In this video bass player, Morten Jay is presenting the BP1 and the BAS1 Bass Preamps from Caveman Audio.
What would you use in the studio to get the best possible bass sound?
First: A great-sounding preamp. Second: Parallel compression. Third: EQ.
This is exactly what BAS1 gives you! It simply represents the peak of our skills and efforts. And the result is, without doubt, the finest Bass Preamp that we could have ever imagined crafting.
It is designed to run directly to a FOH console or the mixing desk in the studio via a transformer-balanced DI. We even added a transformer-balanced AMP OUT to feed your amplifier/monitor on the stage.
BAS1 is a tone monster that will make every note you play stand out clearly and with the character and definition of a genuine tube amplifier.
BP1 crams the preamp and output stage from our BAS1 Bass Preamp System into a compact stompbox format with zero sonic compromises.
This is a no-brainer pedal with nothing but Gain and Level controls. Simply plug your bass into BP1, trim the Gain and Level to fit your taste, and experience the mind-blowing tone this unit has to offer.
We added a switchable audio loop in case you use additional stompboxes or other external equipment to make sure the sound of BP1 is never compromised.
The Radio/Wireless input and all outputs use custom-made audio transformers. In general, only the finest components are selected for use in this stellar preamp design.

While it is important to deliver a solid, articulate and usable tone to the FOH engineer, it is at least as, if not more important to let them do their job and not EVER try to second guess their choices in how they handle your sound within the mix. Likewise for recording. Those preamps sound great, and I may get one myself soon, but as someone who has worked as both a professional bassist and FOH/recording engineer at different times, I think the message of taking control (away from the engineer) is not helpful or productive. What you think you hear coming out of the PA as you stand onstage in an empty room should not inform your personal tonal choices. It is far wiser to dial up a sound onstage/in your monitors that you can be happy with and inspires you to play your best at the lowest possible volume with killing your mojo. Trust me, the lower the stage volume you can effectively play at, the better.

Ive played so many shows with “sound engineers” that don’t know what they are doing(its always a gamble) and have had more negative results than positive. This saves me the headache and can focus on my performance. Maybe youre a good engineer but not everyone is on top of their game/craft.

I typically Let the FOH control the lows and the highs. I will do as I wish with the main structure of my tone. Most of the sounds guys I have worked with do not truly understand what to do with a solid raw tone; to the point of blaming my (completely turned off) stage amp for poor room sound. If they can't figure out how to make cab sims sound good, then they should never have stepped behind the board. Fortunately, lower end sound gear is improving and even the worst sound engineers seem to be able to handle it.

What exactly does the Caveman do? "Makes your tone better" doesn't cut it, I need to know more.

At almost $3,000 the rack unit should come in with a free smart car.
