fast the Vixen gains altitude.
My main gripe with it is the fact that it doesn’t have guns. Even with good AAM, my primary weapon is usually the guns cause they’re harder to dodge than missiles.
Anything 10.0 is basically 9.0 to 10.3 because there is no 11.0 BR. Jets might have that rank, but there are so few of them that they end up in 10.0/10.3 and sometimes 12.0. 11.3 and lower are your benchmarks for fun on US tree. F-4j/F-4s at 11.3 in a 10.3 down tier are amazing fun. F5c at 10.3 the same boat. If you want a really fun time try out the F-4C again. In its BR its a stomper, especially when down tiered.
Bruh I play so much top tier that I've had small panic attacks sitting in my living room after hearing a phantom "beep beep beep" Its terrifying make it stop
