In this video I will be walking you through how I made my 3D Printer enclosure that has every feature I could think of outside of having a heated chamber. This video is a little longer because I didn’t want to leave anything out from the build or explaining my though process on why I wanted the features I put into this build. Once plans are available for this video I will link them in the Pinned Message.

I got a Prusa Mk3s a year and a half ago. Once I forced myself to learn Fusion 360, the 3D printer has really started to shine. Half of my jigs/fixtures in the shop are 3D printed. All my friends and family still think it’s the coolest thing and I tend to print a lot of stuff for them too. Great video!

Same. The MK3s just takes it to a whole other level. I'm literally having to level once, and that's it. That baby is ready to go and has produced some really cool, smooth prints. Also, tech support..its just amazing. 24/7 chat has got me out of some jams.

I love this kind of video, where the maker is "imagineering" their way through a project. I'm building an enclosure for two 3D printers right now. I'm a little far down the road to use all of your concepts, but still helpful to see you go through this process. Thanks for sharing and not sugar coating where you might do things differently next time. No first time design is going to be perfect and mistakes or deficiencies are where we learn the most. Cheers!

The cartridge you put on is a 60925 by 3M. That is a p100 only cartridge only good for dust and particulant. The cartridge you are talking about is a 60926 for multi vapors. The problem with that is the carbon in those cartridges are only rated for 8 to 10 hours before they are saturated. That's at a typical person breathing through them and not a fan. You should build a canister style filtration system so you can pump the air back in the enclosure. I used to give training on proper respiratory usage including types of cartridges, ratings and intended uses.
@michbushi
@michbushi Год назад
Thanks for that, I wasn't sure myself if the cartridge size shown is up to the task, but had nothing but a gut feeling to go by. Could you recommend some parts/plans etc. that would be adequate, and how to estimate service intervals, etc?
@cybertaniwha
@cybertaniwha 4 месяца назад
Also remember those cartridges are only rated for 8 to 10 hours due to moisture from the wearers breath, rendering them useless after a few hours. This is basically a moisture less environment setup / usage. So those cartridges should last longer than the stated time. A multi canister style filtration system would be the most efficient if your trying to eliminate odor and harmful gases.

Man, I'm watching this video almost 2 years later and I'm blown away by how cool this looks! I really respect the effort that you put into this. I need to make an enclosure for my Ender 3 S1 Pro and will probably use some of the ideas you put into yours. The mounting spot for the RPi is probably my favorite part. Great video, and as someone who struggles to stay organized the cleanliness of your shop is so satisfying, lol.

Excellent build. Very well thought out design. Do yourself a favor and buy a premium blade for your tablesaw. Keep the diablo for 2x4s and such. You'll get a clean glue up line from the first cut. If you get burns on the wood your feeding it too slowly, this comes from a less quality blade that warps when pushed hard. I've printed a few things useful for the shop. Best one was a bullet collator for by reloader. Saved me enough to pay for the printer inc. mods. Ender 3 V2

Your cabinet is amazing. I was contemplating building something similar but way less sophisticated. And I still found it to be too much work :-) I'm not printing ABS so I don't need the temperature stability but I was concerned about the humidity a lot but I've calmed down and it turned out to be a non-issue for me. Apart from home fixing stuff I mainly print router templates for motises, grip hole etc. Congratulations on your design and execution.
@RingsWorkshop
@RingsWorkshop 2 года назад
Thank you so much! Ya I have the front panel off most the time, I mainly use PLA as I just haven’t needed the strength of Nylon or ABS for most the stuff I’m doing. I thought I’d use them a lot more but with ease of use of PLA and being fine for what I’ve made so far, I just can’t justify the extra hassle for ABS or Nylon yet. But I’m sure someday I’ll push it further and will want to have that ability.

another thing to think about, is if you want this to be a heated chamber then having the enclosure envelope the entire printer means the electronics are being heated, greatly reducing their life. Ideally the motors, the motherboard, the psu would all be separate from the heated area. a good heated enclosure would be just around the print volume. Which isnt easy to achieve with the motors being so close to the build plate, but theres usually enough space to build something out of say polycarbonate and insulate with some thin insulation with reflective material.

That´s awesome, I build something similar. But since I had almost no tools beside a power drill I used 3 IKEA Lack tables which I stacked and placed PC panels in between, used LED lighting up top and made small cabinet in the bottom. I also added wheels to easily move the whole thing. With the new printers they shake too much so I added a pavement plate, basically a slab of concrete inside on a rubber mat which solved the issue. Cost me like 50 bucks and looks pretty great.
@RingsWorkshop
@RingsWorkshop 8 месяцев назад
Thanks! I had contemplated the Lack tables as well.
@sierraecho884
@sierraecho884 8 месяцев назад
@@RingsWorkshop Your solution is better. Not only quality wise but you also most likely have more space inside and you designed your dimensions exactly as needed. Today with my capabilities I would also build one from scratch instead. MDF is not a bad choice btw, he fire hazard is lower than you might think. For one you can impregnate the wood with a fire retardant or with fire retardant paint, cost 10 bucks for a 400ml rattle can. But even if left alone, wood does not burs as well as people might think. Once charred the black surface gives you good resistance. That´s also why so many buildings are made out of wood and still fulfill the code. You can add a fire alarm inside they don´t cost much and give you extra safety. You can also add an automatic extinguisher inside, or both.

