I’m so glad you actually said what James Charles did. He sent nude photos to minors, that’s an actual crime and can put you on a registry. So many people water it down and that’s not fair to his victims. I also don’t believe for a second that his influencer friends aren’t still connected and engaging with him off camera/social media. Who decides to promote his make up line will show exactly where their morals stand.
My pet peeve with "clean beauty", as someone with very sensitive skin, aside from claiming not to have something in their formulas like fragances or whatever when it's not true, is how difficult they make to find the complete list of ingredients, the real one, with everything. They hide it so much that you almost have to go to the deep web to find if their freaking mosturizer actually has whatever ingredient you're sensitive to on it.
Yesssss! I have an allergy to coconut, which is uncommon I guess. I have to bolo for coconut and any derivatives of coconut oils/esters/etc. It's been so hard to confirm the lack of coconut 😮💨
One of my biggest pet peeves about the beauty industry, is the "clean" marketing tactic. I cannot stand it when companies make up BS for customers to be scared of just to sell us a product to fix it. I HATE IT SO MUUUUCH
Your entire segment about the celebration of problematic influencers in the beauty community and the brushing over of actual crimes committed by those influencers was perfection. Please say it louder for people in the back still giving these people platforms 👏
I'm following a few male beauty content creators and they are amazing (Luis Torres, Juan David Ferrazo, Hindash, Martin Catalogne, Robert Welsh, Wayne Goss and you). Their content does not relate with any kind of drama and it's so nice to see that part of the beauty industry. We need more beauty and less drama ❤
Ooo you should have James Welsh on the podcast and talk about the ugly side of the beauty industry! He does a series on his channel about lawsuits and marketing ploys and examples of the beauty industry being super harmful. So it would be super cool if you guys did a podcast episode together!❤
As a makeup lover, with no one else who I can talk to this extent, I want to thank you for this podcast. I keep yelling “yes” , “ i know, right” , “that’s what I’ve been saying!” . I find it so god damn weird that people don’t have the capacity to learn and research anymore, for example all this ingredient information I found out about 15 years ago, Paula’s choice book was the holy grail.
My aunt gave me the first copy of Paula Begoun’s book when I was a teen in 1988, back then her book was called ‘Blue Eyeshadow Should be Illegal’ 😂 I spent the entire Christmas vacation poring over every page and sucking up all the information, what a revelation it was. That’s what turned me into a skincare junkie eons ago 😂
As someone who has multiple allergies, I get so irritated at being told something is “natural” or “clean.” I quit using my Mary Kay products that I loved because they were making me sneeze to death. And then I had to practically come to blows with the sales lady because she kept texting me that their products were “natural” and she wouldn’t leave me alone. I don’t care lady! Arsenic is natural, that doesn’t make it good for you. All I care about is will it make me sick? 🤧😩
I have seen someone break out in blisters after using their lipstick. Also their complexion products give some people hives. I sold that crap for a little while.
@@tabithamayer2442 I believe it. I used their cleanser and moisturizer for about two years, and they actually were great on my skin, but I didn’t realize I was allergic. I’m allergic to a few common ingredients in many cosmetic products.
Wow how awful. I completely agree as a fellow allergy of whatever sufferer. I used Mary Kay in the early 90’s and it was my saving grace! Now?? No way. I have had chemical rashes and contact dermatitis and this has suddenly happened with a lot of brands. I used to be able to use L’Oréal mascaras no problem. Now? A for sure visits to my eye dr or dermatologist. I just don’t get it. I’m tired of the lenient laws on marketing in the USA and since pandemic I feel like they really degraded their products with very cheap cheap filler chemicals and irritants. Many of my normal skin friends are now suddenly having issues too. Something weird is going on. I hope you find something you love. ❤
I’m so glad you guys dig into the “clean” product craze. I had no idea what goes into products until my now toddler developed severe eczema at 8 months old. A lot of the “clean” stuff was so much more problematic for him and even included actual allergens like nuts and soy. It’s been a huge learning experience about that labeling means nothing and you really have to dig into ingredients. It’s definitely made me more scrutinize my own products just in terms of not buying gimmicky stuff and looking for good solid formulas that perform at a good price.
Years ago, I tried a pomegranate moisturizer from Burt's Bees. That stuff was so fragranced it triggered an instant migraine; then it burned my skin. That was my epiphany.
The problem with "clean beauty" and other labels like "sugarfree" or "palm oil free" is that it only tells you what it isn't but not what it is. If not Parabens THEN WHAT??
