this was very helpful, I jumped in as a long time player of LoL and Overwatch/tf2 thinking i'd have it all covered, could just be because it's beta/alpha still but the tutorial only telling you about controls really means i had no idea about half of this after a few days of playing. didn't realize meleeing minions got all the souls, didn't realize jungle camps were uncontained souls for a while, had absolutely no idea what the urn was or what to do with it. didn't know teleporters or secret shops existed. Lots of very useful tips so thank you :D
@@ninjabagel01 Valve is big on emergent gameplay. Unlike OW guys, they recognize the core game loop and it shows in their mechanics. The options available aren't hard rules. Icefrog does something interesting here with the zip lines and mini-map+vision which I am trying to learn more about but youtube and reddit creators havent posted about it so I have to figure it out myself. Im not sure if valve has talked about it yet. Anyways, they made it oppressive to cross between red lines without teammates. This pushes players away from invading for teamfights and keeps player a) In lane and pushing/fighting or b) jungling. This is where the souls are at and these are the points of contest. Note that Urn and Mid-boss are on the axis of perfect lane equilibrium and is accessible from lanes and most jungle sites. I'm trying to put more tunneling into my creep routes as it lowers your exposure to enemies on the map if you're not trying to take trades. I could talk about how Overwatch has never fixed the gaping holes in their gameplay loop but that would take too long. It's a big reason why I quit the game as they're so far down the crapper and they still won't fix tiny things and make them transparent like overtimes, Objective behavior, etc. They have a real confidence problem which I assume is from having to output game content prematurely over and over with no intention of fixing later.
@@Thatguypowers exactly, in late game it's extremely unlikely that the guardian in whatever lane you're in is still alive and it's usually faster to back to base than it is to go to the neutral shop
I think they have taken the best aspects of MOBAs leaving out the components that add a lot of complexity and may not be that fun for most players. No warding No hero drafts No separate roles and lanes for offlane, safelane, support, jungler, etc.
Also the objectives! There are only 2 side objectives in the game: midboss and urn. And both of them are simple kill this thing or bring this thing across the map. There are no bounty rune, xp rune, shrine for tp, tormentor, jungle items, etc. There's power rune, but you only casually pick it up while traversing between lanes instead of actively securing it for mid like in dota.
Thats what i have been saying! The design of this game is amazing. You just jump right into a game no wait time and you also get to lane with your friend 100% of the time if you duo queue. they are doing everything to make me love this game.
only thing I will say about the roles.... mobas like LoL started without that being such a rigid thing, but as metas were defined and people cared more and more about optimal gameplay it became more regimented due to what the playerbase wanted. I feel like if the game is taken competitively (def will) then roles/lanes and metas will organically come through which devs may play into
My first 7 games, I’m getting absolutely annihilated by a shockingly well coordinated team after laning phase. There’s NO way I should be in that game! These guys are insane. Where’s my noob lobbies cuz I haven’t seen any at all.
@@bilbobaggins7075 this is factually not true. When you party with someone with a high MMR the game gives you a warning that your game is going to likely be at a higher difficulty as it will scale you upwards to vs stronger opponents
To be honest as a dedicated jungle player in most moba's I think it would actually be really cool if there was a jungle and support role and then 4 carries basically. Have the support play the two mid lanes on the map and then the jungler try to cover all four/primarily the side lanes. Or two Junglers? Idk. Needless to say I'm really interested to see how the game continues to develop!!
@@DoubleMallow Valve is censoring what the game will look like in the future. They took the guesswork about which lane you're going down while players figure out what works and when. E.g. the best players are going to figure out what actually works without the automatic lane selection and then the devs can iterate on it with as much info as possible. The standard way to play in the future will involve a draft with a planning page where players mark their lane choices. They need more heroes and more information to make these sorts of changes. I think there will be core and support roles eventually but this stretch of the playtest is about allocating server space to meet demand and to apply the FUN test. Is it fun on the surface? Is it deeply fun? What kind of players are having the most fun?
Doubt it. Its pretty bad as a spectator game. I mean .. its valve and its fun. Itll have a playerbase, but it won't topple current titans. Plus, all the characters look lame
@@SpicySharp watch ability is incredibly important for a esport. I love when people give no arguments, you give arguments and then they go: dumb take with no arguments. The game will be popular because its addictive and fun, but I can't see it topple the likes of cs:go or overwatch. Its just way too chaotic. Plus its mad complicated to get started. I am an avid gamer in every competitive genre, andi have never been this overwhelmed.
@@SpicySharp what do you mean insecure? I have no stake in any of this. That is a very strange conclusion to make from all this. Still no arguments tho, only ad hominem, which means i said enough. Besides, you are typing along with me.
Just wanted to say Stylosa, I loved your OW content, it was amazing and I was an avid watcher for the first 2 seasons (of competitive) - this game gives me those same feels and I just feel grateful that you're making Deadlock content! Hello and Welcome to MEEEE
Every week, the concurrent player count just keeps going up. Valve did good on this one. Best tip I would give new players, take your time, play it and enjoy it. The game takes many hours to get to grips with it, there is too much info to know as a new player, so don't sweat it. It will come with time, experience, hours played etc. I've clocked about 24 hours, been playing for a week, and only now am I starting to get decent at the game (and that is just with one characters, Wraith). It takes time, so no giving up. Stick with it.