Nice setup, while I do not favor fully enclosed systems, as this has more cons than pros, I do like your thought process in your cabinet approach. The best way to deal with print fumes is to exhaust outside. I don't have that issue because my machines are in a dedicated room that has a huge wall exhaust fan, and it sucks not only hot air, but dust, and sometimes too much AC when I have the AC running. The best way to print ABS is to concentrate the hot air just around the print area. Keeping a fully enclosed machine, even with the power supply outside, you are still making the steppers and anythig else that is inside it hotter than they need to be.
@RingsWorkshop
@RingsWorkshop Год назад
Appreciate it! I know it’s not the ideal setup in a perfect world, but for it needing to be in a living space and not being able to exhaust outside it was the best solve I could find. Good advice on ABS, the nice thing with the side panels is I can leave them open a crack at the top so the bottom stays warmer by the bed but hot air can still escape if needed at the top.

Brilliant! You really thought of everything. This is one of my next few projects to tackle so I'm happy that I have this to reference. I'm curious to know how do you handle spools that have a small amount of filament left on them? Do you just print with it until it runs out and then swap in a new spool? I've been trying to scour the internet for a good solution. I know there are devices you can add on just before the feed into the printer that are advertised as being able to print with multiple filament colors. You could theoretically print using a bunch of spools that are running low. Those devices seem to be on the pricey side though. I've seen people weld filament together and rewind into a bigger spool too. Anyway, thanks for sharing!
@RingsWorkshop
@RingsWorkshop 2 года назад
Thank you! I tend to just use it for something small and use as much of it as I can. I didn’t want to mess with trying to weld them together as I’ve heard mixed results and like you said, pricey. I normally use it to calibrate something. Temp test, stringing, overhangs, layer adhesion, esteps, calibration cube, etc.

With your Raspberry Pi inside the same chamber as your printer, do you ever find that your pi gets too hot and the CPU throttling kicks in? Or, is the air circulating enough inside for that to not be a problem? Awesome build and is giving me a few ideas about doing my own!
@RingsWorkshop
@RingsWorkshop 2 года назад
Thank you! No I haven’t had any issues with it, I thought about moving it but since I wasn’t actively heating it, I wasn’t as concerned. That said, I haven’t done more than a 10 hour print with all the panels on yet, as most my longer ones are PLA and I leave on of the panels off so it doesn’t get too hot.

Just found you and cool video this is something I would love to make but I think I'm looking to make something that will be able to server a couple printers. I have a Qidi Tech X-Max that I have done a lot of 3d printed mods too and as well installed the all metal hot end from Qidi Tech to make life easier printing high temp things like nylon and carbon fiber stuff. I also have an Ender 5 Pro that has all the 3d printed mods as well and just a simple conversion from bowden tube to direct drive with all the stock parts. I've also put my spare build plate that came with my Qidi Tech on my Ender 5 and that was a game changer due to the stock Ender build plate being poo. I would really like to make something that resembles just the top portion of your chamber that holds the spools and have it hanging by some chain or maybe some plastic coated cable with a pully system to raise and lower it for obvious reasons. Nice job and thank you for the ideas

@RingsWorkshop
@RingsWorkshop 8 месяцев назад
There are ways to salvage but I’ve never tried it myself. I know some people use food dehydrators or have a special box that will suck moisture out, think sun Lu makes one. Again, not sure how well it works but worth a shot if you have a good amount of filament. Not sure if there is a point where they are too far gone or not.

man this is truly insane in all of the best ways, thank you for this. currently working on replicating your filament system in my enclosure. im having some trouble though and could really use your help! Sorry if ive missed something but ive replayed the video many ttimes and still cant find a resolution. where are the main and short bolt encorporated? as well as filament holder cap, bearing mounta, and bearing cover? the names feel self explanatory but im not the brightest when it comes to building things and cant find where you encorporate them witthin the video. All i see is the filament cleaner assembly and the assembly of the bearing and threaded elevation setup. so theres overall 32 pneumaatic fittings needed? Ive printed most of the items for this build but am stumped on this part, any info will be of help, thank you!
@RingsWorkshop
@RingsWorkshop 9 месяцев назад
Some of the hidden parts were used with the initial setup that I scrapped and went on to the one that used normal bearings. May be from that. I don’t have the fusion 360 file handy, I don’t see it on my thingiverse, can you email me a picture of the parts you are referring to? It should be 32 fittings, correct.

3d printing newb here.... How come people don't put some dessicant in the main chamber of their printer enclosure? Wouldn't that help keep the filament better, especially if you don't use the printer every day?
@RingsWorkshop
@RingsWorkshop 2 года назад
If it was closed off, yes. But the main chamber is open most of the time so it would be circulating air way too much to do anything.

@peterchang7646 2 года назад
@@RingsWorkshop Thx for the reply.... why is the main chamber open all the time?
@RingsWorkshop
@RingsWorkshop 2 года назад
@@peterchang7646 I mainly print with PLA, which you don’t want to get too hot because it can warp, or droop. So I leave a panel off most of the time when I’m printing with that. It also is open when I’m working on things on it (changing nozzle, cleaning the bed, tightening belts, etc.) so air would be in and out way too much. You could lower the floor I suppose of the top chamber so less is exposed underneath though.