Nepotism: It’s not what you know. But, who you know. 💔 As with the Meghan Trainor controversy, it sounds like a child who was forced to apologize, rather than a true heartfelt apology. So many people have forgotten what an apology really is! 😤
The list of ingredients on the "not clean" list literally contains xanax, anti-depressants, and opiates. Because those are definitely in most eyeshadow palettes😒 the list is so so dumb if you go in and look at the banned ingredients, its just a bunch of things that arent in makeup to begin with😂
@@xtra4life3 what? I'm not talking about that person. I'm talking about the "clean ingredient" lists having things on the list that aren't even used in makeup, such as Xanax, antidepressants and opiates. They just add random shit that has nothing to do with makeup.
The phrase, “caveat emptor,” (let the buyer beware,” is gospel truth in beauty. Also, “clean” beauty can sometimes be anything but, because without preservatives they can go bad quickly and I for sure do not want bacteria or mold on my face. 🤢
I feel you with the airline issue. Just went through my own crap with American, they changed my departing flight from an airport 5min from me to one 2hrs away and at 6am. Had to cancel flights and get new ones and they charge me more- I was pissed to be charged more- so went back and forth for a couple months and finally got some compensation. Don’t give up if the airline tries to blow you off.
Just want to make a correction about ingredient list for the US. I work for a cosmetic company, and any ingredient under 1% can be rearranged so it can appear higher than it actually is. Fyi.
You two have gotten me to play with makeup beyond just lipstick and mascara for the first time since the 80s. I want to thank you for your passion for makeup and creativity, it's made this enby feel femme for the first time in a while
I loved Kevin Aucoin’s personality-and I was devastated when he passed away. I was a teen in the 90’s and obsessed with fashion and makeup and super models and magazines. Love that they brought him up in such a positive way. I have his book “Making Faces” that I bought when it came out and I absolutely treasure it. ❤❤❤ subscribed and will be watching!!
Going back and watching through older videos. So glad you spoke on this, because you're absolutely right about James Charles. And unfortunately, especially now since it's been so long, people aren't/weren't speaking on it. I will never understand how he can do something literally illegal, and what? Be "canceled" for a week? That is your punishment?! It blows my mind how problematic, and borderline felonious, these people can be and still have a platform...still have an audience drooling over their every word. Sooo incredibly messed up and needs people like you guys to stand up and speak up on it.
49:47 I couldn’t agree with you more, Johnny! In the corporate world, it’s called “proximity bias,” which is funny because social scientists (probably working for a huge corporation) trying to fix an issue like this, identified the bias and yet next to nothing is done to correct it.
Appreciate the call out of the hypocrisy and how horrible this impacts the entire community and society with long term ramifications regardless of politics and misunderstandings when we’ve come so far Thank you for your voice and presence and calling us all to both have more understanding, mercy, yet redemption and care in how we behave and approach celebrity, influencers, beauty, and our role in this as well as well as a call to integrity and quality over quantity and true artistic vision
It's so sad to hear that the beauty industry is no different to any other non make-up related industry. It doesn't matter what your qualification is, it only counts if you "know" someone... discouraging, sad and frustrating. Speaking from my own experience. Wish you all the best, Johnny!
I'd love a chat with Kaci Beauty, Lab Muffin Beauty and Cassandra Bankson who talk about the 'clean beauty/skincare' industry and trend and they are good at debunking ❤
Ingredient lists are even more deceptive... all ingredients present below 1% can legally be listed in any order that a brand chooses! So, there may be .000001% of liquid gold, but it may be listed as #7 because of the 1% rule.
Been waiting for this! I just want honest, trustworthy 'influences' to watch. People I can learn from and who I know aren't promoting something crap just to line their pockets. ❤
I could listen to these podcasts all day 🙂. I myself have been a victim of buying something because i didn't really understand the terms. The contour/bronzer confusion is a prime example. I don't think the beauty industry is particularly interested in educating us so we have to educate ourselves and we appreciate you for helping us make the right choices.
I always fly Southwest, and I have never had a problem, I was in events for many years, and I flew several times a month for a long time and always used Southwest, I love Southwest so much. They are totally worth the money.
I totally feel for you about United and American Airlines. I fly Alaska Airlines. Also, thank you for all you said about drama influencers but you spoke to what the problems were and did not make it a personality attack. You both are lovely.