This is likely overwhelming for anyone who hasnt played a moba - they think its primarily a 3rd person shooter. All of the CoD bros will fall off quickly, then the game meta and community will progress from there.
@@cshepard09 There is very little actual "MOBA" in this game imo. It has a MOBA map, but that's pretty much it. The actual gameplay is a LOT more hero shooter than MOBA. Realistically that will probably change, because if they don't add a bit more complexity the game will lose a good portion of it's player base. The shooter players will go play more direct shooters, and the MOBA players will go play more complex MOBA's. I really like the game, but it needs more complexity to be the kind of game it's trying to be imo.
I think the only thing you could add would be what a flex slot is. I'm guessing it's those last four items slots that let you pick from whatever item tree.
Overwatch streamers need to absolutely jump off that sinking shit and “make the switch” to deadlock. This game gives me the same feeling as 2016 overwatch. That’s how you know it’s a safe game to main. The depth and learning adds a whole new level of enjoyment
Dude I am Loving this game. Make this your fulltime content game. This game is gonna make me quit overwatch. I'm just liike you where i played a ton of leauge back in the day but fell out of it. This game is bringing me back to mobas.
Select a hero, nobody got the experience to shout at you for picking a hero. That didn't stop people in early Overwatch from screaming at you for picking Torb or Hanzo xD
They already do. Most games end up with one team getting absolutely stomped into the ground by people who play like gods and then they don't finish the game because they'd rather farm the enemy players.
@@RavenGlenn that isnt the case in my experience at all, at any level of gameplay. I've played 50 hours, my friends with higher numbers haven't seen that at all
If I can get in now before there's more items and more to learn and learn it now and than go form there I will play but the more that gets added the harder it gets
Hey Stylosa do you also think you could do videos on Marvel Rivals when it comes out in December, feel like you could easily become the news guy for hero shooters
I want to play this game so bad but I don’t know anyone who has access so I can’t get invited 😢 and I’m not patient enough to wait for it to release womp womp to me
I guess this game is 1 you have to play because the gameplay just doesn’t do it for me. Smite is a super fun moba, I understand the hype behind DOTA and LOL but this just looks eh. Maybe I’m missing something. Also if it doesn’t come to console gives I’ll never know lol
Speaking as someone who has 3000 hours in dota which I know isn’t a ton compared to a lot of people I have tried to get so many people into the game and it just overwhelms them, but I have actually tried to get some of the same people into deadlock and they totally understand more or less what is going on after the first game or two
@@glarjk9472I am one of those people who have tried LoL, Dota, and Smite and just couldn’t get through the learning curve. I have friends who are like you with thousands of hours in various MOBAS. We all got into Deadlock, played 3 or 4 bot matches to figure out the basics and hopped into regular matches and this game clicks with every single one of us. From MOBA tryhards to a couple guys who haven’t even sniffed a moba. It really is a learn as you play game which will help anybody coming in. It also helps that the number of playable characters is super limited compared to the others I listed. No need to worry about who to unlock and who is good. Like Stylosa said, pick whoever looks like you’d vibe with and just play. Even the bot matches(in my opinion) are great for learning the fundamentals before playing against other humans and the easy difficulty still felt like a challenge the first game or two.
Don't listen to these guys telling you this game is easy to understand. It's NOT. This reminds me of being back in school during math class. Sooo confusing. all those numbers...2+2=5, 3x1=6, it took me years to even understand the easy numbers like that. 45 years later and I can almost count to 20... I don't have 37 years to learn a dang video game. Save your self and your precious brain cells. Play a nice chill game like hide n seek.
If you have a job and want to casually play. Don't pick this game. If you dont know exactly how to play and what buffs to use, you get rolled by no lifers
Ngl chief I agree with that point on other games but deadlocks like really simple when you boil it down. If you can read item effects, use public build and build suggested abilities it's fun.
@@acev3521 my friend code is 1099445652 if you would be willing to invite me. i've really been wanting to play and i've asked to be invited, but i never got any confirmation that people have actually invited me.
I can't understand half the terminology you're using cuz it's league-speak. I hope this isn't a trend cuz i saw the same thing happening in marvel rivals where everything in the damn game is called something from overwatch lol Eitherway, im looking forward to deadlock. Itll be my first moba-like game.
Maybe just educate yourself before commenting like that lol ? It's incredibly easy to get into, there's literally open discord groups and reddit posts for inviting people.
This game will die if they don't change it drastically. It has major flaws. Valve is only testing the game, to see how it goes and trust me, they don't care what people say, they are analyzing based on player's data themselves. The elephant in the room is the readability of abilities and generally state of the battles and all heroes in 6v6 fights, putting that into a third-person perspective camera with lots of UI, good luck trying to make it work. If they did however, that would not be this thing I'm seeing right now. They need an overhaul and major innovation to fix that issue.
