Fear factory is one of my favorite bands of all time. I saw them live play the demanufafcture album live in a small club, it was so badass.

Listening to Pantera is like getting puched in the face. Listening to Fear Factory is like getting sliced to pieces by lasers.

Helmet is one the most underrated bands of all time along with handsome

For the record, the Carnivore track "Race War" is an anti conflict song. The lyrics reflect that if you listen to the whole song, its a great song honestly. Peter Steele was a fan of classic Black American musicians and frequented the House of Blues. And not putting Fear Factory on S or A tier is just ignorant, they literally laid the blueprint that every modern band uses today from the riffing to the clean vs harsh vocals. Big L dude.

Prong is goddamn awesome. Deserve way more recognition

Pantera & FNM are still on my playlist. That stuff will always sound fresh to me. Maybe 'cause Phil and Mike are both exceptional singers, can't stand subpar vocals.

Strapping Young Lad’s 90s albums were also great. Recommend to fans of Fear Factory

That Body Hammer riff has been giving me chills since its release. I had no idea how influential Demanufacture was when it was released and I was 12. But damn does that album slap something fierce. Soul of a New Machine had some very serious jams on it, too.

Fear Factory will always hold a special place in my heart. Found them through the Test Drive video games as a kid and fell in love with them.

Crowbar and Acid Bath. Never achieved any type of commercial success but both heavily influential. Crowbar wrote two of their best albums in the height of nu-metal. Odd Fellows and Sonic Excess. They're still kicking ass today.

Tell me you've only listened to one Helmet record without telling me you've only listened to one Helmet record....Dude has a killer voice, especially when he gets into the more drunkard style like the Size Matters album.

I saw Fear Factory at the Whiskey A Go Go before Demanufacture came out. They played all but one song off Soul of a New Machine. Machine Head opened for them (as well as Clutch). Brujeria made an appearance. It was a great concert. Burton pulled me on stage to yell "Suffer Bastard" during Martyr. Then about 8 months later, I saw them again and they played three songs off the yet-unreleased Demanufacture. Usually I don't like when a band plays unreleased stuff live because it's unfamiliar. But I remember how hard Self Biased Resistor hit live having never even heard the song. I recognized it instantly when the album came out 5 months later. A couple months before Demanufacture came out, I met Dino at Bionic Records in Fullterton, CA and he gave me a promo copy of the album and signed it. They're a huge part of my youth and early adulthood.

Helmet was a game changer for heavy music when they came out. 'A Tier' at least.

Those two Carnivore albums are the absolute top tier metal in my VERY small list of that stuff I come back to. Masterpieces, even if a bit cheesy on the first one. Always was a huge Type O fan, basically all of Pete's projects are top tier to me.

Early 90s Alt Metal and Groove Metal are easily some my favorite sub genres in metal, just so damn good! Machine Head has to be at least B tier, sure they have some misses that are bad but Burn My Eyes and The Blackening are S tier metal albums.

It’s insane how good all the 90s metal bands were and how the music still holds up. The majority of either my favorite bands and/or favorite albums are from 90s metal powerhouses. Looking forward to part two.

Seeing Type O Negative and Biohazard back in the days at L'amour ( a club in Brooklyn) and those bands were from Brooklyn, was pretty damned awesome

Faith No More is whatever tier is above S. And it isn't even close.

Fun fact: Terry Date produced albums for about half of the bands on this list, most of which are considered their best albums.

We need a longer version of this. There are a lot of bands and genres who should have been mentioned.

Fear Factory is a truely underrated and is a true A tier band with all their newest material is amazing.