🌟🤗You two beauties are such a delight! This is a great way to spend an hour on Sundays. Always fabulous, fun, and even educational…. but mostly fabulous! 😘💕
I'm actually not much of a makeup girlie and I love the idea of marrying education and artistry. I get overwhelmed with techniques and theory. Almost every industry is so saturated with a growing fast fashion mentality; there's so much over-consumption.
THIS! this is WHY I have watched this channel! Real talk about real things. Hang on, stop just a second we can no longer use a certain brand of photograpic film because of formaldehyde BUT it can be in make up?!? "Clean" make up? What the F
Thank you for addressing the Megan Trainer issue. I am a teacher and I hold two other degrees as well including music. What she said hurt and as my mama used to say, “ if you put a nail in the fence then take it out, you still left a hole!” No matter the apology she still left a huge, hurtful hole… and let’s face the fact that the interview is still up! If you really wanna apologize then take it down never to be heard again!!! I wish the future of beauty was whoever you want to be. Just wanted to say thank you for these podcasts. I’m probably not your target audience as I’m literally old enough to be your mama. 🤣 but you keep me informed in all manner of ways! Blessings from down Alabama way!
This episode was everything. You guys hit every nail on the head. I work for a major beauty retailer, and I am so tired of all these new products every week that I have to put out knowing that damn well by the end of the next week that new viral product is going to be old news and no one is coming in for it. Then we have excess of all this product that doesn’t move and is either taking up way too much room in my tiny back room collecting dust, or the company RTVs it (return to vendor) to be sold at a discounted price or they simply have us destroy it. And that one makes me angry. It’s so wasteful on so many levels. I also think it’s not only on influencers to initiate the change in how the brands are producing, it’s also on us as the consumer. We need to stop running out and buying every new viral product and not giving in to FOMO. This will finally make them see that we value quality over quantity. I want iconic, superbly formulated and thought out beauty products, not the wash rinse and repeat poorly made products. Thanks Johnny and Kevin, you guys are the truth in a shady industry and so appreciate and respect you both deeply 🥰❤
Thank you both for talking about this stuff. I am so, so, so sick of Jeffree Star and James Charles and everyone tolerating or celebrating them for their BS.
Also Kevin is right, there is a fashion, beauty and culture media brands' purge of laying off huge amounts of editors and writers, and Buzzfeed actually did lay off people to soon use ChatGPT for articles especially for quick clickbait
I’m literally laughing and snickering at your United Airlines flight debacle Johnny while I’m in the waiting room at my daughter’s gymnastics class lol. All the moms are looking at me like 🤔🤨..can’t get over the girl handing you the boarding pass🤞🏻😬 🤞🏻 🤦🏼♀️
Additionally, I’m on the part where you guys talk about social media platforms essentially ruining the content you long form creators put out, listening to it sounds almost like IG and all the rest operate like a MLM..it’s like you can be spending every last second of time or last dollar to your name to get an amazing video up but if it doesn’t fit their algorithm bull crap it’s like oh well try again next time 🙄 it’s like there’s no rhyme or reason as to why certain content goes viral and some flop. (Or there is but we haven’t been let it in on the secret) They want everyone to work their asses off posting so the app never lacks content but only so many will be seen/ make it to the top 🫤 something about that business model just reminds me of when I was selling paparazzi jewelry. Invested so much into that company and I was lucky if I broke even at the end of it. Highly recommend NEVER doing that lol
You boys are speaking the truth, I hope it gets heard everwhere. Népotism is so toxic, the right people are NOT in the right place and its applicable in so many areas, commerce, politics, fashion, art, movies, music etc etc .
You’re so right about makeup artists originally coming to social media to escape the corporate world but now have kind of become corporate on RU-vid because that’s what sells and gets views
I love how honest you two are and how you handle the toughest subjects! I love how you are always looking out for everyone those who have skin problems or skin conditions are living with cancer or Both. Thank you so much!!! I have learned so much about what I am putting on my face and skin!
I honestly can't watch the really big influencers, they grind my teeth! Michaela has had so much hate, and yet shes real! J* I just can't get on board with him, I find it so difficult. I'm an MUA, 52 years old and i just cant be doing with the drama they drag around with them! You are both fantastic, both real and honest! Thanks 🎉❤
There are lots of professional MUAs you can follow on social media if that's the type of content you prefer! Pat McGrath, Hindash, Mario Dedanovic, Luis Torres for some examples! Also, a lot of people dislike Mikayla because she has been caught lying about sponsorships, filters, and donations.
