My design is very specific to my tow bar. Plus I am a 2nd rate welder operating out of a single car garage. I couldn’t make one quick enough or provide a good enough quality for it to be profitable. The securing idea though may be worth looking into as an add on to other racks, though not everyone is comfortable with such effortless security. Many want turnbuckles and a multitude of straps just to have peace of mind.

Thanks for sharing. It may look great, but it sure looks heavy as well. One must be in good shape to handle it's on/off install. I have a steel HD version Moto Jack Rack (I think they are out of business by now) and even that is pretty heavy.
@ian9toes
@ian9toes 3 года назад
The main piece is 35 Kg’s which is not too bad, but not real light either. If I was to redesign it rather than try and make it lighter/weaker, I’d be more inclined to make it in two pieces somehow for the main section. So three pieces all up including the hitch receiver part. I’d make it tool-less with the over-centre latch locking it all together.
@mrtopcat2
@mrtopcat2 3 года назад
@@ian9toes Thanks for your response. Initially, when I wrote my comment, I did not realize that you have built this yourself. So with that in mind, of course I highly admire your skills and how successful this project has turned out. I especially like that you can swing the carrier out of the way and open the door. I have found myself often in a situation where this would have come in handy, but was not available on the design of my carrier. But yes, being able to break it down in more easy to handle pieces would be a plus. Another thing that I like about the idea of a carrier, that can be broken down in pieces, is that it could easily fit in the "trunk" of even a smaller vehicle. That the user would not have to worry about it to be stolen while riding.

This is awesome. Just slid into my feed from nowhere! Former maintenance fitter/welder, automotive manufacturing engineer and biker. Some nylon chopping boards cut up into strips for the interfacing steel on steel slide for the center hitch are probably overkill but a thought I had. Also to weld in a triangular plate on the underside of the 90 degree bend of that centre hitch, just a thought. And a tow hitch jack wheel popped into my head but again, overkill unless you're putting a bigger bike on there, though that tow bar would only be rated to around 150-200kgs?
@ian9toes
@ian9toes 3 года назад
The reason I didn’t bother with a triangle reinforcement piece is because the other joint straight out of the hitch receiver can’t be done the same way, so it seemed pointless to strengthen one joint and not the other. I did do mitre joints with 4 passes though, and crossed my fingers 😁

Hello Ian, best Design ever (also for my purpose, I need to get free access to my rear doors quickly with a 120kg bike loaded). I am ready ans skilled to build my own carrier, need to make minor changes (I don´t have such US-style 2" hitch, but a european style ball head coupling). But I failed to find something like your hinge, what you call a "spare wheel carrier/w. 2 bearings/dustcap" to be found on ebay. Can you provide a link for that item? That would be fine to realize my project! Thanks and enjoy your ingenious construction!

Also be sure to check out my latest videos as I’ve made some pretty decent changes to the original design for much more convenient securing of the bike. I can literally load or unload my bike in about 20 seconds. www.ebay.com.au/itm/180942399078?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=705-154756-20017-0&ssspo=ErwZ6uA7SwK&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=tTd96_wNSs-&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

@@ian9toes, thank you very much for your informations. As these hinges seem to be from australian origin, it´s not easy to get them shipped to Europe. But now I understand how it works and I can replace the aussi style spare wheel hinge by a very common king pin like every Volkswagen of the 80´s and 90´s has at both ends of the rear axle. These king pins also do have 2 bearings, dustcap etc. and are definitely strong enough to carry the weight of my bike while beeing "swing away". And they are so cheap....thanks a lot!

Although my design is perfect for me being able to leave the bike on the side and remove the hitch section for a clean back area for camping. However my design is specific to my van with that particular tow bar. But take a look at this clamping device I invented recently, it could be utilised on other racks and is a huge step forward. One holding point only quick and simple, can be used to lock it and doesn’t load suspension or mousse tubes.