I think it's worth mentioning, and Finn missed the opportunity, to point out that out of all those racist Brooklyn bands, Biohazard was openly ANTI-racist. They deserve a lot of credit for that, especially back in a time where you could be racist (at least subtly) and get away with it. They drew the opposite line in the sand and made it loud and proudly clear. Solid list, great bands, good justifications. Fear Factory has had an incredible run, but they've fallen on hard times lately; they probably deserve A tier though, especially with their influence on industrial metal. They were doing things that quite simply no one else in heavy metal was doing at the time, especially death metal (where they started). Bringing on one half of the masterminds behind Delerium to remix their metal albums into something more electronic? Absolutely crazy. I'd bump them up. I think Machine Head's peak (including Through the Ashes, the Blackening, and Locust with their first album) is A tier worthy, but man, their bad albums are BAD, and that has to be taken into account. UKJ is A tier in my heart as well, and I think they're better song writers than they were given credit for because of their humor and shtick, but they lacked staying power and impact (maybe this is where you needed a D tier lol). Helmet and Prong are legit C tier, and well justified. White Zombie didn't have the lengthy career necessary to justify a higher ranking (unless you include Rob's solo work), and honestly, they had some duds early on. Any critique of RATM ranking S tier would have to be their relatively limited run and discography. Their debut is absolute fire and hugely influential. But more longevity would have been nice. Pantera had some absolute duds to bookend their run, but their core three albums warrant S tier - as well as their influence. Super appreciate the love given Type O. Easily the best song writers on the entire list, up there with the best metal song writers of all time. Unlike most of these bands, they also had a long and hugely productive run, and with a much higher average bar for quality songs across their discography (way better, on average, than Pantera or Machine Head). A tier only because their moody goth metal / Drab Four vibe isn't going to appeal to all metal heads, but in terms of quality alone, I think they're absolutely S tier. They do have some problematic early songs, as Finn mentioned, and it's very convenient to try to excuse it all as a joke - but with Type O (like Rammstein), it's very difficult to tell when they were being serious. I suspect there's a bit of truth to those lyrics, and if they're even a little bit true, then it's too much.

Man you need to get into NIN. The Fragile and The downward spiral are amomg the greatest albums of all time. They would easily be S-Tier.

Soul-Crusher by White Zombie is my current 90’s metal song of choice.

Finally the tier list I can 100% get behind. All of these bands were on constant rotation for me growing up. Fear Factory stans unite! Also its wild that Epic still gets constant rotation on the local FM rock stations. I wore that tape out in grade school...but man, nothing in their discography tops Angel Dust.

What they do off stage doesn't change the bands catalogue

I like all these bands, I can care less about their politics and opinions. People now say way worse but only some are criticized. That being said, Faith No More deserves to be in the S tier! Hands down ;)

Type O Negative is A for sure, (Nirvana wrote rape me and he's not a rapist. STP wrote a song about murder but they aren't murderers) Same with the Prong comment. One wasn't Metallica endorsing war. Music was more of a statement or a story or told from the point of view of the oppressor in the 80s and 90s. We take everything so literal these days with no room for metaphor or nuance. It's so wierd.

Fear Factory have been one of , if not my favourite band since I first heard them in '96. They will always be on my A or S tier. But I can understand that those albums without Dino will always be a spot for some folks. I had most of these bands and songs on crappy n-th gen compilation dubs. I'm now gonna go and re listen to all again now.

I would've thrown Melvins up there for their work on Houdini. Phenomenal album, as nasty as riffs really get for the early 90s for a band not named Pantera or TOOL.

My Misery from The Demon Knight soundtrack and Davidian was S tier Machine Head. Fear Factory is GOAT back in the day. I don't ever see anyone talk about Archetype and it's missing from Spotify. Cyberwaste goes HARD and you have Byron Stroud and I think Jed Simon in the video which is fucking awesome. Prong was awesome and then Al used them to ruin Ministry. White Zombie, Welcome to Planet MF and I Am Hell go so damn hard.

Machine Head deserves A tier in my opinion. The blackening was not that bad for a comeback.

I saw Whitfield Crane from UKJ fronting Life of Agony in 1996, opening for Megadeth and Machine Head in some 1000 person venue in San Diego. I remember being pretty impressed and I was a huge UKJ fan when the EP came out in the 7th grade.

Great list. I still love Faith No More. They were like my generation's Queen, a solid rock band with a virtuoso singer that played around with a lot of other musical styles. Type O Negative were great live and i've come to appreciate a lot of their later music. They always had a kind of trolling sense of humor, too, which I enjoy. Prong and Biohazard also great. Riffs for days. Cannot discount Fear Factory. Demanufacture was/is a classic. Some day you should make a video of just how un-Fk-withable Roadrunner Records' roster was in the 90s. Well done, Finn.