Been watching your content for ages but haven't give your podcast a chance until today and let me tell you... The way you're spitting fax is refreshing and uplifting, got me hooked! ✨
One of the things I love about you the most is that you ARE a drama free male in the industry. You are beautiful, talented, humorous, and such an inspiration. I absolutely adore you! I trust your advice completely!
Actually, ingredient lists arent from highest percentage to lowest. The first 10 ingredients are in highest to lowest, and then if it is 1% or less, it can be listed in any order. So the first ingredients are listed from highest to lowest, but not the whole list is listed that way.
I had an airline try to refuse to let me onboard with my dog to Hawai'i when I had all our paperwork both faxed to airline and Hawaii's quarantine station, we already were approved by both. We had already been approved for re-entrance to Hawai'i by the quarantine station a long time prior to our flight.... I have never been one to make a fuss-but I basically told them no, we were already approved by both, and we were getting on the plane. We had been to Hawai'i before, he was a service dog, he was approved by the quarantine station for re-entrance, and we are getting on that plane for work -just because they were uneducated on the process wasn't our fault, and I sure as hell wasn't missing work for their error😂😂😂. And we were totally fine. I think it's sad that the airline employees don't have education on BIG things like that- and like in your case, something that should have been basic knowledge. The cross the fingers and shrug 🤷🏽♀️ had me dying laughing lol what a tw@t move. 😢😂😢😅
Thank you both for talking about toxic beauty influencers and the damage to the LGBTQ+ community that people like James Charles have done. With all the hate being directed at LBGTQ+ people right now, especially trans people, the last thing we need is a problematic influencer acting like their behavior is no biggie. I wish more people would call them out and make a stand because it's just giving the opressors more fuel for their generalizations and hatefulness. 😡 And on that note (😅), loved this episode, really enjoyed your critique of "clean" beauty, you're so on point! 💜 Edit: I used the word "oppressers", but I should have just used the word "bigots", because that's what they are. 🤷♀️
This is my new favorite podcast! You’re both so talented, intelligent, and well-spoken. You guys are so refreshing. You give your takes with honesty but there’s empathy there. 💖💖💖
There was a a whole Last night with John Oliver where he talked about companies paying to be carbon neutral which is like paying to be clean beauty in terms of those types of companies more or less I guess ...either way the episode really open my eyes to things
I absolutely love this channel! You guys are amazing! Also can you pleas film the trip to kohls to return those chairs? Would LOVE to see how that goes!💜💜💜
its the same with people on pr lists its who you know not how good you are or buy their products and rave about them and show them off and how to use them plus it all about how you look i love how honest you both are x
I discovered you just a few months ago and I think you're amazeballs. You're so smart, so creative, so talented and ahem, hello-HILARIOUS!!?? I'm 49, love beauty, love the artistry but I absolutely enjoy the commentary you share. Never think you're not doing "enough" to stay valid in this space. ❤ Love YOU!
Love you both! I would watch to hear you recite the telephone book (does that even exist online? 🤷🏻♀️). Anyway, I love listening to you both-you are funny, intelligent and well spoken. So I will listen to you both every week!
It’s not only United, the entire airline industry is a disaster right now. If you have a multiple stop trip, you can’t make a change to a single stop without destroying the entire reservation and paying THOUSANDS of dollars to cancel and rebook (just call the airline in this case). There’s absolutely no concept of customer service, overbooking the flights in standard industry practice and they can just bump you for any reason, the staff is completely unsupported and untrained. It’s absolutely horrendous.
Well my darlings, I don't know where the hell the beauty journey is going but I do know how very thankful I am to have the good ones like you, Robert Welsh, Erin Parsons and so many others out there fighting the good fight and keeping some semblance of checks and balances out there vis a vis these companies and their shenanigans. I hope that people will learn to slow down a bit and get the FULL story before choosing who they want to align with and/or allow to influence them, I'm so lucky to have a loooong attention span and I can't get enough of this TRUTHERY! I adore this channel and am off to the next episode in the (like 11 hour block🤔) marathon that is helping me clean my house, Chefs kiss you two, take good care! 💕💜
A product can be fragrance free and still have a scent because sometimes fragrances can be used for texture purposes or something that changes the formula of the product in a different way, and its not specifically in that product for the fragrance itself.
😃Thank you for the information about the Neutrogena Hydro Boost moisturizer. I was not impressed with it. My mom used to swear by Neutrogena products back in the day. Well... I'll be taking my Neutrogena Hydro Boost back to Costco and getting my money back!!🤬
When I get too much crap from an influencer, I simply unfollow or unsubscribe, I don't make a big deal of it and I believe most of us humble watchers are the same. You never know until you notice your numbers dwindle.
