Have you ever heard of the Aeolian Islands in Sicily? Sometimes referred to as the Lipari Islands or the Lipari group - named after their largest island and town, the Aeolian islands are a volcanic archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea just north of Sicily. They were named after a demigod named Aeolus who legend has it controls the winds.
Since the islands were formed by volcanic activity that is ongoing to this day, they were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000.
The Islands inhabitants are known as Aeolians and the current population is about 15,000 permanent residents. The Aeolian islands are a very popular tourist destination in the summertime and they attract up to 600,000 visitors a year.