First, sorry your trip to Richmond was so quick! Second, the Steven Rhodes shirt is 🔥. And Third, you would be surprised how much the conversation about product development applies to other industries as well. Thank you so much for the conversation!
Another interesting podcast. I don’t know much about the beauty industry but I feel like it mirrors society in general. Less quality, quick everything. I find all the output overwhelming. So, the future of beauty more quality & acceptance? Thanks!
Love that you cakes out MT about her comment not even being live. I bet most people didn’t even realize. People with a platform should mind their words. And it’s gross that KK is on AHS😵💫
Dude... your videos are super funny and everyone deserves to be made fun of. That's what comedy is! I love it when a comedian nails "my people". As long as it's not mean spirited, that's literally the point 😊❤ Keep it up my man
I used to work at a paint department and had to deal with describing finishes all the time. The average person really doesn’t get the difference most of the time until they get into an industry where you’re taught the difference.. And the amount of people that would bring me the finish swatch card (just a generic white color with a swatch for each finish) and demand the eggshell “color”… the point of that swatch was simply to showcase how varied a color can look in the various finishes.
Every time I see a new episode I’m so excited I watch right away!! I love you both and the honesty and very real conversations!! Also I’m so thankful you two share your expertise with us common folk instead of with ppl who don’t deserve you
Thanks for teaching me why HydroBoost never worked in over 6 months. I got results w Inky List products within a month. 💜 Watching this!! Such a nice conversation with great topics and hosts!
I am not into the whole clean beauty stuff. To me is really a scam so what I tend to do is read the ingredient list and I have started to follow beauty chemists and getting educated on that area.
I didn't even know what Meghan Trainor said until you two talked about it. All I know is that I viscerally hate her music, each new song worse than the last. I won't watch any short/reel/tiktok that uses her music.
Thank you for talking about clean beauty. I would spend hours looking over ingredients used in products until I finally kinda gave up. Truth is some of the products that work the best use the worst ingredients. I managed to find a few clean beauty products I love but I quit using foundation because it caused my acne and rosacea to get worse. If you have any clean beauty recommendations please let us know! ❤
Our laws are so stringent in the U.K. regarding food, animal feed, skincare and make up and so I’d advise sticking to U.K. brands. Even items not considered ‘clean’ would never add eg fomaldihide as quite simply it is banned like thousands of other products as it is harmful. I don’t understand why the USA Govt seem quite happy for their population to be poisoned, I mean whoever thought up dunking chicken in chlorine would be a good thing to consume must be mad!. The other bit of advice is that the shorter the ingredient list, the less shite is in it to fill it out ok. Good luck 🤞🏻
Jsyk, it's not always what ingredients used but the quality of it and how much. So, clean beauty isn't inherently better than "non-clean" beauty. And clean is an unregulated marketing term. To start, I suggest looking at something like the ingredient readers/glossaries on the EWG or Paula's Choice websites.
@@kellygreengables3936 I know it’s often a marketing buzzword. Even still beauty products that don’t contain those bad chemicals tend to be harder to work with and harder to find in the US. I think I’m just better off paying customs for safer makeup that probably works better than what they sell in the US. 🙃
Ah, so true about the difference between the makeup girls and guys at 14:00! I thought clean beauty just meant it was for a “clean” minimal no-makeup makeup look 🤦🏻♀️🤣 personally I just want products that preform and don’t make my sensitive skin and eyeballs freak out - clean or not, drugstore or high end, I don’t care. TikTok has its own toxicity outside of influencers. TT kind of convinces people (often underage or young enough that they have a limited income) to think they need one holy grail product after the other. When I was 14 I saw makeup trends and products in my YM or seventeen magazine 10x a year, and in movies and TV on occasion and that was it. Now people can binge dozens of “products you must have” in a short chunk of time.
I would love to take a moment that our B&B podcasters actually read the comments and takes the time to “like” and respond if necessary The amount of work that goes into setting the background, finding topics and then editing to make the product we see is more than most folks will ever know That they come back and like and respond as much as possible is incredibly heartwarming ❤ Thank you for making us part of the process, and making us feel heard
Just touching on toxicity in beauty and how it effects men’s careers versus women’s. 100% agree. I personally have never bought anything from morphe, Jaclyn hill, Jeffree Star, James Charles or anyone else that starts drama and toxic things in this space. I choose to spend my money on something like Rare beauty- where the owner isn’t a giant POS. Sorry, not even kinda sorry.
